| 1 | Review of magnesium-based biomaterials and their applications显示文摘In biomedical applications,the conventionally used metallic materials,including stainless steel,Co-based alloys and Ti alloys,often times exhibit unsatisfactory results such as stress shielding and metal ion releases.Secondary surgical operation(s)usually become inevitable to prevent long term exposure of body with the toxic implant contents.The metallic biomaterials are being revolutionized with the development of biodegradable materials including several metals,alloys,and metallic glasses.As such,the nature of metallic biomaterials are transformed from the bioinert to bioactive and multi-biofunctional(anti-bacterial,anti-proliferation,anti-cancer,etc.).Magnesium-based biomaterials are candidates to be used as new generation biodegradable metals.Magnesium(Mg)can dissolve in body fluid that means the implanted Mg can degrade during healing process,and if the degradation is controlled it would leave no debris after the completion of healing.Hence,the need for secondary surgical operation(s)for the implant removal could be eliminated.Besides its biocompatibility,the inherent mechanical properties of Mg are very similar to those of human bone.Researchers have been working on synthesis and characterization of Mg-based biomaterials with a variety of composition in order to control the degradation rate of Mg since uncontrolled degradation could result in loss of mechanical integrity,metal contamination in the body and intolerable hydrogen evolution by tissue.It was observed that the applied methods of synthesis and the choice of components affect the characteristics and performance of the Mg-based biomaterials.Researchers have synthesized many Mg-based materials through several synthesis routes and investigated their mechanical properties,biocompatibility and degradation behavior through in vitro,in vivo and in silico studies.This paper is a comprehensive review that compiles,analyses and critically discusses the recent literature on the important aspects of Mg-based biomaterials. | Nurettin Sezer Zafer Evis Said Murat Kayhan Aydin Tahmasebifar Muammer Koça | 2018 | Journal of Magnesium and Alloys2018,6,1: | 38 |
| 2 | Gastrointestinal bezoars: A retrospective analysis of 34 cases显示文摘AIM: Bezoars (BZ) are the most common foreign bodies of gastrointestinal tract. Clinical manifestations vary depending on the location of BZ from no symptoms to acute abdominal syndrome. When located in small bowel, they frequently cause small bowel obstruction (SBO). We aimed to present our experience by reviewing literature.METHODS: Thirty-four patients with gastrointestinal BZ were presented. The data were collected from hospital records and analyzed retrospectively. Morbidity and mortality rates were statistically analyzed between the subgroups according to SBO and endoscopic or surgical treatment modalities.RESULTS: The 34 patients had phytobezoars (PBZ). Two patients with mental retardation and trichotillomania had trichobezoars (TBZ). More than half of them (55.88%) had previous gastric surgery. Also most of them had small bowel bezoars resulting in obstruction. Surgical and endoscopic morbidity rates were 32.14% and 14.28% respectively.The total morbidity rate of this study was 29.41%. Four patients in surgically treated group died. There was no death in endoscopically treated group. The total and surgical mortality rates were 11.76% and 14.28% respectively. The differences in morbidity and mortality rates between the subgroups were not statistically significant.CONCLUSION: BZ are commonly seen in stomach and small intestine. | 4 | Sol–gel derived Ta-containing TiO_2 films on surface roughened NiTi alloy显示文摘The surface of NiTi alloy was roughened by NaOH–HCl treatment, and the Ta-containing TiO2 films were coated on the pretreated NiTi alloy by the sol–gel method. Thermal analyses indicate that the evaporation temperature of the organics decreases with the addition of tantalum ethoxide in the TiO2 sol, but the crystallization temperature of anatase increases. The NaOH–HCl pretreatment improves the film integrity, but cracks still form in the films at high Ta contents(C20 %, molar ratio) owing to the increasing film thickness. X-ray diffraction(XRD) confirms that the addition of Ta suppresses the crystallization of anatase. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy(XPS) reveals that Ta exists as Ta2 O5 in the film. With the increase of Ta content, the hydrophilic conversion of the films under UV illumination is impeded, but their corrosion resistance in 0.9 % NaCl solution increases, tested by the potentiodynamic polarization. The coating samples have acceptable hemolysis ratios for biomaterials(\5). | 5 | Adipokines and ghrelin in gastric cancer cachexia显示文摘AIM:To investigate the roles of the adipocytokines,ghrelin and leptin in gastric cancer cachexia. METHODS:Resistin,ghrelin,leptin,adiponectin,insulin and insulin-like growth factor(IGF-Ⅰ),were measured in 30 healthy subjects,and 60 gastric cancer patients of which 30 suffered from cancer-induced cachexia and 30 served as a control group. The relationships between hormones,body mass index(BMI) loss ratio,age,gender,and Glasgow Prognostic Score(GPS) were investigated. RESULTS:Cachexia patients had higher tumor stage and GPS when compared with non-cachexia patients(P < 0.05). Ghrelin,resistin,leptin,adiponectin and IGF-Ⅰ,showed a significant correlation with BMI loss ratio and GPS(P < 0.05). A strong correlation was seen between GPS and BMI loss(R = -0.570,P < 0.0001). Multivariate analysis indicated that BMI loss was significantly independent as a predictor of ghrelin,resistin,leptin and IGF-Ⅰ(P < 0.05). Existence of an important significant relationship between resistin and insulin resistance was also noted. CONCLUSION:These results showed that serum ghrelin,leptin,adiponectin,and IGF-Ⅰ play important roles in cachexia-related gastric cancers. No relationshipwas found between resistin and cancer cachexia. | 8 | Etiological role of brucellosis in autoimmune hepatitis显示文摘To show that brucellosis may trigger autoimmune hepatitis(AIH), in addition to nonspecific liver involvement and toxic hepatitis, due to a class effect of tetracycline family used for treatment. We present a female patient admitted to our hospital due to partially improved fatigue and elevated liver enzymes following doxycycline and streptomycin usage for brucellosis. Brucellosis is endemic in our country, Turkey. It may involve any organ in the body. Liver is frequently involved. Doxycycline used for treatment occasionally may lead to hepatotoxicity. AIH is a necroinflammatory disease of the liver. Certain drugs (e.g. Minocycline), toxins, and viruses (hepatitis B, hepatitis C, EBV, etc.) can trigger AIH. Only one case of AIH probably caused by doxycycline and brucellosis was reported. We discuss the relationship between brucellosis, AIH, and hepatotoxicity of doxycycline. | 9 | Investigation and modeling of water quality of Goksu River (Cleadnos) in an international pro- tected area by using GIS显示文摘Gksu Delta is an important wetland where the Gksu River reaches to sea in the eastern of the town Tasucu-Ice1. The delta is classified as a Wetland of International Impor-tance according to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance. The amount of fertilizers used in this area was 7200 tons in 2006. These pollutants affect the surface and groundwater quality negatively. The intensively used fertilizers and pesticides contain not only N- and P compounds but also some heavy metals. The contents of all pol-lutants in surface waters were determined for four different seasons between 2006 and 2008 and with these data a Geographic Information System (GIS) has been constructed by using Map Info. From the photometric heavy metal analysis, it is inferred that the excess concen-tration of Fe, Ni, Mn, Mo and Cu at some locations is the cause of undesirable quality for drinking purposes. The source of excess concentration of various heavy metals is the agri-cultural activities and fertilizers. It is determined that in all periods between 2006 and 2008 the heavy metals and other pollutants in the fertilizers and pesticides transported easily to river water with irrigation return flow. The organic pollutants, including COD, BOD, NH3 and NO3 followed the sharply increasing trends from Silifke city to Mediterranean Sea. | 13 | Reaching proficiency in laparoscopic splenectomy显示文摘AIM:To investigate the proficiency level reached in laparoscopic splenectomy using the learning curve method.METHODS:All patients in need of splenectomy for benign causes in whom laparoscopic splenectomy was attempted by a single surgeon during a time period of 6 years were included in the study (n=33). Besides demographics, operation-related variables and the response to surgery were recorded. The patients were allocated to groups of five, ranked according to the date of the operation. Operation duration, complications, postoperative length of stay, conversion to laparotomy and splenic weight were then compared between these groups.RESULTS: There was a significant difference regarding operation times between the groups (P = 0.001). An improvement was observed after the first 5 cases. The learning curve was flat up to the 25th case. Following the 25th case the operation times decreased still further. There was no difference between the groups regarding the other parameters.CONCLUSION: Unlike the widely accepted 'L' shape, the learning curve for laparoscopic splenectomy is a horizontal lazy 'S' with two distinct slopes. Privileges may be granted after the first 5 cases. | 20 | Safety of hydroimplantation in cataract surgery in patients with pseudoexfoliation syndrome显示文摘AIM:To evaluate the safety of hydroimplantation in cataract surgery in patients with pseudoexfoliation syndrome.METHODS:This prospective randomized study comprised 100 eyes of 100 consecutive patients who underwent cataract surgery and implantation of foldable intraocular lens(IOL). Each eye was assigned to group 1 or group 2. Hydroimplantation without using viscoelastic agent as group 1(n=50), and hydroxypropylmethylcellulose(Eyevisc, Biotech, India) was used in group 2(n=50). RESULTS:There were no statistically significant differences in central corneal thickness(CCT) and corneal endothelial cell count(ECC) between both groups at each visit and percentage change in CCT and ECC(P>0.05). The mean intraocular pressure(IOP) at postoperative 5h increased statistically significantly in group 2(P<0.001). There was no statistically significant difference in IOP between two groups, before and after surgery excluding the 24 h postoperative IOP, but patients in group 2 had higher IOP than that in the group 1 at 24 h after surgery(P=0.035). No case in either group experienced posterior capsular rupture, or zonular dialysis.
