15Neglected tropical diseases risk correlates with poverty and early ecosystem destruction显示文摘Background Neglected tropical diseases affect the most vulnerable populations and cause chronic and debilitating disorders.Socioeconomic vulnerability is a well-known and important determinant of neglected tropical diseases. For example, poverty and sanitation could influence parasite transmission.Nevertheless, the quantitative impact of socioeconomic conditions on disease transmission risk remains poorly explored. Methods This study investigated the role of socioeconomic variables in the predictive capacity of risk models of neglected tropical zoonoses using a decade of epidemiological data(2007–2018)from Brazil.Vector-borne diseases investigated in this study included dengue, malaria,Chagas disease, leishmaniasis, and Brazilian spotted fever, while directly-transmitted zoonotic diseases included schistosomiasis, leptospirosis, and hantaviruses.Environmental and socioeconomic predictors were combined with infectious disease data to build environmental and socioenvironmental sets of ecological niche models and their performances were compared. Results Socioeconomic variables were found to be as important as environmental variables in influencing the estimated likelihood of disease transmission across large spatial scales. The combination of socioeconomic and environmental variables improved overall model accuracy(or predictive power)by 10%on average(P<0.01),reaching a maximum of 18%in the case of dengue fever.Gross domestic product was the most important socioeconomic variable(37%relative variable importance, all individual models exhibited P<0.00),showing a decreasing relationship with disease indicating poverty as a major factor for disease transmission.Loss of natural vegetation cover between 2008 and 2018 was the most important environmental variable(42%relative variable importance,P<0.05)among environmental models, exhibiting a decreasing relationship with disease probability, showing that these diseases are especially prevalent in areas where natural ecosystem destruction is on its initial stages and lower when ecosystem destruction is on more advanced stages. Conclusions Destruction of natural ecosystems coupled with low income explain macro-scale neglected tropical and zoonotic disease probability in Brazil.Addition of socioeconomic variables improves transmission risk forecasts on tandem with environmental variables. Our results highlight that to efficiently address neglected tropical diseases, public health strategies must target both reduction of poverty and cessation of destruction of natural forests and savannas.Arthur Ramalho Magalhães Cláudia Torres Codeço Jens-Christian Svenning Luis E.Escobar Paige Van de Vuurst Thiago Gonçalves-Souza 2023Infectious Diseases of Poverty2023,12,2:0
16Bird habitat preferences drive hemoparasite infection in the Neotropical region显示文摘The role that the environment plays in vector-borne parasite infection is one of the central factors for understanding disease dynamics. We assessed how Neotropical bird foraging strata and habitat preferences determine infection by parasites of the genera Haemoproteus,Plasmodium,Leucocytozoon, and Trypanosoma and filarioids, and tested for phylogenetic signal in these host-parasite associations. We performed extensive searches of the scientific literature and created a database of hemoparasite surveys. We collected data on host body mass, foraging strata, habitat preference, and migratory status, and tested if host ecological traits predict each hemoparasite occurrence and prevalence using a phylogenetic Bayesian framework.Species of Plasmodium tend to infect birds from tropical forests while birds from altitudinal environments are likely to be infected by species of Leucocytozoon. The probability of a bird being infected by filarioid or Trypanosoma is higher in lowland forests.Bird species that occur in anthropic environments and dry habitats of tropical latitudes are more susceptible to infection by species of Haemoproteus.Host foraging strata is also influential and bird species that forage in the mid-high and canopy strata are more prone to infection by species of Haemoproteus and filarioids. We also identified phylogenetic signal for host-parasite associations with the probability of infection of Neotropical birds by any hemoparasite being more similar among more closely related species. We provided a useful framework to identify environments that correlate with hemoparasite infection, which is also helpful for detecting areas with potential suitability for hemoparasite infection due to land conversion and climate change.Gabriel Massaccesi DE LA TORRE Karla Magalhães CAMPIÃO 2021Integrative Zoology2021,16,5:0
17Cardiovascular rehabilitation in patients aged 70-year-old or older:benefits on functional capacity, physical activity and metabolic profile in younger vs.older patients显示文摘Background The benefits of exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation(EBCR)programs in post-acute myocardial infarction(AMI)patients have been demonstrated. Our aim was to assess the impact of EBCR in³70-years-old vs.younger post-AMI patients. Methods We retrospectively evaluated patients who underwent a supervised EBCR protocol, twice a week during 6-12 weeks. We evaluated changes in several outcomes based on pre-and post-CRP assessments. Results Of a total of 1607 patients,333(21%)were³70-years-old.After the EBCR,an overall improvement on functional capacity, daily physical activity, lipid profile, body mass index, glycated hemoglobin(HbA1c),N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide(NT-pro-BNP)and C-reactive protein was observed in both younger and older patients(P<0.05).Older patients showed a smaller benefit on the increment of daily physical activity and lipid profile improvement, but a larger reduction in NT-pro-BNP.In the multivariate analysis, only improvements on daily physical activity and HbA1c were dependent on age. Conclusion As their younger counterparts, older patients, significantly improved functional capacity, metabolic parameters and level of daily physical activity after EBCR.Marta Fontes-Oliveira Maria Trêpa Patrícia Rodrigues Preza Fernandes Sandra Magalhães Sofia Cabral Mário Santos Severo Torres 2020Journal of Geriatric Cardiology2020,17,9:0
18The roles of anurans in antagonistic networks are explained by life-habit and body-size显示文摘Interactions among living beings are the structuring basis of ecosystems, and studies of networks allow us to identify the patterns and consistency of such interactions.Antagonistic networks reflect the energy flow of communities, and identifying network structure and the biological aspects that influence its stability is crucial to understanding ecosystem functioning. We used antagonistic anuran interactions-predator-prey and host-parasite-to assess structural patterns and to identify the key anuran species structuring these networks. We tested whether anuran body-size and life-habit are related to their roles in these networks. We collected individuals of 9 species of anurans from an area of the Atlantic Forest in Brazil and identified their prey and helminth parasites. We used network(modularity, specialization, and nestedness)and centrality metrics(degree, closeness, and betweenness)to identify the role of anuran species in both networks. We then evaluated whether anuran body-size or life-habit were related to anuran centrality using generalized linear mixed models. The networks formed specialized interactions in compartments composed by key species from different habits. In our networks, anurans with rheophilic and cryptozoic habit are central in predator-prey networks, and those with larger body size and arboreal and cryptozoic habit in the host-parasite network. This study represents a step towards a better understanding of the influential factors that affect the structure of anuran antagonist networks,as well as to recognize the functioning roles of anuran species.Amanda Caroline DUDCZAK Gabriel Massaccesi DE LA TORRE Lorena EUCLYDES Karla Magalhães CAMPIÃO 2022Integrative Zoology2022,17,4:0
