3CFD-DEM study of effect of bed thickness for bubbling fluidized beds显示文摘The effect of bed thickness in rectangular fluidized beds is investigated through the CFD-DEM simula- tions of small-scale systems. Numerical results are compared for bubbling fluidized beds of various bed thicknesses with respect to particle packing, bed expansion, bubble behavior, solids velocities, and particle kinetic energy. Good two-dimensional (2D) flow behavior is observed in the bed having a thickness of up to 20 particle diameters. However, a strong three-dimensional (3D) flow behavior is observed in beds with a thickness of 40 particle diameters, indicating the transition from 2D flow to 3D flow within the range of 20-40 particle diameters. Comparison of velocity profiles near the walls and at the center of the bed shows significant impact of the front and back walls on the flow hydrodynamics of pseudo-2D fluidized beds. 4Takotsubo cardiomyopathy:Pathophysiology and role of cardiac biomarkers in differential diagnosis显示文摘Takotsubo cardiomyopathy(TC) is characterized by reversible ventricular dysfunction, not limited to the distribution of an epicardial coronary artery. A disease primarily afflicting post-menopausal women, it is frequently mistaken for acute anterior wall myocardial infarction. Alternatively called Stress Cardiomyopathy, physical or emotional triggers are identified in only three fourths of TC patients. Long considered a benign condition, recent findings suggest poor short term prognosis similar to acute coronary syndrome(ACS). Despite the widely recognized pathophysiological role of catecholamine excess, its diagnostic role is uncertain. TC is suspected based on typical wall motion abnormalities in ventriculogram or echocardiogram. Several additional electrocardiographic, laboratory and imaging parameters have been studied with the goal of clinical diagnosis of TC. While several clinical clues differentiate it from ACS, a clinical diagnosis is often elusive leading to avoidable cardiac catheterizations. Natriuretic peptides(NPs), a family of peptide hormones released primarily in response to myocardial stretch, play a significant role in pathophysiology, diagnosis as well as treatment of congestive heart failure. TC with its prominent ventricular dysfunction is associated with a significant elevation of NPs. NPs are elevated in ACS as well but the degree of elevation is typically lesser than in TC. Markers of myocardial injury such as troponin are usually elevated to a higher degree in ACS than in TC. 7Characterization and bacterial toxicity of lanthanum oxide bulk and nanoparticles显示文摘This study evaluated the bacterial toxicity of lanthanum oxide micron and nano sized particles using shake flask method against gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus) and gram-negative (Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas aeruginosa) bacteria. Particle size, morphology and chemical composition were determined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS). Re-sults indicated that lanthanum oxide nanoparticles showed antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, but not against Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. It was speculated that lanthanum oxide produced this effect by interacting with the gram-positive bacte-rial cell wall. 8WiGig and IEEE 802.11ad for Multi-Gigabyte-Per-Second WPAN and WLAN显示文摘The Wireless Gigabit Alliance (WiGig) and IEEE 802.11ad are developing a multigigabit wireless personal and local area network (WPAN/WLAN) specification in the 60 GHz millimeter wave band. Chipset manufacturers, original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), and telecom companies are also assisting in this development. 60 GHz millimeter wave transmission will scale the speed of WLANs and WPANs to 6.75 Gbit/s over distances less than 10 meters. This technology is the first of its kind and will eliminate the need for cable around personal computers, docking stations, and other consumer electronic devices. High-definition multimedia interface (HDMI), display port, USB 3.0, and peripheral component interconnect express (PCIe) 3.0 cables will all be eliminated. Fast downloads and uploads, wireless sync, and multi-gigabit-per-second WLANs will be possible over shorter distances. 60 GHz millimeter wave supports fast session transfer (FST) protocol, which makes it backward compatible with 5 GHz or 2.4 GHz WLAN so that end users experience the same range as in today's WLANs. IEEE 802.11ad specifies the physical (PHY) sublayer and medium access control (MAC) sublayer of the protocol stack. 9Antineoplastic effects of deoxyelephantopin,a sesquiterpene lactone from Elephantopusscaber, on lung adenocarcinoma (A549) cells显示文摘OBJECTIVE: Deoxyelephantopin, a sesquiterpene lactone from Elephantopus scaber, showed inhibition of the growth of various tumor cells in vitro. In the present study, we investigated the cytotoxicity and apoptosis-inducing capacity of deoxyelephantopin on lung adenocarcinoma (A549) cells. METHODS: The cytotoxic effect of deoxyelephantopin on A549 cells and normal lymphocytes was evaluated using 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay and 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) value was determined. The self-renewal and proliferating potential of A549 cells after treatment with deoxyelephantopin were examined by colony formation assay. Cellular morphology of deoxyelephantopin-treated cells was observed using phasecontrast microscopy. The induction of apoptosis was evaluated using acridine orange and ethidium bromide staining, Hoechst 33342 staining, terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase-mediated dUTP biotin nick end-labeling (TUNEL) assay, DNA fragmentation analysis and Annexin V-fluorescein isothiocyanate staining by flow cytometry. Activation of caspases was detected using fluorogenic substrate specific to caspases 2, 3, 8 and 9 and flow cytometric analysis. The total cellular DNA content and expression of cleaved poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase was also analyzed. RESULTS: Deoxyelephantopin exhibited cytotoxicity to A549 cells (IC50=12.287 μg/mL), however, there was no toxicity towards normal human lymphocytes. Deoxyelephantopin suppressed the colony-forming ability of A549 cells in a dose-dependent manner. Acridine orange, ethidium bromide and Hoechst 33342 staining showed cell shrinkage, chromosomal condensation and nuclear fragmentation, indicating induction of apoptosis. Deoxyelephantopin increased apoptosis of A549 cells, as evidenced by more TUNEL-positive cells. DNA fragmentation and Annexin V staining revealed late-stage apoptotic cell population. Deoxyelephantopin inhibited A549 cell growth by cell cycle arrest at G2/M phase and induced apoptosis through both extrinsic and intrinsic pathways. CONCLUSION: These results suggest that deoxyelephantopin has great potential as a new chemotherapeutic agent to be developed further for the treatment of lung cancer.Farha A. Kabeer Geetha B. 12Sol-Gel Coating with 3-Mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane as Precursor for Corrosion Protection of Aluminium Metal显示文摘Sol—gel coatings offer a number of advantages over other methods of protection for metallic materials.In the present work,3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane(MPTS) was used as the precursor for sol—gel coating on aluminium metal.The gelation of MPTS sol—gel was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy(FT-IR) studies.The formed film was found to be stable up to 350 ℃ as evident from thermogravimetric analysis.X-ray diffraction study and scanning electron microscopy supported the formation of MPTS coating on aluminium surface while the characterization of the coating was done by FT-IR studies.The corrosion inhibition potential of the sol—gel coatings on metal in 3.5%(w/v) of NaCI solution was assessed as a function of different concentrations of MPTS using electrochemical polarization and impedance measurements.The corrosion inhibition efficiency was found to increase with increasing MPTS concentration.The results of the study unravel the use of MPTS as a precursor in the formation of sol—gel coating over aluminium surface so as to protect the metallic surface from corrosion in neutral environment.Rajendran Babhu Vignesh Thomas Nesakumar Jebakumar Immanuel Edison Mathur Gopalakrishnan Sethuraman 2014Journal of Materials Science & Technology2014,30,8:4

17Secondary metabolite credentials ofEvolvulus alsinoides by high performance thin layer chromatography(HPTLC)显示文摘Plants and plant-based products are the bases of many modern pharmaceuticals that are current in use today for various diseases.The aim of the study was to investigate the biochemical constituents and high performance thin layer chromatography(HPTLC) finger printing of the ethanolic extract of Evolvulus alsinoides.Phytochemical screening was done by standard procedures and HPTLC method was also established to analyze alkaloids,flavonoids and phenolic compounds from the ethanolic extract of Evolvulus alsinoides.Preliminary phytochemical screening showed that ethanol extracted more secondary metabolites than other solvents.HPTLC fingerprinting analysis showed the presence of various alkaloids,flavonoids and phenols(quercetin) in the ethanolic extract.It can be concluded that Evolvulus alsinoides may serve as a source of potent antioxidants that may be used in the prevention of various diseases such as cancer,diabetes and cardiovascular diseases due to the presence of phenolic compounds.HPTLC finger print of Evolvulus alsinoides may be useful in the differentiation of the species from adulterants and act as a biochemical marker for this medicinally important plant in the pharmaceutical industry and plant systematic studies.Duraisamy Gomathi Manokaran Kalaiselvi Ganesan Ravikumar Dominic Sophia Velliyur Kanniappan Gopalakrishnan Chandrasekar Uma 2012The Journal of Biomedical Research2012,26,4:2
18Evaluation of geochemical behavior and heavy metal distribution of sediments:The case study of the Tirumalairajan river estuary,southeast coast of India显示文摘The purpose of this study was to assess the chemical partitioning of selected heavy metals(Fe,Mn,Cu,Zn,Pb,Cr,Co and Ni) in 10 surface sediments at Tirumalairajan River Estuary in the southeastern coast of India.A five-step sequential extraction technique was used to assess the environmental status of heavy metals.Most of metals were considered to be immobile due to the high availability in the residual fraction of heavy metals.The sediments of Tirumalairajan River estuary had not been polluted by heavy metals,and they didn't pose any high ecological risk.The seasonal variations of heavy metals were slightly higher in summer than in monsoon season.Factor analysis was also carned out to understand the associations of metals in different fractions with sand,silt,clay,organic matter,pH,salinity and other metals.The relationship between the Q-mode and R-mode cluster analyses was useful for identifying the pollution levels in both seasons.It was proved that the enrichment of heavy metals was related with geogenic and anthropogenic sources.The information on total metal concentrations in sediments was not sufficient for assessing the metal behavior in the environment,but the sequential extraction technique was more effective in estimating the environmental impact of contaminated sediments.Senapathi VENKATRAMANAN Sang-yong CHUNG Thirunavukkarasu RAMKUMAR Gopalakrishnan GNANACHANDRASAMY Tae Hyung KIM 2015International Journal of Sediment Research2015,30,1:2

20Ameliorative effect of alkaloid extract of Cyclea peltata(Poir.) Hook.f.& Thoms.roots(ACP) on APAP/CC1_4 induced liver toxicity in Wistar rats and in vitro free radical scavenging property显示文摘Objective:To evaluate the hepatoprotective and antioxidant properties of alkaloid extract of Cyclea peltata(C.peltata) against paracetamol/carbon tetra chloride induced liver damage in Wistar rats.Methods:In viro paracetamol/carbon tetrachloride induced liver damage in Wistar rats,in vitro free radical scavenging studies,HPTLC estimation of letrandrine and direct analysis in real timemass spectrometry of alkaloid extract of C.peltata were used for the validation.Results:The results showed that pretreatment with alkaloid extract of C.peltata caused significant reduction of serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase,serum glutamate oxaloacetate transaminase,serum alkaline phosphatase,serum cholesterol,liver malondialdehyde levels.The reduced glutathione,catalase,superoxide dismutase levels in liver were increased with alkaloid extract of C.peltata treatment.These results were almost comparable to silymarin and normal control.Histopathological studies also substantiated the biochemical findings.The in vitro hydroxyl,superoxide and DPPH scavenging study of alkaloid extract of C. peltata showed significant free radical scavenging property.Conclusions:The hepatoprotective property of alkaloid extract of C.peltata against paracetamol/carbon tetrachloride may be due the synergistic action of alkaloids especially tetrandrine,fangchinoline through free radical scavenging and thus preventing oxidative stress.Varghese Jancy Shine Panikamparambil Gopalakrishnan Latha Somasckharan Nair Rajam Suja Gangadharan Indira Anuja Gopan Raj Sreedharan Nair Rajasekharan 2014Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine2014,4,2:2
