| 1 | Comparative investigation of coal-and oil-fired boilers based on emission factors,ozone and secondary organic aerosol formation potentials of VOCs显示文摘Volatile organic compounds(VOCs)are the important precursors of the tropospheric ozone(O3)and secondary organic aerosols(SOA),both of which are known to harm human health and disrupt the earth’s climate system.In this study,VOC emission factors,O3 and SOA formation potentials were estimated for two types of industrial boilers:coal-fired boilers(n=3)and oil-fired boilers(n=3).Results showed that EVOCs concentrations were more than nine times higher for oil-fire d boilers compared to those for coal-fired boilers.Emission factors ofΣVOCs were found to be higher for oil-fired boilers(9.26-32.83 mg-VOC/kg)than for coal-fired boilers(1.57-4.13 mg-VOC/kg).Alkanes and aromatics were obtained as the most abundant groups in coal-fired boilers,while oxygenated organics and aromatics were the most contributing groups in oil-fired boilers.Benzene,n-hexane and o-ethyl toluene were the abundant VOC species in coal-fired boiler emissions,whereas toluene was the most abundant VOC species emitted from oil-fired boilers.O3 and SOA formation potentials were found 12 and 18 times,respectively,higher for oil-fired than for coal-fired boilers.Total OFP ranged from 3.99 to 11.39 mg-O3/kg for coal-fired boilers.For oil-fired boilers,total OFP ranged from 36.16 to 131.93 mg-O3/kg.Moreover,total secondary organic aerosol potential(SOAP)ranged from 65.4 to 122.5 mg-SOA/kg and 779.9 to 2252.5 mg-SOA/kg for the coal-fired and oil-fired boilers,respectively. | Hsi-Hsien Yang Sunil Kumar Gupta Narayan Babu Dhital Lin-Chi Wang Suresh Pandian Elumalai | 2020 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2020,32,6: | 6 |

| 3 | Synergistic anticancer effect of green synthesized nickel nanoparticles and quercetin extracted from Ocimum sanctum leaf extract显示文摘Leaf extract of medicinally important plant Ocimum sanctum(O. sanctum) has been used for the synthesis of nickel nanoparticles(Ni Gs) and extraction of quercetin(Qu). Qu has been conjugated with Ni Gs for enhanced anticancer effect on human breast cancer MCF–7 cells. Extracted Qu was conjugated with polyethylene glycol(PEG) coated Ni Gs(Qu–PEG–Ni Gs) which was used as carriers for breast cancer treatment. Anticancer activity of Qu–PEG–Ni Gs was evaluated by assessing cell viability, reactive oxygen species(ROS) production, caspase activity, mitochondrial membrane potential(MMP) and changes in nuclear morphology(staining methods). 0.85 mg of quercetin was extracted from 1 g of leaves with retention time(R_t) of 2.914 min. Loading and encapsulation efficiency of quercetin onto PEG–Ni Gs was 15.04% and 82% respectively and Qu–PEG–Ni Gs has shown a sustained release of Qu of about 84% after 48 h. Qu and Qu–PEG–Ni Gs showed dose dependent(1.56–50 μg/m L) anticancer effect against MCF–7 cells with IC50 values of 50 and 6.25 μg/m L respectively which was mediated by oxidative stress due to ROS over-production that induced loss of mitochondrial membrane potential, capsase-9,-7 activities leading to apoptosis. | 4 | Kopsia Singapurensis提取物对酸性介质中低碳钢的缓蚀效应(英文)显示文摘The influence of the alkaloid extract of Kopsia singapurensis on the corrosion behavior of mild steel (MS) in 1 mol·L-1 HCl and 1 mol·L-1 H2SO4 was studied using electrochemical techniques, viz., potentiodynamic polarization and AC impedance. The experimental results clearly show that the plant extract effectively inhibits corrosion in both acid media and the inhibition efficiency obtained from the electrochemical techniques is in good agreement. Furthermore, the polarization technique indicates that the extract acts as an anodic type inhibitor in HCl and as a mixed type in H2SO4. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was carried out to examine the surface morphological changes of metal specimens in both the inhibited and uninhibited solutions. SEM images show the formation of an adsorbed layer over the metal surface by the inhibitor molecule. | 5 | Emission and performance analysis of a diesel engine burning cashew nut shell oil bio diesel mixed with hexanol显示文摘In this study, the effect of doping hexanol into biodiesel which is from neat cashew nut shell biodiesel oil on the emissions and the performance characteristics was studied in a constant speed diesel engine. The main purpose of this work is to reduce various emissions and also to improve the performance of the diesel engine when fueled with blends of hexanol and neat cashew nut shell biodiesel. Cashew nut shell oil is not edible, and hence it can be used as a viable alternative to diesel.Cashew nut shell biodiesel is prepared by conventional transesterification. Hexanol with 99.2% purity was employed as an oxygenated additive. Experimental studies were conducted by fueling diesel as a baseline and by fueling hexanol and neat cashew nut shell biodiesel mixture. A fuel comprising 10%(by volume) of hexanol and 90%(by volume) neat cashew nut shell biodiesel was referred to as CNSBD900 H100 and fuel comprising 20%(by volume) of hexanol and 80%(by volume)of neat cashew nut shell biodiesel was referred to as CNSBD800 H200. This study also investigated the possibility of using pure biofuel in an unmodified naturally aspirated diesel engine. The outcome of this study showed that adding hexanol at10% and 20%(by volume) to cashew nut shell biodiesel results in a reduction in emissions. In addition, a significant improvement in brake thermal efficiency and reduction in brake-specific fuel consumptions were achieved. | 9 | 褐海藻中硫酸多糖的抗菌和抗氧化活性(英文)显示文摘AIMS: Sulfated polysaccharide extracted from the brown algae Sargassum swartzii was studied for antioxidant potential. METHODS: The extracted sulfated polysaccharide was analyzed for physico-chemical characteristics, TAC, reducing power, free radical scavenging potentials (DPPH, ABTS, H2O2 radical) and antibacterial properties. RESULTS: The extract showed a high percentage of carbohydrate (7.40 ± 0.63) %, followed by sulfate (5.3 ± 1.54) %. The highest antioxidant activity was observed in ABTS (55 ± 3.61) %, followed by H2O2 (47.23 ± 2.81) % and DPPH (25.33 ± 2.52) %; significant differences were observed at (P ≥ 0.05). Among the ten human pathogenic strains tested, E. coli was the more sensitive. The characterization and mobility of the sulfated polysaccharide was examined by the FT-IR spectrum and assayed by agarose gel electrophoresis which showed highest mobility at higher pH buffer in carbonate-bicarbonate (pH 10) buffer. The molecular weight of the sulfated polysaccharide was determined by gradient PAGE and was found to be 50 KDa. Finally, GC-MS analysis revealed the presence of peaks corresponding to dimethyl-4-nitroaniline (26.34%). | 13 | Laparoscopic esophagomyotomy for achalasia in children:Areview显示文摘Esophageal achalasia in children is rare but ultimately requires endoscopic or surgical treatment. Historically, Heller esophagomyotomy has been recommended as the treatment of choice. The refinement of minimally invasive techniques has shifted the trend of treatment toward laparoscopic Heller myotomy(LHM) in adults and children with achalasia. A review of the available literature on LHM performed in patients < 18 years of age was conducted. The pediatric LHM experience is limited to one multiinstitutional and several single-institutional retrospective studies. Available data suggest that LHM is safe and effective. There is a paucity of evidence on the need for and superiority of concurrent antireflux procedures. In addition, a more complete portrayal of complications and long-term(> 5 years) outcomes is needed. Due to the infrequency of achalasia in children, these characteristics are unlikely to be defined without collaboration between multiple pediatric surgery centers.
