| 1 | Biochar increases soil microbial biomass with changes in extra-and intracellular enzyme activities:a global meta-analysis显示文摘Biochar application to soil has been proposed as a potential management strategy to enhance soil carbon(C)sequestration,reduce greenhouse gas emission,improve soil quality,and increase crop productivity.The effects of biochar on soil microbial and enzyme activities are integrally linked to the potential of biochar in achieving these benefits.We conducted a global meta-analysis to assess the effects of biochar on soil microbial biomass C and nitrogen(N)and the activities of 12 enzymes,and identify key factors affecting those soil microbial properties using 964 data points from 72 papers.We found that biochar effects on enzyme activities vary widely with soil type,biochar property and the type of enzyme studied.Biochar significantly increased microbial biomass C(MBC)and urease,alkaline phosphatase and dehydrogenase activities by 21.7%,23.1%,25.4%and 19.8%,respectively,with no significant negative effects on any of the enzymes analyzed in this study.Biochar application was more effective in increasing MBC and enzyme activities in soils with low pH(<6.5),TC(<20 g kg^(−1)),TN(<2 g kg^(−1)),and a fine texture(including clay,clay loam and silt clay).Biochars produced at pyrolysis temperature of 350-550℃ with a high pH(>10)and low C/N ratio(<50)increased MBC and urease and dehydrogenase activities.Biochar increased MBC and N-acquisition enzyme activities in the field but not in lab incubation experiments.Urease was increased in short-term studies(within 100 days of biochar application)while alkaline phosphatase was increased in long-term studies that span more than 1 year.The increase in MBC and activities of some soil enzymes in response to biochar application with no negative effects on any hydrolytic and oxidative enzymes illustrate its potential to enhance soil quality particularly in the degraded soils with low nutrient availability and fertility due to limited soil microbial and enzymatic activities.This study also shows that biochars can be designed to achieve specific properties for enhancing microbial and enzymatic activities for specific soils. | Prem Pokharel Zilong Ma Scott X.Chang | 2020 | Biochar2020,2,1: | 18 |
| 2 | Recent progress in methane dehydroaromatization: From laboratory curiosities to promising technology显示文摘Direct conversion of methane to benzene or other valuable chemicals is a very promising process for the efficient application of natural gas. Compared with conversion processes that require oxidants, non-oxidative direct conversion is more attractive due to high selectivity to the target product. In this paper, an alternative route for methane dehydrogenation and selective conversion to benzene and hydrogen without the participation of oxygen is discussed. A brief review of the catalysts used in methane dehydroaromatization (MDA) is first given, followed by our current understanding of the location and the active phase of Mo species, the reaction mechanism, the mechanism of carbonaceous deposit and the deactivation of Mo/zeolite catalysts are systematically discussed. Ways to improve the catalytic activity and stability are described in detail based on catalyst and reaction as well as reactor design. | 5 | Transition Metal Aluminum Boride as a New Candidate for Ambient-Condition Electrochemical Ammonia Synthesis显示文摘Achieving more meaningful N2 conversion by reducing the energy input and carbon footprint is now being investigated through a method of N2 fixation instead of the Haber-Bosch process.Unfortunately,the electrochemical N2 reduction reaction(NRR)method as a rising approach currently still shows low selectivity(Faradaic efficiency<10%)and high-energy consumption[applied potential at least-0.2 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode(RHE)].Here,the role of molybdenum aluminum boride single crystals,belonging to a family of ternary transition metal aluminum borides known as MAB phases,is reported for the electrochemical NRR for the first time,at a low applied potential(-0.05 V versus RHE)under ambient conditions and in alkaline media.Due to the unique nano-laminated crystal structure of the MAB phase,these inexpensive materials have been found to exhibit excellent electrocatalytic performances(NH3 yield:9.2μg h^-1cm^-2mgcat^-1.,Faradaic efficiency:30.1%)at the low overpotential,and to display a high chemical stability and sustained catalytic performance.In conjunction,further mechanism studies indicate B and Al as main-group metals show a highly selective affinity to N2 due to the strong interaction between the B 2p/Al 3p band and the N 2p orbitals,while Mo exhibits specific catalytic activity toward the subsequent reduction reaction.Overall,the MAB-phase catalyst under the synergy of the elements within ternary compound can suppress the hydrogen evolution reaction and achieve enhanced NRR performance.The significance of this work is to provide a promising candidate in the future synthesis of ammonia. | Yang Fu Peter Richardson Kangkang Li Hai Yu Bing Yu Scott Donne Erich Kisi Tianyi Ma | 2020 | Nano-Micro Letters2020,12,5: | 3 |
| 6 | Neglected Rural Public Health Issue:The Case of Intestinal Roundworms显示文摘Despite increasing institutional and financial support,certain public health issues are still neglected by the Chinese Government.The present paper examines the soil-transmitted helminth(STH)infection and reinfection rates by conducting a survey on 1724 children in Guizhou Province,China.Our results indicate that 37.5 percent of children had been infected with one or more of the three types of tested STH.However,only 50.4 percent of children reported having taken deworming medicine during the 18-month period before the survey.Of those who reported being dewormed,34.6 percent tested positive for STH infections.Poverty and number of siblings are significantly and positively correlated with infection and reinfection,and parental education is significantly and negatively correlated with infection and reinfection.Given the ineffectiveness of treatment in these areas to date,for anthelmintic campaigns to actually succeed,China must pay more attention to locallevel incentives to improve children's health. | Linxiu Zhang Yingping Cai Xiaobing Wang Xiaochen Ma Alexis Medina D.Scott Smith Scott Rozelle | 2013 | China & World Economy2013,21,3: | 2 |
