| 1 | Split liver transplantation: Current developments显示文摘In 1988, Rudolf Pichlmayr pioneered split liver transplantation(SLT), enabling the transplantation of one donor liver into two recipients-one pediatric and one adult patient. In the same year, Henri Bismuth and colleagues performed the first full right/full left split procedure with two adult recipients. Both splitting techniques were rapidly adopted within the transplant community. However, a SLT is technically demanding, may cause increased perioperative complications, and may potentially transform an excellent deceased donor organ into two marginal quality grafts. Thus, crucial evaluation of donor organs suitable for splitting and careful screening of potential SLT recipients is warranted. Furthermore, the logistic background of the splitting procedure as well as the organ allocation policy must be adapted to further increase the number and the safety of SLT. Under defined circumstances, in selected patients and at experienced transplant centers, SLT outcomes can be similar to those obtained in full organ LT. Thus, SLT is an important tool to reduce the donor organ shortage and waitlist mortality, especially for pediatric patients and small adults. | 3 | Grazing effects on herbage nutritive values depend on precipitation and growing season in Inner Mongolian grassland显示文摘Aims Grasslands are widely used for production of livestock,which depend on the nutritive value of herbage species.However,there are still large uncertainties as to how grazing,precipitation and growing season interactively affect herbage nutritive value.Methods Here,based on a grazing experiment with seven grazing intensities in an Inner Mongolian grassland since the year 2005,we analysed nutritive value of four dominant grass species from June to September in both a relatively wetter year(2008)and a drier year(2010).Herbage with high nutritive value is characterized by high concentration of crude protein,high concentration of cellulase digestible organic matter and low concentration of neutral detergent fibre.Important Findings We found that(i)grazing significantly increased the nutritive value of Leymus chinensis,Agropyron michnoi and Cleistogenes squarrosa but had minor effects on the nutritive value of Stipa grandis.(ii)For all species,nutritive values were greater in the wetter year than in the drier year and were greatest in the early growing season(June)and lowest at the end of the growing season(September).Inter-annual and inter-seasonal variations in nutritive value were much greater for L.chinensis and A.michnoi than for C.squarrosa and S.grandis,suggesting higher water use efficiency for the latter two species.(iii)Grazing significantly decreased the drought resistance of three species,but not of S.grandis.(iv)Grazing significantly increased inter-month variation in nutritive value for L.chinensis and A.michnoi but had relatively minor or no effects on that of C.squarrosa and S.grandis.Therefore,grazing effects on species nutritive values showed strong inter-annual and seasonal patterns,and species-specific responses might be related to species traits(i.e.water use efficiency,digestibility).Our results have important implications for ecosystem management of arid and semiarid grasslands under intense grazing and global climatic change. | Haiyan Ren Guodong Han Zhichun Lan Hongwei Wan Philipp Schönbach Martin Gierus Friedhelm Taube | 2016 | Journal of Plant Ecology2016,9,6: | 14 |

| 5 | Current developments in pediatric liver transplantation显示文摘In 1953, the pioneer of human orthotopic liver transplantation(LT), Thomas E Starzl, was the first to attempt an orthotopic liver transplant into a 3 years old patient suffering from biliary atresia. Thus, the first LT in humans was attempted in a disease, which, up until today, remains the main indication for pediatric LT(p LT). During the last sixty years, refinements in diagnostics and surgical technique, the introduction of new immunosuppressive medications and improvements in perioperative pediatric care have established LT as routine procedure for childhood acute and chronic liver failure as well as inherited liver diseases. In contrast to adult recipients, p LT differs greatly in indications for LT, allocation practice, surgical technique, immunosuppression and postoperative life-long aftercare. Many aspects are focus of ongoing preclinical and clinical research. | 9 | Liver transplantation for malignancy:current treatment strategies and future perspectives显示文摘In 1967,Starzl et al performed the first successful liver transplantation for a patient diagnosed with hepatoblastoma.In the following,liver transplantation was considered ideal for complete tumor resection and potential cure from primary hepatic malignancies.Several reports of liver transplantation for primary and metastatic liver cancer however showed disappointing results and the strategy was soon dismissed.In1996,Mazzaferro et al introduced the Milan criteria,offering liver transplantation to patients diagnosed with limited hepatocellular carcinoma.Since then,liver transplantation for malignant disease is an ongoing subject of preclinical and clinical research.In this context,several aspects must be considered:(1)Given the shortage of deceased-donor organs,long-term overall and disease free survival should be comparable with results obtained in patients transplanted for nonmalignant disease;(2)In this regard,living-donor liver transplantation may in selected patients help to solve the ethical dilemma of optimal individual patient treatment vs organ allocation justice;and(3)Ongoing research focusing on perioperative therapy and antiproliferative immunosuppressive regimens may further reduce tumor recurrence in patients transplanted for malignant disease and thus improve overall survival.The present review gives an overview of current indications and future perspectives of liver transplantation for malignant disease. | Christina Hackl Hans J Schlitt Gabriele I Kirchner Birgit Knoppke Martin Loss | 2014 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2014,20,18: | 7 |

| 13 | Discrete particle modeling of granular temperature distribution in a bubbling fluidized bed显示文摘The discrete hard sphere particle model (DPM) is applied in this work to study numerically the distributions of particle and bubble granular temperatures in a bubbling fluidized bed. The dimensions of the bed and other parameters are set to correspond to those of Müller et al. (2008). Various drag models and operational parameters are investigated to find their influence on particle and bubble granular temperatures. Various inlet superficial gas velocities are used in this work to obtain their effect on flow characteristics. It is found that the superficial gas velocity has the most important effect on granular temperatures including bubble granular temperature, particle translational granular temperature and particle rotational granular temperature. The drag force model affects more seriously the large scale variables such as the bubble granular temperature. Restitution coefficient influences all granular temperatures to some degree. Simulation results are compared with experimental results by Müller et al. | 15 | Role of soluble factors and three-dimensional culture in in vitro differentiation of intestinal macrophages显示文摘AIM: To examine the factor(s) involved in differentiation of intestinal macrophages (IMACs) using a recently established in vitro model. METHODS: To test whether soluble or membrane bound factors induce IMAC-differentiation, freshly elutriated monocytes (MO) were incubated with conditioned media or cell membranes of intestinal epithelial cells (IEC) or cultured with IEC in transwell systems. To determine the importance of an active migration of MO, three- dimensional aggregates from a 1:1-mixture of MO and IEC were examined by immunohistochemistry and flow cytometry. Apoptosis was examined by caspase-3 Western blots. Extracellular matrix production in differentiation models was compared by immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: IMAC differentiation was observed in a complex three-dimensional co-culture model (multicellular spheroid, MCS) with IEC after migration of MO into the spheroids. By co-culture of MO with conditioned media or membrane preparations of IEC no IMAC differentiation was induced. Co-culture of MO with IEC in transwell- cultures, with the two cell populations separated by a membrane also did not result in intestinal-like differentiation of MO. In contrast to IEC-spheroids with immigrating MO in mixed MCS of IEC and MO only a small subpopulation of MO was able to survive the seven day culture period. | 16 | Emerging pollutants in the environment:A challenge for water resource management显示文摘A significant number of emerging pollutants(EPs)resulting from point and diffuse pollution is present in the aquatic environment.These are chemicals that are not commonly monitored but have the potential to enter the environment and cause adverse ecological and human health effects.According to the NORMAN network,at least 700 substances categorized into 20 classes,have been identified in the European aquatic environment.In light of their potential impact action is urgently required.In this study,we present a concept that shows the current state of art and challenges for monitoring programs,fate and risk assessment tools and requirements for policies with respect to emerging pollutants as a base for sustainable water resource management.Currently,methods for sampling and analysis are not harmonized,being typically focused on certain EP classes.For a number of known highly hazardous EPs detection limits are too high to allow proper risk assessment.For other EPs such as microplastics method development is in its infancy.Advanced ultra-sensitive instrumental techniques should be used for quantitative determination of prioritized EPs in water,suspended matter,soil and biota.Data on EPs'and their metabolites'properties that determine their fate in the environment are often not available.National surveys on water quality often use different parameters for water quality assessment and often do not include EPs.A harmonized monitoring of surface and groundwater is not yet achieved and urgently required.Specific component integrated into models assessing the fate of EPs in a multi compartment environmental approach are missing and must be developed.The main goal of risk assessment is the overall protection of ecological communities in the aquatic environment and human health.New methods for assessing the cumulative risks from combined exposures to several stressors,including mixtures of EPs in a multi-scale approach are required.A combination of regulations and management measures with respect to use/emissions of EPs into the environment,as well as to their occurrence in the environment are fundamental to reach an efficient water resource management. | Violette Geissen Hans Mol Erwin Klumpp Günter Umlauf Marti Nadal Martine van der Ploeg Sjoerd E.A.T.M.van de Zee Coen J.Ritsema | 2015 | International Soil and Water Conservation Research2015,3,1: | 3 |
