1Effect of photo-biodegradation and biodegradation on the biogeochemical cycling of dissolved organic matter across diverse surface water bodies显示文摘The objective of this research was to quantify the temporal variation of dissolved organic matter(DOM) in five distinct waterbodies in watersheds with diverse types of land use and land cover in the presence and absence of sunlight. The water bodies were an agricultural pond, a lake in a forested watershed, a man-made reservoir, an estuary, and a bay. Two sets of samples were prepared by dispensing unfiltered samples into filtered samples in 1:10 ratio(V/V). The first set was exposed to sunlight(10 hr per day for 30 days) for examining the combined effect of photo-biodegradation, while the second set was stored in dark for examining biodegradation alone. Spectroscopic measurements in tandem with multivariate statistics were used to interpret DOM lability and composition. The results suggest that the agricultural pond behaved differently compared to other study locations during degradation experiments due to the presence of higher amount of microbial humic-like and protein-like components derived from microbial/anthropogenic sources. For all samples, a larger decrease in dissolved organic carbon(DOC) concentration(10.12% ±9.81% for photo-biodegradation and 6.65% ± 2.83% for biodegradation) and rapid transformation of DOM components(i.e., terrestrial humic-like components into microbial humic and protein-like components) were observed during photo-biodegradation experiments.Results suggest that sunlight facilitated DOM biodegradation, resulting in simpler recalcitrant molecules regardless of original composition. According to the Global Assessment of Human Induced Soil Degradation, the dryland territories of Mongolia are significantly affected by wind erosion. We used the wind erosion equation model in an Arc GIS environment to evaluate wind erosion across Mongolia. The individual factors of the wind erosion equation were parameterized using the following datasets:(a) monthly climatic data from 45 meteorological stations;(b) 16-day composites of MODIS Normalized Difference Vegetation Index data;(c) a SRTM DEM with a 90 m spatial resolution; and(d) the soil map of Mongolia. The results revealed the significant influence of aridity on wind erosion. The desert and semi-desert ecosystems were more vulnerable to wind erosion, hence more affected. The map of wind erosion revealed three major wind erosion regions where the maximum soil loss of 15–27 t/(hm^2·a) was observed. 4Mi R-122 in hepatitis B virus and hepatitis C virus dual infection显示文摘Hepatitis B virus(HBV) and hepatitis C virus(HCV) infections are the most common causes of chronic liver diseases and hepatocelluar carcinomas. Over the past few years, the liver-enriched micro RNA-122(mi R-122) has been shown to differentially regulate viral replication of HBV and HCV. It is notable that thelevel of mi R-122 is positively and negatively regulated by HCV and HBV, respectively. Consistent with the welldocumented phenomenon that mi R-122 promotes HCV accumulation, inhibition of mi R-122 has been shown as an effective therapy for the treatment of HCV infection in both chimpanzees and humans. On the other hand, mi R-122 is also known to block HBV replication, and HBV has recently been shown to inhibit mi R-122 expression; such a reciprocal inhibition between mi R-122 and HBV suggests an intriguing possibility that mi R-122 replacement may represent a potential therapy for treatment of HBV infection. As HBV and HCV have shared transmission routes, dual infection is not an uncommon scenario, which is associated with more advanced liver disease than either HBV or HCV mono-infection. Thus, there is a clear need to further understand the interaction between HBV and HCV and to delineate the role of mi R-122 in HBV/HCV dual infection in order to devise effective therapy. 5Frequency and temperature dependent electrical characteristics of CaTiO_(3) nano-ceramic prepared by high-energy ball milling显示文摘Nanocrystalline calcium titanate(CT)ceramic has been synthesized by a combination of solid-state reaction and high-energy ball milling.This nano-ceramic is characterized by X-ray diffraction(XRD),dielectric study and impedance spectroscopy.The XRD pattern shows single phase ceramic of orthorhombic symmetry.The frequency-dependent dielectric study shows that the dielectric constant is maximized at low frequencies and decreases with an increase in frequency.Impedance spectroscopy analyses reveal a non-Debye type relaxation phenomenon.A significant shift in impedance loss peaks toward the higher-frequency side indicates conduction in the material favoring the long-range motion of mobile charge carriers.The grain conduction effect is observed from the complex impedance spectrum by the appearance of one semicircular arc in Nyquist plot.It is also observed that the resistance decreases with an increase in temperature showing a negative temperature coefficient of resistance(NTCR).Various thermistor parameters have been calculated by fitting with Steinhart-Hart equation.The modulus plots represent the presence of temperature-dependent electrical relaxation phenomenon with the material.The frequency-dependent AC conductivity at different temperatures indicates that the conduction process is thermally activated.The activation energy has been calculated from an Arrhenius plot of DC conductivity and relaxation frequency.Subhanarayan SAHOO Umasankar DASH S.K.S.PARASHAR S.M.ALI 2013Journal of Advanced Ceramics2013,2,3:6
6Endoscopic ultrasound guided thrombin injection of angiographically occult pancreatitis associated visceral artery pseudoaneurysms:Case series显示文摘Pseudoaneurysm is a known complication of pancreatitis associated with significant mortality and morbidity. Imaging plays an important role in the diagnosis and management. Computed tomography(CT) helps localize the lesion and the severity of the background pancreatitis but digital subtraction angiography with coil embolization is recommended to avoid bleeding and inadvertent surgery. However, in cases where angiographic coil embolization is not feasible due to technical reasons, thrombin injection via CT or ultrasound guidance remains a viable option and often described in literature. 7Effect of Silver Nanoparticles on Growth of Eukaryotic Green Algae显示文摘Silver nanoparticles,endowed with powerful antimicrobial property,are the most widely used nanomaterial in consumer products,with associated risk of their easy access to environment and freshwater ecosystems by surface runoff.Although toxic effects of nanosilver on bacterial,fungal and mammalian cells have been documented,its impact on algal growth remains unknown.Pithophora oedogonia and Chara vulgaris are predominant members of photosynthetic eukaryotic algae,which form major component of global aquatic ecosystem.Here we report for the first time that nanosilver has significant adverse effects on growth and morphology of these filamentous green algae in a dose-dependent manner.Exposure of algal thalli to increasing concentrations of silver nanoparticles resulted in progressive depletion in algal chlorophyll content,chromosome instability and mitotic disturbance,associated with morphological malformations in algal filaments.SEM micrographs revealed dramatic alterations in cell wall in nanoparticle-treated algae,characterized with cell wall rupture and degradation in Pithophora.Although these observations underscore severe deleterious effects of nanosilver on aquatic environment,the information can also be exploited as a bioengineering strategy to control unwanted and persistent growth of noxious algal weeds that clog the municipal water supply and water channels and produce fouling of water bodies.Anjali Dash Anand P.Singh Bansh R.Chaudhary Sunil K.Singh Debabrata Dash 2012Nano-Micro Letters2012,4,3:5
8Transarterial chemoembolization for liver metastases from solid pseudopapillary epithelial neoplasm of pancreas: A case report显示文摘Solid pseudo-papillary epithelial neoplasm(SPEN) is a rare epithelial tumor of pancreas with a low malignant potential occurs most commonly in young females. We report a case of 40 years old woman presented withextensive liver metastasis from SPEN of pancreatic body for which she was operated four years ago. Due to the extensive nature of metastatic disease she was offered Transarterial chemoembolisation(TACE) using gemcitabine as chemotherapeutic agent. Short term follow up after a month of TACE with multiphase computed tomography showed > 90% resolution in the viable tumor with significant clinical improvement. TACE ensures targeted delivery of chemotherapeutic drugs in higher doses with least systemic toxicity and is more effective and safe than systemic chemotherapy. 9Effects of 42-year long-term fertilizer management on soil phosphorus availability, fractionation,adsorption–desorption isotherm and plant uptake in flooded tropical rice显示文摘Soil phosphorus(P) fractionation, adsorption, and desorption isotherm, and rice yield and P uptake were investigated in flooded tropical rice(Oryza sativa L.) following 42-year fertilizer and manure application. The treatments included low-input [unfertilized control without N, P, or K(C0N0)], farmyard manure(FYM)(C1N0), NP(C0NP), NPK(C0NPK), FYM + NP(C1NP), and high-input treatment, FYM + NPK(C1NPK). Grain yield was increased significantly by 74%over the control under the combined application of FYM + NPK. However, under low- and high-input treatments, yield as well as P uptake was maintained at constant levels for 35 years.During the same period, high yield levels and P uptake were maintained under the C0 NP, C0 NPK,and C1 NPK treatments. These are unique characteristics of a tropical flooded ecosystem, which is a self-sustaining system for rice production. The Fe–P fraction was highest compared to the Ca–P and Al–P fractions after 42 years of fertilizer application and was significantly higher under FYM + NPK treatment. The P adsorption capacity of soil was highest under the low-input treatment and lowest under long-term balanced fertilization(FYM + NPK). In contrast, P desorption capacity was highest under NPK and lowest in the control treatment. 11Role of mucoadhesive polymers in enhancing delivery of nimodipine microemulsion to brain via intranasal route显示文摘Intranasal drug administration is receiving increased attention as a delivery method for by-passing the blood–brain barrier and rapidly targeting therapeutics to the CNS.However,rapid mucociliary clearance in the nasal cavity is a major hurdle.The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of mucoadhesive polymers in enhancing the delivery of nimodipine microemulsion to the brain via the intranasal route.The optimized mucoadhesive microemulsion was characterized,and the in vitro drug release and in vivo nasal absorption of drug from the new formulation were evaluated in rats.The optimized formulation consisted of Capmul MCM as oil,Labrasol as surfactant,and Transcutol P as co-surfactant,with a particle size of 250 nm and zeta potential value of?15 mV.In vitro and ex vivo permeation studies showed an initial burst of drug release at 30 min and sustained release up to 6 h,attributable to the presence of free drug entrapped in the mucoadhesive layer.In vivo pharmacokinetic studies in rats showed that the use of the mucoadhesive microemulsion enhanced brain and plasma concentrations of nimodipine.These results suggest that incorporation of a mucoadhesive agent in a microemulsion intranasal delivery system can increase the retention time of the formulation and enhance brain delivery of drugs.Rudree Pathak Ranjeet Prasad Dash Manju Misr Manish Nivsarkar 2014Acta Pharmaceutica Sinica B2014,4,2:5

15WiGig and IEEE 802.11ad for Multi-Gigabyte-Per-Second WPAN and WLAN显示文摘The Wireless Gigabit Alliance (WiGig) and IEEE 802.11ad are developing a multigigabit wireless personal and local area network (WPAN/WLAN) specification in the 60 GHz millimeter wave band. Chipset manufacturers, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), and telecom companies are also assisting in this development. 60 GHz millimeter wave transmission will scale the speed of WLANs and WPANs to 6.75 Gbit/s over distances less than 10 meters. This technology is the first of its kind and will eliminate the need for cable around personal computers, docking stations, and other consumer electronic devices. High-definition multimedia interface (HDMI), display port, USB 3.0, and peripheral component interconnect express (PCIe) 3.0 cables will all be eliminated. Fast downloads and uploads, wireless sync, and multi-gigabit-per-second WLANs will be possible over shorter distances. 60 GHz millimeter wave supports fast session transfer (FST) protocol, which makes it backward compatible with 5 GHz or 2.4 GHz WLAN so that end users experience the same range as in today's WLANs. IEEE 802.11ad specifies the physical (PHY) sublayer and medium access control (MAC) sublayer of the protocol stack. 18Capacity-need gap in hospital resources for varying mitigation and containment strategies in India in the face of COVID-19 pandemic显示文摘Background:Due to uncertainties encompassing the transmission dynamics of COVID-19,mathematical models informing the trajectory of disease are being proposed throughout the world.Current pandemic is also characterized by surge in hospitalizations which has overwhelmed even the most resilient health systems.Therefore,it is imperative to assess health system preparedness in tandem with need projections for comprehensive outlook.Objective:We attempted this study to forecast the need for hospital resources for one year period and correspondingly assessed capacity and tipping points of Indian health system to absorb surges in need due to COVID-19.Methods:We employed age-structured deterministic SEIR model and modified it to allow for testing and isolation capacity to forecast the need under varying scenarios.Projections for documented cases were made for varying degree of containment and mitigation strategies.Correspondingly,data on health resources was collated from various government records.Further,we computed daily turnover of each of these resources which was then adjusted for proportion of cases requiring mild,severe and critical care to arrive at maximum number of COVID-19 cases manageable by health care system of India.Findings:Our results revealed pervasive deficits in the capacity of public health system to absorb surge in need during peak of epidemic.Also,model suggests that continuing strict lockdown measures in India after mid-May 2020 would have been ineffective in suppressing total infections significantly.Augmenting testing to 1,500,000 tests per day during projected peak(mid-September)under social-distancing measures and current test to positive rate of 9.7%would lead to more documented cases(60,000,000 to 90,000,000)culminating to surge in demand for hospital resources.A minimum allocation of 13x,70x and 37x times more beds for mild cases,ICU beds and mechanical ventilators respectively would be required to commensurate with need under that scenario.However,if testing capacity is limited to 9,000,000 tests per day(current situation as of 19th August 2020)under continued social-distancing measures,documented cases would plummet significantly,still requiring 5x,31x and 16x times the current allocated resources(beds for mild cases,ICU beds and mechanical ventilators respectively)to meet unmet need for COVID-19 treatment in India.Veenapani Rajeev Verma Anuraag Saini Sumirtha Gandhi Umakant Dash Shaffi Fazaludeen Koya 2020Infectious Disease Modelling2020,5,1:3
19Multifault diagnosis in WSN using a hybrid metaheuristic trained neural network显示文摘Wireless sensor networks are susceptible to failures of nodes and links due to various physical or computational reasons.Some physical reasons include a very high temperature,a heavy load over a node,and heavy rain.Computational reasons could be a third-party intrusive attack,communication conflicts,or congestion.Automated fault diagnosis has been a well-studied problem in the research community.In this paper,we present an automated fault diagnosis model that can diagnose multiple types of faults in the category of hard faults and soft faults.Our proposed model implements a feed-forward neural network trained with a hybrid metaheuristic algorithm that combines the principles of exploration and exploitation of the search space.The proposed methodology consists of different phases,such as a clustering phase,a fault detection and classification phase,and a decision and diagnosis phase.The implemented methodology can diagnose composite faults,such as hard permanent,soft permanent,intermittent,and transient faults for sensor nodes as well as for links.The proposed implementation can also classify different types of faulty behavior for both sensor nodes and links in the network.We present the obtained theoretical results and computational complexity of the implemented model for this particular study on automated fault diagnosis.The performance of the model is evaluated using simulations and experiments conducted using indoor and outdoor testbeds.Pabitra Mohan Khilar Tirtharaj Dash 2020Digital Communications and Networks2020,6,1:3
