| 1 | OsSPL18 controls grain weight and grain number in rice显示文摘Grain weight and grain number are two important traits directly determining grain yield in rice. To date,a lot of genes related to grain weight and grain number have been identified; however, the regulatory mechanism underlying these genes remains largely unknown. In this study, we studied the biological function of OsSPL18 during grain and panicle development in rice. Knockout (KO) mutants of OsSPL18exhibited reduced grain width and thickness, panicle length and grain number, but increased tiller number. Cytological analysis showed that OsSPL18 regulates the development of spikelet hulls by affecting cell proliferation. qRT-PCR and GUS staining analyses showed that OsSPL18 was highly expressed in developing young panicles and young spikelet hulls, in agreement with its function in regulating grain and panicle development. Transcriptional activation experiments indicated that OsSPL18is a functional transcription factor with activation domains in both the N-terminus and C-terminus, and both activation domains are indispensable for its biological functions. Quantitative expression analysis showed that DEP1, a major grain number regulator, was significantly down-regulated in OsSPL18 KO lines.Both yeast one-hybrid and dual-luciferase (LUC) assays showed that OsSPL18 could bind to the DEP1promoter, suggesting that OsSPL18 regulates panicle development by positively regulating the expression of DEP1. Sequence analysis showed that OsSPL18 contains the OsmiR156k complementary sequence in the third exon; 5?RLM-RACE experiments indicated that OsSPL18 could be cleaved by OsmiR156k. | 2 | Facilely Fabricating Superhydrophobic Resin-based Coatings with Lower Water Freezing Temperature and Ice Adhesion for Anti-icing Application显示文摘This work is focused on the development of a facile strategy to fabricate superhydrophobic coatings,which are characterized with lower water freezing temperature and lower ice adhesion.First,a kind o f polyacrylic acid(PAA)based resin material is synthesized as the coating-matrix.Then the functionally-modified S i02 nanoparticles are added to regulate the surface morphology for obtaining the ideal superhydrophobicity.The as-synthesized resin coatings possess strong bonding strength with metal substrate,and the surface hierarchical morphologies(10 wt% SiO2 nanoparticles)induce the robust superhydrophobicity with a high water contact angle of 152°.Also,the superhydrophobic coatings are endowed with high icephobicity,and the freezing temperature of reference water droplet is reduced to-20.33℃ comparing with that(-13.83℃)on the coatings without additive nanoparticles.Furthermore,the ice adhesion strength on the superhydrophobic coatings is only 250 kPa,exhibiting the great ability of ice repellence. | Weilan Liu Haifeng Chen Yizhou Shen Zhengwei Wu | 2019 | Journal of Bionic Engineering2019,16,5: | 7 |
| 3 | Loss of Gn1a/OsCKX2 confers heavy-panicle rice with excellent lodging resistance显示文摘Significant achievements have been made in breeding programs for the heavy-panicle-type(HPT)rice(Oryza sativa) in Southwest China. The HPT varieties now exhibit excellent lodging resistance,allowing them to overcome the greater pressures caused by heavy panicles. However, the genetic mechanism of this lodging resistance remains elusive. Here, we isolated a major quantitative trait locus, Panicle Neck Diameter 1(PND1), andidentified the causal gene as GRAIN NUMBER 1 A/CYTOKININ OXIDASE 2(Gn1 A/Os CKX2). The null gn1 a allele from rice line R498(gn1 aR498) improved lodging resistance through increasing the culm diameter and promoting crown root development.Loss-of-function of Gn1 a/Os CKX2 led to cytokinin accumulation in the crown root tip and accelerated the development of adventitious roots. Gene pyramiding between the null gn1 aR498 allele with two gain-of-function alleles, STRONG CULM 2(SCM2)and SCM3, further improved lodging resistance.Moreover, Gn1 a/Os CKX2 had minimal influence on overall rice quality. | 4 | Geochronology of recent lake sediments from Longgan Lake,middle reach of the Yangtze River,influenced by disturbance of human activities显示文摘The impacts of human activities in Longgan Lake region on the distribution of 210Pb in lake sediment made it difficult to establish geochronological sequence. However, environmental proxies recorded these human activities and could be used as time marker to check 210Pb dating results. Based on the analysis of 210Pbexc distribution in cores LS-1 and LGL-1, and in combination with the human activities records in grain-size and element concentration, the sedimentation rates in the upper layers of these two cores were determined to be 0.19 and 0.23 cm/a respectively. The MAR (mass accumulation rates) of these two cores demonstrated that natural condition, such as precipitation and runoffs, led to the variation of MAR before human disturbance, and human activities controlled the sedimentary processes afterwards, which obviously reduced the particles influx into the lakes. | 8 | Environmental factors affecting degradation of perfluorooctanoic acid(PFOA) by In2O3 nanoparticles显示文摘Nanophotocatalysts have shown great potential for degrading poly-and perfluorinated substances(PFAS).In light of the fact that most of these catalysts were studied in pure water,this study was designed to elucidate effects from common environmental factors on decomposing and defluorinating perfluorooctanoic acid(PFOA)by In2O3 nanoparticles.Results from this work demonstrated that among the seven parameters,pH,sulfate,chloride,H2O2,In2O3 dose,NOM and O2,the first four had statistically significant negative effects on PFOA degradation.Since PFOA is a strong acid,the best condition leading to the highest PFOA removal was identified for two pH ranges.When pH was between 4 and 8,the optimal condition was:pH=4.2;sulfate=5.00 mg/L;chloride=20.43 mg/L;H2O2=0 mmol/L.Under this condition,PFOA decomposition and defluorination were 55.22 and 23.56%,respectively.When pH was between 2 and 6,the optimal condition was:pH=2;sulfate=5.00 mg/L;chloride=27.31 mg/L;H2O2=0 mmol/L.With this condition,the modeled PFOA decomposition was 97.59%with a defluorination of approximately 100%.These predicted results were all confirmed by experimental data.Thus,In2O3 nanoparticles can be used for degrading PFOA in aqueous solutions.This approach works best when the target contaminated water contains low concentrations of NOM,sulfate and chloride and at a low pH. | Weilan Zhang Harry Efstathiadis Lingyun Li Yanna Liang | 2020 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2020,32,7: | 2 |
| 9 | A natural allele of TAW1 contributes to high grain number and grain yield in rice显示文摘Grain number per panicle (GNP) is a complex trait controlled by quantitative trait loci (QTL),directly determining grain yield in rice.Identifying GNP-associated QTL is desirable for increasing rice yield.A rice chromosome segment substitution line (CSSL),F771,which showed increased panicle length and GNP,was identified in a set of CSSLs derived from a cross between two indica cultivars,R498 (recipient) and WY11327 (donor).Genetic analysis showed that the panicle traits in F771 were semidominant and controlled by multiple QTL.Six QTL were consistently identified by QTL-seq analysis.Among them,the major QTL q PLN10 for panicle length and GNP was localized to a 121-kb interval between markers N802 and N909 on chromosome 10.Based on quantitative real-time PCR and sequence analysis,TAWAWA1(TAW1),a known regulator of rice inflorescence architecture,was identified as the candidate gene for q PLN10.A near-isogenic line,NIL-TAW1,was developed to evaluate its effects.In comparison with the recurrent parent R498,NIL-TAW1 showed increased panicle length (14.0%),number of secondary branches (20.9%) and GNP (22.0%),and the final grain yield per plant of NIL-TAW1 was increased by18.6%.Transgenic experiments showed that an appropriate expression level of TAW1 was necessary for panicle development.Haplotype analysis suggested that the favorable F771-type (Hap 13) of TAW1was introduced from aus accessions and had great potential value in high-yield breeding both in indica and japonica varieties.Our results provide a promising genetic resource for rice grain yield improvement. | Hua Yuan Zhengyan Xu Xueqin Tan Peng Gao Mengya Jin Wencheng Song Shiguang Wang Yunhai Kang Peixiong Liu Bin Tu Yuping Wang Peng Qin Shigui Li Bingtian Ma Weilan Chen | 2021 | The Crop Journal2021,9,5: | 2 |

| 15 | A Fragment Substitution in Promoter of MS92/PTC1 Causes Male Sterility in Rice显示文摘Persistent tapetal cell1(PTC1) plays a curial role in pollen development, and is thought to function as a transcriptional activator in rice. However, the molecular mechanism of PTC1 in regulating pollen development and its cis-elements are not well understood. We identified a novel weak male sterility mutant(ms92) which exhibited expanded tapetum and shrink pollen grains. Map-based cloning and allelic analysis suggested that the male sterility of ms92 was caused by a DNA fragment substitution in the promoter of PTC1. The decreased expression of MS92/PTC1 in ms92 and cis-element analysis indicated that the substituted sequence contained several potential binding cis-element of negative feedback. MS92/PTC1 was specifically expressed in tapetum and microspores at the young microspore stage, and its protein was localized in nucleus. We further found that MS92/PTC1 functions as a transcription activator by recognizing H3K4me3. Transcriptomic analysis revealed that a number of genes involved in tapetum degeneration and pollen wall formation were down-regulated in ms92, which are the potential targets of MS92/PTC1.
