1Evaluation of a point of care ultrasound curriculum for Indonesian physicians taught by fi rst-year medical students显示文摘BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to assess the short-term efficacy of a 4-week ultrasound curriculum taught by American first-year medical students to general practitioners working in public health care clinics, or puskesmas, in Bandung, Indonesia.METHODS: We performed a prospective, observational study of Indonesian health care practitioners from public clinics in Bandung, Indonesia. These practitioners were enrolled in a 4-week ultrasound training course taught by first-year American medical students. A total of six sessions were held comprising of 38 ultrasound milestones. A pre-course and post-course written exam and practical exam was taken by each participant.RESULTS: We enrolled 41 clinicians in the course. The average pre-course exam score was 35.2% with a 2.4% pass rate, whereas the average post-course exam score was 82.0% with a 92.7% pass rate. The average practical score at the completion of the course was 83.2%(SD=0.145) with 82.9% of the class passing(score above 75.0%).CONCLUSION: Our data suggests that first-year medical students can effectively teach ultrasound to physicians in Indonesia using a 4-week intensive ultrasound training course. 2Comparison of ultrasound-measured properties of the common carotid artery to tobacco smoke exposure in a cohort of Indonesian patients显示文摘BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to use point-of-care ultrasound(POCUS) to investigate the relationship between tobacco smoke exposure and the characteristics of the common carotid artery(CCA). The effect of both primary and secondary smoking on CCA properties was evaluated.METHODS: We performed a prospective cross-sectional study across 20 primary care clinics in Bandung, West Java, Indonesia in July 2016. Point of care ultrasound was performed on a convenience sample of Indonesian patients presenting to clinic. The CCA wall stiffness and carotid intima-media thickness(CIMT) were measured during diastole and systole. These measurements were correlated with smoke exposure and cardiovascular disease.RESULTS: We enrolled 663 patients in the study, with 426 patients enrolled in the smoking category and 237 patients enrolled in the second-hand smoke category. There was an overall positive correlation with the measured lifestyle factors and the ultrasound-measured variables in the group of individuals who smoked. For all variables, age seemed to contribute the most out of all of the lifestyle factors for the positive changes in CIMT and CCA wall stiffness.CONCLUSION: Our data yielded correlations between CCA properties and cardiovascular risk, as well as between CIMT and arterial stiffness. We were also able to demonstrate an increase in thickness of the CIMT in patients who have been exposed by tobacco through the use of ultrasound. 11The virtual peripheral nerve academy:education for the identification and treatment of peripheral nerve disorders显示文摘Millions of people around the globe suffer peripheral nerve injuries caused by trauma and medical disorders.However,medical school curricula are profoundly deficient in peripheral nerve education.This lack of knowledge within the healthcare profession may cause inadequate patient care.We developed the Virtual Peripheral Nerve Academy(VPNA)as a reusable virtual learning environment to provide medical students with detailed education on the peripheral nervous system(PNS).Students are introduced to the PNS through virtual 3D rendering of the human body,wherein they visualize individual nerves through dissection and observe normal motor and sensory function associated with each nerve.PNS structures that are absent from traditional texts are included in this visualization,ranging from the innervation of joints to the normal anatomic variation required for differential diagnosis of pain after an injury.Detailed modules on peripheral nerve disorders allow students to observe pathophysiological mechanisms,associated symptomatology,and appropriate treatments.Students are briefed on a patient clinical case,then interact with a patient avatar to learn the appropriate diagnostics,including physical exam maneuvers and electrodiagnostic testing.Interactive modules on peripheral nerve surgeries detail surgical techniques.The VPNA data and analytics dashboards allow medical students and course instructors to assess skill improvement and identify specific learning needs.The built-in learner management system and availability on both computer-based and virtual reality platforms facilitate integration into any existing medical school curricula.Ultimately,this immersive technology enables every medical student to learn about the peripheral nervous system and gain competency in treating real-life nerve pathologies.Erica B.Lee Allison Podsednik Kimberly Khoo Amal Cheema Raysa Cabrejo Chen Shen Joseph Rosen A.Lee Dellon 2022Plastic and Aesthetic Research2022,9,1:0

13Status of the Fermilab muon (g-2) experiment显示文摘The New Muon(g-2) Collaboration at Fermilab has proposed to measure the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon,aμ,a factor of four better than was done in E821 at the Brookhaven AGS,which obtained aμ =[116592089(63)]×10-11±0.54 ppm.The last digit of aμ is changed from the published value owing to a new value of the ratio of the muon-to-proton magnetic moment that has become available.At present there appears to be a difference between the Standard-Model value and the measured value,at the 3 standard deviation level when electron-positron annihilation data are used to determine the lowest-order hadronic piece of the Standard Model contribution.The improved experiment,along with further advances in the determination of the hadronic contribution,should clarify this difference.Because of its ability to constrain the interpretation of discoveries made at the LHC,the improved measurement will be of significant value,whatever discoveries may come from the LHC.B.Lee Roberts 2010Chinese Physics C2010,34,6:0
