1Modeling sustainability:population,inequality,consumption,and bidirectional coupling of the Earth and Human Systems显示文摘Over the last two centuries,the impact of the Human System has grown dramatically,becoming strongly dominant within the Earth System in many diferent ways.Consumption,inequality,and population have increased extremely fast,especially since about 1950,threatening to overwhelm the many critical functions and ecosystems of the Earth System.Changes in the Earth System,in turn,have important feedback efects on the Human System,with costly and potentially serious consequences.However,current models do not incorporate these critical feedbacks.We argue that in order to understand the dynamics of either system,Earth System Models must be coupled with Human System Models through bidirectional couplings representing the positive,negative,and delayed feedbacks that exist in the real systems.In particular,key Human System variables,such as demographics,inequality,economic growth,and migration,are not coupled with the Earth System but are instead driven by exogenous estimates,such as United Nations population projections.his makes current models likely to miss important feedbacks in the real Earth–Human system,especially those that may result in unexpected or counterintuitive outcomes,and thus requiring diferent policy interventions from current models.he importance and imminence of sustainability challenges,the dominant role of the Human System in the Earth System,and the essential roles the Earth System plays for the Human System,all call for collaboration of natural scientists,social scientists,and engineers in multidisciplinary research and modeling to develop coupled Earth–Human system models for devising efective science-based policies and measures to beneit current and future generations.Safa Motesharrei Jorge Rivas Eugenia Kalnay Ghassem R.Asrar Antonio J.Busalacchi Robert F.Cahalan Mark A.Cane Rita R.Colwell Kuishuang Feng Rachel S.Franklin Klaus Hubacek Fernando Miralles-Wilhelm Takemasa Miyoshi Matthias Ruth Roald Sagdeev Adel Shirmohammadi Jagadish Shukla Jelena Srebric Victor M.Yakovenko Ning Zeng 2016National Science Review2016,3,4:34
2CFD simulation of an industrial hydrocyclone with Eulerian-Eulerian approach: A case study显示文摘In the present study, a three-dimensional computational fluid dynamics simulation together with experimental field measurements was applied to optimize the performance of an industrial hydrocyclone at Sarcheshmeh copper complex. In the simulation, the Eulerian–Eulerian approach was used for solid and liquid phases, the latter being water. In this approach, nine continuous phases were considered for the solid particles with different sizes and one continuous phase for water. The continuity and momentum equations with inclusion of buoyancy and drag forces were solved by the finite volume method. The k–e RNG turbulence model was used for modeling of turbulency. There was a good agreement between the simulation results and the experimental data. After validation of the model accuracy, the effect of inlet solid percentage, pulp inlet velocity, rod inserting in the middle of the hydrocyclone and apex diameter on hydrocyclone performance was investigated. The results showed that by decreasing the inlet solid percentage and increasing the pulp inlet velocity, the efficiency of hydrocyclone increased. 4Vascular depression for radiology: A review of the construct,methodology,and diagnosis显示文摘Vascular depression(VD)as defined by magnetic resonance imaging(MRI)has been proposed as a unique subtype of late-life depression.The VD hypothesis posits that cerebrovascular disease,as characterized by the presence of MRIdefined white matter hyperintensities,contributes to and increases the risk for depression in older adults.VD is also accompanied by cognitive impairment and poor antidepressant treatment response.The VD diagnosis relies on MRI findings and yet this clinical entity is largely unfamiliar to neuroradiologists and is rarely,if ever,discussed in radiology journals.The primary purpose of this review is to introduce the MRI-defined VD construct to the neuroradiology community.Case reports are highlighted in order to illustrate the profile of VD in terms of radiological,clinical,and neuropsychological findings.A secondary purpose is to elucidate and elaborate on the measurement of cerebrovascular disease through visual rating scales and semi-and fully-automated volumetric methods.These methods are crucial for determining whether lesion burden or lesion severity is the dominant pathological contributor to VD.Additionally,these rating methods have implications for the growing field of computer assisted diagnosis.Since VD has been found to have a profile that is distinct from other types of late-life depression,neuroradiologists,in conjunction with psychiatrists and psychologists,should consider VD in diagnosis and treatment planning.Sara N Rushia Al Amira Safa Shehab Jeffrey N Motter Dakota A Egglefield Sophie Schiff Joel R Sneed Ernst Garcon 2020World Journal of Radiology2020,12,5:5
5Effects of geoclimatic factors on the variability in Pinus pinea cone, seed, and seedling traits in Turkey native habitats显示文摘Background:Stone pine(Pinus pinea L.)is harvested for its edible kernels.It is an important forest tree species,and also plays an important role in afforestation.Successful afforestation activities strongly depend on the quality of seeds and seedlings.Five eastern native populations of stone pine were analyzed,in terms of their geographical and climatic parameters,in order to identify their cone,seed,pine nut,and seedling traits.With this regard,we aimed to contribute to the reforestation,yield,and breeding of this species.Results:All native populations occur in the sub-humid bioclimatic zone,according to Emberger’s bioclimatic classification,ranging 74.7-63.2 of Emberger’s Q Index value(Q),which synthesizes humidity and temperature,with lower values indicating more arid conditions.With regard to geographical factors,altitude was found to have the greatest effect on cone diameter and seed weight,while there was a weak correlation of cone,seed,and pine nut dimension with longitude and latitude.In terms of climatic factors,Q and mean of the maximum temperature of June,July,and August(ME)were found to be the main drivers behind significant effects in cone,seed,and pine nut morphometric traits.The most negative effect on seed number cone−1(r:−0.897),pine nut number cone−1(r:−0.923),pine nut yield(r:−0.903),and pine nut weight(r:−0.878)was Q,whereas cone diameter,seed length,and seed weight were positively correlated with the ME(r:0.939,r:0.889,and r:0.866,respectively).Cone and seed diameter and seed weight increased with decreasing summer drought index(r:−0.806,r:−0.846,and r:−0.866,respectively).Rainfall in the June of the third year prior to harvest time(RJ)had a negative effect on the percentage of sound seeds per cone.Annual rainfall in the third year prior to harvest time(AR)significantly affected pine nut weight(r:0.889),although rainfall during summer had a negative effect.The empty seed ratio of the different populations ranged from 20 to 68%,while considering all populations,the empty seed ratio was 46%.Conclusions:The study suggests that the Q Index and ME should be taken into account to determine cone to pine nut yield.With this regard,plantations of stone pine should be established on sub-humid areas and Q values should not exceed 75.Safa Balekoglu Servet Caliskan Hüseyin Dirik 2020Ecological Processes2020,9,1:4

7Gluten sensitive enteropathy in patients with iron deficiency anemia of unknown origin显示文摘AIM: To determine the prevalence of gluten sensitive enteropathy (GSE) in a large group of patients with iron deficiency anemia (IDA) of obscure origin. METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, patients with IDA of obscure origin were screened for GSE. Anti- endomysial antibody (EMA) and tissue transglutamin- ase antibody (tTG) levels were evaluated and duodenal biopsies were taken and scored according to the Marsh classification. The diagnosis of GSE was based on a positive serological test and abnormal duodenal histol- ogy. Gluten free diet (GFD) was advised for all the GSE patients. RESULTS: Of the 4120 IDA patients referred to our Hematology departments, 206 (95 male) patients were found to have IDA of obscure origin. Thirty out of 206 patients (14.6%) had GSE. The mean age of GSE pa- tients was 34.6 ± 17.03 (range 10-72 years). The female to male ratio was 1.3:1. Sixteen patients had Marsh 3,12 had Marsh 2, and 2 had Marsh 1 lesions. The sever- ity of anemia was in parallel with the severity of duode- nal lesions. Twenty-two GSE patients (73.3%) had no gastrointestinal symptoms. Fourteen GSE patients who adhered to GFD without receiving iron supplementation agreed to undergo follow up visits. After 6 mo of GFD, their mean hemoglobin levels (Hb) increased from 9.9 ± 1.6 to 12.8 ± 1.0 g/dL (P < 0.01). Interestingly, in 6 out of 14 patients who had Marsh 1/2 lesions (e.g. no villous atrophy) on duodenal biopsy, mean Hb increased from 11.0 ± 1.1 to 13.1 ± 1.0 g/dL (P < 0.01) while they did not receive any iron supplementation. CONCLUSION: There is a high prevalence (e.g. 14.6%) of GSE in patients with IDA of obscure origin. 8Sm-doped CsBr crystal as a new radio-photoluminescence (RPL) material显示文摘Radio-photoluminescence(RPL) is a phenomenon seen in luminescent materials in which the appearance of new photoluminescence(PL) emission is induced by an incident ionizing radiation such as X-rays; and the signal is stable even after the irradiation and during the PL measurement. Since the induced PL intensity is proportional to the irradiation dose, the RPL can be used in radiation measurements. The distinct advantage of RPL over the conventional thermally- or photo-stimulated luminescence(abbreviated as TSL or PSL) dosimeters is the stability of response signal. With an RPL detector, it allows us to readout the signal multiple time without signal fading. In this work, we discovered that CsB r:Sm showed an RPL phenomenon by X-ray irradiation, and we characterized this new material as an RPL detector. While the sample showed PL emissions mainly in the visible range, after an X-ray irradiation additional emissions could be observed in the red to near-infrared range around 650–850 nm and 900–1000 nm and longer. The RPL response was fairly stable overall, but very interestingly the 650–850 nm signal slightly increased while the 900–1000 nm decreased during PL readout. 13A simplified two-dimensional boundary element method with arbitrary uniform mean flow显示文摘To reduce computational costs, an improved form of the frequency domain boundary element method(BEM) is proposed for two-dimensional radiation and propagation acoustic problems in a subsonic uniform flow with arbitrary orientation. The boundary integral equation(BIE) representation solves the two-dimensional convected Helmholtz equation(CHE) and its fundamental solution, which must satisfy a new Sommerfeld radiation condition(SRC) in the physical space. In order to facilitate conventional formulations, the variables of the advanced form are expressed only in terms of the acoustic pressure as well as its normal and tangential derivatives, and their multiplication operators are based on the convected Green's kernel and its modified derivative. The proposed approach significantly reduces the CPU times of classical computational codes for modeling acoustic domains with arbitrary mean flow. 14Changes in physicochemical properties of proteins in Kayserian Pastirma made from the M.semimembranosus muscle of cows during traditional processing显示文摘In the current study,we examined the effects of beef processing to produce pastirma on the physicochemical properties of proteins in M.semimembranosus(SEM)muscle.Protein concentrations significantly increased in pastirma muscles(P<0.01),as a result of the salting and curing process.The surface hydrophobicity values of processed samples were higher than those without processing at all guanidine-HCl concentrations,suggesting hydrophobicity increased,which may attribute to the new generated peptides during the traditional pastirma-making process.The metmyoglobin content greatly increased(by as much as 89%)in pastirma samples compared with the unprocessed samples.The images of histology also demonstrate that the pastirma processing had no negative impact on the structure of the muscle.The results from this study suggest that the traditional pastirma-making process catalyzed the enzymatic digestion of muscle proteins,and the differences in some physicochemical parameters between the control and pastirma samples were thus likely to be contributable to protein digestion.Thus,the traditional pastirma-making process results in the degradation of many proteins into peptides,which might then be obtainable as functional components to treat human dietand lifestyle-related diseases such as hypertension,hyperglycemia syndromes or to be used as nutraceuticals.©2013 Beijing Academy of Food Sciences.Production and hosting by Elsevier B.V.All rights reserved.Abdulatef Mrghni Ahhmed Gen Kaneko Hideki Ushio Tomo Inomata Hasan Yetim Safa Karaman Michio Muguruma Ryoichi Sakata 2013Food Science and Human Wellness2013,2,1:2
