| 1 | New eolian red clay sequence on the western Chinese Loess Plateau linked to onset of Asian desertification about 25 Ma ago显示文摘The expansion of inland Asia deserts has considerably influenced the environmental, social and economic activities in Asia. Aridification of inland Asia, especially timing of the initiation of Asian desertification, is a contentious topic in paleoclimatology. Late Cenozoic eolian loess-red clay sequences on the Chinese Loess Plateau, which possess abundant paleoclimatic and paleo-environmental information, can be regarded as an indicator of inland Asia desertification. Here we present a detailed magnetostratigraphic investigation of a new red clay sequence about 654 m in Zhuanglang located at the western Chinese Loess Plateau. Sedimentological, geochemical, mineralogical, and quartz morphological lines of evidence show that the red clay is of eolian origin. Magnetostratigraphic correlations indicate that this core sequence spans from 25.6 to 4.8 Ma, and typical eolian red clay appears as early as 25 Ma. This extends the lower limit of the red clay on the Chinese Loess Plateau from the previously thought early Miocene back into the late Oligocene. This new red clay record further implies that the inland Asia desertification was initiated at least by the late Oligocene. | 2 | Review of research in internal-wave and internal-tide deposits of China显示文摘Study of internal-wave and internal-tide deposits is a very young research field in deep-water sedimentology. It has been just twenty years since the first example of internal-wave and internal-tide deposits was identified in the stratigraphic record. Since that time, Chinese scholars have made unremitting efforts and gained some significant research achievements in this field. This paper briefly outlines the history and main achievements of research of internal-wave and internal-tide deposits in China, describes depositional charac-teristics, sedimentary successions, types of lithofacies, and depositional models of internal-wave and internal-tide deposits identified mainly from ancient strata, and summarizes the existing problems in this research field. New advances in marine physics should be applied to research of the subject of internal-wave and internal-tide deposition, whereas the sedimentary characteristics of internal-wave and internal-tide deposits may be used to deduce the physical processes of their creation. | 3 | Application of Avaatech X-ray fluorescence core-scanning in Sr/Ca analysis of speleothems显示文摘Application of X-ray fluorescence core-scanning(XRF-CS) on both marine and lake sediments has achieved remarkable results. However, its application has not been widely extended to the research on speleothems. In this study, we measure the Sr abundance and the Sr/Ca ratios of three stalagmites(two aragonite stalagmites, one calcite stalagmite) using the state-of-the-art fourth-generation Avaatech high-resolution XRF core scanner. Through comparisons among different scan paths and among different scan resolutions, as well as comparisons with inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometer(ICP-OES), Itrax XRF, and Artax XRF results, we confirm that the Avaatech XRF core scanner could precisely, quickly, and nondestructively analyze the high-resolution Sr abundance of speleothems. | 4 | Effects of Silver Nanoparticles on Soil Microbial Communities and Bacterial Nitrification in Suburban Vegetable Soils显示文摘Silver nanoparticles(AgNPs) are widely used antimicrobial compounds; however, they may pose a threat to non-targeted bacteria in the environment. In this study high-throughput sequencing was used to investigate the effects of different concentrations of AgNPs(10, 50, and 100 mg kg-1) on soil microbial community structure during short-term(7 d) exposure. The amounts of Acidobacteria,Actinobacteria, Cyanobacteria, and Nitrospirae significantly decreased with increasing AgNP concentration; meanwhile, several other phyla(e.g., Proteobacteria and Planctomycetes) increased and dominated. Nitrosomonas europaea, a well-characterized ammoniaoxidizing bacterium, was used to study the sensitivity of bacteria to Ag NPs and ionic silver(Ag^+). Flow cytometry was used to monitor the toxicity of low(1 mg L^(-1)), middle(10 mg L^(-1)), and high concentrations(20 mg L^(-1)) of AgNPs, as well as Ag^+(1 mg L^(-1)) released into the medium from 20 mg L^(-1) concentration of AgNPs, towards N. europaea. After 12 h of exposure, the survival rate of N. europaea treated with 1 mg L^(-1)Ag^+ was significantly lower than those treated with low(1 mg L^(-1)) and middle concentrations(10 mg L^(-1)) of AgNPs, but the survival rate in the treatment with high concentration(20 mg L^(-1)) of AgNPs was much lower. Additionally, necrosis rates were higher in the treatment with 20 mg L^(-1) AgNPs. | 13 | Assessment of Effect of Angiotensin Ⅱ Receptor Antagonist Losartan on Aortic Distensibility in Patients With Essential Hypertension by Echocardiography显示文摘Summary: The effects of angiotensin Ⅱ receptor antagonist losartan on elastic properties of aorta in patients with mild to moderate essential hypertension were assessed. The ascending aortic distensibility in 26 patients (48±3 years) with mild to moderate essential hypertension before and after 12 weeks of treatment with losartan (50 mg/day) was evaluated by using two-dimensional echocardiography. M-mode measurements of aortic systolic (D s) and diastolic diameter (D d) were taken at a level approximately 3 cm above the aortic valve. Simultaneously, cuff brachial artery systolic (SBP) and diastolic(DBP) pressures were measured. Aortic pressure-strain elastic modulus (E p) was calculated as D d×(SBP-DBP)/(D s-D d)×1333 and stiffness index beta (β) was defined as D d×Ln (SBP/DBP)/(D s-D d). Blood pressure significantly decreased from 148±13/95±9 mmHg to 138±12/88±8 mmHg (systolic blood pressure, P=0.001; diastolic blood pressure, P=0.003). There was no significant difference in pulse pressure before and after treatment with losartan (53±10 mmHg vs 50±7 mmHg). The distensibility of ascending aorta increased significantly as showed by the significant decrease in pressure-strain elastic modulus from 4.42±5.79×10 6 dynes/cm 2 to 1.99±1.49×10 6 dynes/cm 2 (P=0.02) and stiffness index beta from 27.4±32.9 to 13.3±9.9 (P=0.02). Although there was a weak correlation between the percent changes in pressure-strain elastic modulus and stiffness index beta and that in diastolic blood pressure after losartan treatment(r=0.40, P=0.04 and r=0.55, P=0.004, respectively), no correlation was found between the percent changes in pressure-strain elastic modulus and stiffness index beta and that in systolic blood pressure (r=0.04, P=0.8 and r=0.24, P=0.2, respectively). | 17 | Impacts of silver nanoparticles on enzymatic activities,nitrifying bacteria,and nitrogen transformation in soil amended with ammonium and nitrate显示文摘Silver nanoparticles(AgNPs)are effective antimicrobial compounds that are used in a myriad of applications.Soil microorganisms play crucial roles in nitrogen cycling,but there is a lack of comprehensive understanding of the effects of Ag NPs on enzymatic activity in the nitrogen cycle,nitrifying bacteria,and nitrogen transformation in soil.Herein,enzyme activities were determined following the addition of different forms of nitrogen,ammonium nitrogen((NH_(4))_(2)SO_(4)),nitrate nitrogen(KNO_(3)),and amide nitrogen(urea,CO(NH_(2))_(2))at 200 mg N kg^(-1),into the soil amended with AgNPs at 0,10,50,and 100 mg kg^(-1).After 7 d of incubation with 10 mg kg^(-1) Ag NPs,the activities of urease,nitrite reductase(NiR),nitrate reductase(NaR),and hydroxylamine reductase(HyR)were reduced by 12.5%,25.0%,12.2%,and 24.2%,respectively.Of particular note,more than 53.5%,61.7%,and 34.7% of Na R,NiR,and HyR activities,respectively,were inhibited at 100 mg kg^(-1) Ag NPs.The abundance(most probable number)of ammonia-and nitrite-oxidizing bacteria(AOB and NOB,respectively)was measured using real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction(qPCR)and the Cochran method.The abundance of AOB and NOB decreased when Ag NPs were present in the soil.The NH_(4)NO_(3) amendment increased copy numbers of bacterial and archaeal amo A nitrification functional genes,by 38.3% and 12.4%,respectively,but AgNPs at 50 mg kg^(-1) decreased these values by 70% and 56.4%,respectively.The results of ^(15)N enrichment(atom% excess)of NH_(4)^(+) and NO_(3)^(-) experiments illustrated the influence of AgNPs on soil nitrogen transformation.According to the ^(15)N atom% excess detected,the conversion of ^(15)N-labeled NH_(4)^(+) to NO_(3)^(-) was significantly inhibited by the different levels of Ag NPs in soil.The reduced gross nitrification rate further confirmed this finding.Overall,this study revealed considerable evidence that AgNPs inhibited nitrogen cycle enzyme activity,the number of nitrifying bacteria,the abundance of the amo A gene,and the gross nitrification rate.Silver nanoparticles inhibited nitrogen transformation,and the rate of nitrification was also negatively correlated with AgNP levels. | Xiaohong LIU Juan WANG Lingli WU Li ZHANG Youbin SI | 2021 | Pedosphere2021,31,6: | 0 |
