| 1 | H pylori iceA alleles are disease-specific virulence factors显示文摘AIM: To characterize and compare genotype profiles of H pylori strains isolated from patients with chronic gastritis and duodenal ulcer in western part of Turkey. METHODS: A total of 46 patients [30 chronic gastritis (CG) and 16 duodenal ulcer (DU)] who had undergone endoscopy because of dyspeptic complaints were studied. The antral biopsy specimens were evaluated for the presence of H pylori by rapid urease test and culture, and the genotype profiles were determined by real-time PCR. RESULTS: The cagA gene was observed in 43 (93.5%) isolates. The vacA s1m2 genotype was the predominant subtype, found in 63.3% and 68.7% of isolates in patients with CG and DU, respectively. Twenty (66.6%) isolates from patients with CG were iceA2 positive while the iceA1 was predominant in those with DU (68.8%). In terms of the association of the iceA alleles to other genes, both alleles were significantly associated with the cagA vacA s1m2 genotype. CONCLUSION: The prevalent circulating genotypes in CG and DU were cagA vacA s1m2 iceA2 and cagA vacA s1m2 iceA1 genotype, respectively. | 2 | Prognostic role of sensitive-to-apoptosis gene expression in rectal cancer显示文摘AIM:To investigate the association between prognosis of rectal cancer treated with chemoradiotherapy(CRT) and expression of sensitive-to-apoptosis(SAG),B-cell lymphoma-extra large(Bcl-X L) and Bcl-2 homologous antagonist/killer(Bak).METHODS:Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction was used to determine the expression of proteins of interest,namely SAG,Bcl-X L,Bak and β-actin,in rectal carcinoma patients who had a follow-up period of 3 years after CRT.Biopsy specimens were excised from the rectal tumor preceding CRT.RESULTS:SAG,Bcl-X L and Bak proteins showed significant correlations with each other.In multivariate analysis,patients with high vs low SAG expression showed a statistically significant difference in 2-year survival rates:56% vs 73%,respectively(P = 0.056).On the other hand,there were no significant correlations between the expression levels of all three genes and metastatic rates or tumor responses to CRT.Mean overall survival in the patients with elevated SAG expression was 27.1 mo ± 3.9 mo [95% confidence interval(CI):19.3-34.9],and in patients with reduced expression,it was 32.1 mo ± 2.5 mo(95% CI:27.3-36.9).The corresponding values for Bcl-X L were 28.0 mo ± 4.1 mo(95% CI:19.9-36.1) and 31.7 mo ± 2.9 mo(95% CI:26.0-37.5),and those for Bak were 29.8 mo ± 3.7 mo(95% CI:22.5-37.2) and 30.6 mo ± 2.4 mo(95% CI:25.5-35.0),respectively.CONCLUSION:Two-year survival rates significantly correlated with low SAG expression,and SAG may be a candidate gene for good prognosis,independent of therapeutic response of different individuals. | Sevgi A Ozden Hazan Ozyurt Zerrin Ozgen Olca Kilinc Mustafa Oncel Aylin E Gul Nimet Karadayi Nedime Serakinci Beki Kan Oya Orun | 2011 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2011，17，44： | 6 |
| 3 | Efficacy and safety of pegylated-interferon α-2a in hemodialysis patients with chronic hepatitis C显示文摘AIM: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of pegylated-interferon alpha-2a in hemodialysis patients with chronichepatitis C.METHODS: Thirty-six hemodialysis patients with chronichepatitis C were enrolled in a controlled and prospectivestudy. All patients were treatment naive, positivetested for anti-HCV antibodies, and positive tested forserum HCV-RNA. Twenty-two patients received 135 μgpeglyated-interferon a-2a weekly for 48 wk (group A).The remaining patients were left untreated, elevenrefused therapy, and three were not candidates forkidney transplantation and were allocated to the controlgroup (group B). At the end of the treatment biochemicaland virological response was evaluated, and 24 wk aftercompletetion of therapy sustained virological response(SVR) was assessed. Side effects were monitored.RESULTS: Of 22 hemodialysis patients, 12 were maleand 10 female, with a mean age of 35.2 ± 12.1 years.Virological end-of-treatment response was observed in14 patients (82.4%) in group A and in one patient (7.1%)in group B (P = 0.001). Sustained virological responsewas observed in 11 patients (64.7%) in group A and inone patient in group B (7.1%). Biochemical responseparameters normalized in 10/14 patients (71.4%) at theend of the treatment. ALT levels in group B were initiallyhigh in six patients and normalized in one of them (25%)at the end of the 48 wk. In five patients (22.7%) therapyhad to be stopped at mo 4 due to complications ofweakness, anemia, and bleeding.CONCLUSION: SVR could be achieved in 64.7% ofpatients on hemodialysis with chronic hepatitis C by atreatment with peglyated-interferon a-2a. | 5 | Effect of diluted povidone iodine in adenoviral keratoconjunctivitis on the rate of subepithelial corneal infiltrates显示文摘AIM: To evaluate the clinical characteristics of adenoviral keratoconjunctivitis, the management modalities, as well as the incidence of subepithelial corneal infiltrates(SEI).METHODS: Patients with characteristic clinical symptoms and signs, who presented to our clinic within the first week of symptoms and received the diagnosis of adenoviral keratoconjunctivitis between January 2013 and April 2016, were included in the study. A total of 211 patients were included in the study. Patients were evaluated for the incidence of clinical signs, late complications, management preferences, and the effect of diluted povidone-iodine(d-PVP-I) 2%. RESULTS: Patients’ mean age was 33.03±14.76 y. We observed an increase in the number of cases according to the years. At presentation and/or early follow-up, the clinical signs were conjunctival hyperemia(100%), conjunctival follicules(79.1%), edema of the eyelids(39.3%), chemosis(16.1%), pseudomembrane formation(16.6%), and corneal epitheliopathy(29.9%). During late follow-up 13.3% patients developed conjunctival subepithelial fibrosis, and 39.8% developed SEI. A significant decrease in the incidence of SEI development was observed in patients who used d-PVP-I 2%(P=0.032;33.3% vs 45.9%, respectively in patients who received d-PVP-I 2% and who did not).CONCLUSION: Adenoviral keratoconjunctivitis has a tremendous effect on patient’s comfort and abilities in short-term. Additionally, almost half of the patients develop visual problems related to SEI.
