1Improving the performance of conventional base isolation systems by an external variable negative stiffness device under near-fault and long-period ground motions显示文摘Recent studies have shown that base-isolated objects with long fundamental natural periods are highly influenced by long-period earthquakes. These long-period waves result in large displacements for isolators, possibly leading to exceedance of the allowable displacement limits. Conventional isolation systems, in general, fail to resist such large displacements. This has prompted the need to modify conventional base isolation systems. The current work focuses on the development of an external device, comprising a unit of negative and positive springs, for improving the performance of conventional base isolation systems. This unit accelerates the change in the stiffness of the isolation system where the stiffness of the positive spring varies linearly in terms of the displacement response of the isolated objects. The target objects of the present study are small structures such as computer servers, sensitive instruments and machinery. Numerical studies show that the increase in the damping of the system and the slope of the linear function is effective in reducing the displacement response. An optimal range of damping values and slope, satisfying the stability condition and the allowable limits of both displacement and acceleration responses when the system is subjected to near-fault and long-period ground motions simultaneously, is proposed.Sandhya Nepal Masato Saitoh 2020Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Vibration2020,19,4:6
2Tailoring active compounds across biological membranes by cubosomal technology: an updated review显示文摘It is challenging for many drugs to be transported across various biological membranes. Furthermore, development of many drugs gets thwarted owing to their hydrophilic nature. The bioavailability of such drugs, which is the function of their ability to cross the membrane, tends to be low and exhibit high intra and inter subject variability. At present, formulation scientists are pursuing many projects for transdermal, nasal, target delivery of many active compounds, and it is prudent to explore alternative possibilities. Cubosomes offer transportation and tailoring of active compounds intended for both systemic and dermal delivery. Cubosomes are dispersed, self-assembled nanoparticles of bicontinuous cubic liquid crystalline phase formed from lipid and surfactant systems. Monoolein, poloxamer 407 and polyvinyl alcohol are the mostly used ingredients in the formulation of cubosomes. The adjustment in lipid composition can control the internal and structural changes of cubosomes. Based on the nodal surfaces, three structures of cubosomes proposed are Pn3m, Ia3d and Im3m. Top-down and bottom-up techniques are widely considered in the formulation process of extreme viscous bulk phase and aggregate from a precursor respectively. 3Physiological Basis of Stagnant Flooding Tolerance in Rice显示文摘Stagnant flooding(SF) is an important constraint which prolonges partial submergence damages of rice plants and reduces grain yield. Due to the heterogeneity in flood-prone ecosystem, many different types of traditional rice varieties are being grown by the farmers. The local landraces adapted to extreme in water availability could be the sources of new gene(s) which would be utilized to improve the adaptability of rice to SF with high yield. The main goal of this study is to identify new genetic resources tolerant to SF based on morpho-physiological traits. A total of 16 rice varieties were selected after initial screening from more than 400 rice varieties which were collected from eastern states of India. The increase rate of plant height was higher under SF compared to control, whereas no such trend was observed in the increment rate of aboveground total dry weight and culm dry weight. Area of aerenchyma gas spaces per tiller increased whereas root oxidase activity decreased under SF. The reduction of root oxidase activity, leaf area, and leaf dry weight was higher in susceptible varieties under SF compared to control. Stability index for different grain yield and yield attributes revealed that the impact of SF differed among different varieties. Correlation coefficient studies among different parameters taking stability index showed significant association with the grain yield. Based on the findings, it was concluded that maintenance of equivalent panicle weight and panicle number, plant height and harvest index at the maturity stage, leaf area, leaf and culm dry weights, root oxidase activity and tiller numbers at the flowering stage under SF compared to control help the plant to counteract the adverse effects of SF.Sandhya R.KUANAR Anuprita RAY Santosh K.SETHI Krishnendu CHATTOPADHYAY Ramani K.SARKAR 2017Rice science2017,24,2:4
4Automation of immunohistochemical evaluation in breast cancer using image analysis显示文摘AIM:To automate breast cancer diagnosis and to study the inter-observer and intra-observer variations in the manual evaluations.METHODS:Breast tissue specimens from sixty cases were stained separately for estrogen receptor(ER),progesterone receptor(PR)and human epidermal growth factor receptor-2(HER-2/neu).All cases were assessed by manual grading as well as image analysis.The manual grading was performed by an experienced expert pathologist.To study inter-observer and intra-observer variations,we obtained readings from another pathologist as the second observer from a different laboratory who has a little less experience than the first observer.We also took a second reading from the second observer to study intra-observer variations.Image analysis was carried out using in-house developed software(TissueQuant).A comparison of the results from image analysis and manual scoring of ER,PR and HER-2/neu was also carried out.RESULTS:The performance of the automated analysis in the case of ER,PR and HER-2/neu expressions was compared with the manual evaluations.The performance of the automated system was found to correlate well with the manual evaluations.The inter-observer variations were measured using Spearman correlation coefficient r and 95%confidence interval.In the case of ER expression,Spearman correlation r=0.53,in the case of PR expression,r=0.63,and in the case of HER-2/neu expression,r=0.68.Similarly,intra-observer variations were also measured.In the case of ER,PR and HER-2/neu expressions,r=0.46,0.66 and 0.70,respectively.CONCLUSION:The automation of breast cancer diagnosis from immunohistochemically stained specimens is very useful for providing objective and repeatable evaluations.Keerthana Prasad Avani Tiwari Sandhya Ilanthodi Gopalakrishna Prabhu Muktha Pai 2011World Journal of Clinical Oncology2011,2,4:3
5Recurrence and cancerization of ameloblastoma: multivariate analysis of 87 recurrent craniofacial ameloblastoma to assess risk factors associated with early recurrence and secondary ameloblastic carcinoma显示文摘Objective: The recurrence and progression of ameloblastoma are unpredictable. Therefore, we examined the influence of clinical factors on recurrence time and analyzed the clinical factors associated with early recurrence and cancerization. We then developed a staging system to predict early recurrence and cancerization.Methods: All of the primary craniofacial ameloblastoma patients treated in Shanghai Ninth People's Hospital,Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine were recorded. There were 87 recurrent cases used to create a staging system and tested in a Cox regression analysis for risk factors associated with early recurrence or cancerization following surgery.Results: There were 890 craniofacial ameloblastoma patients, and 72 cases had recurrence. There were also 15 cases with cancerous recurrence. The overall recurrence rate was 9.78%, and the cancer rate was 1.69%. The primary cases were classified into the following 3 stages based on clinicopathological features: stage I, the maximum tumor diameter ≤6 cm; stage II, the maximum diameter of tumor >6 cm or tumor invasion to the maxilla sinus/orbital floor/soft tissue; and stage III, tumor invasion of the skull base or metastasis into regional lymph nodes. When the method of surgery was controlled by partial correlation, the staging had significance with recurrence time(P=0.004). The Cox analysis showed the tumor stage was correlated with recurrence time(P=0.027)and cancerization time(P=0.002). However, the surgical method did not influence the recurrence time when adjusted for cofounding variables.Conclusions: Tumor larger than 6 cm and invasion to soft tissues or adjacent anatomical structures are associated with early recurrence. 6ZnO、ZnO/ZnS和ZnO/ZnS/α-Fe_2O_3纳米复合材料的光致发光行为及可见光催化活性(英文)显示文摘为了获得用于染料甲基橙(MEO)降解的高效、经济、易得的光催化剂,采用简单的化学合成法在水溶液介质中制备ZnO、ZnO/ZnS和ZnO/ZnS/α-Fe_2O_3纳米复合材料。利用X射线衍射(XRD)和BET技术测定合成材料的物相、结晶度、表面结构和表面行为。X射线衍射结果表明,ZnO、ZnO/ZnS和ZnO/ZnS/α-Fe2O3纳米材料结晶良好。根据XRD谱中各峰的强度,确定纳米复合材料的组成。BET分析表明,所制备的材料具有介孔行为、Ⅳ型(吸附脱附)曲线和H4型迟滞现象。3种材料中,ZnO/ZnS/α-Fe_2O_3复合材料的比表面积最大。利用紫外-可见光谱分析,测定材料的带隙能,光致发光光谱(PL)则用来确定材料的发射行为和表面缺陷。在PL光谱中,ZnO/ZnS的紫外峰强度比ZnO的低,且ZnO/ZnS/α-Fe_2O_3的紫外峰强度更低。与ZnO相比,ZnO/ZnS的可见发射光谱强度增大,且ZnO/ZnS/α-Fe_2O_3的可见发射光谱强度比ZnO/ZnS的更大。所合成的材料被用作染料甲基橙降解的光催化剂。光降解数据表明,3种染料甲基橙降解的光催化剂中ZnO/ZnS/α-Fe_2O_3是最佳的。紫外光发射峰强度的降低和可见光发射强度的增大导致电子和空穴复合减少,因而使得ZnO/ZnS/α-Fe_2O_3具有最高的光催化活性。Gaurav HITKARI Sandhya SINGH Gajanan PANDEY 2018Transactions of Nonferrous Metals Society of China2018,28,7:3
7Salivary gland disorders:A comprehensive review显示文摘Salivary glands are complex in nature. They could be either tubulo acinar, merocrine or exocrine glands secreting mainly saliva. Salivary gland is one of the main soft tissue structures in the maxillofacial area. Saliva is a clear, slightly acidic muco serous fluid that coats the teeth, mucosa and thereby helps to create and maintain a healthy environment in the oral cavity. Salivary glands may be affected by a number of diseases: local and systemic and the prevalence of salivary gland diseases depend on various etiological factors. The glands may be infected byviral, bacterial, rarely fungal or its ductal obstruction which may cause painful swelling or obstruction, affecting their functions. The salivary gland may also be affected by a various benign and malignant tumours. 13Phytochemicals targeting NF-kB signaling:Potential anti-cancer interventions显示文摘Nuclear factor kB(NF-kB)is a ubiquitous regulator of the signalome and is indispensable for various biological cell functions.NF-kB consists of five transcription factors that execute both cytoplasmic and nuclear signaling processes in cells.NF-kB is the only signaling molecule that governs both pro-and antiapoptotic,and pro-and anti-inflammatory responses.This is due to the canonical and non-canonical components of the NF-kB signaling pathway.Together,these pathways orchestrate cancer-related inflammation,hyperplasia,neoplasia,and metastasis.Non-canonical NF-kB pathways are particularly involved in the chemoresistance of cancer cells.In view of its pivotal role in cancer progression,NF-kB represents a potentially significant therapeutic target for modifying tumor cell behavior.Several phytochemicals are known to modulate NF-kB pathways through the stabilization of its inhibitor,IkB,by inhibiting phosphorylation and ubiquitination thereof.Several natural pharmacophores are known to inhibit the nuclear translocation of NF-kB and associated pro-inflammatory responses and cell survival pathways.In view of this and the high degree of specificity exhibited by various phytochemicals for the NF-kB component,we herein present an in-depth overview of these phytochemicals and discuss their mode of interaction with the NF-kB signaling pathways for controlling the fate of tumor cells for cancerdirected interventions.Akansha Chauhan Asim Ul Islam Hridayesh Prakash Sandhya Singh 2022Journal of Pharmaceutical Analysis2022,12,3:2
