| 1 | SEDIMENT TRANSPORTED BY DEBRIS FLOWTO THE LOWER JINSHA RIVER显示文摘The lower Jinsha River is an area with the highest sediment yield in the upper Yangze basin. Itcovers only 9.27% of the total area of the basin but supplies about 40% of the total sediment recordedat the Yichang Hydrological Station. The present study shows that besides strong slope erosion andwaste discharge from engineering works, debris-flow transport is an important source of the sedimentload in the river. | 2 | WATER POLLUTION IN THE RIVER MOUTHS AROUND BOHAI BAY显示文摘Twelve water samples were collected and analyzed. The samples were taken from the river mouths around Bohai Bay including the Jiyun, New Yongding, Haihe, Dagu, Duliujian, Qingjinghuang, Qikou, Dakou, and Yellow Rivers, and tested for concentrations of heavy metals, arsenic, total nitrogen (TN) and total phosphorus (TP). The results show that the river mouths are polluted and the water quality exceeds Class V of the Environmental Quality Standard for Surface Water (EQSSW). The main pollutants are Hg, nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P). The concentrations of the other pollutants are within Class Ⅱ of the Standard. The Hg content in the Haihe River mouth is now 10 times higher than it was 20 years ago, indicating that the accelerating water pollution has reached an alarming level. | 4 | NUMERICAL ANALYSIS OF THE MECHANICS OF SOIL REINFORCEMENT显示文摘Roots affect the soil stress and strain and contribute to soil reinforcement. An analysis of stress and strain in the root-soil composite is presented which combines roots, soils, and an interface element by using the Duncan-Chang E- model and a nonlinear-interface-element model. In this research, a finite element numerical analysis method was applied to simulate the stress field resulting in a composite of Pinus tabulaeformis roots and soils. Results show that roots can transmit the stress from surface soils to deep soils, and can reduce soil stress within the surface soil layer; results also show that the effect of soil reinforcement by roots is limited to surface soils. | 5 | EXPERIMENTAL STUDY ON INCIPIENT MOTION OF SEDIMENT PARTICLES ON GENERALIZED SLOPING FLUVIAL BEDS显示文摘This paper presents an experimental investigation on incipient motion of non-cohesive uniform sediment under a steady-uniform stream flow on generalized sloping fluvial beds (combined lateral and stream-wise slope). The characteristic parameters affecting the incipient motion of sediment particles, identified based on the physical reasoning and dimensional analysis, are the threshold shear stress ratio (ratio of threshold shear stress for sloping bed to that for horizontal bed), lateral slope, stream-wise slope and angle of repose of sediment particles. Experiments were carried out in two ducts (closed-conduit flow) having section of semicircular invert with three types of sediments. In an open channel flow (laboratory flume study), the uniform flow is a difficult, if not impossible, proposition for a steeply sloping channel and is impossible to obtain in an adversely sloping channel. To avoid this problem, the tests were conducted with a closed-conduit flow. | 6 | THREE DIMENSIONAL MATHEMATICAL MODEL OF SEDIMENT TRANSPORT IN ESTUARINE REGIONS-A CASE STUDY OF THE HAIHE RIVER MOUTH显示文摘A 3-D numerical model for simulating tidal flow and sediment transport in the estuarine regions is presented in this paper. The model adopts -coordinate system and carries out -coordinate transformation to the basic equations, which ensure that all horizontal area has equal numbers of calculation points in vertical direction, this method provides higher distinguishable rate to the flow and sediment transport. Under the -coordinate system, the Galerkin finite-element method is applied for horizontal domain by using a new specially interpolating shape functions, while a finite difference approximation is employed over depth. The model can be used even in the situations with a considerable variety in the water depth in the computational domain. The model is verified by a test for which analytical solutions are available and then applied to simulate the tidal current and sediment transport of the Haihe River Mouth. A modeling system of sediment transport is established for applying to muddy estuary of North China. | 8 | EFFECT OF LAND USE CHANGE ON RUNOFFAND SEDIMENT YIELD显示文摘Runoff and sediment yield are greatly affected by the type of land use. The paper studies the influenceof agriculture, husbandry, mining and urban development, demonstrates the law of variation in sedimentyield during the processes of land use changes. Land use changes from forest to agriculture, grassland tofarm field and slope plough land to terrace field exhibit the same law influencing the sediment yield.During the transforming period the sediment yield is higher than those of either land used and is provedto be equal to he sum of the sediment yields of the two types of land use. This is named thesuperposition law of land use transtbrmation. The correlation between the percentage of forest coveragewith the runoff and sediment yields indicates that the runoff yield reduce to the minimum and thesediment yield is nearly zero if the coverage is higher than 60%. Whereas the runoff is doubled andsediment is tripled for 10% reduction in the forest coverage if the coverage is between 30-60%. | 11 | NUMERICAL STUDY ON ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACTS OF THE THIRD SHANGHAI SEWERAGE PROJECT显示文摘Two-dimensional hydrodynamic simulation for the Yangtze Estuary is performed by using the Delft3D model adopting the shallow water equations and the finite volume method on a curvilinear body-fitted grid. The model is calibrated and validated using available tidal data and field measurements. The velocity vector fields, the tidal levels, the trajectories of drogues and the far field sewage dilution from the existing and proposed outfalls are studied for the spring/neap tide and the dry/wet season. The results show that the tidal currents and the runoff flow are able to dilute and disperse the sewage from the outfalls to the outer sea. The sewage dilution contours under various hydrodynamic conditions indicate that the discharged effluent at present have relatively minor impact on the water environment of the Yangtze Estuary; whereas the planned sewage plan would significantly deteriorate the water quality of the estuary in the absence of any treatment, especially during the neap tide of dry season. The drogue tracking shows that the effluent from the four outfalls will be transported downstream to the Hangzhou Bay.
