1Physical characteristics of Chinese Hakka显示文摘Using standard and internationally validated methods,86 anthropologic characteristics were determined in 650 male(305 from urban areas and 345 from rural areas) and 704 female(331 from urban areas,373 from rural areas) Chinese Hakka adults living in Guangdong and Jiangxi.The data were used to calculate 24 anthropologic indices,which were analyzed statistically.The physical characteristics of Hakka subjects were analyzed and compared with reference ethnic data.There were four main findings of this study.First,a small proportion of Hakka adults had an eye fold on the upper eyelid,but a large proportion had a mongoloid fold.The eye slits were narrow in most adults,had a medium nasal root height and straight bridges,and most of the external angles were prominent.The nasal base was upturned in most men.The distributions of the three types of nasal base in women were similar.The proportions of subjects with middle and high alae nasi heights were high and similar.Males with a maximum nostril diameter were mostly classified as transverse and oblique,while many women were classified as transverse and had relatively wide alae nasi.The round lobe type was the most common.Upper lip skin height was mostly classified as medium.Lips were classified as thin.The hair was black,eyes were brown,and the skin was yellowish.Second,the head length was long in male Hakka.The minimum frontal breadth,face breadth,lip height,and interocular breadth were similar to those of North-Asian populations.Meanwhile,head breadth,morphological facial height,nose breadth,mouth breadth,and nose height were similar to those of South-Asian populations.Head length was long in female Hakka.The minimum frontal breadth,face breadth,lip height,and interocular breadth were similar to those of North-Asian populations.Head breadth,nose breadth,and mouth breadth were similar to those of South-Asian populations.Third,the stature of male and female Hakka in urban and rural areas was classified as medium.The proportions of male and female Hakka classified as mesocephaly(length-breadth index of the head),hypsicephalic type,metriocephalic type(breadth-height index of the head) mesorrhiny,long trunk,subbrachyskelic type,broad shoulder breadth,and narrow distance between iliac crests were higher than those of other types.Finally,principal component analyses showed that the physical characteristics of Hakka were between those of South-Asian and North-Asian ethnic populations,but were generally closer to those of North-Asian populations in China.ZHENG LianBin LI YongLan LU ShunHua BAO JinPing WANG Yang ZHANG XiaoRui XUE Hong RONG WenGuo 2013Science China(Life Sciences)2013,56,6:13
2Biomimetic injectable hydrogel microspheres with enhanced lubrication and controllable drug release for the treatment of osteoarthritis显示文摘The occurrence of osteoarthritis(OA)is highly associated with the reduced lubrication property of the joint,where a progressive and irreversible damage of the articular cartilage and consecutive inflammatory response dominate the mechanism.In this study,bioinspired by the super-lubrication property of cartilage and catecholamine chemistry of mussel,we successfully developed injectable hydrogel microspheres with enhanced lubrication and controllable drug release for OA treatment.Particularly,the lubricating microspheres(GelMA@DMA-MPC)were fabricated by dip coating a self-adhesive polymer(DMA-MPC,synthesized by free radical copolymerization)on superficial surface of photo-crosslinked methacrylate gelatin hydrogel microspheres(GelMA,prepared via microfluidic technology),and encapsulated with an anti-inflammatory drug of diclofenac sodium(DS)to achieve the dual-functional performance.The tribological test and drug release test showed the enhanced lubrication and sustained drug release of the GelMA@DMA-MPC microspheres.In addition,the functionalized microspheres were intra-articularly injected into the rat knee joint with an OA model,and the biological tests including qRT-PCR,immunofluorescence staining assay,X-ray radiography and histological staining assay all revealed that the biocompatible microspheres provided significant therapeutic effect against the development of OA.In summary,the injectable hydrogel microspheres developed herein greatly improved lubrication and achieved sustained local drug release,therefore representing a facile and promising technique for the treatment of OA.Ying Han Jielai Yang Weiwei Zhao Haimang Wang Yulong Sun Yuji Chen Jing Luo Lianfu Deng Xiangyang Xu Wenguo Cui Hongyu Zhang 2021Bioactive Materials2021,6,10:8
3Sensitivity-enhanced surface plasmon resonance sensor utilizing a tungsten disulfide (WS_2) nanosheets overlayer显示文摘Tungsten disulfide(WS_2), as a representative layered transition metal dichalcogenide(TMDC) material, possesses important potential for applications in highly sensitive sensors. Here, a sensitivity-enhanced surface plasmon resonance(SPR) sensor with a metal film modified by an overlayer of WS_2 nanosheets is proposed and demonstrated. The SPR sensitivity is related to the thickness of the WS_2 overlayer, which can be tailored by coating a WS_2 ethanol suspension with different concentrations or by the number of times of repeated post-coating.Benefitting from its large surface area, high refractive index, and unique optoelectronic properties, the WS_2 nanosheet overlayer coated on the gold film significantly improves the sensing sensitivity. The highest sensitivity(up to 2459.3 nm∕RIU) in the experiment is achieved by coating the WS_2 suspension once. Compared to the case without a WS_2 overlayer, this result shows a sensitivity enhancement of 26.6%. The influence of the WS_2 nanosheet overlayer on the sensing performance improvement is analyzed and discussed. Moreover, the proposed WS_2 SPR sensor has a linear correlation coefficient of 99.76% in refractive index range of 1.333 to 1.360. 4Functional Electrospun Fibers for Local Therapy of Cancer显示文摘Despite great efforts and advancement in the treatment of cancer,tumor recurrence and metastasis remain significant challenges and demand novel therapy strategies.Recently,advances in biomaterials and drug delivery systems have facilitated the development of the local therapy of cancer,among which electrospun nanofibrous scaffolds show great promise owing to their porous structure,relatively large surface area,high drug loading capacity,similarity with the native extracellular matrix,and possibility of the combination of various therapies.Here,we review this rapidly developing field of electrospun nanofibrous scaffolds as a drug delivery system for cancer local therapy,in particular addressing stimuli-responsive drug release,as well as its combination with stem cell and immune therapy.Challenges and future perspectives are also discussed.Jingwen Zhao Wenguo Cui 2020Advanced Fiber Materials2020,2,5:7
5Tim-3 promotes cell aggressiveness and paclitaxel resistance through NF-κB/STAT3 signalling pathway in breast cancer cells显示文摘Objective:Although T-cell immunoglobulin and mucin-domain containing molecule-3(Tim-3)has been recognized as a promising target for cancer immunotherapy,its exact role in breast cancer has not been fully elucidated.Methods:Tim-3 gene expression in breast cancer and its prognostic significance were analyzed.Associated mechanisms were then explored in vitro by establishing Tim-3-overexpressing breast cancer cells.Results:In a pooled analysis of The Cancer Genome Atlas(TCGA)database,Tim-3 gene expression levels were significantly higher(P<0.001)in breast cancer tissue,compared with normal tissues.Tim-3 was a prognosis indicator in breast cancer patients[relapse-free survival(RFS),P=0.004;overall survival(OS),P=0.099].Tim-3 overexpression in Tim-3 low breast cancer cells promoted aggressiveness of breast cancer cells,as evidenced by enhanced proliferation,migration,invasion,tight junction deterioration and tumor-associated tubal formation.Tim-3 also enhanced cellular resistance to paclitaxel.Furthermore,Tim-3 exerted its function by activating the NF-κB/STAT3 signalling pathway and by regulating gene expression[cyclin D1(CCND1),C-Myc,matrix metalloproteinase-1(MMP1),TWIST,vascular endothelial growth factor(VEGF)upregulation,concomitant with Ecadherin downregulation).Lastly,Tim-3 downregulated tight junction-associated molecules zona occludens(ZO)-2,ZO-1 and occludin,which may further facilitate tumor progression.Conclusions:Tim-3 plays an oncogenic role in breast cancer and may represent a potential target for antitumor therapy.Yizi Cong Yuxin Cui Shiguang Zhu Jianqiao Cao Haidong Zou Tracey AMartin Guangdong Qiao Wenguo Jiang Zhigang Yu 2020Chinese Journal of Cancer Research2020,32,5:7
6Hydration-Enhanced Lubricating Electrospun Nanofibrous Membranes Prevent Tissue Adhesion显示文摘Lubrication is the key to efficient function of human tissues and has significant impact on the comfort level.However,the construction of a lubricating nanofibrous membrane has not been reported as yet,especially using a one-step surface modification method.Here,bioinspired by the superlubrication mechanism of articular cartilage,we successfully construct hydration-enhanced lubricating nanofibers via one-step in situ grafting of a copolymer synthesized by dopamine methacrylamide(DMA)and 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine(MPC)onto electrospun polycaprolactone(PCL)nanofibers.The zwitterionic MPC structure provides the nanofiber surface with hydration lubrication behavior.The coefficient of friction(COF)of the lubricating nanofibrous membrane decreases significantly and is approximately 65%less than that of pure PCL nanofibers,which are easily worn out under friction regardless of hydration.The lubricating nanofibers,however,show favorable wear-resistance performance.Besides,they possess a strong antiadhesion ability of fibroblasts compared with pure PCL nanofibers.The cell density decreases approximately 9-fold,and the cell area decreases approximately 12 times on day 7.Furthermore,the in vivo antitendon adhesion data reveals that the lubricating nanofiber group has a significantly lower adhesion score and a better antitissue adhesion.Altogether,our developed hydration-enhanced lubricating nanofibers show promising applications in the biomedical field such as antiadhesive membranes.Liang Cheng Yi Wang Guoming Sun Shizhu Wen Lianfu Deng Hongyu Zhang Wenguo Cui 2020Research2020,,1:6
7Zea mays(L.) P1 locus for cob glume color identified as a post-domestication selection target with an effect on temperate maize genomes显示文摘Artificial selection during domestication and post-domestication improvement results in loss of genetic diversity near target loci. However, the genetic locus associated with cob glume color and the nature of the genomic pattern surrounding it was elusive and the selection effect in that region was not clear. An association mapping panel consisting of 283 diverse modern temperate maize elite lines was genotyped by a chip containing over 55,000 evenly distributed SNPs. Ten-fold resequencing at the target region on 40 of the panel lines and 47 tropical lines was also undertaken. A genome-wide association study(GWAS) for cob glume color confirmed the P1 locus, which is located on the short arm of chromosome 1, with a-log10 P value for surrounding SNPs higher than the Bonferroni threshold(α/n, α < 0.001) when a mixed linear model(MLM) was implemented. A total of 26 markers were identified in a 0.78 Mb region surrounding the P1 locus, including 0.73 Mb and 0.05 Mb upstream and downstream of the P1 gene, respectively. A clear linkage disequilibrium(LD) block was found and LD decayed very rapidly with increasing physical distance surrounding the P1 locus. The estimates of π and Tajima's D were significantly(P < 0.001) lower at both ends compared to the locus. Upon comparison of temperate and tropical lines at much finer resolution by resequencing(180-fold finer than chip SNPs), a more structured LD block pattern was found among the 40 resequenced temperate lines. All evidence indicates that the P1 locus in temperate maize has not undergone neutral evolution but has been subjected to artificial selection during post-domestication selection or improvement. 8Regulation of the inflammatory cycle by a controllable release hydrogel for eliminating postoperative inflammation after discectomy显示文摘Surgery is the final choice for most patients with intervertebral disc degeneration(IDD).Operation-caused trauma will cause inflammation in the intervertebral disc.Serious inflammation will cause tissue defects and induce tissue degeneration,IDD recurrence and the occurrence of other diseases.Therefore,we proposed a scheme to treat recurrence after discectomy by inhibiting inflammation with an aspirin(ASP)-loaded hydrogel to restore the mechanical stability of the spine and relieve local inflammation.ASP-liposomes(ASP-Lips)were incorporated into a photocrosslinkable gelatin-methacryloyl(GelMA)via mixing.This material can effectively alleviate inflammation by inhibiting the release of high mobility group box 1(HMGB1)from the nucleus to the cytoplasm.We further assessed the expression of inflammatory cytokines,such as interleukin 6(IL-6)and tumor necrosis factor-α(TNF-α),and degeneration-related factors,such as type II collagen(COL-2),Aggrecan,matrix metallopeptidases-3(MMP-3),MMP-13,a disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin motifs-4(ADAMTS-4)and ADAMTS-5 in rat nucleus pulpous cells.The level of IDD was analyzed through H&E,safranin-O staining and immunohistochemistry in rabbit samples.In vitro,we found that ASP-Lip@GelMA treatment significantly decreased inflammatory cytokines,MMP-3 and-13,and ADAMTS-4 and-5 and up-regulated COL-2 and Aggrecan via the inhibited release of HMGB-1 from the nucleus.In vivo,ASP-Lip@GelMA can effectively inhibit inflammation of local tissue after disc surgery and fill local tissue defects.This composite hydrogel system is a promising way to treat the recurrence of IDD after surgery without persistent complications.Yu Liu Jiacheng Du Peng Peng Ruoyu Cheng Jiayi Lin Congxin Xu Huilin Yang Wenguo Cui Haiqing Mao Yuling Li Dechun Geng 2021Bioactive Materials2021,6,1:6

10Shear-responsive boundary-lubricated hydrogels attenuate osteoarthritis显示文摘Lipid-based boundary layers formed on liposome-containing hydrogels can facilitate lubrication.However,these boundary layers can be damaged by shear,resulting in decreased lubrication.Here,a shear-responsive boundary-lubricated drug-loaded hydrogel is created by incorporating celecoxib(CLX)-loaded liposomes within dynamic covalent bond-based hyaluronic acid(HA)hydrogels(CLX@Lipo@HA-gel).The dynamic cross-linked network enables the hydrogel to get restructured in response to shear,and the HA matrix allows the accumulation of internal liposome microreservoirs on the sliding surfaces,which results in the formation of boundary layers to provide stable lubrication.Moreover,hydration shells formed surrounding the hydrogel can retard the degradation process,thus helping in sustaining lubrication.Furthermore,in vitro and in vivo experiments found that CLX@Lipo@HA-gels can maintain anabolic-catabolic balance,alleviate cartilage wear,and attenuate osteoarthritis progression by delivering CLX and shear-responsive boundary lubrication.Overall,CLX@Lipo@HA-gels can serve as shear-responsive boundary lubricants and drug-delivery vehicles to alleviate friction-related diseases like osteoarthritis.Yiting Lei Xingkuan Wang Junyi Liao Jieliang Shen Yuling Li Zhengwei Cai Ning Hu Xiaoji Luo Wenguo Cui Wei Huang 2022Bioactive Materials2022,7,10:4
11Lotus seedpod-inspired internal vascularized 3D printed scaffold for bone tissue repair显示文摘In the field of bone defect repair,3D printed scaffolds have the characteristics of personalized customization and accurate internal structure.However,how to construct a well-structured vascular network quickly and effectively inside the scaffold is essential for bone repair after transplantation.Herein,inspired by the unique biological structure of“lotus seedpod”,hydrogel microspheres encapsulating deferoxamine(DFO)liposomes were prepared through microfluidic technology as“lotus seeds”,and skillfully combined with a three-dimensional(3D)printed bioceramic scaffold with biomimetic“lotus”biological structure which can internally grow blood vessels.In this composite scaffold system,DFO was effectively released by 36%in the first 6 h,which was conducive to promote the growth of blood vessels inside the scaffold quickly.In the following 7 days,the release rate of DFO reached 69%,which was fundamental in the formation of blood vessels inside the scaffold as well as osteogenic differentiation of bone mesenchymal stem cells(BMSCs).It was confirmed that the composite scaffold could significantly promote the human umbilical vein endothelial cells(HUVECs)to form the vascular morphology within 6 h in vitro.In vivo,the composite scaffold increased the expression of vascularization and osteogenic related proteins Hif1-α,CD31,OPN,and OCN in the rat femoral defect model,significantly cutting down the time of bone repair.To sum up,this“lotus seedpod”inspired porous bioceramic 3D printed scaffold with internal vascularization functionality has broad application prospects in the future.Xiaoyu Han Mingjie Sun Bo Chen Qimanguli Saiding Junyue Zhang Hongliang Song Lianfu Deng Peng Wang Weiming Gong Wenguo Cui 2021Bioactive Materials2021,6,6:4

14Orofacial inflammatory pain affects the expression of MT1 and NADPH-d in rat caudal spinal trigeminal nucleus and trigeminal ganglion显示文摘Very little is known about the role of melatonin in the trigeminal system,including the function of melatonin receptor 1.In the present study,adult rats were injected with formaldehyde into the right vibrissae pad to establish a model of orofacial inflammatory pain.The distribution of melatonin receptor 1 and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate diaphorase in the caudal spinal trigeminal nucleus and trigeminal ganglion was determined with immunohistochemistry and histochemistry.The results show that there are significant differences in melatonin receptor 1 expression and nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate diaphorase expression in the trigeminal ganglia and caudal spinal nucleus during the early stage of orofacial inflammatory pain.Our findings suggest that when melatonin receptor 1 expression in the caudal spinal nucleus is significantly reduced,melatonin's regulatory effect on pain is attenuated.Fang Huang Hongwen He Wenguo Fan Yongliang Liu Hongyu Zhou Bin Cheng 2013Neural Regeneration Research2013,8,32:4
15A viral vector expressing hypoxia-inducible factor 1 alpha inhibits hippocampal neuronal apoptosis显示文摘Hypoxia-inducible factor 1(HIF-1) attenuates amyloid-beta protein neurotoxicity and decreases apoptosis induced by oxidative stress or hypoxia in cortical neurons. In this study, we constructed a recombinant adeno-associated virus(rAAV) vector expressing the human HIF-1α gene(rAAV-HIF-1α), and tested the assumption that rAAV-HIF-1α represses hippocampal neuronal apoptosis induced by amyloid-beta protein. Our results confirmed that rAAV-HIF-1α significantly reduces apoptosis induced by amyloid-beta protein in primary cultured hippocampal neurons. Direct intracerebral rAAV-HIF-1α administration also induced robust and prolonged HIF-1α production in rat hippocampus. Single rAAV-HIF-1α administration resulted in decreased apoptosis of hippocampal neurons in an Alzheimer's disease rat model established by intracerebroventricular injection of aggregated amyloid-beta protein(25–35). 17Investigation of Coal Fueled Chemical Looping Combustion Using Fe_3O_4 as Oxygen Carrier:Influence of Variables显示文摘Chemical-looping combustion (CLC) is a novel combustion technique with inherent CO2 separation.Magnetite (Fe3O4) was selected as the oxygen carrier.Shenhua coal (Inner Mongolia,China),straw coke and natural coke were used as fuels for this study.Influences of operation temperatures,coal to Fe3O4 mass ratios,and different kinds of fuels on the reduction characteristics of the oxygen carrier were investigated using an atmosphere thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA).Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to analyse the characteristic of the solid residues.Experimental results shown that the reaction between the coal and the oxygen carrier become strong at a temperature of higher than 800℃.As the operation temperature rises,the reduction conversion rate increases.At the temperatures of 850oС,900℃,and 950℃,the reduction conversion rates were 37.1%,46.5%,and 54.1% respectively.However,SEM images show that at the temperature of higher than 950℃,the iron oxides become melted and sintered.The possible operation temperature should be kept around 900℃.When the mass ratios of coal to Fe3O4 were 5/95,10/90,15/85,and 20/80,the reduction conversion rates were 29.5%,40.8%,46.5%,and 46.6% respectively.With the increase of coal,the conversion rate goes up.But there exist an optimal ratio around 15/85.Comparisons based on different kinds of fuels show that the solid fuel with a higher volatile and a more developed pore structure is conducive to the reduction reactivity of the oxygen carrier.Xiaoyan Sun Wenguo Xiang Sha Wang Wendong Tian Xiang Xu Yanji Xu Yunhan Xiao 2010Journal of Thermal Science2010,19,3:3
18Fullerol-hydrogel microfluidic spheres for in situ redox regulation of stem cell fate and refractory bone healing显示文摘The balance of redox homeostasis is key to stem cell maintenance and differentiation.However,this balance is disrupted by the overproduced reactive oxygen species(ROS)in pathological conditions,which seriously impair the therapeutic efficacy of stem cells.In the present study,highly dispersed fullerol nanocrystals with enhanced bioreactivity were incorporated into hydrogel microspheres using one-step innovative microfluidic technology to construct fullerol-hydrogel microfluidic spheres(FMSs)for in situ regulating the redox homeostasis of stem cells and promoting refractory bone healing.It was demonstrated that FMSs exhibited excellent antioxidant activity to quench both intracellular and extracellular ROS,sparing stem cells from oxidative stress damage.Furthermore,these could effectively promote the osteogenic differentiation of stem cells with the activation of FoxO1 signaling,indicating the intrinsically osteogenic property of FMSs.By injecting the stem cells-laden FMSs into rat calvarial defects,the formation of new bone was remarkably reinforced,which is a positive synergic effect from modulating the ROS microenvironment and enhancing the osteogenesis of stem cells.Collectively,the antioxidative FMSs,as injectable stem cell carriers,hold enormous promise for refractory bone healing,which can also be expanded to deliver a variety of other cells,targeting diseases that require in situ redox regulation.Jielai Yang Jing Liang Yuan Zhu Mu Hu Lianfu Deng Wenguo Cui Xiangyang Xu 2021Bioactive Materials2021,6,12:3

20Continental island from the Upper Silurian (Ludlow) Sino-Korean plate显示文摘Recent field studies on Upper Silurian stratigraphy and paleontology in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region (for short Inner Mongalia) near Bater Obo (=Bateaobao) resulted in the discovery of a small continental island with fossil invertebrates preserved as encrusters (stromatoporoids and corals) attached directly to a rocky shore surface and buried by silty clay mud. The Bater island (named herein) is 610 m ×200 m in size and composed of Ordovician igneous rock (diorite). Limestone strata dating from the Ludlow Epoch (about 420 Ma) surround the island and dip away from the igneous core in a radial pattern. The encrusting fossils occur on the sheltered (south and southeast) side of the island, whereas the north side was exposed to stronger wave activity based on a basal conglomerate unit composed of diorite boulders. This is the first record of an ancient island in China and the first report worldwide of stromatoporoids as members of a rocky-shore community.
