1Assessing the effects of surface-bound humic acid on the phototoxicity of anatase and rutile TiO_2 nanoparticles in vitro显示文摘In this study,the cytotoxicity of two different crystal phases of TiO_2 nanoparticles,with surface modification by humic acid(HA),to Escherichia coli,was assessed.The physicochemical properties of TiO_2 nanoparticles were thoroughly characterized.Three different initial concentrations,namely 50,100,and 200 ppm,of HA were used for synthesis of HA coated TiO_2 nanoparticles(denoted as A/RHA50,A/RHA100,and A/RHA200,respectively).Results indicate that rutile(LC50(concentration that causes 50%mortality compared the control group)=6.5)was more toxic than anatase(LC_50=278.8)under simulated sunlight(SSL)irradiation,possibly due to an extremely narrow band gap.It is noted that HA coating increased the toxicity of anatase,but decreased that of rutile.Additionally,AHA50 and RHA50had the biggest differences compared to uncoated anatase and rutile with LC_50of 201.9 and21.6,respectively.We then investigated the formation of reactive oxygen species(ROS)by TiO_2 nanoparticles in terms of hydroxyl radicals(OH)and superoxide anions(O_2^-).Data suggested that O_2^- was the main ROS that accounted for the higher toxicity of rutile upon SSL irradiation.We also observed that HA coating decreased the generation of OH and O_2^- on rutile,but increased O_2^- formation on anatase.Results from TEM analysis also indicated that HA coated rutile tended to be attached to the surface of E.coli more than anatase.Xiaojia He Sabrieon Sanders Winfred G.Aker Yunfeng Lin Jessica Douglas Huey-min Hwang 2016Journal of Environmental Sciences2016,28,4:6
2Assessing the effect of different natural dissolved organic matters on the cytotoxicity of titanium dioxide nanoparticles with bacteria显示文摘Titanium dioxide nanoparticles(TiO_2 NPs) are among the most widely manufactured nanomaterials on a global scale. However, prudent and vigilant surveillance, incumbent upon the scientific community with the advent of new technologies, has revealed potentially undesirable effects of TiO_2 NPs on biological systems and the natural environment during their application and discharge. Such effects are likely best evaluated by first assessing the fate of the TiO_2 NPs in natural environments. In this study, the effects of terrestrial humic acid(HA) and tannic acid(TA), two major members of the collective:dissolved organic matter(DOM), on the cytotoxicity of TiO_2 NPs to Escherichia coli were investigated in the presence and absence of natural sunlight. Qualitative(transmission electron microscopy(TEM)) and quantitative(LC50) analyses were employed in this study. In addition, the production of reactive oxygen species(ROS) in the form of UOH was further assessed—as HA or TA increased the production of ROS decreased. The inhibition of bacterial viability in the light treatment groups, with respective treatment organics at concentrations of 10 ppm, was less in TA than in terrestrial HA. 18Assessment of trace metals in droppings of Adélie penguins(Pygoscelis adeliae) from different locations of the Antarctic Peninsula area显示文摘In recent decades, polar regions of the planet have witnessed an increase in human presence. Antarctica is considered one of the most pristine regions of the world, but it could be affected by pollution owing to anthropogenic activities, particularly in the Antarctic Peninsula. Human presence can increase the levels of some trace metals in Antarctic environments, an issue that needs to be evaluated. To acquire data of trace metal contamination in the Antarctic Peninsula region, concentrations(dry weight) of Cd, Pb, As, Cu, Hg and Zn in fresh excrement of Adélie penguins were determined by atomic absorption spectrophotometry. During the 2012/2013 austral summer, samples were collected from four important nesting sites on the Antarctic Peninsula: Arctowski Base, Kopaitic Island(both sites in the northern Antarctic Peninsula), Yalour Island and Avian Island(both sites in the southern Antarctic Peninsula). Data showed that Adélie penguin excreta had significantly higher levels(mg·kg-1) of As, Cd, Hg, Pb and Cu at Arctowski Base and Kopaitic Island, both sites that have major anthropogenic activities that probably contributed to increased metal levels. The levels of trace metals in Adélie penguins were similar to those reported in excreta of Antarctic species in previous studies, and lower than those in excreta of other Antarctic animals. 19A Systemic Functional Semiotic Investigation of Illustrations in Chinese Poem Books:An Ontogenetic Perspective显示文摘While images have been sufficiently investigated from the systemic functional semiotic approach in various multimodal text types,illustrations in poem books have received relatively little attention.This paper analyzed 2233 images in 15 poem picture-books(IPBs)targeted at different age groups,and classified as pre-school,school and adult groups.Statistics herein show that visual meanings in different groups manifest significantly different patterns in terms of ideational,interpersonal and compositional functions.The distributions are clearly motivated by different pedagogical functions,moving from basic cognitive development,to literacy cultivation and affiliation,and finally to enculturation of aesthetics and social values.The study therefore informs IPB practitioners how to match the visual design of illustrations with the pedagogical needs of readers of different ages.Zenan Zhong Shukun Chen Winfred Wenhui Xuan 2021Language and Semiotic Studies2021,7,4:0
