| 4 | Antibacterial applications of graphene oxides: structure-activity relationships, molecular initiating events and biosafety显示文摘Bacterial infections may lead to diverse acute or chronic diseases(e.g., inflammation, sepsis and cancer).New antibiotics against bacteria are rarely discovered in recent years, which necessitates the exploration of new antibacterial agents. Engineered nanomaterials(ENMs) have been extensively studied for antibacterial use because of their long lasting killing effects in wide spectra of bacteria. Graphene oxide(GO) is one of the most widely studied ENMs and exhibit strong bactericidal effects. The physicochemical properties of GO play important roles in bacterial killing by triggering a cascade of toxic events. Many studies have explored the signaling pathways of GO in bacteria. Although molecular initiating events(MIEs) of GO in bacteria dominate its killing efficiency as well as toxicity mechanisms, they have been rarely reviewed. In this report, we discussed the structure–activity relationships(SARs) involved in GOinduced bacterial killing and the MIEs including redox reaction with biomolecules, mechanical destruction of membranes and catalysis of extracellular metabolites. | 8 | North Pacific Eastern Subtropical Mode Water simulation and future projection显示文摘The present climate simulation and future projection of the Eastern Subtropical Mode Water(ESTMW) in the North Pacific are investigated based on the Geophysical Fluid Dynamics Laboratory Earth System Model(GFDL-ESM2M). Spatial patterns of the mixed layer depth(MLD) in the eastern subtropical North Pacific and the ESTMW are well simulated using this model. Compared with historical simulation, the ESTMW is produced at lighter isopycnal surfaces and its total volume is decreased in the RCP8.5 runs, because the subduction rate of the ESTMW decreases by 0.82×10-6 m/s during February–March. In addition, it is found that the lateral induction decreasing is approximately four times more than the Ekman pumping, and thus it plays a dominant role in the decreased subduction rate associated with global warming. Moreover, the MLD during February–March is banded shoaling in response to global warming, extending northeastward from the east of the Hawaii Islands(20°N, 155°W) to the west coast of North America(30°N, 125°W), with a maximum shoaling of 50 m, and then leads to the lateral induction reduction. Meanwhile, the increased northeastward surface warm current to the east of Hawaii helps strengthen of the local upper ocean stratification and induces the banded shoaling MLD under warmer climate. | 10 | On the Response of Subduction in the South Pacific to an Intensification of Westerlies and Heat Flux in an Eddy Permitting Ocean Model显示文摘Based on an eddy permitting ocean general circulation model, the response of water masses to two distinct climate scenarios in the South Pacific is assessed in this paper. Under annually repeating atmospheric forcing that is characterized by different westerlies and associated heat flux, the response of Subantarctic Mode Water(SAMW) and Antarctic Intermediate Water(AAIW) is quantitatively estimated. Both SAMW and AAIW are found to be warmer, saltier and denser under intensified westerlies and increased heat loss. The increase in the subduction volume of SAMW and AAIW is about 19.8 Sv(1 Sv =10~6m^3s^(-1)). The lateral induction term plays a dominant role in the changes in the subduction volume due to the deepening of the mixed layer depth(MLD). Furthermore, analysis of the buoyancy budget is used to quantitatively diagnose the reason for the changes in the MLD. | 11 | On the subtropical Northeast Pacific mixed layer depth and its influence on the subduction显示文摘The present climate simulations of the mixed layer depth(MLD) and the subduction rate in the subtropical Northeast Pacific are investigated based on nine of the CMIP5 models. Compared with the observation data,spatial patterns of the MLD and the subduction rate are well simulated in these models. The spatial pattern of the MLD is nonuniform, with a local maximum MLD(>140 m) region centered at(28°N, 135°W) in late winter. The nonuniform MLD pattern causes a strong MLD front on the south of the MLD maximum region, controls the lateral induction rate pattern, and then decides the nonuniform distribution of the subduction rate. Due to the inter-regional difference of the MLD, we divide this area into two regions. The relatively uniform Ekman pumping has little effect on the nonuniform subduction spatial pattern, though it is nearly equal to the lateral induction in values. In the south region, the northward warm Ekman advection(–1.75×10^(–7) K/s) controls the ocean horizontal temperature advection(–0.85×10^(–7) K/s), and prevents the deepening of the MLD. In the ensemble mean, the contribution of the ocean advection to the MLD is about –29.0 m/month, offsetting the sea surface net heat flux contribution(33.9 m/month). While in the north region, the southward cold advection deepens the MLD(21.4 m/month) as similar as the heat flux(30.4 m/month). In conclusion, the nonuniform MLD pattern is dominated by the nonuniform ocean horizontal temperature advection. | 12 | Comparative transcriptome study provides insights into acquisition of embryogenic ability in upland cotton during somatic embryogenesis显示文摘Background: The conversion from non-embryogenic callus(NEC) to embryogenic callus(EC) is the key bottleneck step in regeneration of upland cotton(Gossypium hirsutum), and hinders the transgenic breeding of upland cotton.To investigate molecular mechanisms underlying acquisition of embryogenic potential during this process, comparation analysis of transcriptome dynamics between two upland cotton cultivars with different somatic embryogenesis abilities was conducted.Results: Differentially expressed genes involved in the transformation from NEC to EC were detected in the two different cultivars. Principal component analysis based on DEGs showed that the NEC tissues of the two cultivars were highly heterogeneous, whereas the derived EC tissues were similar, which suggested the homogeneousness of EC between different lines. In the highly embryogenic cultivar CCRI 24, more of these genes were down-regulated, whereas,in the recalcitrant cultivar CCRI 12, more were up-regulated. Bioinformatics analysis on these DEGs showed that the vast majority of differentially expressed genes were enriched in metabolism and secondary metabolites biosynthesis pathways. Flavonoid biosynthesis and phenylpropanoid biosynthesis pathways were enriched in both cultivars,and the associated genes were down-regulated more in CCRI 24 than in CCRI 12. We deduced that vigorous secondary metabolism in CCRI 12 may hinder primary metabolism, resulting in tardiness of cell differentiation.Interestingly, genes involved in the plant hormone signal transduction pathway were enriched in the recalcitrant cultivar CCRI 12 but not in CCRI 24, suggesting more radical regulation of hormone signal transduction in the recalcitrant cultivar. Signal transduction rather than biosynthesis of plant hormones is more likely to be the determining factor triggering NEC to EC transition in recalcitrant cotton lines. Transcription factor encoding genes showed differential regulation between two cultivars.Conclusions: Our study provides valuable information about the molecular mechanism of conversion from NEC to EC in cotton and allows for identification of novel genes involved. | 20 | Formation and Optical Properties of ZnO:ZnFe_(2)O_(4) Superlattice Microwires显示文摘Pure ZnO hexagonal microwires and Fe(Ⅲ)-doped ZnO microwires(MWs)with a novel rectangular cross section were synthesized in a confined chamber by a convenient one-step thermal evaporation method.An oriented attachment mechanism is consistent with a vapor-solid growth process.Photoluminescence(PL)and Raman spectroscopy of the Fe(Ⅲ)-doped ZnO MWs and in situ spectral mappings indicate a quasi-periodic distribution of Fe(Ⅲ)along a one-dimensional(1-D)superlattice ZnO:ZnFe_(2)O_(4) wire,while PL mapping shows the presence of optical multicavities and related multimodes.The PL spectra at room temperature show weak near-edge doublets(376 nm and 383 nm)and a broad band(450-650 nm)composed of strong discrete lines,due to a 1-D photonic crystal structure.Such a 1-D coupled optical cavity material may find many applications in future photonic and spintronic devices. | Yun Li Guozhang Dai Chunjiao Zhou Qinglin Zhang Qiang Wan Limin Fu Jianping Zhang Ruibin Liu Chuanbao Cao Anlian Pan Yunhong Zhang Bingsuo Zou | 2010 | Nano Research2010,3,5: | 2 |
