| 1 | Confounding risk factors and preventative measures driving nephrolithiasis global makeup显示文摘Nephrolithiasis is increasing in developed and developing countries at an alarming rate. With the global spike in kidney stone diseases, it is crucial to determine what risk factors are influencing the current global landscape for kidney stones. Our aims for this review are: to identity and analyze the four categories of risk factors in contributing to the global scale of stone formation: lifestyle, genetics, diet, and environment; and discuss preventative measures for kidney stone formation. We also performed data search through the published scientific literature, i.e., PubMed~? and found that there is a significant link between lifestyle and obesity with cases of calcium stones. Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and World Health Organization factor indicators for dietary intake and obesity, along with climate data were used to create the projected total risk world map model for nephrolithiasis risk. | 2 | Effects of Toxic Levels of Aluminium on Seedling Parameters of Rice under Hydroponic Culture显示文摘The presence of Al in the rhizosphere of rice in acid soil restricts root growth and significantly reduces crop productivity.In this study,the effects of Al(30,60 and 90μg/mL)on seedling root growth,number of primary roots per seedling,seedling shoot length,number of leaves per seedling,seedling fresh weight,and seedling dry weight were studied.Rice genotypes were classified into three different classes,namely,tolerant,moderately tolerant,and susceptible,based on root tolerance index.The method of hydroponic culture was modified,and elaborated in the text.Toxic levels of Al in nutrient solution significantly decreased seedling root growth,number of primary roots,seedling shoot length,number of leaves per seedling,seedling fresh weight,and seedling dry weight.Few genotypes showed longer root length at 30μg/mL Al in nutrient solutions compared with the control.High levels of Al in nutrient solutions were highly toxic for rice seedlings.Based on root tolerance index,Radhunipagal,Gobindobhog,Badshabhog,Kalobhog,UBKVR-11,UBKVR-16,UBKVR-18,Khasha and IVT4007-B were classified as tolerant genotypes,and these genotypes may be used as donors for breeding of Altoxicity tolerance. | Bidhan ROY Sanjib BHADRA | 2014 | Rice science2014,21,4: | 3 |

| 7 | Hypercalciuria switches Ca^(2+) signaling in proximal tubular cells,induces oxidative damage to promote calcium nephrolithiasis显示文摘Proximal tubule(PT)transports most of the renal Ca^(2+),which was usually described as paracellular(passive).We found a regulated Ca^(2+)entry pathway in PT cells via the apical transient receptor potential canonical 3(TRPC3)channel,which initiates transcellular Ca^(2+)transport.Although TRPC3 knockout(−/−)mice were mildly hypercalciuric and displayed luminal calcium phosphate(CaP)crystals at Loop of Henle(LOH),no CaP+calcium oxalate(CaOx)mixed urine crystals were spotted,which are mostly found in calcium nephrolithiasis(CaNL).Thus,we used oral calcium gluconate(CaG;2%)to raise the PT luminal[Ca^(2+)]o further in TRPC3−/−mice for developing such mixed stones to understand the mechanistic role of PT-Ca^(2+)signaling in CaNL.Expectedly,CaG-treated mice urine samples presented with numerous mixed crystals with remains of PT cells,which were pronounced in TRPC3−/−mice,indicating PT cell damage.Notably,PT cells from CaG-treated groups switched their mode of Ca^(2+)entry from receptor-operated to store-operated pathway with a sustained rise in intracellular[Ca^(2+)]([Ca^(2+)]i),indicating the stagnation in PT Ca^(2+)transport.Moreover,those PT cells from CaG-treated groups demonstrated an upregulation of calcification,inflammation,fibrotic,oxidative stress,and apoptotic genes;effects of which were more robust in TRPC3 ablated condition.Furthermore,kidneys from CaG-treated groups exhibited fibrosis,tubular injury and calcifications with significant reactive oxygen species generation in the urine,thus,indicating in vivo CaNL.Taken together,excess PT luminal Ca^(2+)due to escalation of hypercalciuria in TRPC3 ablated mice induced surplus CaP crystal formation and caused stagnation of PT[Ca^(2+)]i,invoking PT cell injury,hence mixed stone formation. | Samuel Shin Cliff-Lawrence Ibeh Eugenia Awuah Boadi Bok-Eum Choi Sanjit K.Roy Bidhan C.Bandyopadhyay | 2022 | Genes & Diseases2022,9,2: | 2 |

| 19 | Glassy carbon microneedles-new transdermal drug delivery device derived from a scalable C-MEMS process显示文摘Because carbon is the basic element of all life forms and has been successfully applied as a material for medical applications,it is desirable to investigate carbon for drug delivery applications,as well.In this work,we report the fabrication of a hollow carbon microneedle array with flow channels using a conventional carbonmicroelectromechanical system(C-MEMS)process.This process utilizes the scalable and irreversible step of pyrolysis,where prepatterned SU-8 microneedles(precursor)are converted to glassy carbon structures in an inert atmosphere at high temperature(900°C)while retaining their original shape upon shrinkage.Once converted to glassy carbon,the microneedles inherit the unique properties of hardness,biocompatibility,and thermal and chemical resistance associated with this material.A comparative study of hardness and Young’s modulus for carbon microneedles and SU-8 microneedles was performed to evaluate the increased strength of the microneedles induced by the C-MEMS process steps.Structural shrinkage of the carbon microneedles upon pyrolysis was observed and estimated.Material characterizations including energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDX)and Raman spectroscopy were carried out to estimate the atomic percentage of carbon in the microneedle structure and its crystalline nature,respectively.Our investigations confirm that the microneedles are glassy in nature.Compression and bending tests were also performed to determine the maximum forces that the carbon microneedles can withstand,and it was found that these forces were approximately two orders of magnitude higher than the resistive forces presented by skin.A microneedle array was inserted into mouse skin multiple times and was successfully removed without the breakage of any microneedles. | Richa Mishra Bidhan Pramanick Tapas Kumar Maiti Tarun Kanti Bhattacharyya | 2018 | Microsystems & Nanoengineering2018,4,1: | 1 |
