Research advances on the multiple uses of Moringa oleifera: a sustainable alternative for socially neglected population显示文摘Moringa oleifera Lam(Moringaceae) is a plant with high nutritional and medicinal value. Native to India, it is now widely distributed throughout tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Its different parts are sources of proteins, vitamins and minerals and present different pharmacological and biotechnological potential. Moreover, M. oleifera seeds are widely used in water and effluent treatment, for their coagulation, flocculation and sedimentation properties, their ability of improving water quality, by reducing organic matter and microbial load, with special applicability in intensive animal production systems, such as aquaculture. In addition, due to its high nutritional value and several medicinal properties, this tree may act as a nutritional and medical alternative for socially neglected populations. In this context, this review gathers information on M. oleifera, emphasizing its chemical constituents, nutritional, pharmacological and antimicrobial properties, applications in the treatment of water effluents, and ecological and social aspects.Raimunda Samia Nogueira Brilhante Jamille Alencar Sales Vandbergue Santos Pereira Débora de Souza Collares Maia Castelo-Branco Rossana de Aguiar Cordeiro Célia Maria de Souza Sampaio Manoel de Araújo Neto Paiva Joao Bosco Feitosa dos Santos JoséJúlio CostaSidrim Marcos Fábio Gadelha Rocha 2017Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2017,10,7:10
Acute effects of physical exercise in type 2 diabetes: A review显示文摘The literature has shown the efficiency of exercise in the control of type 2 diabetes(T2D), being suggested as one of the best kinds of non-pharmacological treatments for its population. Thus, the scientific production related to this phenomenon has growing exponentially. However, despite its advances, still there is a lack of studies that have carried out a review on the acute effects of physical exercise on metabolic and hemodynamic markers and possible control mechanisms of these indicators in individuals with T2 D, not to mention that in a related way, these themes have been very little studied today. Therefore, the aim of this study was to organize and analyze the current scientific production about the acute effects of physical exercise on metabolic and hemodynamic markers and possible control mechanisms of these indicators in T2 D individuals. For such, a research with the following keywords was performed:-exercise; diabetes and post-exercise hypotension; diabetes and excess post-exercise oxygen consumption; diabetes and acute effects in PUBMED, SCIELO and HIGHWIRE databases. From the analyzed studies, it is possible to conclude that, a single exercise session can promote an increase in the bioavailability of nitric oxide and elicit decreases in postexercise blood pressure. Furthermore, the metabolic stress from physical exercise can increase the oxidation of carbohydrate during the exercise and keep it, in high levels, the post exercise consumption of O2, this phenomenon increases the rate of fat oxidation during recovery periods after exercise, improves glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity and reduces glycemia between 2-72 h, which seems to be dependent on the exercise intensity and duration of the effort.Ricardo Yukio Asano Marcelo Magalhes Sales Rodrigo Alberto Vieira Browne José Fernando Vila Nova Moraes Hélio José Coelho Júnior Milton Rocha Moraes Hebert Gustavo Simoes 2014World Journal of Diabetes2014,5,5:8
Therapeutic and prophylactic thalidomide in TNBS-induced colitis: Synergistic effects on TNF-α, IL-12 and VEGF production显示文摘AIM: To evaluated the therapeutic and prophylactic effect of thalidomide on 2, 4, 6-trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS)-induced colitis. Thalidomide has been reported to downregulate the expression of tumor necrosis factor a (TNF-α), IL-12, and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), hallmarks of intestinal inflammation in Crohn's disease (CD). METHODS: Male Wistar rats were divided in five groups of ten animals each. Four groups received a rectal infusion of TNBS in ethanol. The first group was sacrificed 7 d after colitis induction. The second and third groups received either thalidomide or placebo by gavage and were sacrificed at 14 d. The fourth group received thalidomide 6 h before TNBS administration, and was sacrificed 7 d after induction. The fifth group acted as the control group and colitis was not induced. Histological inflammatory scores of the colon were performed and lamina propria CD4+ T cells, macrophages, and VEGF+ cells were detected by immunohistochemistry. TNF-a and IL-12 were quantified in the supernatant of organ cultures by ELISA. RESULTS: Significant reduction in the inflammatory score and in the percentage of VEGF+ cells was observed in the group treated with thalidomide compared with animals not treated with thalidomide. Both TNF-αand IL-12 levels were significantly reduced among TNBS induced colitis animals treated with thalidomide compared with animals that did not receive thalidomide. TNF-αlevels were also significantly reduced among the animals receiving thalidomide prophylaxis compared with untreated animals with TNBS-induced colitis. Intestinal levels of TNF-αand IL-12 were significantly correlated with the inflammatory score and the number of VEGF+ cells. CONCLUSION: Thalidomide significantly attenuates TNBS-induced colitis by inhibiting the intestinal production of TNF-α, IL-12, and VEGF. This effect may support the use of thalidomide as an alternate approach in selected patients with CD.Ana Teresa Carvalho Heitor Souza Antonio Jose Carneiro Morgana Castelo-Branco Kalil Madi Alberto Schanaider Flavia Silva Fernando Antonio Pereira Júnior Márcia G Pereira Cláudio Tortori Ilana Dines Jane Carvalho Eduardo Rocha Celeste Elia 2007World Journal of Gastroenterology2007,13,15:6
Benefit of stem cells and skeletal myoblast cells in dilated cardiomyopathies显示文摘Although some authors suggest that there is mitotic division in the heart, most cardiomyocytes do not have the capacity to regenerate after myocardial infarction and when this occurs there is a deterioration of contractile function, and if the area of infarction is extensive ventricular remodeling may occur, leading to the development of heart failure.Cell transplantation into the myocardium with the goal of recovery of cardiac function has been extensively studied in recent years. The effects of cell therapy are based directly on the cell type used and the type of cardiac pathology. For myocardial ischemia in the hibernating myocardium, bone marrow cells have functional benefits, however these results in transmural fibrosis are not evident. In these cases there is a benefit of implantation with skeletal myoblasts, for treating the underlying cause of disease, the loss of cell contractility.Luiz César Guarita-Souza Júlio César Francisco Rossana Simeoni Jose Rocha Faria-Neto Katherine Athayde Teixeira de Carvalho 2011World Journal of Cardiology2011,3,3:4
Quality of life, work productivity impairment and healthcare resources in inflammatory bowel diseases in Brazil显示文摘BACKGROUND Inflammatory bowel diseases(IBD)have been associated with a low quality of life(QoL)and a negative impact on work productivity compared to the general population.Information about disease control,patient-reported outcomes(PROs),treatment patterns and use of healthcare resources is relevant to optimizing IBD management.AIM To describe QoL and work productivity and activity impairment(WPAI),treatment patterns and use of healthcare resources among IBD patients in Brazil.METHODS A multicenter cross-sectional study included adult outpatients who were previously diagnosed with moderate to severe Crohn’s disease(CD)or ulcerative colitis(UC).At enrolment, active CD and UC were defined as having a Harvey Bradshaw Index≥8 or a CD Activity Index≥220 or calprotectin>200μg/g or previous colonoscopy results suggestive of inadequate control(per investigator criteria)and a 9-point partial Mayo score≥5,respectively.The PRO assessment included the QoL questionnaires SF-36 and EQ-5D-5L,the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Questionnaire(IBDQ),and the WPAI questionnaire.Information about healthcare resources and treatment during the previous 3 years was collected from medical records.Chi-square,Fisher’s exact and Student’s t-/Mann-Whitney U tests were used to compare PROs,treatment patterns and the use of healthcare resources by disease activity(α=0.05).RESULTS Of the 407 patients in this study(CD/UC:64.9%/35.1%,mean age 42.9/45.9 years,54.2%/56.6%female,38.3%/37.1%employed),44.7%/25.2%presented moderate-to-severe CD/UC activity, respectively,at baseline.Expressed in median values for CD/UC,respectively,the SF-36 physical component was 46.6/44.7 and the mental component was 45.2/44.2,the EQ-visual analog scale score was 80.0/70.0,and the IBDQ overall score was 164.0/165.0.Moderate to severe activity, female gender, being unemployed,a lower educational level and lower income were associated with lower QoL(P<0.05).Median work productivity impairment was 20%and 5%for CD and UC patients, respectively, and activity impairment was 30%,the latter being higher among patients with moderate to severe disease activity compared to patients with mild or no disease activity(75.0%vs 10.0%,P<0.001).For CD/UC patients,respectively,25.4%/2.8%had at least one surgery,38.3%/19.6%were hospitalized, and 70.7%/77.6%changed IBD treatment at least once during the last 3 years. The most common treatments at baseline were biologics(75.3%)and immunosuppressants(70.9%)for CD patients and 5-ASA compounds(77.5%)for UC patients.CONCLUSION Moderate to severe IBD activity, especially among CD patients,is associated with a substantial impact on QoL,work productivity impairment and an increased number of IBD surgeries and hospitalizations in Brazil.Rogerio Serafim Parra Julio MF Chebli Heda MBS Amarante Cristina Flores Jose ML Parente Odery Ramos Milene Fernandes Jose JR Rocha Marley R Feitosa Omar Feres Antonio S Scotton Rodrigo B Nones Murilo M Lima Cyrla Zaltman Carolina D Goncalves Isabella M Guimaraes Genoile O Santana Ligia Y Sassaki Rogerio S Hossne Mauro Bafutto Roberto LK Junior Mikaell AG Faria Sender J Miszputen Tarcia NF Gomes Wilson R Catapani Anderson A Faria Stella CS Souza Rosana F Caratin Juliana T Senra Maria LA Ferrari 2019World Journal of Gastroenterology2019,25,38:2
Influence of nutritional status in the postoperative period of patients with inflammatory bowel disease显示文摘Inflammatory bowel diseases(IBDs)are a group of chronic inflammatory diseases that affect the gastrointestinal tract, including Crohn's disease(CD)and ulcerative colitis.Surgery is a treatment option, and more than half of the patients with CD will undergo surgical interventions over the course of the disease.Postoperative complications are common in IBD patients, the most frequent being intraabdominal sepsis, infection of the surgical site, and adynamic ileum, and nutritional status is a factor that can influence postoperative outcome.Recent studies have shown that malnutrition, obesity, sarcopenia, and myosteatosis are predictors of surgical complications. However, most were retrospective studies with small patient samples and heterogeneity of clinical and nutritional assessment methods, which limit the extrapolation of data. Therefore, knowing the pathophysiological mechanisms of IBD and identifying the best parameters for assessing nutritional status are essential for prompt implementation of adequate nutritional interventions.Raquel Rocha Geisa de J Santos Genoile Santana 2021World Journal of Gastrointestinal Pharmacology and Therapeutics2021,12,5:2
