Protective effect of naringenin on acetic acid-induced ulcerative colitis in rats显示文摘AIM:To evaluate the ameliorative effect of naringenin(NG)during ulcerative colitis(UC)in rats.METHODS:Rats were treated with three different doses(25,50 and 100 mg/kg per day)of NG and a single dose of mesalazine(MES,300 mg/kg per day)for seven days prior to ulcerative colitis induction by4%acetic acid(AA).Twenty four hours after AA rectal administration, animals were scarified and the colonic tissues were dissected.Colonic mucus content was estimated using Alcian blue dye binding technique. In colon tissues, levels of total glutathione sulphadryls(T-GSH),non-protein sulphadryls(NP-SH)and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances(TBARS)were evaluated. The activities of the antioxidant enzymes, catalase(CAT)and superoxide dismutase(SOD)were measured.Concentrations of nucleic acids(DNA and RNA)and total protein were also estimated in colon tissues.Colonic levels of tumor necrosis factor-(TNF-),interleukin-1(IL-1),interleukin-6(IL-6),prostaglandin E2(PGE2)and nitric oxide(NO)were estimated. In cross section of colitis tissue the histopathological changes were observed.RESULTS:Colonic mucus content was decreased in AA compared to controls(587.09±65.59 mg/kg vs941.78±68.41 mg/kg,P<0.001).AA administration markedly reduced T-GSH(5.25±0.37 nmol/L vs 3.04±0.24 nmol/L,P<0.01),NP-SH(3.16±0.04 nmol/L vs 2.16±0.30 nmol/L,P<0.01),CAT(6.77±0.40 U/mg vs 3.04±0.2 U/mg,P<0.01)and SOD(3.10±0.11U/mg vs 1.77±0.18 U/mg,P<0.01)while TBARS,TNF-,IL-1,IL-6,PGE2 and NO levels(15.09±3.84nmol/L vs 59.90±16.34 nmol/L,P<0.01;113.56±1.91 pg/mg vs 134.24±4.77 pg/mg,P<0.01;209.20±36.38 pg/mg vs 422.19±31.47 pg/mg,P<0.01;250.83±25.09 pg/mg vs 638.58±115.9 pg/mg,P<0.01;248.19±36.98 pg/mg vs 541.74±58.34 pg/mg,P<0.01 and 81.26±2.98 mmol/g vs 101.90±10.73 mmol/g,P<0.001)were increased in colon of rats with UC compared controls respectively.Naringenin supplementation, significantly and dose dependently increased the colonic mucus content. The elevated TBARS levels were significantly decreased(39.35±5.86nmol/L,P<0.05;26.74±3.17 nmol/L,P<0.01 nmol/L and 17.74±2.69 nmol/L,P<0.01)compared to AA(59.90±16.34 nmol/L)group while the decreased levels of T-GSH and NP-SH and activities of CAT and SOD found increased by NG treatments in dose dependent manner. The decreased values of nucleic acids and total protein in AA group were also significantly(P<0.01)increased in all three NG supplemented groupsrespectively.NG pretreatment inhibited the TNF-levels(123.76±3.76 pg/mg,122.62±3.41 pg/mg and121.51±2.61 pg/mg vs 134.24±4.78 pg/mg,P<0.05)compared to AA group,respectively.Interleukins,IL-1 and IL-6 levels were also decreased in NG50+AA(314.37±16.31 pg/mg and 292.58±23.68 pg/mg,P<0.05)and NG100+AA(416.72±49.62 pg/mg and 407.96±43.87 pg/mg,P<0.05)when compared to AA(352.46±8.58 pg/mg and 638.58±115.98pg/mg)group.Similar decrease(P<0.05)was seen in PGE2and NO values when compared to AA group. The group pretreated with MES,as a reference drug, showed significant(P<0.01)protection against the changes induced in colon tissue by AA administration respectively.CONCLUSION:In present study,NG produced antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects demonstrating protective effect in inflammatory bowel disease. | Salim S Al-Rejaie Hatem M Abuohashish Maher M Al-Enazi Abdullah H Al-Assaf Mihir Y Parmar Mohammed M Ahmed | 2013 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2013,19,34: | 20
Kinetic adsorption of application of carbon nanotubes for Pb(Ⅱ) removal from aqueous solution显示文摘The capability of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to adsorb lead (Pb) in aqueous solution was investigated. Batch mode adsorption experiment was conducted to determine the effects of pH, agitation speed, CNTs dosage and contact time. The removal of Pb(Ⅱ) reached maximum value 85% or 83% at pH 5 or 40 mg/L of CNTs, respectively. Higher correlation coeffcients from Langmuir isotherm model indicates the strong adsorptions of Pb(Ⅱ) on the surface of CNTs (adsorption capacity Xm = 102.04 mg/g). The results indicates that the highest percentage removal of Pb (96.03%) can be achieved at pH 5, 40 mg/L of CNTs, contact time 80 min, and agitation speed 50 r/min. | Nassereldeen A Kabbashi Muataz A Atieh Abdullah Al-Mamun Mohamed E S Mirghami MD Z Alam Noorahayu Yahya | 2009 | Journal of Environmental Sciences2009,21,4: | 15

Role of ZnO-CeO_2 Nanostructures as a Photo-catalyst and Chemi-sensor显示文摘ZnO-CeO2 nanostructures were synthesized by simple and effcient low temperature method. The structure and morphology of the ZnO-CeO2 nanostructures were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), which revealed elongated shaped CeO2 nanoparticles with diameters of 40-90 nm distributed on the surface of elongated ZnO nanostructures with diameters of 50-200 nm (edge-centre). Further the structure of the synthesized ZnO-CeO2 nanostructure was supported by Raman spectra and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). UV-vis absorption spectrum was used to confirm the optical properties of the CeO2 doped ZnO nanostructures. Photo-catalytic activity of CeO2 doped ZnO nanostructure was evaluated by degradation of acridine orange and methylene blue which degraded 84.55% and 48.65% in 170 min, respectively. ZnO-CeO2 nanostructures also showed good sensitivity (0.8331 μA·cm-2·(mol/l)-1) in short response time (10 s) by applying to chemical sensing using ethanol as a target compound by I-V technique. These degradation and chemical sensing properties of ZnO-CeO2 nanostructures are of great importance for the application of ZnO-CeO2 system as a photo-catalyst and chemical sensor. | M. | 6 | Viral hepatitis prevalence in patients with active and latent tuberculosis显示文摘AIM: To assess the prevalence of hepatitis B virus(HBV) and hepatitis C virus(HCV) infection and association with drug induced liver injury(DILI) in patients undergoing anti-tuberculosis(TB) therapy.METHODS: Four hundred and twenty nine patients with newly diagnosed TB- either active disease or latent infection- who were due to commence antiTB therapy between September 2008 and May 2011 were included. These patients were prospectively tested for serological markers of HBV, HCV and human immunodeficiency virus(HIV) infections- hepatitis B core antigen(HBc Ag), hepatitis B surface antigen(HBs Ag), hepatitis B e antigen, Ig G and Ig M antibody to HBc Ag(anti-HBc), HCV Ig G antibody and HIV antibody using a combination of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay, Western blot assay and polymerase chain reaction techniques. Patients were reviewed at least monthly during the TB treatment initiation phase. Liver function tests were measured prior to commencement of antiTB therapy and 2-4 wk later. Liver function tests were also performed at any time the patient had significant nausea, vomiting, rash, or felt non-specifically unwell. Fisher's exact test was used to measure significance in comparisons of proportions between groups. A P value of less than 0.05 was considered statistically significant.RESULTS: Of the 429 patients, 270(62.9%) had active TB disease and 159(37.1%) had latent TB infection. 61(14.2%) patients had isolated anti-HBc positivity, 11(2.6%) were also HBs Ag positive and 7(1.6%) were HCV-antibody positive. 16/270 patients with active TB disease compared to 2/159 patients with latent TB infection had markers of chronic viral hepatitis(HBs Ag or HCV antibody positive; P = 0.023). Similarly the proportion of HBs Ag positive patients were significantly greater in the active vs latent TB infection group(10/43 vs 1/29, P = 0.04). The prevalence of chronic HBV or HCV was significantly higher than the estimated United Kingdom prevalence of 0.3% for each. We found no association between DILI and presence of serological markers of HBV or HCV. Three(5.3%) patients with serological markers of HBV or HCV infection had DILI compared to 25(9.5%) patients without; P = 0.04.CONCLUSION: Viral hepatitis screening should be considered in TB patients. DILI risk was not increased in patients with HBV/HCV. | Hesam Ahmadi Nooredinvand David W Connell Mahmoud Asgheddi Mohammed Abdullah Marie O'Donoghue Louise Campbell Melissa I Wickremasinghe Ajit Lalvani Onn Min Kon Shahid A Khan | 2015 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2015,21,29: | 7

Phytochemical analysis and antioxidant profile of methanolic extract of seed, pulp and peel of Baccaurea ramiflora Lour.显示文摘Objective: To analyze the phytochemical constituents responsible for the plausible antioxidant effect of methanolic extract of the seed, pulp and peel of Baccaurea ramiflora Lour. Methods: Fresh seed, pulp, and peel of Baccaurea ramiflora fruits were extracted with methanol(MEBRse, MEBRpu, MEBRpe) and evaluated by phytochemical analysis for their content of innumerable metabolites(primary and secondary) viz. carbohydrates, alkaloids, glycosides, tannins, phenols, terpenoids, flavonoids, proteins, and fixed oils. The antioxidant efficacy was assessed through different assay methods viz. 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl(DPPH) free radical scavenging activity, total antioxidant capacity(TAC) and reducing power capacity(RPC). Estimation of total phenolic content(TPC), and total flavonoid content(TFC) was also done to confirm the presence of these phytochemicals. Results: It was revealed from the phytochemical analysis of MEBRse that alkaloids, glycosides, carbohydrates, phenols, and flavonoids were present, while that of MEBRpu showed the existence of carbohydrates, proteins, alkaloids, glycosides, phenols, saponins, flavonoids, and fixed oils. Presence of carbohydrates, alkaloids, phenols, tannins, flavonoids, and terpenoids were found in the MEBRpe. A significant antioxidant activity was revealed by the MEBRpu [EC_(50):(27.612 ± 1.375) μg/mL], compared to MEBRpe, and MEBRse in DPPH assay. The ranking order for RPC was MEBRpu > MEBRpe > MEBRse respectively. The EC_(50) value of TAC of the MEBRpu, MEBRpe, and MEBRse were(25.107 ±0.744) μg/mL,(241.127 ± 7.463) μg/mL and(372.364 ± 11.030) μg/mL, respectively. Quantity of TPC and TFC were the highest in the MEBRpu(124.360 ± 2.078 mg GAE/g and 107.527 ±1.900 mg QRE/g extract) rather than MEBRpe and MEBRse extracts. Conclusions: This study suggests that MEBRpu has a significantly higher antioxidant property than MEBRpe and MEBRse. These extracts might be advantageous in prevention or decelerating the progress of different diseases related to oxidative-stress/damage. Moreover, detailed analysis of these extracts is required to identify the presence of promising compound(s) responsible for their antioxidant activity. | Md.Sahab Uddin Md.Sarwar Hossain Abdullah Al Mamun Devesh Tewari Md.Asaduzzaman Md.Siddiqul Islam Mohamed M.Abdel-Daim | 2018 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2018,11,7: | 3
Interaction of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide with drug in aqueous/electrolyte solution:A combined conductometric and molecular dynamics method study显示文摘Interaction between beta-lactum antibiotic drug ciprofloxacin hydrochloride(CFH)and cationic surfactant cetyltrimethylammonium bromide(CTAB)was performed conductometrically in aqueous as well as in the occurrence of different salts(NaCl,KCl as well as NH_4Cl)over the temperature range of 298.15–323.15 K at the regular interval of 5 K.CFH drug has been suggested for the treatment of bacterial infections such as urinary tract infections and acute sinusitis.A clear critical micelle concentration(CMC)was obtained for pure CTAB as well as(CFH+CTAB)mixed systems. The decrease in CMC values of CTAB caused by the addition of CFH reveals the existence of the interaction between the components and therefore it is the indication of micelle formation at lower concentration of CTAB and their CMC values further decrease in attendance of salts.A nonlinear behavior in the CMC versus T plot was observed in all the cases. The ΔG_m^0 values are found to be negative in present study systems demonstrated the stability of the solution. The values of ΔH_m^0 and ΔS_m^0 reveal the existence of hydrophobic and electrostatic interactions between CFH and CTAB.The thermodynamic properties of transfer for the micellization were also evaluated and discussed in detail.Molecular dynamic simulation disclosed that environment of water and salts have impact on the hydrophobic interaction between CFH and CTAB.In water and salts,CTAB adopts spherical micelle in which charged hydrophilic groups are interacted with waters whereas hydrophobic tails form the core of the micelle. This hydrophobic core region is highly conserved and protected. In addition, micelle formation is more favorable in aqueous Na Cl solution than other solutions. | Md.Anamul Hoque Md.Masud Alam Mohammad Robel Molla Shahed Rana Malik Abdul Rub Mohammad A.Halim Mohammed Abdullah Khan Farida Akhtar | 2018 | Chinese Journal of Chemical Engineering2018,26,1: | 3
Glutathione (GSH) improves sperm quality and testicular morphology in streptozotocin-induced diabetic mice显示文摘Diabetes mellitus(DM)is known to cause reproductive impairment. In men,it has been linked to altered sperm quality and testicular damage.Oxidative stress(OS)plays a pivotal role in the development of DM complications.Glutathione(GSH)is a part of a nonenzymatic antioxidant defense system that protects lipid, protein, and nucleic acids from oxidative damage. However, the protective effects of exogenous GSH on the male reproductive system have not been comprehensively examined. This study determined the impact of GSH supplementation in ameliorating the adverse effect of type 1 DM on sperm quality and the seminiferous tubules of diabetic C57BL/6NTac mice.GSH at the doses of 15 mg kg^(-1)and 30 mg kg^(-1)was given intraperitoneally to mice weekly for 6 consecutive weeks. The mice were then weighed, euthanized, and had their reproductive organs excised. The diabetic(D Group)showed significant impairment of sperm quality and testicular histology compared with the nondiabetic(ND Group).Diameters of the seminiferous lumen in diabetic mice treated with 15 mg kg^(-1) GSH(DGSH15)were decreased compared with the D Group.Sperm motility was also significantly increased in the DGSH15 Group.Improvement in testicular morphology might be an early indication of the protective roles played by the exogenous GSH in protecting sperm quality from effects of untreated type 1 DM or diabetic complications.Further investigation using different doses and different routes of GSH is necessary to confirm this suggestion. | Fathiah Abdullah Mohamed Noor Khan Nor-Ashikin Renu Agarwal Yuhaniza Shafinie Kamsani Mastura Abd Malek Nor Salmah Bakar Aqila-Akmal Mohammad Kamal Mimi-Sophia Sarbandi Nor-Shahida Abdul Rahman Nurul Huda Musa | 2021 | Asian Journal of Andrology2021,23,3: | 3
Improvement of geotechnical properties of sabkha soil utilizing cement kiln dust显示文摘Improvement of properties of weak soils in terms of strength, durability and cost is the key from engineering point of view. The weak soils could be stabilized using mechanical and/or chemical methods.Agents added during chemical stabilization could improve the engineering properties of treated soils.Stabilizers utilized have to satisfy noticeable performance, durability, low price, and can be easily implemented.Since cement kiln dust(CKD) is industrial by-product,it would be a noble task if this waste material could be utilized for stabilization of sabkha soil. This study investigates the feasibility of utilizing CKD for improving the properties of sabkha soil.Soil samples are prepared with 2% cement and 10%,20% or 30% CKD and are tested to determine their unconfined compressive strength(UCS),soaked California bearing ratio(CBR) and durability.Mechanism of stabilization is studied utilizing advanced techniques, such as the scanning electron microscope(SEM),energy dispersive X-ray analysis(EDX),backscattered electron image(BEI) and X-ray diffraction analysis(XRD).It is noted that the sabkha soil mixed with 2% cement and 30% CKD could be used as a sub-base material in rigid pavements. The incorporation of CKD leads to technical and economic benefits. | Abdullah A.Al-Homidy Mohammed H.Dahim Ahmed K.Abd El Aal | 2017 | Journal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering2017,9,4: | 3
Families of Sordariomycetes显示文摘Sordariomycetes is one of the largest classes of Ascomycota that comprises a highly diverse range of fungi characterized mainly by perithecial ascomata and inoperculate unitunicate asci. The class includes many important plant pathogens,as well as endophytes, saprobes, epiphytes, coprophilous and fungicolous, lichenized or lichenicolous taxa. They occur in terrestrial, freshwater and marine habitats worldwide. This paper reviews the 107 families of the class Sordariomycetes and provides a modified backbone tree based on phylogenetic analysis of four combined loci, with a maximum five representative taxa from each family, where available. This paper brings together for the first time, since Barrs’1990 Prodromus, descriptions, notes on the history, and plates or illustrations of type or representative taxa of each family,a list of accepted genera, including asexual genera and a key to these taxa of Sordariomycetes.Delineation of taxa is supported where possible by molecular data. The outline is based on literature to the end of 2015 and the Sordariomycetes now comprises six subclasses,32 orders,105 families and 1331 genera. The family Obryzaceae and Pleurotremataceae are excluded from the class. | Sajeewa S.N.Maharachchikumbura Kevin D.Hyde E.B.Gareth Jones E.H.C.McKenzie Jayarama D.Bhat Monika C.Dayarathne Shi-Ke Huang Chada Norphanphoun Indunil C.Senanayake Rekhani H.Perera Qiu-Ju Shang Yuanpin Xiao Melvina J.D’souza Sinang Hongsanan Ruvishika S.Jayawardena Dinushani A.Daranagama Sirinapa Konta Ishani D.Goonasekara Wen-Ying Zhuang Rajesh Jeewon Alan J.L.Phillips Mohamed A.Abdel-Wahab Abdullah M.Al-Sadi Ali H.Bahkali Saranyaphat Boonmee Nattawut Boonyuen Ratchadawan Cheewangkoon Asha J.Dissanayake Jichuan Kang Qi-Rui Li Jian Kui Liu Xing Zhong Liu Zuo-Yi Liu JJennifer Luangsa-ard Ka-Lai Pang Rungtiwa Phookamsak Itthayakorn Promputtha Satinee Suetrong Marc Stadler Tingchi Wen Nalin N.Wijayawardene | 2016 | Fungal Diversity2016,,4: | 3
Effects of stand characteristics on tree species richness in and around a conservation area of northeast Bangladesh显示文摘We investigated the effect of tree cover, forest patch and disturbances on tree species richness in a highly diverse conservation area of northeast Bangladesh.A systematic sampling protocol was adopted and 80 sub-plots from twenty five 1 ha plots were used for the vegetation survey.Linear regression analysis was performed to understand the effect of patch area, disturbances and tree cover on tree species richness.Ordination using Redundancy analysis(RDA) and Non-metric Multi Dimensional Scaling(NMDS) were also performed to explore the tree species compositional similarities along the stand characteristics gradient and locations of the sample plots. Our study revealed that, forest patch size has greater influence on species richness.Areas with medium level of disturbances have shown greater species richness. In constrained ordination the selected explanatory variables regulated the richness of common species. Our findings can be useful for better forest management and restoration of landscapes of conservation needs using ecologically important species. | Muha Abdullah Al PAVEL SharifA.MUKUL Mohammad Belal UDDIN Kazuhiro HARADA Mohammed A.S.ARFIN KHAN | 2016 | Journal of Mountain Science2016,13,6: | 2
Dengue epidemiology and pathogenesis:images of the future viewed through a mirror of the past显示文摘Every year, millions of individuals throughout the world are seriously affected by dengue virus. The unavailability of a vaccine and of anti-viral drugs has made this mosquito-borne disease a serious health concern. Not only does dengue cause fatalities but it also has a profoundly negative economic impact. In recent decades, extensive research has been performed on epidemiology, vector biology, life cycle, pathogenesis, vaccine development and prevention. Although dengue research is still not at a stage to suggest definite hopes of a cure, encouraging significant advances have provided remarkable progress in the fight against infection. | 17 | Hydraulic and volume change behaviors of compacted highly expansive soil under cyclic wetting and drying显示文摘The wide engineered application of compacted expansive soils necessitates understanding their behavior under field conditions. The results of this study demonstrate how seasonal climatic variation and stress and boundary conditions individually or collectively influence the hydraulic and volume change behavior of compacted highly expansive soils. The cyclic wetting and drying(CWD)process was applied for two boundary conditions,i.e.constant stress(CS)and constant volume(CV),and for a wide range of axial stress states. The adopted CWD process affected the hydraulic and volume change behaviors of expansive soils, with the first cycle of wetting and drying being the most effective. The CWD process under CS conditions resulted in shrinkage accumulation and reduction in saturated hydraulic conductivity(k sat).On the other hand,CWD under CV conditions caused a reduction of swell pressure while has almost no impact on k sat.An elastic response to CWD was achieved after the third cycle for saturated hydraulic conductivity(k sat),the third to fourth cycle for the volume change potential under the CV conditions, and the fourth to fifth cycle for the volume change potential under the CS conditions. Finally, both swell pressure(s s)and saturated hydraulic conductivity(k sat)are not fundamental parameters of the expansive soil but rather depend on stress, boundary and wetting conditions. | Mohamed Farid Abbas Abdullah Ali Shaker Mosleh A.Al-Shamrani | 2023 | Journal of Rock Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering2023,15,2: | 2

Markov Chain Modelling of Reliability Analysis and Prediction under Mixed Mode Loading显示文摘The reliability assessment for an automobile crankshaft provides an important understanding in dealing with the design life of the component in order to eliminate or reduce the likelihood of failure and safety risks. The failures of the crankshafts are considered as a catastrophic failure that leads towards a severe failure of the engine block and its other connecting subcomponents. The reliability of an automotive crankshaft under mixed mode loading using the Markov Chain Model is studied. The Markov Chain is modelled by using a two-state condition to represent the bending and torsion loads that would occur on the crankshaft. The automotive crankshaft represents a good case study of a component under mixed mode loading due to the rotating bending and torsion stresses. An estimation of the Weibull shape parameter is used to obtain the probability density function, cumulative distribution function, hazard and reliability rate functions, the bathtub curve and the mean time to failure. The various properties of the shape parameter is used to model the failure characteristic through the bathtub curve is shown.Likewise,an understanding of the patterns posed by the hazard rate onto the component can be used to improve the design and increase the life cycle based on the reliability and dependability of the component. The proposed reliability assessment provides an accurate, efficient, fast and cost effective reliability analysis in contrast to costly and lengthy experimental techniques. | SINGH Salvinder ABDULLAH Shahrum NIK MOHAMED Nik Abdullah MOHD NOORANI Mohd Salmi | 2015 | Chinese Journal of Mechanical Engineering2015,28,2: | 2
Broad bandwidth SOA-based multiwavelength laser incorporating a bidirectional Lyot filter显示文摘We demonstrate a broad bandwidth multiwavelength laser based on a bidirectional Lyot filter and a semiconductor optical amplifier with a mechanism of intensity-dependent loss as the flatness agent. A wide bandwidth of a multiwavelength spectrum of 32.9 nm within a 5 dB uniformity is obtained under optimized polarization parameters. For this case, the number of generated lasing lines is 329 with a fixed wavelength separation of 0.1 nm. The power stability of this multiwavelength laser is less than 1.35 dB within 200 min time frame. This shows that the bidirectional Lyot filter provides an alternative option for multiwavelength generation in laser systems. | Abdul Hadi Sulaiman Muhammad Zamzuri Abdul Kadir Nelidya Md Yusoff Noran Azizan Cholan Fairuz Abdullah Ahmad Fauzi Abas Mohammed Thamer Alresheedi Mohd Adzir Mahdi | 2018 | Chinese Optics Letters2018,16,9: | 2
