| 1 | Management of ruptured hepatocellular carcinoma:Implications for therapy显示文摘AIM:To assess the treatment and tumor-related variables associated with outcome after treatment of spontaneously ruptured hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC).METHODS: Patients with ruptured HCC were identif ied. The complications, mortality and survival were assessed. The relationship between tumor size and the severity of hemoperitoneum and between tumor size and grade were examined.RESULTS: From January 1993 to January 2008, 556 patients with HCC with or without cirrhosis were evaluated; of which, 16 (2.87%) presented with spontaneous rupture. All but 1 patient had cirrhosis. Twelve patients underwent surgical resection while 4 underwent trans-cutaneous arterial catheter embolization (TAE) (trans-cutaneous arterial embolization). Early mortality (<30 d) was 25% (4 of 16) and was inversely relatedto Child-Pugh score; 3 of the 4 early deaths occurred in patients treated with TAE with 1 of 12 occurring in the resected group. There was no correlation between tumor size and grade or between size and severity of hemoperitoneum.CONCLUSION: Tumor size did not correlate with severity of the hemoperitoneum. | 4 | Essential hypertension and oxidative stress:New insights显示文摘Essential hypertension is a highly prevalent pathological condition that is considered as one of the most relevant cardiovascular risk factors and is an important cause of morbidity and mortality around the world. Despite the fact that mechanisms underlying hypertension are not yet fully elucidated,a large amount of evidence shows that oxidative stress plays a central role in its pathophysiology. Oxidative stress can be defined as an imbalance between oxidant agents,such as superoxide anion,and antioxidant molecules,and leads to a decrease in nitric oxide bioavailability,which is the main factor responsible for maintaining the vascular tone. Several vasoconstrictor peptides,such as angiotensin Ⅱ,endothelin-1 and urotensin Ⅱ,act through their receptors to stimulate the production of reactive oxygen species,by activating enzymes like NADPH oxidase andxanthine oxidase. The knowledge of the mechanism described above has allowed generating new therapeutic strategies against hypertension based on the use of antioxidants agents,including vitamin C and E,N-Acetylcysteine,polyphenols and selenium,among others. These substances have different therapeutic targets,but all represent antioxidant reinforcement. Several clinical trials using antioxidants have been made. | 5 | The timing of bowel preparation before colonoscopy determines the quality of cleansing,and is a significant factor contributing to the detection of flat lesions:A randomized study显示文摘AIM: To compare the cleansing quality of polyethylene glycol electrolyte solution and sodium phosphate with different schedules of administration, and to evaluate whether the timing of the administration of bowel preparation affects the detection of polyps. METHODS: One hundred and seventy-seven consecutive outpatients scheduled for colonoscopy were randomized in one of four groups to receive polyethylene glycol electrolyte solution or oral sodium phosphate with two different timing schedules. Quality of cleansing, polyp detection, and tolerance were evaluated. RESULTS: Patients receiving polyethylene glycol or sodium phosphate on the same day as the colonoscopy, obtained good to excellent global cleansing scores more frequently than patients who received polyethylene glycol or sodium phosphate on the day prior to the procedure (P < 0.001). Flat lesions, but not flat adenomas, were more frequent in patients prepared on the same day (P = 0.02). | 6 | Bowel cleansing before colonoscopy:Balancing efficacy,safety,cost and patient tolerance显示文摘Effective colorectal cancer screening relies on reliable colonoscopy findings which are themselves dependent on adequate bowel cleansing. Research has consistently demonstrated that inadequate bowel preparation adversely affects the adenoma detection rate and leads gastroenterologists to recommend earlier follow up than is consistent with published guidelines. Poor preparation affects as many as 30% of colonoscopies and contributes to an increased cost of colonoscopies. Patient tolerability is strongly affected by the preparation chosen and manner in which it is administered. Poor tolerability is,in turn,associated with lower quality bowel preparations. Recently,several new developments in both agents being used for bowel preparation and in the timing of administration have brought endoscopists closer to achieving the goal of effective,reliable,safe,and tolerable regimens. Historically,large volume preparations given in a single dose were administered to patients in order to achieve adequate bowel cleansing. These were poorly tolerated,and the unpleasant taste of and significant side effects produced by these large volume regimens contributed significantly to patients' inability to reliably complete the preparation and to a reluctance to repeat the procedure. | 9 | Biosorption of cadmium(II) and lead(II) ions from aqueous solutions onto dried activated sludge显示文摘The removal of heavy-metal ions from aqueous solutions by using dried activated sludge has been investigated in batch systems. Effect of solution pH, initial metal ion concentration, and temperature were determined. The results of the kinetic studies showed that the uptake processes of the two metal ions(Cd(II) and Pb(II)) followed the pseudo-second-order rate expression. The equi- librium data fitted very well to both the Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption models. | 10 | Response evaluation of chemotherapy in metastatic colorectal cancer by contrast enhanced ultrasound显示文摘AIM:To evaluate whether contrast enhanced ultrasound(CEUS) might also be used for response prediction and early response evaluation in patients receiving bevacizumab based chemotherapy for metastasized colorectal cancer.METHODS:Thirty consecutive patients with non primary resectable liver metastases from colorectal cancer underwent CEUS before treatment(CEUS date 1) and before the second(CEUS date 2) and fourth(CEUS date 3) cycle of bevacizumab based chemotherapy.Three parameters [PEAK,Time to peak(TTP) and RISE RATE]were correlated with radiological response.RESULTS:For neoadjuvant purpose a reduction of tumour mass was required to assume clinical response.Based on these response criteria there was a significant(P < 0.001) correlation in TTP between metastases of responders(9.08 s) and non-responders(14.76 s) archived on CEUS date 1.By calculating a standardized quotient(metastases divided by normal liver tissue) we were able to define a cut off,predicting response with a sensitivity of 92.3 % and a specificity of 100 %.To reflect a palliative intention only those patients with progressive disease were classified as non-responders.In this stetting TTP was also significantly(P < 0.01) different between responders and non-responders.In contrast,Peak and Rise rate did not show any significant difference between responder and non-responder.CONCLUSION:CEUS might serve as a surrogate marker to predict treatment response in patients with metastasized colorectal cancer who receive antiangiogenic therapy. | Ramin Schirin-Sokhan Ron Winograd Christoph Roderburg Jhenee Bubenzer Nicole Cabral do ó Dorothee Guggenberger Hartmut Hecker Christian Trautwein Jens J W Tischendorf | 2012 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2012,18,6: | 16 |

| 13 | Feedstock choice,pyrolysis temperature and type influence biochar characteristics:a comprehensive meta-data analysis review显示文摘Various studies have established that feedstock choice,pyrolysis temperature,and pyrolysis type influence final biochar physicochemical characteristics.However,overarching analyses of pre-biochar creation choices and correlations to biochar characteristics are severely lacking.Thus,the objective of this work was to help researchers,biochar-stakeholders,and practitioners make more well-informed choices in terms of how these three major parameters influence the final biochar product.Utilizing approximately 5400 peer-reviewed journal articles and over 50,800 individual data points,herein we elucidate the selections that influence final biochar physical and chemical properties,total nutrient content,and perhaps more importantly tools one can use to predict biochar’s nutrient availability.Based on the large dataset collected,it appears that pyrolysis type(fast or slow)plays a minor role in biochar physico-(inorganic)chemical characteristics;few differences were evident between production styles.Pyrolysis temperature,however,affects biochar’s longevity,with pyrolysis temperatures>500℃ generally leading to longer-term(i.e.,>1000 years)half-lives.Greater pyrolysis temperatures also led to biochars containing greater overall C and specific surface area(SSA),which could promote soil physico-chemical improvements.However,based on the collected data,it appears that feedstock selection has the largest influence on biochar properties.Specific surface area is greatest in wood-based biochars,which in combination with pyrolysis temperature could likely promote greater changes in soil physical characteristics over other feedstock-based biochars.Crop-and other grass-based biochars appear to have cation exchange capacities greater than other biochars,which in combination with pyrolysis temperature could potentially lead to longer-term changes in soil nutrient retention.The collected data also suggest that one can reasonably predict the availability of various biochar nutrients(e.g.,N,P,K,Ca,Mg,Fe,and Cu)based on feedstock choice and total nutrient content.Results can be used to create designer biochars to help solve environmental issues and supply a variety of plant-available nutrients for crop growth. | James A.Ippolito Liqiang Cui Claudia Kammann Nicole Wrage‑Mönnig Jose MEstavillo Teresa Fuertes‑Mendizabal Maria Luz Cayuela Gilbert Sigua Jeff Novak Kurt Spokas Nils Borchard | 2020 | Biochar2020,2,4: | 13 |

| 17 | Exploring the Transcriptome Landscape of Pomegranate Fruit Peel for Natural Product Biosynthetic Gene and SSR Marker Discovery显示文摘Pomegranate fruit peel is rich in bioactive plant natural products,such as hydrolyzable tannins and anthocyanins.Despite their documented roles in human nutrition and fruit quality,genes involved in natural product biosynthesis have not been cloned from pomegranate and very little sequence information is available on pomegranate in the public domain.Shotgun transcriptome sequencing of pomegranate fruit peel cDNA was performed using RNA-Seq on the Illumina Genome Analyzer platform.Over 100 million raw sequence reads were obtained and assembled into 9,839 transcriptome assemblies (TAs) (>200 bp).Candidate genes for hydrolyzable tannin,anthocyanin,flavonoid,terpenoid and fatty acid biosynthesis and/or regulation were identified.Three lipid transfer proteins were obtained that may contribute to the previously reported IgE reactivity of pomegranate fruit extracts.In addition,115 SSR markers were identified from the pomegranate fruit peel transcriptome and primers were designed for 77 SSR markers.The pomegranate fruit peel transcriptome set provides a valuable platform for natural product biosynthetic gene and SSR marker discovery in pomegranate.This work also demonstrates that next-generation transcriptome sequencing is an economical and effective approach for investigating natural product biosynthesis,identifying genes controlling important agronomic traits,and discovering molecular markers in non-model specialty crop species. | Nadia Nicole Ono Monica Therese Britton Joseph Nathaniel Fass Charles Meyer Nicolet Dawei Lin Li Tian | 2011 | Journal of Integrative Plant Biology2011,53,10: | 12 |

Children with autism spectrum disorder(ASD) show decreased fundamental movement skills in comparison with their typically developing(TD) peers and might benefit from this approach. This pilot study investigates whether playing sports AVGs can increase the actual and perceived object control(OC) skills of 11 children with ASD aged 6–10 years in comparison to 19 TD children of a similar age.Feasibility was a secondary aim.Methods: Actual(Test of Gross Motor Development) and perceived OC skills(Pictorial Scale of Perceived Movement Skill Competence for Young Children) were assessed before and after the intervention(6 × 45 min).Results: Actual skill scores were not improved in either group. The ASD group improved in perceived skill. All children completed the required dose and parents reported the intervention was feasible.Conclusion: The use of AVGs as a play-based intervention may not provide enough opportunity for children to perform the correct movement patterns to influence skill. | 20 | Transforming growth factor-β1 induces intestinal myofibroblast differentiation and modulates their migration显示文摘AIM:To investigate the effects of transforming growth factorβ1(TGF-β1)on the differentiation of colonic lamina propria fibroblasts(CLPF)into myofibroblasts in vitro. METHODS:Primary CLPF cultures were incubated with TGF-β1 and analyzed for production ofα-smooth muscle actin(α-SMA),fibronectin(FN)and FN isoforms.Migration assays were performed in a modified 48-well Boyden chamber.Levels of total and phosphorylated focal adhesion kinase(FAK)in CLPF were analyzed after induction of migration.RESULTS:Incubation of CLPF with TGF-β1 for 2 d did not changeα-SMA levels,while TGF-β1 treatment for 6 d significantly increasedα-SMA production. Short term incubation(6 h)with TGF-β1 enhanced CLPF migration,while long term treatment(6 d)of CLPF with TGF-β1 reduced migration to 15%-37% compared to untreated cells.FN and FN isoform mRNA expression were increased after short term incubation with TGF-β1(2 d)in contrast to long term incubation with TGF-β1 for 6 d.After induction of migration, TGF-β1-preincubated CLPF showed higher amounts of FN and its isoforms and lower levels of total and phosphorylated FAK than untreated cells.
