Time range of Mesozoic tectonic regime inversion in eastern North China Block显示文摘An important tectonic inversion took place in eastern North China Block(NCB) during Mesozoic, which caused a great lithosphere thinning, reconstruction of basin-range series, powerful interaction between mantle and crust, a vast granitic intrusion and volcanism, and large-scale metallogenic explosion. The time range of the Mesozoic tectonic regime inversion in the eastern North China Block is one of the key issues to understand mechanism of tectonic regime inversion. Our updated results for recognizing the time range are mainly obtained from the following aspects: structural analyses along northern and southern margins of the NCB and within the NCB for revealing tectonic inversion from compression to extension and structural striking from ~EW to NNE; geothermic analyses of the eastern sedimental basins for a great change of thermal history and regime; basin analysis for basin inversion from compression to extension and basin migration from ~EW to NNE; petrological and geochemical studies of volcanic rocks and lowermost crust xenoliths for recognizing peak period of mantle upwelling and intense interaction between mantle and crust, and main metallogenic epoch. All the studies of the above give the same time range from~150-140 Ma to ~110-100Ma, peaking at ~120 Ma.ZHAI Mingguo ZHU Rixiang LIU Jianming MENG Qingren HOU Quanlin HU Shengbiao LIU Wei LI Zhong ZHANG Hongfu ZHANG Huafeng 2004Science China Earth Sciences2004,47,2:89
Destruction geodynamics of the North China Craton and its Paleoproterozoic plate tectonics显示文摘Much attention has been paid in the last two decades to the physical and chemical processes as well as temporal-spatial variations of the lithospheric mantle beneath the North China Craton. In order to provide insights into the geodynamics of this variation, it is necessary to thoroughly study the state and structure of the lithospheric crust and mantle of the North China Craton and its adjacent regions as an integrated unit. Based on the velocity structure of the crust and upper mantle constrained from seismological studies, this paper presents various available geophysical results regarding the lithosphere thickness, the nature of crust-mantle boundary, the upper mantle structure and deformation characteristics as well as their tectonic features and evolution systematics. Combined with the obtained data from petrology and geochemistry, a mantle flow model is proposed for the tectonic evolution of the North China Craton during the Mesozoic-Cenozoic. We suggest that subduction of the Pacific plate made the mantle underneath the eastern Asian continent unstable and able to flow faster. Such a regional mantle flow system would cause an elevation of melt/fluid content in the upper mantle of the North China Craton and the lithospheric softening, which, subsequently resulted in destruction of the North China Craton in different ways of delamination and thermal erosion in Yanshan, Taihang Mountains and the Tan-Lu Fault zone. Multiple lines of evidence recorded in the crust of the North China Craton, such as the amalgamation of the Archean eastern and western blocks, the subduction of Paleo-oceanic crust and Paleo-continental residue, indicate that the Earth in the Paleoproterozoic had already evolved into the plate tectonic system similar to the present plate tectonics.ZHU RiXiang ZHENG TianYu 2009Chinese Science Bulletin2009,54,19:89
Timing, scale and mechanism of the destruction of the North China Craton显示文摘The North China Craton (NCC) is a classical example of ancient destroyed cratons.Since the initiation of the North China Craton Destruction Project by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, numerous studies have been conducted on the timing, scale, and mechanism of this destruction through combined interdisciplinary research.Available data suggest that the destruction occurred mainly in the eastern NCC,whereas the western NCC was only locally modified. The sedimentation, magmatic activities and structural deformation after cratonization at ~1.8 Ga indicate that the NCC destruction took place in the Mesozoic with a peak age of ca 125 Ma.A global comparison suggests that most cratons on Earth are not destroyed, although they have commonly experienced lithospheric thinning;destruction is likely to occur only when the craton has been disturbed by oceanic subduction. The destruction of the NCC was coincident with globally active plate tectonics and high mantle temperatures during the Cretaceous. The subducted Pacific slab destabilized mantle convection beneath the eastern NCC,which resulted in cratonic destruction in the eastern NCC.Delamination and/or thermal-mechanical-chemical erosion resulted from the destabilization of mantle convection.ZHU RiXiang CHEN Ling WU FuYuan LIU JunLai 2011Science China Earth Sciences2011,54,6:178
Destruction of the North China Craton显示文摘A National Science Foundation of China(NSFC) major research project,Destruction of the North China Craton(NCC),has been carried out in the past few years by Chinese scientists through an in-depth and systematic observations, experiments and theoretical analyses, with an emphasis on the spatio-temporal distribution of the NCC destruction, the structure of deep earth and shallow geological records of the craton evolution, the mechanism and dynamics of the craton destruction. From this work the following conclusions can be drawn:(1) Significant spatial heterogeneity exists in the NCC lithospheric thickness and crustal structure, which constrains the scope of the NCC destruction.(2) The nature of the Paleozoic,Mesozoic and Cenozoic sub-continental lithospheric mantle(CLM) underneath the NCC is characterized in detail. In terms of water content, the late Mesozoic CLM was rich in water, but Cenozoic CLM was highly water deficient.(3) The correlation between magmatism and surface geological response confirms that the geological and tectonic evolution is governed by cratonic destruction processes.(4) Pacific subduction is the main dynamic factor that triggered the destruction of the NCC,which highlights the role of cratonic destruction in plate tectonics.ZHU RiXiang XU YiGang ZHU Guang ZHANG HongFu XIA QunKe ZHENG TianYu 2012Science China Earth Sciences2012,55,10:119
Decratonic gold deposits显示文摘The North China Craton(NCC) hosts numerous gold deposits and is known as the most gold-productive region of China. The gold deposits were mostly formed within a few million years in the Early Cretaceous(130–120 Ma), coeval with widespread occurrences of bimodal magmatism, rift basins and metamorphic core complexes that marked the peak of lithospheric thinning and destruction of the NCC. Stable isotope data and geological evidence indicate that ore-forming fluids and other components were largely exsolved from cooling magma and/or derived from mantle degassing during the period of lithospheric extension. Gold mineralization in the NCC contrasts strikingly with that of other cratons where gold ore-forming fluids were sourced mostly from metamorphic devolatization in compressional or transpressional regimes. In this paper, we present a summary and discussion on time-space distribution and ore genesis of gold deposits in the NCC in the context of the timing, spatial variation, and decratonic processes. Compared with orogenic gold deposits in other cratonic blocks, the Early Cretaceous gold deposits in the NCC are quite distinct in that they were deposited from magma-derived fluids under extensional settings and associated closely with destruction of cratonic lithosphere. We argue that Early Cretaceous gold deposits in the NCC cannot be classified as orogenic gold deposits as previously suggested, rather, they are a new type of gold deposits, termed as 'decratonic gold deposits' in this study. The westward subduction of the paleo-West Pacific plate(the Izanagi plate) beneath the eastern China continent gave rise to an optimal tectonic setting for large-scale gold mineralization in the Early Cretaceous. Dehydration of the subducted and stagnant slab in the mantle transition zone led to continuous hydration and considerable metasomatism of the mantle wedge beneath the NCC. As a consequence, the refractory mantle became oxidized and highly enriched in large ion lithophile elements and chalcophile elements(e.g., Cu, Au, Ag and Te). Partial melting of such a mantle would have produced voluminous hydrous, Au- and S-bearing basaltic magma, which, together with crust-derived melts induced by underplating of basaltic magma, served as an important source for ore-forming fluids. It is suggested that the Eocene Carlin-type gold deposits in Nevada, occurring geologically in the deformed western margin of the North America Craton, are comparable with the Early Cretaceous gold deposits of the NCC because they share similar tectonic settings and auriferous fluids. The NCC gold deposits are characterized by gold-bearing quartz veins in the Archean amphibolite facies rocks, whereas the Nevada gold deposits are featured by fine-grained sulfide dissemination in Paleozoic marine sedimentary rocks. Their main differences in gold mineralization are the different host rocks, ore-controlling structures, and ore-forming depth. The similar tectonic setting and ore-forming fluid source, however, indicate that the Carlin-type gold deposits in Nevada are actually analogous to decratonic gold deposits in the NCC. Gold deposits in both the NCC and Nevada were formed in a relatively short time interval(<10 Myr) and become progressively younger toward the subduction zone. Younging of gold mineralization toward subduction zone might have been attributed to retreat of subduction zone and rollback of subducted slab. According to the ages of gold deposits on inland and marginal zones, the retreat rates of the Izanagi plate in the western Pacific in the Early Cretaceous and the Farallon plate of the eastern Pacific in the Eocene are estimated at 8.8 cm/yr and 3.3 cm/yr, respectively.ZHU RiXiang FAN HongRui LI JianWei MENG QingRen LI ShengRong ZENG QingDong 2015Science China Earth Sciences2015,58,9:37
The subduction of the west Pacific plate and the destruction of the North China Craton显示文摘While a general concensus has recently been reached as to the causal relationship between the subduction of the west Pacific plate and the destruction of the North China Craton, a number of important questions remain to answer, including the initial subduction of west Pacific plate beneath the eastern Asian continent, the position of west Pacific subduction zone during the peak period of decratonization(i.e., Early Cretaceous), the formation age of the big mantle wedge under eastern Asia, and the fate of the subducted Pacific slab. Integration of available data suggests that the subduction of the western Pacific plate was initiated as early as Early Jurrasic and the subduction zone was situated to 2,200 km west of the present-day trench in the Early Creataceous, as a result of eastward migration of the Asian continent over a distance of ca. 900 km since the Early Cretaceous. The retreat of the subducting west Pacific plate started ~145 Ma ago, corresponding to the initial formation of the big mantle wedge system in the Early Cretaceous. The subduction of the Pacific slab excerted severe influence on the North China Craton most likely through material and energy echange between the big mantle wedge and overlying cratonic lithosphere. The evolution history of the west Pacific plate was reconstructed based on tectonic events. This allows to propose that the causes of phases A and B for the Yanshanian orogeny were respectively related to rapid low-angle subduction and to lowering subduction angle of the west Pacific plate. At ca. 130–120 Ma, the subduction of the west Pacific plate was characterized by increasing subducting angle, slab rollback and rapid trench retreat, leading to the final stagnation of the subducting slab within the mantle transition zone. This process may have significantly affected the physical property and viscosity of the mantle wedge above the stagnant slab, resulting in non-steady mantle flows. The ingression of slab-released melts/fluids would significantly lower the viscosity of the mantle wedge and overlying lithosphere, inducing decratonization. This study yields important bearings on the relationship between the subduction of the west Pacific plate and the evolution of the lithospheric mantle beneath the North China Craton.Rixiang ZHU Yigang XU 2019Science China Earth Sciences2019,62,9:38
Paleomagnetic data from Early Cretaceous volcanic rocks of West Liaoning:Evidence for intracontinental rotation显示文摘Detailed rock magnetic studies of 55 lavas from Yixian and Fuxin area, West Liaoning, show the primary carriers of remanence to be pseudo-single domain ti-tanomagnetite. K/Ar dating indicates that the volcanic sequence spans 93 to 133 Ma. Stepwise thermal demagnetization successfully isolated well-defined characteristic magnetization (ChRM) in all lavas thermal-treated above 250℃ The mean paleodirections are D/I=5.9°/58.8° (α95 = 2.9°) and D/I =179.2°/-59.9° (α95 = 5.2°) for 27 normally magnetized flows and 28 reversibly magnetized flows, respectively. It indicates that since the Early Cretaceous there is no significant horizontal movement and rotation between the Yixian-Fuxin area and Eurasia. However, Korea Peninsula may have undergone a clockwise rotation of 33.9° relative to the Yixian-Fuxin area during the Cretaceous. On the basis of characteristics of hotspot origins (core-mantle boundary or upper mantle), the clockwise rotation of Korea Peninsula relative to Eurasia is assumed to beZHU Rixiang SHAO Ji’an PAN Yongxin SHI Ruiping SHI Guanghai LI Darning 2002Chinese Science Bulletin2002,47,21:31
Thinning and destruction of the cratonic lithosphere:A global perspective显示文摘It has been proposed that the North China Craton(NCC)was thinned up to a thickness of>100 km during the Phanerozoic, and underwent an associated craton destruction.Evidently,it is an important topic worthy of future study to understanding the mechanism of cratonic destruction and its role played in the continental evolution. After synthesized the global cratons of India,Brazil,South Africa,Siberia,East Europe(Baltic)and North America,we found that lithospheric thinning is common in the cratonic evolution, but it is not always associated with craton destruction. Most cratons was thinned by thermal erosion of mantle plume or mantle upwelling, which, however, may not cause craton destruction.Based on the studies of the North American and North China Cratons,we suggest that oceanic subduction plays an important role in caton destruction.Fluids or melts released by dehydration of the subducted slabs metasomatize the mantle wedge above and trigger extensive partial melting.More importantly, the metasomatized mantle lost its original rigidity and make craton easier to be deformed and then to be destoyed. Therefore,we suggest that the widespread crust-derived granite and large-scale ductile deformation within the continental crust can be regarded as the petrological and structural indicators of craton destruction, respectively.WU FuYuan XU YiGang ZHU RiXiang ZHANG GuoWei 2014Science China Earth Sciences2014,57,12:33
The application of large volume airgun sources to the onshore-offshore seismic surveys: implication of the experimental results in northern South China Sea显示文摘Onshore-offshore seismic experiments were carried out for the first time in northern South China Sea using large volume airgun sources at sea and seismic stations on land. The experimental results indicate that seismic signals from the new airgun array of R/V Shiyan 2 can be detected as far as 255 km. The signal effective area reaches nearly 50000 km2, which covers Hong Kong and Pearl River Delta. Compared with the old airgun array, the signal amplitude, propagation distance and effective area of the new airgun array have been increased notably, which demonstrates that the upgrade of the airgun source was successful. Comparisons with previous experimental results in other regions show that the shooting effect of the new airgun array is similar to those best airgun sources in the world. Especially, it is a new breakthrough in using the permanent seismic stations onshore to record long distance airgun signals offshore, which has great significance to the realization of the 'seismic radar' concept and the 3D seismic surveys of crustal structure in coastal areas.QIU XueLin CHEN Yong ZHU RiXiang XU HuiLong SHI XiaoBin YE ChunMing ZHAO MingHui XIA ShaoHong 2007Chinese Science Bulletin2007,52,4:27
SIMS U-Pb zircon age of a tuff layer in the Meishucun section, Yunnan, southwest China: Constraint on the age of the Precambrian-Cambrian boundary显示文摘Determination of the age of the Precambrian-Cambrian boundary is critical in understanding early evolution of life on Earth. SIMS U-Pb zircon analyses of the Bed 5 tuff layer of the Meishucun section were carried out closely following the guidance of cathodoluminescence images, and the majority of analyses were conducted on the oscillatory zircon grains. Thirteen measurements yield a highly reliable Concordia U-Pb age of 536.7 ± 3.9 Ma for the Bed 5 horizon. A grand mean of 206Pb/238U age of 535.2± 1.7 Ma (MSWD = 0.53) is calculated based on 13 concordant SIMS measurements of this study and 4 nano-SIMS measurements of Sawaki et al., which is the best estimate of the deposition age of the tuff layer within Bed 5 in the Meishucun section. This age has provided a robust age constraint on the significant Precambrian-Cambrian boundary strata in southern China, which independently suggested the placement of the Precambrian-Cambrian boundary at the bottom of the Xiaowaitoushan Member (Marker A).RiXiang Zhu XianHua Li XianGuang Hou YongXin Pan Fei Wang ChengLong Deng HuaiYu He 2009Science China Earth Sciences2009,52,9:24
History of the temperature-dependence of susceptibility and its implications: Preliminary results along an E-W transect of the Chinese Loess Plateau显示文摘An investigation of rock magnetic properties using the temperature-dependence ofsusceptibility (TDS) and the coercivity of different IRM components was conducted on samples ofthe Malan loess (L1) and the last interglacial soil (S1) along an E-W transect of the Chinese LoessPlateau. We find that the behavior of the TDS is useful in identifying maghemite (γ-Fe2O3) in bothloess and paleosol, and that it can be used as a new proxy of the degree of pedogenesis, which isclosely linked to climatic conditions. Based on results from the TDS, we conclude that (1) thedetrital magnetite grains predominate in the L1 unit to the west of Liupan Mts, where theweathering and pedogenetic processes were weakest; (2) a comparable degree of pedogenesisexists in the L1 at the east of the Liupan Mts and the S1 at the west of the Liupan Mts; (3) a higherconcentration of maghemite is found in the S1 unit at the eastern sections, suggesting that the localclimate was warmer and more humid in this interval. In addition, we propose that TDSmeasurements can be used as a rapid means of determining the reliability of the paleomagneticsecular variation (PSV) record in loess/poleoso/sequenees.ZHU Rixiang LIN Mian PAN Yongxin 1) Institute of Geophysics. 12Cyclical one-way continental rupture-drift in the Tethyan evolution: Subduction-driven plate tectonics显示文摘Numerous continents have rifted and drifted away from Gondwana to repeatedly open ocean basins over the past-500 millionyears. These Gondwana-derived continents drifted towards and collided with components of the Eurasian continent to successively close the preexisting oceans between the two.Plate tectonics satisfactorily describes the continental drift from Gondwana to Eurasia but does not define the geodynamic mechanism of continuously rifting to collisions of continents in the Tethy an Realm. After reappraisal of geological records of the rift, collision and subduction initiation from the surface and various geophysical observations from depth,we propose that Eurasia-directed subducting oceanic slabs would have driven Tethyan system in the Phanerozoic. The Eurasia-directed subduction would have dragged the passive Gondwana margin to rift and drift northwards, giving birth to new oceans since the Paleozoic. The closure of preexisting oceans between the Gondwana-derived continents and Eurasia led to continental collisions, which would have induced the initiation of oceanic subduction in the Tethyan Realm.Multiple episodic switches between collision-subduction-rift repeatedly led to the separation of continental fragments from Gondwana and dragged them to drift towards Eurasia. The final disappearance of Neo-Tethy s would have induced collision of the Gondwana-derived continents with the Eurasian continent, giving rise to the Cenozoic Alpine-Zagros-Himalayan collisional system. Therefore, the Eurasia-directed oceanic subduction would have acted as a’one-way train’that successively transferred the ruptured Gondwana continental fragments in the south, into the terminal in the north. In this regard, the engine of this'Tethyan one-way train'is the negative buoyancy of subducting oceanic slabs.Bo WAN Fuyuan WU Ling CHEN Liang ZHAO Xiaofeng LIANG Wenjiao XIAO Rixiang ZHU 2019Science China Earth Sciences2019,62,12:21
A recording phase lag between ocean and continent climate changes: constrained by the Matuyama/Brunhes polarity boundary显示文摘The Matuyama/Brunhes polarity boundary (MBPB) is recorded in Chinese loess L8, which is associated with the glacial period. It is proved that loess L8 is capable of recording earth’s secular variation, and the lock-in depth in Chinese loess is no more than that of marine sediments. Comparison with the location of MBPB in Chinese loess and marine sediments, it is put forward that there is a recording phase lag between ocean and continent climate changes.Rixiang Zhu Yongxin Pan Bin Guo Qingsong Liu 1998Chinese Science Bulletin1998,43,19:16
Tectonic evolution and geodynamics of the Neo-Tethys Ocean显示文摘The Neo-Tethys Ocean was an eastward-gaping triangular oceanic embayment between Laurasia to the north and Gondwana to the south. The Neo-Tethys Ocean was initiated from the Early Permian with mircoblocks rifted from the northern margin of Gondwana. As the microblocks drifted northwards, the Neo-Tethys Ocean was expanded. Most of these microblocks collided with the Eurasia continent in the Late Triassic, leading to the final closure of the Paleo-Tethys Ocean, followed by oceanic subduction of the Neo-Tethys oceanic slab beneath the newly formed southern margin of the Eurasia continent. As the splitting of Gondwana continued,African-Arabian,Indian and Australian continents were separated from Gondwana and moved northwards at different rates.Collision of these blocks with the Eurasia continent occurred at different time during the Cenozoic, resulting in the closure of the Neo-Tethys Ocean and building of the most significant Alps-Zagros-Himalaya orogenic belt on Earth. The tectonic evolution of the Neo-Tethys Ocean shows different characteristics from west to east:Multi-oceanic basins expansion, bidirectional subduction and microblocks collision dominate in the Mediterranean region;northward oceanic subduction and diachronous continental collision along the Zagros suture occur in the Middle East;the Tibet and Southeast Asia are characterized by multi-block riftings from Gondwana and multi-stage collisions with the Eurasia continent. The negative buoyancy of subducting oceanic slabs can be considered as the main engine for northward drifting of Gondwana-derived blocks and subduction of the Neo-Tethys Ocean.Meanwhile, mantle convection and counterclockwise rotation of Gondwana-derived blocks and the Gondwana continent around an Euler pole in West Africa in non-free boundary conditions also controlled the evolution of the Neo-Tethys Ocean.Rixiang ZHU Pan ZHAO Liang ZHAO 2022Science China Earth Sciences2022,65,1:10
Testing the mantle plume hypothesis: an IODP effort to drill into the Kamchatka-Okhotsk Sea basement显示文摘The great mantle plume debate(GPD) has been going on for ~15 years(Foulger and Natland, 2003;Anderson, 2004; Niu, 2005; Davies, 2005; Foulger, 2005; Campbell, 2005; Campbell and Davies, 2006),centered on whether mantle plumes exist as a result of Earth's cooling or whether their existence is purely required for convenience in explaining certain Earth phenomena(Niu, 2005). Despite the mounting evidence that many of the so-called plumes may be localized melting anomalies, the debate is likely to continue. We recognize that the slow progress of the debate results from communication difficulties. Many debaters may not truly appreciate(1) what the mantle plume hypothesis actually is, and(2) none of the petrological, geochemical and geophysical methods widely used can actually provide smoking-gun evidence for or against mantle plume hypothesis. In this short paper, we clarify these issues, and elaborate a geologically effective approach to test the hypothesis. According to the mantle plume hypothesis, a thermal mantle plume must originate from the thermal boundary layer at the core-mantle boundary(CMB), and a large mantle plume head is required to carry the material from the deep mantle to the surface. The plume head product in ocean basins is the oceanic plateau, which is a lithospheric terrane that is large(1000's km across), thick(>200 km), shallow(2–4 km high above the surrounding seafloors), buoyant(~1% less dense than the surrounding lithosphere), and thus must be preserved in the surface geology(Niu et al., 2003). The Hawaiian volcanism has been considered as the surface expression of a type mantle plume, but it does not seem to have a(known) plume head product. If this is true, the Hawaiian mantle plume in particular and the mantle plume hypothesis in general must be questioned. Therefore, whether there is an oceanic plateau-like product for the Hawaiian volcanism is key to testing the mantle plume hypothesis, and the Kamchatka-Okhotsk Sea basement is the best candidate to find out if it is indeed the Hawaiian mantle plume head product or not(Niu et al., 2003; Niu, 2004).Yaoling Niu Xuefa Shi Tiegang Li Shiguo Wu Weidong Sun Rixiang Zhu 2017Science Bulletin2017,62,21:8
Rapid drift of the Tethyan Himalaya terrane before two-stage India-Asia collision显示文摘The India-Asia collision is an outstanding smoking gun in the study of continental collision dynamics. How and when the continental collision occurred remains a long-standing controversy. Here we present two new paleomagnetic data sets from rocks deposited on the distal part of the Indian passive margin, which indicate that the Tethyan Himalaya terrane was situated at a paleolatitude of∼19.4°S at∼75 Ma and moved rapidly northward to reach a paleolatitude of∼13.7°N at∼61 Ma.This implies that the Tethyan Himalaya terrane rifted from India after∼75 Ma,generating the North India Sea.We document a new two-stage continental collision, first at∼61 Ma between the Lhasa and Tethyan Himalaya terranes, and subsequently at∼53−48 Ma between the Tethyan Himalaya terrane and India, diachronously closing the North India Sea from west to east. Our scenario matches the history of India-Asia convergence rates and reconciles multiple lines of geologic evidence for the collision.Jie Yuan Zhenyu Yang Chenglong Deng Wout Krijgsman Xiumian Hu Shihu Li Zhongshan Shen Huafeng Qin Wei An Huaiyu He Lin Ding Zhengtang Guo Rixiang Zhu 2021National Science Review2021,8,7:7
Quaternary integrative stratigraphy and timescale of China显示文摘Quaternary strata in China mainly comprise continental deposits in a variety of depositional settings. The continental Quaternary in temperate northern China consists mainly of eolian and fluvio-lacustrine deposits; that in subtropical southern China, mainly of vermiculated red soils, cave/fissure deposits, and fluvio-lacustrine deposits; and that in the alpine Tibetan Plateau, mainly of fluvio-lacustrine and piedmont deposits. The marine Quaternary in China consists of detrital deposits and biogenic reef deposits. The integration of biostratigraphy, magnetostratigraphy, climatostratigraphy and an astronomically calibrated chronology has led to the establishment of high-precision climatochronostratigraphic timescales for the detrital marine Quaternary in the South China Sea and the loess-paleosol sequence in the Chinese Loess Plateau. Extremely high-precision230 Th dating has provided a high-precision absolute age model for cave stalagmites over the past 640000 years as well as highresolution oxygen isotope records representing orbital-to suborbital-scale climate changes. By combining magnetic stratigraphy and biostratigraphy, robust chronostratigraphic frameworks for non-eolian continental Quaternary deposits on the scale of Quaternary geomagnetic polarities have been established. The continental Pleistocene Series consists, from oldest to youngest,of the Nihewanian Stage of the Lower Pleistocene, the Zhoukoudianian Stage of the Middle Pleistocene, and the Salawusuan Stage of the Upper Pleistocene. Stages of the continental Holocene Series have not yet been established. This review summarizes recent developments in the Quaternary chronostratigraphy of representative Quaternary strata and associated faunas, and then proposes an integrative chronostratigraphic framework and a stratigraphic correlation scheme for Quaternary continental strata in China. In the near-future, it is hoped to establish not only a Chinese continental Quaternary climatochronostratigraphic chart on the scale of glacial-interglacial cycles but also a Quaternary integrative chronostratigraphic chart including both continental and marine strata in China.Chenglong DENG Qingzhen HAO Zhengtang GUO Rixiang ZHU 2019Science China Earth Sciences2019,62,1:7
Magnetostratigraphy of borehole EY02-2 in the southern Yellow Sea and its paleoenvironmental significance显示文摘Detailed rock magnetic and paleomag- netic studies have been undertaken on borehole EY02-2 (70m in length) in the southern Yellow Sea (SYS). The main Curie point revealed by magnetic susceptibility-temperature (k-T) curve is 580―600℃ indicating magnetite dominance. The hysteresis loop parameters show large variation of magnetic minera size in different sedimentary contexts: it is larger in subtidal sediment than in terrigenous sediment and even larger than in shallow sea sediment. This trend is correlative with distance to sediment source and dynamic strength. Magnetostratigraphic results show that the M/B polarity boundary (MBPB) is at 63.29m and there are at least 7 polarity transitions (Nr1-7) in Brunhes chron that can be tentatively correlated with 6 named polarity reversals. Three positive polarity reversals occur in late Matuyama chron and the early two may be the record of Kamikatsura happening in 886±3 kaB.P. Magnetic susceptibility (MS) and sediment grain size behave so differently in some sedimentary facies that certain big environmenta changes can be clearly revealed. Generally, the MS and grain size of subtidal and terrigenous sediments are larger than shallow sea sediments and MS value around 10×10?5SI and mean grain size of 7Φ seems to be indicators of shallow sea sediments of deep water depth. However, the frequently used excellen climatic proxies such as MS and grain size in loess and deep sea sediments fail to record such climatic cycles revealed by oxygen isotope in continental seaThe various sediment sources, sedimentation dy- namic and their complex changes between glacial and interglacial periods should be the cause of fail- ure.GE Shulan SHI Xuefa ZHU Rixiang LIU Yanguang YIN Ping LIU Lejun 2006Chinese Science Bulletin2006,51,7:6
Link between the geomagnetic polarity reversal and global-geology events显示文摘The origin of the earth’s magnetic field is one of the five most important unsolved problems in physics, especially geomagnetic polarity reversal remains one of Nature’s most enigmatic phenomena. It is proposed that the geomagnetic polarity reversal links with some global-geology events, although it is difficult to clarify the mechanism of this correlation. The history of continental structures in eastern China would be also linked with some global-geology events.Rixiang Zhu Qingsong Liu Yongxin Pan 1999Chinese Science Bulletin1999,44,20:6
He and Ar isotope geochemistry of pyroxene megacrysts and mantle xenoliths in Cenozoic basalt from the Changle–Linqu area in western Shandong显示文摘We performed a combined study of He–Ar isotopes and element geochemistry for pyroxene megacrysts and mantle xenoliths from Cenozoic basalt in the Changle–Linqu area in western Shandong. The results are used to trace the evolution of subcontinental lithospheric mantle after destruction of the North China Craton.The3He/4He ratios of pyroxene megacrysts, websterite, and dunites are 7.0–7.7 Ra,7.4 Ra,and 7.0–7.7 Ra,respectively. They are related to the origin of host basalts, and are slightly lower than that of mid-ocean ridge basalts(MORB).Their40Ar/36Ar ratios are much lower than that of MORB and close to that of air.The lherzolites and wehrlites represent the fragments of the newly accreted lithospheric mantle, and their REE and trace elements indicate that they experienced melt metasomatism and partial melting.The3He/4He ratios of their olivine are slightly lower than that of MORB,but3He/4He ratios of their clinopyroxene are low(2.3–7.1 Ra)and display an inverse correlation with(La/Yb)N.The40Ar/36Ar ratios of these clinopyroxene are much lower than that of MORB and close to the air ratio.Combining existing studies of petrology,Sr–Nd–Pb isotopes,O isotopes, trace elements, and Mg isotopes,we infer that the juvenile lithospheric mantle in the Changle–Linqu area was metasomatized by oceanic crust-derived melts, which transfer the supracrustal Ar isotope signatures to the mantle sources. The low4He abundance and low3He/4He ratios of clinopyroxene in the lherzolites and wehrlites are ascribed to metasomatism by crustal melts from the subducted Pacific plate.Fei Su Yan Xiao Huaiyu He Benxun Su Ying Wang Rixiang Zhu 2014Chinese Science Bulletin2014,59,4:6
