1Hepatitis C virus infection and type 1 and type 2 diabetes mellitus显示文摘Hepatitis C virus(HCV) infection and diabetes mellitus are two major public health problems that cause devastating health and financial burdens worldwide. Diabetes can be classified into two major types: type 1 diabetes mellitus(T1DM) and T2 DM. T2 DM is a common endocrine disorder that encompasses multifactorial mechanisms, and T1 DM is an immunologically mediated disease. Many epidemiological studies have shown an association between T2 DM and chronic hepatitis C(CHC) infection. The processes through which CHC is associated with T2 DM seem to involve direct viral effects, insulin resistance, proinflammatory cytokines, chemokines, and other immunemediated mechanisms. Few data have been reported on the association of CHC and T1 DM and reports on the potential association between T1 DM and acute HCV infection are even rarer. A small number of studies indicate that interferon-α therapy can stimulate pancreatic autoim-munity and in certain cases lead to the development of T1 DM. Diabetes and CHC have important interactions. Diabetic CHC patients have an increased risk of developing cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma compared with nondiabetic CHC subjects. However, clinical trials on HCV-positive patients have reported improvements in glucose metabolism after antiviral treatment. 2Immune-mediated bile duct injury:The case of primary biliary cirrhosis显示文摘Autoimmune cholangitis would be the appropriate name to define the immune-mediated bile duct injury following the breakdown of tolerance to mitochondrial proteins and the appearance of serum autoantibodies and autoreactive T cells.Nevertheless,the conditionis universally named primary biliary cirrhosis(PBC).The disease etiology and pathogenesis remain largely unknown despite the proposed lines of evidence.One twin study and numerous epidemiology reportssuggest that both a susceptible genetic background and environmental factors determine disease onsetwhile a recent genome-wide association study proposed highly significant associations with several commongenetic polymorphisms in subgroups of patients.Specific infectious agents and chemicals may contribute to the disease onset and perpetuation in a geneticallysusceptible host,possibly through molecular mimicry.Importantly,several murine models have been proposed and include strains in which PBC is genetically determined or induced by immunization with chemicals and bacteria.From a pathogenetic standpoint,new exciting data have demonstrated the unique apoptotic features of bile duct cells that allow the mitochondrial autoantigens to be taken up in their intact form within apoptotic blebs.We are convinced that the application of the most recent molecular techniques will soon pro-vide developments in PBC etiology and pathogenesis with likely implications in diagnostics and therapeutics.Carlo Selmi Andrea Affronti Laura Ferrari Pietro Invernizzi 2010World Journal of Gastrointestinal Pathophysiology2010,1,4:6
3Unscrambling light-automatically undoing strong mixing between modes显示文摘Propagation of light beams through scattering or multimode systems may lead to the randomization of the spatial coherence of the light.Although information is not lost,its recovery requires a coherent interferometric reconstruction of the original signals,which have been scrambled into the modes of the scattering system.Here we show that we can automatically unscramble optical beams that have been arbitrarily mixed in a multimode waveguide,undoing the scattering and mixing between the spatial modes through a mesh of silicon photonics tuneable beam splitters.Transparent light detectors integrated in a photonic chip are used to directly monitor the evolution of each mode along the mesh,allowing sequential tuning and adaptive individual feedback control of each beam splitter.The entire mesh self-configures automatically through a progressive tuning algorithm and resets itself after significantly perturbing the mixing,without turning off the beams.We demonstrate information recovery by the simultaneous unscrambling,sorting and tracking of four mixed modes,with residual cross-talk of−20 dB between the beams.Circuit partitioning assisted by transparent detectors enables scalability to meshes with a higher port count and to a higher number of modes without a proportionate increase in the control complexity.The principle of self-configuring and self-resetting in optical systems should be applicable in a wide range of optical applications.Andrea Annoni Emanuele Guglielmi Marco Carminati Giorgio Ferrari Marco Sampietro David AB Miller Andrea Melloni Francesco Morichetti 2017Light(Science & Applications)2017,6,1:4

6Antibacterial,pro-angiogenic and pro-osteointegrative zein-bioactive glass/copper based coatings for implantable stainless steel aimed at bone healing显示文摘Stainless steel implants are suitable candidates for bone replacement due to their cytocompatibility and mechanical resistance,but they suffer from lack of bioactivity and are prone to bacterial infections.Accordingly,to overcome those limitations,in this study we developed by electrophoretic deposition(EPD),an innovative surface coating made of(i)zein,a natural fibroblast-friendly polymer,(ii)bioactive glass,a pro-osteogenic inorganic material and(iii)copper containing bioactive glass,an antibacterial and pro-angiogenic material.FESEM images confirmed that porous,uniform and free of cracks coatings were obtained by EPD;moreover,coatings were resistant to mechanical stress as demonstrated by the tape test,resulting in a 4B classification of adhesion to the substrate.The coatings were cytocompatible as indicated by metabolism evaluation of human fibroblasts,endothelial cells and mature or progenitor osteoblasts cultivated in direct contact with the specimens.They also maintained pro-osteogenic properties towards undifferentiated progenitor cells that expressed osteogenic genes after 15 days of direct cultivation.Copper conferred antibacterial properties as biofilm formation of the joint pathogens Staphylococcus aureus,Staphylococcus epidermidis and Escherichia coli was significantly reduced in comparison with copper-free coatings(p<0.05).Moreover,this anti-infective activity resulted as targeted towards bacteria while the cells viability was preserved when cells and bacteria were cultivated in the same environment by a co-culture assay.Finally,copper ability to recruit blood vessels and to inhibit bacterial infection was confirmed in vivo where the growth of S.aureus biofilm was inhibited and the formation of new(<50μm diameter spread)blood vessels was observed.Laura Ramos Rivera Andrea Cochis Sarah Biser Elena Canciani Sara Ferraris Lia Rimondini Aldo R.Boccaccini 2021Bioactive Materials2021,6,5:2

8Long-term results of suppressing thyroid-stimulating hormone during radiotherapy to prevent primary hypothyroidism in medulloblastoma/PNET and Hodgkin lymphoma:a prospective cohort study显示文摘Primary hypothyroidism commonly occurs after radiotherapy(RT),and coincides with increased circulating thyroid-stimulating hormone(TSH)levels.We tested therefore the protective effect of suppressing TSH with L-thyroxine during RT for medulloblastoma/PNET and Hodgkin lymphoma(HL)in a prospective cohort study.From 1998 to 2001,a total of 37 euthyroid children with medulloblastoma/PNET plus 14 with HL,scheduled for craniospinal irradiation and mediastinum/neck radiotherapy,respectively,underwent thyroid ultrasound and free triiodothyronine(FT3),free thyroxine(FT4),and TSH evaluation at the beginning and end of craniospinal iiradiation.From 14 days before and up to the end of radiotherapy,patients were administered L-thyroxine checking every 3 days TSH to ensure a value<0.3μIU/mL.During follow-up,blood tests and ultrasound were repeated;primary hypothyroidism was considered an increased TSH level greater than normal range.Twenty-two/37 patients with medulloblastoma/PNET and all the 14 patients with HL were alive after a median 231 months from radiotherapy with 7/22 and 8/14 having correctly reached TSH levels˂0.3μIU/mL and well matched for other variables.Twenty years on,hypothyroidism-free survival rates differed significantly,being 60%±15%and 15.6%±8.2%in TSH-suppressed vs.not-TSH suppressed patients,respectively(P=0.001).These findings suggest that hypothyroidism could be durably prevented in two populations at risk of late RT sequelae,but it should be confirmed in a larger cohort.Maura Massimino Marta Podda Lorenza Gandola Emanuele Pignoli Ettore Seregni Carlo Morosi Filippo Spreafico Andrea Ferrari Emilia Pecori Monica Terenziani 2021Frontiers of Medicine2021,15,1:2

10Coherent self-control of free-space optical beams with integrated silicon photonic meshes显示文摘In technologies operating at light wavelengths for wireless communication,sensor networks,positioning,and ranging,a dynamic coherent control and manipulation of light fields is an enabling element for properly generating and correctly receiving free-space optical(FSO)beams even in the presence of unpredictable objects and turbulence in the light path.In this work,we use a programmable mesh of Mach-Zehnder(MZI)interferometers to automatically control the complex field radiated and captured by an array of optical antennas.The implementation of local feedback control loops in each MZI stage,without global multivariable optimization techniques,enables an unlimited scalability.Several functionalities are demonstrated,including the generation of perfectly shaped beams with nonperfect optical antennas,the imaging of a desired field pattern through an obstacle or a diffusive medium,and the identification of an unknown obstacle inserted in the FSO path.Compared to conventional devices used for the manipulation of FSO beams,such as spatial light modulators,our programmable device can self-configure through automated control strategies and can be integrated with other functionalities implemented onto the same photonic chip.MAZIYAR MILANIZADEH FABIO TOSO GIORGIO FERRARI TIGERS JONUZI DAVID A.B.MILLER ANDREA MELLONI FRANCESCO MORICHETTI 2021Photonics Research2021,9,11:1
