3Importance of intellectual property generated by biomedical research at universities and academic hospitals显示文摘Biomedical research has many different facets.Researchers and clinicians study disease biology and biochemistry to discover novel therapeutic targets,unravel biochemical pathways and identify biomarkers to improve diagnosis,or devise new approaches to clinically manage diseases more effectively.In all instances,the overall goal of biomedical research is to ensure that results thereof(such as a therapy,a device,or a method which may be broadly referred to as“inventions”)are clinically implemented.Most of the researchers’efforts are centered on the advance of technical and scientific aspects of an invention.The development and implementation of an invention can be arduous and very costly.Historically,it has proven to be crucial to protect intellectual property rights(IPR)to an invention(i.e.,a patent)to ensure that companies can obtain a fair return on their investment that is needed to develop an academic invention into a product for the benefit of patients.However,the importance of IPR is not generally acknowledged among researchers at academic institutions active in biomedical research.Therefore this paper aims to(1)raise IP awareness amongst clinical and translational researchers;(2)provide a concise overview of what the patenting trajectory entails;and(3)highlight the importance of patenting for research and the researcher.Importance for patients:Adequate patent protection of inventions generated through biomedical research at academic institutions increases the probability that patients will benefit from these inventions,and indirectly enables the financing of clinical studies,mainly by opening up funding opportunities(e.g.specific grants aimed at start-ups,pre-seed and seed capital)that otherwise would not be accessible.As a consequence,patented inventions are more likely to become clinically tested and reach the market,providing patients with more treatment options.Joris J.Heus Elmar S.de Pauw Mirjam Leloux Margherita Morpurgo Michael R Hamblin Michal Heger 2017Journal of Clinical & Translational Research2017,3,2:3
4Artificial neural network approach for rheological characteristics of coal-water slurry using microwave pre-treatment显示文摘Detailed experimental investigations were carried out for microwave pre-treatment of high ash Indian coal at high power level(900 W) in microwave oven. The microwave exposure times were fixed at60 s and 120 s. A rheology characteristic for microwave pre-treatment of coal-water slurry(CWS) was performed in an online Bohlin viscometer. The non-Newtonian character of the slurry follows the rheological model of Ostwald de Waele. The values of n and k vary from 0.31 to 0.64 and 0.19 to 0.81 Pa·sn,respectively. This paper presents an artificial neural network(ANN) model to predict the effects of operational parameters on apparent viscosity of CWS. A 4-2-1 topology with Levenberg-Marquardt training algorithm(trainlm) was selected as the controlled ANN. Mean squared error(MSE) of 0.002 and coefficient of multiple determinations(R^2) of 0.99 were obtained for the outperforming model. 6PET-modified red mud as catalysts for oxidative desulfurization reactions显示文摘This work describes the synthesis of catalysts based on red mud/polyethylene terephthalate(PET) composites and their subsequent heat treatment under N2 atmosphere.The materials were characterized by scanning electron microscopy(SEM),temperature programmed reduction(TPR),Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FT–IR),X-ray diffraction(XRD),thermogravimetric(TG) analysis and N2adsorption/desorption.The catalysts were evaluated in the oxidative desulfurization reaction of dibenzothiophene(DBT) in a biphasic system.The results indicated that the PET impregnation on red mud increased the affinity of the catalyst with the nonpolar phase(fuel),in which the contaminant was dissolved,allowing a higher conversion(up to 80%) and selectivity to the corresponding dibenzothiophene sulfone.The sulfone compound is more polar than DBT and diffused into the polar solvent as indicated by the data obtained via gas chromatography–mass spectrometry(GC–MS).Nayara T.do Prado Ana P.Heitmann Herman S.Mansur Alexandra A.Mansur Luiz C.A.Oliveira Cinthia S.de Castro 2017Journal of Environmental Sciences2017,29,7:2

12Photolithography by a tunable electro-optical lithium niobate phase array显示文摘Photolithography experiments are performed by means of an optical phase mask with electrooptically tunable phase step. The phase mask consists of a 2-dimensional hexagonal lattice of inverted ferroelectric domains fabricated on a z-cut lithium niobate substrate. The electro-optically tunable phase step, between inverted domain, is obtained by the application of an external electric field along the z axis of the crystal via transparent electrodes. The collimated beam of an argon laser passes through the phase mask and the near field intensity patterns, at different planes of the Talbot length and for different values of the applied voltage, are used for photolithographic experiments.
