1The enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry mission—eXTP显示文摘In this paper we present the enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry mission—eXTP. eXTP is a space science mission designed to study fundamental physics under extreme conditions of density, gravity and magnetism. The mission aims at determining the equation of state of matter at supra-nuclear density, measuring effects of QED, and understanding the dynamics of matter in strong-field gravity. In addition to investigating fundamental physics, eXTP will be a very powerful observatory for astrophysics that will provide observations of unprecedented quality on a variety of galactic and extragalactic objects. 2Dry deposition velocity of total suspended particles and meteorological influence in four locations in Guangzhou,China显示文摘Dry deposition velocity of total suspended particles(TSP) is an effective parameter that describes the speed of atmospheric particulate matter deposit to the natural surface.It is also an important indicator to the capacity of atmosphere self-depuration.However,the spatial and temporal variations in dry deposition velocity of TSP at different urban landscapes and the relationship between dry deposition velocity and the meteorological parameters are subject to large uncertainties.We concurrently investigated this relationship at four different landscapes of Guangzhou,from October to December of 2009.The result of the average dry deposition velocity is(1.49 ± 0.77),(1.44 ± 0.77),(1.13 ± 0.53) and(1.82 ± 0.82) cm/sec for urban commercial landscape,urban forest landscape,urban residential landscape and country landscape,respectively.This spatial variation can be explained by the difference of both particle size composition of TSP and meteorological parameters of sampling sites.Dry deposition velocity of TSP has a positive correlation with wind speed,and a negative correlation with temperature and relative humidity.Wind speed is the strongest factor that affects the magnitude of TSP dry deposition velocity,and the temperature is another considerable strong meteorological factor.We also find out that the relative humidity brings less impact,especially during the dry season.It is thus implied that the current global warming and urban heat island effect may lead to correlative changes in TSP dry deposition velocity,especially in the urban areas.Leifu Chen Shaolin Peng Jingang Liu Qianqian Hou 2012Journal of Environmental Sciences2012,24,4:10

4How does tree age influence damage and recovery in forests impacted by freezing rain and snow?显示文摘The response and recovery mechanisms of forests to damage from freezing rain and snow events are a key topic in forest research and management. However, the relationship between the degree of damage and tree age, i.e., whether seedlings, young trees, or adult trees are most vulnerable, remains unclear and is rarely reported. We investigated the effect of tree age on the degrees of vegetation damage and subsequent recovery in three subtropical forest types-coniferous, mixed, and broad-leaved —in the Tianjing Mountains, South China, after a series of rare icy rain and freezing snow events in 2008. The results showed that damage and recovery rates were both dependent on tree age, with the proportion of damaged vegetation increasing with age(estimated by diameter at breast height, DBH) in all three forest types and gradually plateauing. Significant variation occurred among forest types. Young trees in the coniferous forest were more vulnerable than those in the broad-leaved forest. The type of damage also varied with tree age in different ways in the three forest types. The proportion of young seedlings that were uprooted(the most severe type of damage) was highest in the coniferous forest. In the mixed forest, young trees were significantly more likely to be uprooted than seedlings and adult trees, while in the broad-leaved forest, the proportion of uprooted adult trees was significantly higher than that of seedlings and young trees. There were also differences among forest types in how tree age affected damage recovery. In the coniferous forest, the recovery rate of trees with broken trunks or crowns(DBH > 2.5 cm) increased with tree age. However, in the mixed and broad-leaved forests, no obvious correlation between the recovery rate of trees with broken trunks or crowns and tree age was observed. Trees with severe root damage did not recover; they were uprooted and died. In these forests, vegetation damage and recovery showed tree age dependencies, which varied with tree shape, forest type, and damage type. 5^(14)C measurement of forest soils in Dinghushan Biosphere Reserve显示文摘Organic carbon in forest soils of Qingyunsi and Wukesong profiles can be divided into fast and slow components. Δ14C values of these profiles decrease with increasing of depth. The Δ14C values in 30—40 cm depth interval of Wukesong profile are decreasing sharply until a very low value,showing that a strong geological environment change occurred about 1 560 years ago. The 14C apparent ages of Wukesong profile show that the coniferous and broad-leaf mixed forests around Wukesong profile have been developing since 425 a BP, which is consistent with historical documents. 14Characterization of a Novel Gene, srpA, Conferring Resistance to Streptogramin A, Pleuromutilins, and Lincosamides in Streptococcus suis显示文摘Antimicrobial resistance is undoubtedly one of the greatest global health threats. The emergence of multidrug-resistant(MDR) Gram-positive pathogens, such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus(MRSA), vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus faecium(VRE), and β-lactamase-resistant Streptococcus pneumonia, has severely limited our antibiotic arsenal. Numerous ribosome-targeting antibiotics, especially pleuromutilins, oxazolidinones, and streptogramins, are viewed as promising alternatives against aggressive MDR pathogens. In this study, we identified a new adenosine triphosphate(ATP)-binding cassete(ABC)-F family determinant, srp A, in Streptococcus suis(S. suis) by means of a comparative analysis of the whole-genome sequences of tiamulin(TIA)-resistant and TIA-sensitive bacteria. Functional cloning confirmed that the deduced gene can mediate cross-resistance to pleuromutilins, lincosamides, and streptogramin A in S. suis and S. aureus. A sequence alignment revealed that Srp A shares the highest amino acid identity with Vga(E)(36%) and shows canonical characteristics of ABC-F family members.In Srp A-ribosome docked compounds, the extended loop region of Srp A approaches the valnemulinbinding pocket in the ribosome peptidyl-transferase center and competes with bound valnemulin. A detailed mutational analysis of the loop residues confirmed that this domain is crucial for Srp A activity,as substitutions or truncations of this region affect the efficiency and specificity of antibiotic resistance.Intracellular antibiotics accumulation indicated that Srp A does not act as an efflux pump, while a ribosome binding assay supported the protective effects of Srp A on the ribosome by preventing antibiotic binding as well as displacing bound drugs.
