Pancreatic trauma: A concise review显示文摘Traumatic injury to the pancreas is rare and difficult to diagnose. In contrast, traumatic injuries to the liver, spleen and kidney are common and are usually identified with ease by imaging modalities.Pancreatic injuries are usually subtle to identify by different diagnostic imaging modalities, and these injuries are often overlooked in cases with extensive multiorgan trauma. The most evident findings of pancreatic injury are posttraumatic pancreatitis with blood, edema, and soft tissue infiltration of the anterior pararenal space. The alterations of post-traumatic pancreatitis may not be visualized within several hours following trauma as they are time dependent.Delayed diagnoses of traumatic pancreatic injuries are associated with high morbidity and mortality.Imaging plays an important role in diagnosis of pancreatic injuries because early recognition of the disruption of the main pancreatic duct is important. We reviewed our experience with the use of various imaging modalities for diagnosis of blunt pancreatic trauma.Uma Debi Ravinder Kaur Kaushal Kishor Prasad Saroj Kant Sinha Anindita Sinha Kartar Singh 2013World Journal of Gastroenterology2013,19,47:26
Phylogenetic alpha and beta diversity in tropical tree assemblages along regionalscale environmental gradients in northwest South America显示文摘Aims Environmental gradients are drivers of species diversity;however,we know relatively little about the evolutionary processes underlying these relationships.A potentially powerful approach to studying diversity gradients is to quantify the phylogenetic structure within and between assemblages arrayed along broad spatial and environmental gradients. Here,we evaluate the phylogenetic structure of plant assemblages along an environmental gradient with the expectation that the habitat specialization of entire lineages is an important evolutionary pattern influencing the structure of tree communities along environmental gradients. Methods We evaluated the effect of several environmental variables on the phylogenetic structure of plant assemblages in 145 plots distributed in northwestern South America that cover a broad environmental gradient. The phylogenetic alpha diversity was quantified for each plot and the phylogenetic beta diversity between each pair of plots was also quantified. Both the alpha and beta diversity measures were then related to spatial and environmental gradients in the study system.Important Findings We found that gradients in temperature and potential evapotranspiration have a strong relationship with the phylogenetic alpha diversity in our study system, with phylogenetic overdispersion in low temperatures and phylogenetic clustering at higher temperatures.Further, the phylogenetic beta diversity between two plots increases with an increasing difference in temperature, whereas annual precipitation was not a significant predictor of community phylogenetic turnover. We also found that the phylogenetic structure of the plots in our study system was related to the degree of seasonal flooding and seasonality in precipitation. In particular, more stressful environments such as dry forests and flooded forests showed phylogenetic clustering. Finally,in contrast with previous studies,we find that phylogenetic beta diversity was not strongly related to the spatial distance separating two forest plots, which may be the result of the importance of the three independent mountain ranges in our study system, which generate a high degree of environmental variation over very short distances. In conclusion,we found that environmental gradients are important drivers of both phylogenetic alpha and phylogenetic beta diversities in these forests over spatial distance.Sebastián González-Caro María Natalia Umaña Esteban Álvarez Pablo R.Stevenson Nathan G.Swenson 2014Journal of Plant Ecology2014,7,2:17
Abdominal tuberculosis of the gastrointestinal tract: Revisited显示文摘Abdominal tuberculosis is an increasingly common disease that poses diagnostic challenge,as the nonspecific features of the disease which may lead to diagnostic delays and development of complications. This condition is regarded as a great mimicker of other abdominal pathology.A high index of suspicion is an important factor in early diagnosis.Abdominal involvement mayoccur in the gastrointestinal tract, peritoneum, lymphnodes or solid viscera.Various investigative methods have been used to aid in the diagnosis of abdominal tuberculosis.Early diagnosis and initiation of antituberculous therapy and surgical treatment are essential to prevent morbidity and mortality. Most of the patients respond very well to standard antitubercular therapy and surgery is required only in a minority of cases.Imaging plays an important role in diagnosis of abdominal tuberculosis because early recognition of this condition is important. We reviewed our experience with the findings on various imaging modalities for diagnosis of this potentially treatable disease.Uma Debi Vasudevan Ravisankar Kaushal Kishor Prasad Saroj Kant Sinha Arun Kumar Sharma 2014World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,40:14
Prognostic factors for recurrence of gastrointestinal bleeding due to Dieulafoy's lesion显示文摘AIM:To analyze the effectiveness of the endoscopic therapy and to identify prognostic factors for recurrent bleeding.METHODS:Retrospective study of patients with gastrointestinal bleeding secondary to Dieulafoy's lesion(DL) from 2005 to 2011.We analyzed the demographic characteristics of the patients, risk factors for gastrointestinal bleeding, endoscopic findings, characteristics of the endoscopic treatment, and the recurrence of bleeding. We included cases in which endoscopy described a lesion compatible with Dieulafoy. We excluded patients who had potentially bleeding lesions such as angiodysplasia in other areas or had undergone other gastrointestinal endoscopic procedures.RESULTS:Twenty-nine patients with DL were identified. Most of them were men with an average age of 71.5 years.Fifty-five percent of the patients received antiaggregatory or anticoagulant therapy. The most common location for DL was the stomach(51.7%).The main type of bleeding was oozing in 65.5% of cases. In 27.6% of cases, there was arterial(spurting) bleeding, and 6.9% of the patients presented with an adherent clot.A single endoscopic treatment was applied to nine patients(31%);eight of them with adrenaline and one with argon, while 69% of the patients received combined treatment.Six patients(20.7%) presented with recurrent bleeding at a median of 4 d after endoscopy(interquartile range = 97.75).Within these six patients, the new endoscopic treatment obtained a therapeutic success of 100%.The presence of arterial bleeding at endoscopy was associated with a higher recurrence rate for bleeding(50% vs 33.3% for other type of bleeding) [P = 0.024,odds ratio(OR) = 8.5,95% CI = 1.13-63.87].The use of combined endoscopic treatment prevented the recurrence of bleeding(10% vs 44.4% of single treatment)(P = 0.034,OR = 0.14,95% CI = 0.19-0.99).CONCLUSION:Endoscopic treatment of DL is safe and effective.Adrenaline monotherapy and arterial(spurting) bleeding are associated with a high rate of bleeding recurrence.Yuliana Jamanca-Poma Antonio Velasco-Guardado Concepción Piero-Pérez Renzo Calderón-Begazo Josue Umaa-Mejía Fernando Geijo-Martínez Antonio Rodríguez-Pérez 2012World Journal of Gastroenterology2012,18,40:11
Antibacterial activity of leaves and inter-nodal callus extracts of Mentha arvensis L显示文摘Objective:To determine the anti-bacterial efficacy of chloroform, ethanol, ethyl acetate and water extracts of inter-nodal and leaves derived calli extracts from Mentha arvensis(M.arvensis) against Salmonella typhi(S.typhi),Streptococcus pyogenes(S.pyogenes),Proteus vulgaris(P. vulgaris) and Bacillus subtilis(B.subtilis).Methods:The inter-nodal and leaves segments of M.arvensis were cut into 0.5-0.7 cm in length and cultured on Murashige and Skoog solid medium supplemented with 3%sucrose,gelled with 0.7%agar and different concentration of 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetie acid(2,4-D) either alone or in combinations. The preliminary phytochemical screening was performed by Brindha et al method.Antibacterial efficacy was performed by disc diffusion method and incubated for 24 h at 37℃.Results:Maximum percentage of callus formation(inter-nodal segments 84.3±0.78;leaves segments 93.8±1.27) was obtained on Murashige and Skoog’s basal medium supplemented with 3%sucrose and 1.5 mg/L of 2,4-D.The ethanol extracts of leaves derived calli showed the maximum bio-efficacy than other solvents. The leaves and stem derived calli extracts on Proteus sp.showed that the plants can be used in the treatment of urinary tract infection associated with Proteus sp.Through the bacterial efficacy studies,it is confirmed that the in vitro raised calli tissue was more effective compared to in vivo tissue. Conclusions:The bio-efficacy study confirmed that the calli mediated tissues showed the maximum zone of inhibition. The present study paved a protocol to establish high potential cell lines by in vitro culture.Johnson M Wesely EG Kavitha MS Uma V 2011Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2011,4,3:9
Anti-endothelial cell antibody rich sera from rheumatic heart disease patients induces proinflammatory phenotype and methylation alteration in endothelial cells显示文摘Rheumatic heart disease(RHD)is a major cause of cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in developing nations like India.RHD commonly affects the mitral valve which is lined by a single layer of endothelial cells(ECs).The role of ECs in mitral valve damage during RHD is not well elucidated. In here,anti-endothelial cell antibody from RHD patients has been used to stimulate the ECs(HUVECs and HMVECs).ECs proinflammatory phenotype with increased expression of TNFa,IL-6,IL-8,IFNg,IL-1b,ICAM1,VCAM1,E-selectin,laminin B,and vimentin was documented in both ECs.The promoter hypomethylation of various key inflammatory cytokines(TNFa,IL-6,and IL-8),integrin(ICAM1)associated with leukocyte transendothelial migration, and extracellular matrix genes(vimentin, and laminin)were also observed.Further, the in-vitro data was in accordance with ex-vivo observations which correlated significantly with the etiological factors such as smoking, socioeconomic status, and housing. Thus, the study sheds light on the role of ECs in RHD which is a step forward in the elucidation of disease pathogenesis.Mukul Rastogi Subendu Sarkar Ankita Makol Rana Sandip Singh Uma Nahar Saikia Dibyajyoti Banerjee Seema Chopra Anuradha Chakraborti 2018Genes & Diseases2018,5,3:5
Antifungal Effect of Plant Extract and Essential Oil显示文摘The advancement of phytochemical and phytopharmacological sciences has enabled elucidation of the composition and biological activities of several medicinal plant products including plant extract and essential oils. These products have been widely used around the world since ancient times for the treatment of various disorders such as diabetes, hypertension, peptic ulcer disease, microbial infection, sexual disorder and many more. Its popularity in the modern system of medicine is mainly due to their availability and fewer adverse reactions compared to synthetic drugs. Various scientific investigations have been conducted to look for the potential of the extract from the plant or isolated compounds for the continued use of these products in the treatment and prevention of various kinds of human diseases. It is evident from the available literature and scientific investigations that many plant species possess potential for use as a beneficial therapeutic remedy with multiple pharmacological actions such as analgesic, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, hypoglycemic, hypotensive, antimicrobial, antiulcer and anticonvulsant activities. The present review aims to provide relevant updated information about certain plant products, its composition, preparation and its fungicidal or fungistatic effects on different species of fungus as evaluated by studies done in the past. It introduces six medicinal plants that have been studied for their antifungal property and are found to be effective. The overall objective is to provide comprehensive information about the use of plant extract and essential oil for treating fungal infections and to explore the evidence supporting its effectiveness in treating fungal diseases without causing any serious adverse reactions.Keyal Uma HUANG Xin Bhatta Anil Kumar 2017Chinese Journal of Integrative Medicine2017,23,3:4

Paleoarchean bedrock lithologies across the Makhonjwa Mountains of South Africa and Swaziland linked to geochemical, magnetic and tectonic data reveal early plate tectonic genes flanking subduction margins显示文摘The Makhonjwa Mountains, traditionally referred to as the Barberton Greenstone Belt, retain an iconic Paleoarchean archive against which numerical models of early earth geodynamics can be tested. We present new geologic and structural maps, geochemical plots, geo- and thermo-chronology, and geophysical data from seven silicic, mafic to ultramafic complexes separated by major shear systems across the southern Makhonjwa Mountains. All reveal signs of modern oceanic back-arc crust and subductionrelated processes. We compare the rates of processes determined from this data and balance these against plate tectonic and plume related models. Robust rates of both horizontal and vertical tectonic processes derived from the Makhonjwa Mountain complexes are similar, well within an order of magnitude, to those encountered across modern oceanic and orogenic terrains flanking Western Pacific-like subduction zones. We conclude that plate tectonics and linked plate-boundary processes were well established by 3.2-3.6 Ga. Our work provides new constraints for modellers with rates of a 'basket' of processes against which to test Paleoarchean geodynamic models over a time period close to the length of the Phanerozoic.Maarten de Wit Harald Furnes Scott MacLennan Moctar Doucouré Blair Schoene Ute Weckmann Uma Martinez Sam Bowring 2018Geoscience Frontiers2018,9,3:4
Tree species diversity and stand structure along major community types in lowland primary and secondary moist deciduous forests in Tripura,Northeast India显示文摘Tree species diversity and population structure at different community types were described and analyzed for primary and secondary lowland moist deciduous forests in Tripura.Overall 10,957 individual trees belonging to 46 family,103 genera and 144 species were counted at ≥30 cm DBH(diameter at breast height) using 28 permanent belt transects with a size of 1 ha(10 m × 1000 m).Four different tree communities were identified. The primary forests was dominated by Shorea robusta(mean density 464.77 trees ha-1,105 species) and Schima wallichii(336.25 trees ha-1,82 species),while the secondary forests was dominated by Tectona grandis(333.88 trees ha-1,105 species) and Hevea brasiliensis(299.67 trees ha-1,82 species).Overall mean basal area in this study was 18.01m 2 ·ha-1 ;the maximum value was recorded in primary Shorea forest(26.21 m 2 ·ha-1).Mean density and diversity indices were differed significantly within four different communities. No significant differences were observed in number of species, genera, family and tree basal cover area.Significant relationships were found between the species richness and different tree population groups across the communities. Results revealed that species diversity and density were increased in those forests due to past disturbances which resulted in slow accumulation of native oligarchic small tree species.Seventeen species were recorded with <2 individuals of which Saraca asoka(Roxb.) de Wilde and Entada phaseoloides(L.) Merr.etc.extensively used in local ethno-medicinal formulations. The present S.robusta Gaertn dominated forest was recorded richer(105 species) than other reported studies.Moraceae was found more speciose family instead of Papilionaceae and Euphorbiaceae than other Indian moist deciduous forests.Seasonal phenological gap in such moist deciduous forests influenced the population of Trachypithecus pileatus and capped langur. The analysis of FIV suggested a slow trend of shifting the population of Lamiaceae group by Moraceae species in secondary T.grandis L.dominated community.Koushik Majumdar Uma Shankar Badal Kumar Datta 2012Journal of Forestry Research2012,23,4:4

The amazing potential of fungi:50 ways we can exploit fungi industrially显示文摘Fungi are an understudied, biotechnologically valuable group of organisms.Due to the immense range of habitats that fungi inhabit, and the consequent need to compete against a diverse array of other fungi, bacteria, and animals, fungi have developed numerous survival mechanisms. The unique attributes of fungi thus herald great promise for their application in biotechnology and industry. Moreover, fungi can be grown with relative ease, making production at scale viable. The search for fungal biodiversity, and the construction of a living fungi collection, both have incredible economic potential in locating organisms with novel industrial uses that will lead to novel products. This manuscript reviews fifty ways in which fungi can potentially be utilized as biotechnology. We provide notes and examples for each potential exploitation and give examples from our own work and the work of other notable researchers. We also provide a flow chart that can be used to convince funding bodies of the importance of fungi for biotechnological research and as potential products.Fungi have provided the world with penicillin, lovastatin, and other globally significant medicines, and they remain an untapped resource with enormous industrial potential.Kevin D.Hyde Jianchu Xu Sylvie Rapior Rajesh Jeewon Saisamorn Lumyong Allen Grace T.Niego Pranami D.Abeywickrama Janith V.S.Aluthmuhandiram Rashika S.Brahamanage Siraprapa Brooks Amornrat Chaiyasen K.W.Thilini Chethana Putarak Chomnunti Clara Chepkirui Boontiya Chuankid Nimali I.de Silva Mingkwan Doilom Craig Faulds Eleni Gentekaki Venkat Gopalan Pattana Kakumyan Dulanjalee Harishchandra Hridya Hemachandran Sinang Hongsanan Anuruddha Karunarathna Samantha C.Karunarathna Sehroon Khan Jaturong Kumla Ruvishika S.Jayawardena Jian-Kui Liu Ningguo Liu Thatsanee Luangharn Allan Patrick G.Macabeo Diana S.Marasinghe Dan Meeks Peter E.Mortimer Peter Mueller Sadia Nadir Karaba N.Nataraja Sureeporn Nontachaiyapoom Meghan O’Brien Watsana Penkhrue Chayanard Phukhamsakda Uma Shaanker Ramanan Achala R.Rathnayaka Resurreccion B.Sadaba Birthe Sandargo Binu C.Samarakoon Danushka S.Tennakoon Ramamoorthy Siva Wasan Sriprom T.S.Suryanarayanan Kanaporn Sujarit Nakarin Suwannarach Thitipone Suwunwong Benjarong Thongbai Naritsada Thongklang Deping Wei S.Nuwanthika Wijesinghe Jake Winiski Jiye Yan Erandi Yasanthika Marc Stadler 2019Fungal Diversity2019,,4:3
Preeclampsia and eclampsia: Etiopathogenesis and perioperative management显示文摘Preeclampsia is a pregnancy specific syndrome of elusive etiology, developing in 2nd trimester and associated with high maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. The spectrum ranges from mild preeclampsia with no systemic involvement to multi-system involvement. The course is unpredictable and delivery is the only curative treatment. Elevated blood pressure(> 160/110 mm Hg) should be reduced gradually to a safe level(140/90) using antihypertensive drugs. Prophylaxis and treatment of convulsions using Mg SO4 is indicated for severe preeclampsia. Fluid therapy is controversial due to potential delicate balance between constricted plasma volume and risk of fluid overload and pulmonary oedema secondary to increased capillary permeability and reduced colloid osmotic pressure. Single shot spinal anaesthesia is the technique of choice for caesarean delivery unless contraindicated. General anaesthesia is indicated in patients with coagulopathy or eclampsia but is associated with risk of difficult airway and exaggerated sympathetic response during laryngoscopy. Epidural analgesia and anaesthesia is safe in absence of coagulopathy.Uma Srivastava Veena Asthana Amrita Gupta 2014World Journal of Anesthesiology2014,3,2:3

Antioxidant and hepatoprotective effects of Boswellia ovalifoliolata bark extracts显示文摘Paracetamol(PCM) hepatotoxicity is related to reactive oxygen species(ROS) formation and excessive oxidative stress; natural antioxidant compounds have been tested as an alternative therapy. This study evaluated the hepatoprotective activity of an alcoholic extract of Boswellia ovalifoliolata(BO) bark against PCM-induced hepatotoxicity. BO extract also demonstrated antioxidant activity in vitro, as well as scavenger activity against 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl. Administration of PCM caused a significant increase in the release of transaminases, alkaline phosphatase, and lactate dehydrogenase in serum. Significant enhancement in hepatic lipid peroxidation and marked depletion in reduced glutathione were observed after parac intoxication with severe alterations in liver histology. BO treatment was able to mitigate hepatic damage induced by acute intoxication of PCM and showed a pronounced protective effect against lipid peroxidation, deviated serum enzymatic variables, and maintained glutathione status toward control. The results clearly demonstrate the hepatoprotective effect of BO against the toxicity induced by PCM.Bandari Uma Mahesh Shweta Shrivastava Rajeswara Rao Pragada V.G.M.Naidu Ramakrishna Sistla 2014Chinese Journal of Natural Medicines2014,12,9:3
Potential applications of lactic acid bacteria and bacteriocins in antimycobacterial therapy显示文摘Tuberculosis(TB) is a communicable disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis(M. tuberculosis). WHO estimated that 10.4 million new(incident) TB cases worldwide in year 2016. The increased prevalence of drug resistant strains and side effects associated with the current anti-tubercular drugs make the treatment options more complicated. Hence, there are necessities to identify new drug candidates to fight against various sub-populations of M. tuberculosis with less or no toxicity/side effects and shorter treatment duration. Bacteriocins produced by lactic acid bacteria(LAB) attract attention of researchers because of its 'Generally recognized as safe' status. LAB and its bacteriocins possess an effective antimicrobial activity against various bacteria and fungi. Interestingly bacteriocins such as nisin and lacticin 3147 have shown antimycobacterial activity in vitro. As probiotics, LAB plays a vital role in promoting various health benefits including ability to modulate immune response against various infectious diseases. LAB and its metabolic products activate immune system and thereby limiting the M. tuberculosis pathogenesis. The protein and peptide engineering techniques paved the ways to obtain hybrid bacteriocin derivatives from the known peptide sequence of existing bacteriocin. In this review, we focus on the antimycobacterial property and immunomodulatory role of LAB and its metabolic products. Techniques for large scale synthesis of potential bacteriocin with multifunctional activity and enhanced stability are also discussed.Anbarasu Sivaraj Revathy Sundar Radhakrishnan Manikkam Krupakar Parthasarathy Uma Rani Vanaja Kumar 2018Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2018,11,8:2
