The land use and land cover change database and its relative studies in China显示文摘In the mid-1990s, we established the national operative dynamic information serving systems on natural resources and environment. During building the land-use/land-cover change (LUCC)database for the mid-1990s, 520 scenes of remotely sensed images of Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM) were interpreted into land-use/land-cover categories at scale of 1:100,000 under overall digital software environment after being geo-referenced and ortho-rectified. The vector map of land-use/land-cover in China at the scale of 1:100,000 was recently converted into a 1-km raster database that captures all ofthe high-resolution land-use information by calculating area percentage for each kind of land use category within every cell. Being designed as an operative dynamic information serving system, monitoring the change in land-use/land-cover at national level was executed. We have completed the updating of LUCC database by comparing the TM data in the mid-1990s with new data sources received during 1999-2000 and 1989-1990. The LUCC database has supported greatly the national LUCC research program in China and some relative studies are incompletely reviewed in this paper.LIU Jiyuan, LIU Mingliang, DENG Xiangzheng, ZhuangDafang,ZHANG Zengxiang, LUO Di(1. 2Spatial patterns and driving forces of land use change in China during the early 21st century显示文摘Land use and land cover change as the core of coupled human-environment systems has become a potential field of land change science (LCS) in the study of global environmental change. Based on remotely sensed data of land use change with a spatial resolution of 1 km × 1 km on national scale among every 5 years, this paper designed a new dynamic regionalization according to the comprehensive characteristics of land use change including regional differentiation, physical, economic, and macro-policy factors as well. Spatial pattern of land use change and its driving forces were investigated in China in the early 21st century. To sum up, land use change pattern of this period was characterized by rapid changes in the whole country. Over the agricultural zones, e.g., Huang-Huai-Hai Plain, the southeast coastal areas and Sichuan Basin, a great proportion of fine arable land were engrossed owing to considerable expansion of the built-up and residential areas, resulting in decrease of paddy land area in southern China. The development of oasis agriculture in Northwest China and the reclamation in Northeast China led to a slight increase in arable land area in northern China. Due to the 'Grain for Green' policy, forest area was significantly increased in the middle and western developing regions, where the vegetation coverage was substantially enlarged, likewise. This paper argued the main driving forces as the implementation of the strategy on land use and regional development, such as policies of 'Western Development', 'Revitalization of Northeast', coupled with rapidly economic development during this period.LIU Jiyuan ZHANG Zengxiang XU Xinliang KUANG Wenhui ZHOU Wancun ZHANG Shuwen LI Rendong YAN Changzhen YU Dongsheng WU Shixin JIANG Nan 2010Journal of Geographical Sciences2010,20,4:154

Spatiotemporal dynamics of impervious surface areas across China during the early 21st century显示文摘China has experienced an unprecedented urbanization and industrialization in the past decades. In this research, we examined the dynamics of construction lands and impervious surface areas (ISA) based on land use/cover change and ISA datasets between 2000 and 2008, which were provided by the national resources and environmental remote sensing information platform. The results indicated that the construction areas and ISA increased by 3468.30 and 2212.24 km 2 /a in this period primarily due to the implementation of national macro-development strategies and fast-growing economy. In 2008, ISA accounted for 0.86% of the total land area in China. Urban land areas increased by 43.46% between 2000 and 2008. The annual growth rate of 1788.22 km 2 /a in this period was 2.18 times that in the 1990s. In particular, urban ISA increased by 53.30% between 2000 and 2008 with an annual growth rate of 1348.85 km 2 /a. During the 8 years, the ISA in China increased rapidly, especially in the Beijing-Tianjin-Tangshan Metropolitan Region, Pearl River Delta, Yangtze River Delta, and the western China region. The increasing ISA may influence potentially water environmental quality in the major basins. In particular, the number of subbasins having ISA of greater than 10% increased considerably, which were primarily distributed in the Haihe River, Yangtze River and Pearl River basins. In 2008, 14.42% of the basin areas were affected by the increased ISA.KUANG WenHui LIU JiYuan ZHANG ZengXiang LU DengSheng XIANG Bao 2013Chinese Science Bulletin2013,58,14:59

Urban expansion in China and its effect on cultivated land before and after initiating'Reform and Open Policy'显示文摘Urbanization in China has expanded at an unprecedented speed since the declaration of 'Reform and Open Policy'and presented many challenges. Unbalanced regional development, appearance of super megacities and concomitant problems, and conflicts between urbanization and cultivated land protection are three critical problems that Chinese urbanization has to face. To develop new plans for foreseeable future urbanization in China, it is critical to understand the evolving history of cities across China. This study maps urban expansion of 60 typical Chinese cities based on large amount of remote sensing data and the labor-intensive image interpretation method, in order to understand the history of urban expansion from the 1970 s to 2013.Results showed that area of cities expanded 5.23 times compared to their area in the 1970 s. Urban expansion in China accelerated three times(1988–1996, 1999–2006, and 2009–2011) and decelerated three times(1997–1998, 2007–2008, and 2012–2013) over the 40 years. The urban area of South China expanded most significantly 9.42 times, while the urban area in Northeast China expanded only 2.37 times. The disparity among different administrative ranks of cities was even greater than(3.81 times) the differences among different regions. Super megacities have been continuously expanding at a fast rate(8.60-fold), and have not shown obvious signs of slowing down. The proportion of cultivated land among the land sources for urban expansion decreased to a small extent in the 1990 s, but cultivated land continues to be the major land source for urban expansion. Effective future urbanization needs controlling the expansion scale of large cities and reasonably developing medium and small cities, as well as balancing regional development.ZHANG ZengXiang WEN QingKe LIU Fang ZHAO XiaoLi LIU Bin XU JinYong YI Ling HU ShunGuang WANG Xiao ZUO LiJun LI Na LI MinMin SHI LiFeng ZENG Tian JU HongRun 2016Science China Earth Sciences2016,59,10:12
Spatial and temporal variations of coastlines in northern China (2000-2012)显示文摘This study examined the spatial distribution of the continent coastline in northern China using remote sensing and GIS techniques, and calculated the fractal dimension of the coastline by box-counting method, with a time span from 2000 to 2012.Moreover,we analyzed the characteristics of spatial-temporal changes in the coastline's length and fractal dimension, the relationship between the length change and fractal dimension change, and the driving forces of coastline changes in northern China.During the research period, the coastline of the study area increased by 637.95 km,at a rate of 53.16 km per year.On the regional level, the most significant change in coastline length was observed in Tianjin and Hebei.Temporally, the northern China coastline grew faster after 2008.The most dramatic growth was found between 2010 and 2011,with an increasing rate of 2.49% per year. The fractal dimension of the coastline in northern China was increasing during the research period, and the most dramatic increase occurred in Bohai Rim.There is a strong-positive linear relationship between the historical coastline length and fractal dimension(the correlation coefficient was 0.9962).Through statistical analysis of a large number of local coastline changes,it can be found that the increase(or decrease) of local coastline length will,in most cases, lead to the increase(or decrease) of the whole coastline fractal dimension.Civil-coastal engineering construction was the most important factor driving the coastline change in northern China.Port construction, fisheries facilities and salt factories were the top three construction activities.Compared to human activities, the influence of natural processes such as estuarine deposit and erosion were relatively small.XU Jinyong ZHANG Zengxiang ZHAO Xiaoli WEN Qingke ZUO Lijun WANG Xiao YI Ling 2014Journal of Geographical Sciences2014,24,1:10
Spatial Differences of Coastal Urban Expansion in China from 1970s to 2013显示文摘As the ′economic engines′ of China, coastal cities have developed and expanded considerably since the 1970 s.In this study, information on the urban expansion process of Chinese coastal cities from the 1970 s to 2013 was retrieved.Through the analysis of stage characteristics, spatial expansion modes, influences on land use, centroid shifts, and spatial morphological evolutions, the spatial differences of coastal urban expansion were revealed. Results indicate that 1) the expansion stages of southern coastal cities are more complex than those of northern coastal cities, and the expansion ranges and speeds of the former are far higher than those of the latter;2) the spatial expansion of southern coastal cities mostly adopt a single mode, whereas northern coastal cities mostly adopt a mixed mode;3) significant spatial differences in the occupations of different land sources exist between the south and the north along the coastline;4) the centroid of coastal cities tends to migrate toward the coastline, and the centroid shift distances of southern coastal cities are clearly higher than those of northern coastal cities;and 5) the spatial morphology of southern coastal cities tends to be compact, whereas that of northern coastal cities tends to be loose.Policies have a powerful significance in terms of guiding urban expansion and its spatial differences in coastal cities.Urban expansion in coastal cities will encounter new opportunities and challenges under the guidance of new types of urbanization strategies.SHI Lifeng LIU Fang ZHANG Zengxiang ZHAO Xiaoli LIU Bin XU Jinyong WEN Qingke YI Ling HU Shunguang 2015Chinese Geographical Science2015,25,4:7
Urban Expansion in China Based on Remote Sensing Technology:A Review显示文摘Urban areas and its evolution are important anthropogenic indicators and human ecological footprints, and play decisive roles in environmental change analysis, global geo-conditional monitoring, and sustainable development. China has the highest rate of urban expansion and has emerged as an urban expansion hotspot worldwide. In this paper, the progress of studies on Chinese urban expansion based on remote sensing technology are summarized and analyzed from the aspects of urban area definition, remotely sensed imagery applied in urban expansion, monitoring methods of urban expansion, and urban expansion applications. Existing issues and future directions of Chinese urban expansion are discussed and proposed. Results indicate that: 1) The fusion of multi-source remotely sensed imagery is imperative to meet the needs of urban expansion with various monitoring terms and frequencies on different scales and dimensions. 2) To guarantee the classification accuracy and efficiency and describe urban expansion and its influences on local land use simultaneously, the combination of visual interpretation and automatic classification is the tendency of future monitoring methods of urban areas. 3) Urban expansion data have become the prerequisite for recognizing the urban development process, excavating its driving forces, simulating and predicting the future development directions, and also is conducive to revealing and explaining urban ecological and environmental issues. 4) In the past decades, Chinese scholars have promoted the application of remote sensing technology in the urban expansion field, with data construction, methods and models developing from the quotation stage to improvement and innovation stage; however, an independent and consistent urban expansion data on the national scale with long-term and high-frequency(such as annual monitoring) monitoring is still lacking.ZHANG Zengxiang LIU Fang ZHAO Xiaoli WANG Xiao SHI Lifeng XU Jinyong YU Sisi WEN Qingke ZUO Lijun YI Ling HU Shunguang LIU Bin 2018Chinese Geographical Science2018,28,5:6
Extraction of Basic Trends of Urban Expansion in China over Past 40 Years from Satellite Images显示文摘If urban sprawl is to be avoided in China in the next ten years, it is not only crucial to understand the overall history, current status, and future trends of urban expansion there, but also these differences, and this is presently lacking. In this study, remotely sensed images with approximately 30 m spatial resolution were used to quantitatively assess the spatial and temporal patterns of urban expansion of 60 Chinese cities(1973–2013). Urban-expansion-process curves of the cities studied were drawn using annual expansion area as an indicator. Curve similarity analysis generated four basic process modes of urban expansion in China. These included cities that: 1) peaked around 2004 and then decelerated; 2) peaked around 2010 and then decelerated; 3) showed sustained acceleration, and 4) showed continued deceleration. Four basic process modes represented cities under different levels of development stage. Geographic location was found to be the most related characteristic to urban expansion process. Regional development policies at the national level in each region also showed highly temporal consistency with fluctuation characteristics of urban expansion process. Urban characteristic such as population size and administrative level were not found to be significantly related to urban expansion-process modes. Understanding the basic process-mode categories well is extremely important for future regional-balance planning and development of macroeconomic policies.WEN Qingke ZHANG Zengxiang SHI Lifeng ZHAO Xiaoli LIU Fang XU Jinyong YI Ling LIU Bin WANG Xiao ZUO Lijun HU Shunguang LI Na LI Minmin 2016Chinese Geographical Science2016,26,2:4
City Size Distribution and Its Spatiotemporal Evolution in China显示文摘Based on the National Land Use/Cover Database of China(NLUD-C) in the end of the 1980s(the 1980s,hereafter), 1995, 2000, 2005, and 2010, 665 cities were selected to study the size distribution and its changes of urban lands in China. In this study, the spatiotemporal evolutions of urban land size distribution as well as the influence of administrative-level on these cities were explored by combining urban spatial positions and administrative-levels. Results indicate that: 1) City size distribution using urban lands was more practical and reasonable than using non-agricultural population. 2) In the 1980s, cities with ascending urban land rank were centralized in Eastern China, specially the Changjiang(Yangtze) River Delta, the Zhujiang(Pearl) River Delta, and Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. Cities in Central, Western, and Northeast China mainly indicated descending urban land rank. 3) The transfer of national development focus resulted in cities with ascending urban land rank becoming evenly distributed nationwide; however, this trend was slightly centralized around Chengdu, Chongqing, and Wuhan in different periods. 4) During the 1980s to 2010, the proportion of cities with ascending urban land rank in provincial capitals, municipalities, and special administrative regions(high-level cities, hereafter) was consistently higher than those in prefecture- and county-level cities except for 2005–2010. The ranks of the majority of the prefecture- and county-level cities were mainly descending, supported by ascending; the proportion of cities with unchanged rank is small. This study breaks through the bottleneck of traditional research in the area of city size distribution by examining urban land replacing the non-agricultural population. The current study also provides scientific explanation for the healthy and reasonable development of urban land as well as the coordinated development of population urbanization and land urbanization.SHI Lifeng ZHANG Zengxiang LIU Fang ZHAO Xiaoli WANG Xiao LIU Bin HU Shunguang WEN Qingke ZUO Lijun YI Ling XU Jinyong 2016Chinese Geographical Science2016,26,6:4
Urban Expansion of China from the 1970s to 2020 Based on Remote Sensing Technology显示文摘Based on Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographical Information System (GIS) technology, urban expansion of 75 cities in China from the 1970s to 2020 was reconstructed by visual-interpretation method, which described the growing process of urban lands and its influences on local land use structures synchronously.By employing annual expansion area per city and urban expansion density,spatial-temporal characteristics and macro patterns of urban expansion were analyzed from the aspects of regional-distributions,administrative-levels and population-sizes comprehensively. Results indicate that:1) urban expansion in China was universal, distinct, persistent, periodic and fluctuating. In the past five decades, urban lands of 75 monitored cities in China expanded dramatically from 3606.26 km2 to 30 521.13 km2.2) Though urban expansion presented significant differences from the aspects of regional distribution, administrative levels, and population sizes,it exhibited a deceleration trend in the 13th Five-Year Plan among all kinds of cities.3) Cultivated lands were the first land resource for urban expansion, and 55.17% of newly-expanded urban lands appeared by encroaching this land use type.China’s urban expansion has caused sustained pressure on cultivated land protection, especially in super megacities, and the contradiction between urban expansion and cultivated land protection will always exist.4) The compactness of urban lands in China increased before 1987 and reduced in the next three decades, which was consistent with the implementation of major policies and the deployment of national strategies, and is expected to become compact with a stopping declining or even rebounding after the 13th Five-Year Plan.LIU Fang ZHANG Zengxiang ZHAO Xiaoli LIU Bin WANG Xiao YI Ling ZUO Lijun XU Jinyong HU Shunguang SUN Feifei WANG Yafei 2021Chinese Geographical Science2021,31,5:2

Current Advances in Epigenetic Modification and Alteration during Mammalian Ovarian Folliculogenesis显示文摘During the growth and development of mammalian ovarian follicles, the activation and deactivation of mass genes are under the synergistic control of diverse modifiers through genetic and epigenetic events. Many factors regulate gene activity and functions through epigenetic modification without altering the DNA sequence, and the common mechanisms may include but are not limited to: DNA methylation, histone modifications (e.g., acetylation, deacetylation, phosphorylation, methylation, and ubiquitination), and RNA- associated silencing of gene expression by noncoding RNA. Over the past decade, substantial progress has been achieved in studies involving the epigenetic alterations during mammalian germ cell development. A number of candidate regulatory factors have been identified. This review focuses on the current available information of epigenetic alterations (e.g., DNA methylation, histone modification, noncoding-RNA-mediated regulation) during mammalian folliculogenesis and recounts when and how epigenetic patterns are differen- tially established, maintained, or altered in this process. Based on different types of epigenetic regulation, our review follows the temporal progression of events during ovarian folliculogenesis and describes the epigenetic changes and their contributions to germ cellespecific functions at each stage (i.e., primordial folliculogenesis (follicle formation), follicle maturation, and follicular atresia).Zengxiang Pan Jinbi Zhang Qifa Li Yinxia Li Fangxiong Shi Zhuang Xie Honglin Liu 2012Journal of Genetics and Genomics2012,39,3:2
NORHA,a novel follicular atresia-related lncRNA,promotes porcine granulosa cell apoptosis via the miR-183-96-182 cluster and FoxO1 axis显示文摘Background:Follicular atresia has been shown to be strongly associated with a low follicle utilization rate and female infertility, which are regulated by many factors such as microRNAs(miRNAs),which constitute a class of noncoding RNAs(ncRNAs).However, little is known about long noncoding RNAs(lncRNAs),which constitute another ncRNA family that regulate follicular atresia. Results:A total of 77 differentially expressed lncRNAs,including 67 upregulated and 10 downregulated lncRNAs,were identified in early atretic follicles compared to healthy follicles by RNA-Sequencing.We characterized a noncoding RNA that was highly expressed in atretic follicles(NORHA).As an intergenic lncRNA,NORHA was one of the upregulated lncRNAs identified in the atretic follicles. To determine NORHA function,RT-PCR,flow cytometry and western blotting were performed, and the results showed that NORHA was involved in follicular atresia by influencing GC apoptosis with or without oxidative stress. To determine the mechanism of action, bioinformatics analysis, luciferase reporter assay and RNA immunoprecipitation assay were performed, and the results showed that NORHA acted as a‘sponge’,that directly bound to the miR-183-96-182 cluster, and thus prevented its targeted inhibition of FoxO1,a major sensor and effector of oxidative stress. Conclusions:We provide a comprehensive perspective of lncRNA regulation of follicular atresia, and demonstrate that NORHA,a novel lncRNA related to follicular atresia, induces GC apoptosis by influencing the activities of the miR-183-96-182 cluster and FoxO1 axis.Wang Yao Zengxiang Pan Xing Du Jinbi Zhang Honglin Liu Qifa Li 2022Journal of Animal Science and Biotechnology2022,13,2:2

Urbanization in China from the end of 1980s until 2010 – spatial dynamics and patterns of growth using EO-data显示文摘Urbanization in China has been experiencing a remarkable dynamism in the past 40 years. The most evident implication of urbanization is the physical growth of cities. We analyze urban land growth rates and changes in spatial urban forms from the end of the 1980s to 2010 based on the authoritative National Land Use/Cover Database of China. We present new spatial measures that describe‘urban land growth types’and‘fluctuations in urban land growth’within the monitoring time span with a temporal interval of five-year steps. We evaluate the correlations between urban land growth rates and socioeconomic data. Results show that(1)distinct characteristics exist on the spatiotemporal evolutions of urban land growth rates in terms of area and perimeter,e.g.coastal areas exhibit the most dramatic growth rates;(2)the spatial distribution characteristics of‘urban land growth types’and‘fluctuations in urban land growth’follow similar spatial patterns across China,e.g.significant differences exist between the eastern region and other regions;and(3)a moderate correlation exists between urban area growth rate and urban population growth rate at an R2 of 0.37.By contrast,we determine no significant correlation between urban area growth rate and tertiary industry value growth rate.Lifeng Shia Hannes Taubenböck Zengxiang Zhang Fang Liu Michael Wurm 2019International Journal of Digital Earth2019,12,1:1

Assessing 40 years of spatial dynamics and patterns in megacities along the Belt and Road region using satellite imagery显示文摘The Belt and Road(B&R)region,a vital area with historical, economic, cultural and political significance, has undergone rapid urbanization in the past several decades, especially in the form of urban expansion. In this study,20 megacities in the B&R region were selected to explore different spatiotemporal patterns of urban expansion.Object-oriented support vector machines(SVM),annual growth rate(AGR)models, and landscape metrics were employed to delineate the urban areas and characterize spatiotemporal characteristics and landscape patterns of these megacities during 1975–2015.All urban maps presented high overall accuracies(80.70%–95.90%)and overall Kappa coefficients(0.76–0.95).The study revealed that megacities in the B&R region have undergone different types of urban sprawl, mainly adopting a‘concentric circle’pattern in inland areas and a‘sector’pattern in coastal areas.Besides, six expansion modes were summarized according to the AGRs of individual megacities.Differences existed in megacities of the developing and developed countries and among five sub-regions.Moreover,‘dispersion,gathering,and re-dispersion’and‘coalescence’were two major landscape patterns of megacities in developing and developed countries. Results of this study can provide a scientific reference for urban planning and aid in sustainable development of local areas.Zhongchang Sun Sisi Yu Huadong Guo Cuizhen Wang ZengXiang Zhang Ru Xu 2021International Journal of Digital Earth2021,14,1:1
