| 2 | In situ strength of coal bed based on the size effect study on the uniaxial compressive strength显示文摘In the early 1990 s, the Foundation for Science and Technology of Rio Grande do Sul State(CIENTEC)developed a pioneering study in Brazil, related to the simultaneous mining of multiple coal seams.One of the activities included detailed studies on the geomechanical characterization of materials present in the Irapua coal seam, under exploitation in the A-Sangao Mine, located near the city of Criciuma-SC,within the South-Catarinense coalfield. The goal of the laboratory tests was to define the behavior of the uniaxial compressive strength of the Irapua coal seam and establish a first approximation for the in situ strength value of this coal seam, since existing knowledge is solely based on practical mining experience over the years. Large samples of the coal seam were collected, using special techniques to maintain the integrity of the material, and a set of 56 uniaxial compression tests in cubic specimens, with side length ranging from 4.5 to 31 cm, were conducted in laboratory. This paper describes the experimental techniques used in the assays, and also presents the uniaxial compression strength results obtained.Moreover, important aspects of this type of study are considered, highlighting the size effect for the carbonaceous bed and the estimation of in situ strength values for the Irapua coal seam. | Gonzatti C. | 6 | Radiological response and inflammation scores predict tumour recurrence in patients treated with transarterial chemoembolization before liver transplantation显示文摘AIM To investigate the prognostic value of the radiological response after transarterial chemoembolization(TACE)and inflammatory markers in patients affected by hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)awaiting liver transplantation(LT).METHODS We retrospectively evaluated the preoperative pre dictors of HCC recurrence in 70 patients treated with conventional(n=16)or doxorubicin-eluting bead TACE(n=54)before LT.The patient and tumour characteristics,including the static and dynamic alpha-fetoprotein,neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio( LR)measurements,were recorded.Treatment response was classified according to the modified Response Evaluation Criteria in Solid Tumours(m RECIST)and the European Association for the Study of the Liver(EASL)criteria as complete response(CR),partial response( R),stable disease o progressive disease.After examination of the explanted livers,histological necrosis was classified as complete(100%of the cumulative tumour area),partia(50%-99%)or minimal(<50%)and was correlated with the preoperative radiological findings.RESULTS According to the pre-TACE radiological evaluation,22/70(31.4%)and 12/70(17.1%)patients were beyond Milan and University of San Francisco(UCSF)criteria,respectively.After TACE procedures,the objective response(CR+ R)rates were 71.4%and 70.0%according to m RECIST and EASL criteria,respectively.The agreement between the two guidelines in defining the radiological response was rated as very good both for the overall and target lesion response(weighted k-value:0.98 and 0.93,respectively).Complete and partial histological necrosis were achieved in 14/70(20.0%)and 28/70(40.0%)patients,respectively.Using histopathology as the reference standard,m RECIST criteria correctly classified necrosis in 72.9%(51/70)of patients and EASL criteria in 68.6%(48/70)of cases.The m RECIST non-response to TACE[Exp(b)=9.2, =0.012],exceeding UCSF criteria before TACE[Exp(b)=4.7, =0.033]and a preoperative LR>150[Exp(b)=5.9, =0.046]were independent predictors of tumour recurrence.CONCLUSION The radiological response and inflammatory markers are predictive of tumour recurrence and allow the proper selection of TACE-treated candidates for LT. | Daniele Nicolini Andrea Agostini Roberto Montalti Federico Mocchegiani Cinzia Mincarelli Alessandra Mandolesi Nicola L Robertson Roberto Candelari Andrea Giovagnoni Marco Vivarelli | 2017 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2017，23，20： | 4 |
| 7 | Effect of arsenic on tolerance mechanisms of two plant growth-promoting bacteria used as biological inoculants显示文摘Bacterial ability to colonize the rhizosphere of plants in arsenic(As) contaminated soils is highly important for symbiotic and free-living plant growth-promoting rhizobacteria(PGPR)used as inoculants, since they can contribute to enhance plant As tolerance and limit metalloid uptake by plants. The aim of this work was to study the effect of As on growth,exopolysaccharide(EPS) production, biofilm formation and motility of two strains used as soybean inoculants, Bradyrhizobium japonicum E109 and Azospirillum brasilense Az39. The metabolism of arsenate(As(V)) and arsenite(As(III)) and their removal and/or possible accumulation were also evaluated. The behavior of both bacteria under As treatment was compared and discussed in relation to their potential for colonizing plant rhizosphere with high content of the metalloid. B. japonicum E109 growth was reduced with As(III)concentration from 10 μM while A. brasilense Az39 showed a reduction of growth with As(III) from 500 μM. EPS and biofilm production increased significantly under 25 μM As(III)for both strains. Moreover, this was more notorious for Azospirillum under 500 μM As(III),where motility was seriously affected. Both bacterial strains showed a similar ability to reduce As(V). However, Azospirillum was able to oxidize more As(III)(around 53%) than Bradyrhizobium(17%). In addition, both strains accumulated As in cell biomass. The behavior of Azospirillum under As treatments suggests that this strain would be able to colonize efficiently As contaminated soils.
