| 4 | Epidemiology of onchocerciasis-associated epilepsy in the Mbam and Sanaga river valleys of Cameroon:impact of more than 13 years of ivermectin显示文摘Background:A high epilepsy prevalence has been reported in several onchocerciasis-endemic villages along the Mbam and Sanaga river valleys in Cameroon,including Bilomo and Kelleng.We sought to determine the prevalence of epilepsy in these two villages following more than 13 years of community-directed treatment with ivermectin(CDTI).Methods:Door-to-door surveys were performed on the entire resident population in the villages in August 2017 and January 2018.Epilepsy was diagnosed using a 2-step approach:administration of a standardized 5-item questionnaire followed by confirmation by a neurologist.Previously published diagnostic criteria for onchocerciasis-associated epilepsy(OAE)were used.Ov16 serology was done for children aged 7-10 years to assess onchocerciasis transmission.Findings were compared with previous data from these two villages.Results:A total of 1525 individuals(1321 in Bilomo and 204 in Kelleng)in 233 households were surveyed in both villages.The crude prevalence of epilepsy was 4.6%in Bilomo(2017)and 7.8%in Kelleng(2018),including 12(15.6%of cases)persons with epilepsy(PWE)with nodding seizures.The age and sex-standardized prevalence in Kelleng decreased from 13.5%in 2004 to 9.3%in 2018(P<0.001).The median age of PWE shifted from 17(IQR:12-22)years to 24(IQR:20-30)years in Bilomo(P<0.001);and slightly from 24(IQR:14-34)years to 28(IQR:21.25-36.75)years in Kelleng(P=0.112).Furthermore,47.6%of all tested children between 7 and 10 years had Ov16 antibodies.Conclusions:There is a decrease in epilepsy prevalence after 13 years and more of CDTI in both villages.The age-shift observed in PWE suggests that ivermectin may prevent OAE in younger residents.Ov16 seropositivity in children indicates ongoing onchocerciasis transmission possibly due to suboptimal control measures.Our findings support the existence of OAE in Cameroon and highlight the need to strengthen onchocerciasis elimination programs. | Joseph Nelson Siewe Fodjo Godwin Tatah Earnest Njih Tabah Leonard Ngarka Leonard Njamnshi Nfor Samuel Eric Chokote Michel KMengnjo Fidele Dema Aurelien Tele Sitouok Grace Nkoro Felicien ENtone Anne-Cecile Zoung-Kanyi Bissek Cedric BChesnais Michel Boussinesq Robert Colebunders Alfred K.Njamnshi | 2018 | Infectious Diseases of Poverty2018,7,1: | 3 |
| 5 | Freezing on demand: A new concept for mine safety and energy savings in wet underground mines显示文摘The artificial ground freezing(AGF)systems are designed to operate continuously for an extended period of time to control the groundwater seepage and to strengthen the groundwater structure surrounding excavation areas.This mode of operation requires a massive amount of energy to sustain the thickness of the frozen body.Therefore,it is of great interest to propose new concepts to reduce energy consumption while providing sufficient structural stability and safe operation.This paper discusses the principle of the freezing on demand(FoD)by means of experiment and mathematical model.A lab-scale rig that mimics the AGF process is conceived and developed.The setup is equipped with more than 80 thermocouples,flow-meters,and advanced instrumentation system to analyze the performance of the AGF process under the FoD concept.A mathematical model has been derived,validated,and utilized to simulate the transient FoD concept.The results suggest that the overall energy saving notably depends on the coolant’s temperature;the energy saving increases while decreasing the coolant inlet temperature.Moreover,applying the FoD concept in an AGF system leads to a significant drop in energy consumption. | Mahmoud A.Alzoubi Ahmad Zueter Aurelien Nie-Rouquette Agus P.Sasmito | 2019 | International Journal of Mining Science and Technology2019,29,4: | 3 |
| 6 | Saturable plasmonic metasurfaces for laser mode locking显示文摘Metamaterials are artificial materials made of subwavelength elementary cells that give rise to unexpected wave properties that do not exist naturally.However,these properties are generally achieved due to 3D patterning,which is hardly feasible at short wavelengths in the visible and near-infrared regions targeted by most photonic applications.To overcome this limitation,metasurfaces,which are the 2D counterparts of metamaterials,have emerged as promising platforms that are compatible with planar nanotechnologies and thus mass production,which platforms the properties of a metamaterial into a 2D sheet.In the linear regime,wavefront manipulation for lensing,holography,and polarization control has been achieved recently.Interest in metasurfaces operating in the nonlinear regime has also increased due to the ability of metasurfaces to efficiently convert incident light into harmonic frequencies with unusual polarization properties.However,to date,the nonlinear absorption of metasurfaces has been mostly ignored.Here,we demonstrate that plasmonic metasurfaces behave as saturable absorbers with modulation performances superior to the modulation performance of other 2D materials and exhibit unusual polarimetric nonlinear transfer functions.We quantify the link between saturable absorption,the plasmonic resonances of the unit cell and their distribution in a 2D metasurface,and finally provide a practical implementation by integrating the metasurfaces into a fiber laser cavity operating in pulsed regimes driven by the metasurface properties.As such,this work provides new perspectives on ultrathin nonlinear saturable absorbers for applications where tunable nonlinear transfer functions are needed,such as in ultrafast lasers or neuromorphic circuits. | Jiyong Wang Aurelien Coillet Olivier Demichel Zhiqiang Wang Davi Rego Alexandre Bouhelier Philippe Grelu Benoit Cluzel | 2020 | Light(Science & Applications)2020,9,1: | 3 |
