| 2 | The characteristics of CO_2 assimilation of photosynthesis and chlorophyll fluorescence in transgenic PEPC rice显示文摘With PEPC, PPDK, NADP-ME and PEPC+ PPDK transgenic and untransformed rice (Orysa sativa L.), the activities of related C4 photosynthesis enzymes, the chlorophyll fluorescence parameters, CO2 exchange and other physiological indexes were compared, in which the physiological characteristics of PEPC transgenic rice were mainly studied. The results were as follows: (i) The activities of PEPC in PEPC transgenic rice were 20-fold higher than those in untransformed rice; the light-saturation photosynthetic rates and the carboxylation efficiency of PEPC transgenic rice were increased by 55% and 50% more than those of untransformed rice, respectively, while the CO2 compensation point decreased by 27%. | 3 | On linking climate to Chinese dynastic change: Spatial and temporal variations of monsoonal rain显示文摘The causal correlation or linkage between the East Asian Monsoon (EAM) intensity and rise/fall of Chinese dynasties recently proposed by high-resolution paleoclimate reconstructions is examined in detail. Aside from many exceptions to the correlation, both instrumental and historical climate records show strong spatial variations of rainfall on annual-to-decadal scales over eastern China. The relationship between rainfall and EAM intensity also exhibits regional disparity. These observations suggest: (1) Tak-ing paleo-proxy records from a single locality in eastern China to imply changes in drought/wetness as to affect the cultural and political history of China is fraught with uncertainty. | 4 | Environmental Factors Affecting Temporal and Spatial Dynamics of Soil Erosion in Xingguo County, South China显示文摘By using soil erosion maps of four different time periods and a digital elevation model (DEM), in combination withthe remote sensing and GIS technologies, soil erosion dynamics in Xingguo County of Jiangxi Province in South Chinawere analyzed on both temporal and spatial scales in soils of different parent materials, altitudes and slopes. The resultsshowed that from 1958 to 2000 severe soil erosion was coming under control with a decreasing percentage of the land undersevere erosion. It was also found that the soils developed from Quaternary red clay, granite and purple shale were moresusceptible to soil erosion and that areas sitting between 200 to 500 m in altitude with a slope less than 3° or between7° to 20° where human activities were frequent remained to be zones where soil erosion was most likely to occur. | 5 | Paleotemperature changes over the past 3000 years in eastern Beijing, China: A reconstraction based on Mg/Sr records in a stalagmite显示文摘The Mg/Sr ratio in a stalagmite, which is di-rectly proportional to DMg/Ca, the solid-liquid distribution coefficient of Mg, is proposed as a geochemical thermometer to estimate paleotemperature changes. The paleotempera-ture change in eastern Beijing over the past 3000 years has been reconstructed by using this thermometer in the stalag-mite ZFFS-1 from Jingdong Cave. The records can be di-vided into two periods: 3000—2000 aBP, cool and wet, the air temperature averaging 9.8℃; and 2000 aBP—present, hot and dry, the air temperature being 1℃ higher than the mean value (11.7℃) of the past 3000 years. During 500—200 aBP, the air temperature was about 1.2℃ lower than that of the present, corresponding to the Little Ice Age in Europe. Like d 18O and d 13C, Mg/Sr (or DMg/Ca) reflects an obviously warming trend of the past 200 years. | 6 | Association of genotypes of rs671 within ALDH2 with risk for gastric cardia adenocarcinoma in the Chinese Han population in high-and low-incidence areas显示文摘Objective: This study aimed to determine if gastric cardia adenocarcinoma(GCA) risk was associated with the lys(A or *2) allele at the rs671(glu504lys) polymorphism within the aldehyde dehydrogenase 2(ALDH2) gene in a Chinese Han population. We also aimed to investigate ALDH2 genotypic distributions between subjects from high- and low-incidence areas for both GCA and esophageal squamous cell carcinoma(ESCC).Methods: We designed a case-control study including 2,686 patients with GCA and 3,675 control subjects from high- and lowincidence areas for both GCA and ESCC in China. Taq Man allele discrimination assay was used to genotype the rs671 polymorphism. χ~2 test and binary logistic regression analysis were used to estimate the odds ratios for the development of GCA,and multivariate ordinal logistic regression was used to analyze ALDH2 genotypic distributions among different groups.Results: Compared with ALDH2*1/*1 homozygotes, ALDH2*1/*2 and ALDH2*2/*2 carriers did not increase the risk for GCA in the Chinese Han population(P>0.05). Interestingly, the ratio of homozygous or heterozygous ALDH2 *2 carriers in highincidence areas for both GCA and ESCC was lower than that in low-incidence areas(P<0.001).Conclusions: Genotypes of rs671 at ALDH2 may not increase GCA susceptibility in Chinese Han populations. In addition, the ALDH2 genotypic distribution differs between Chinese Han populations from high- and low-incidence areas for both GCA and ESCC. | 7 | Abnormal energy metabolism and tau phosphorylation in the brains of middle-aged mice in response to atmospheric PM2.5 exposure显示文摘In light of the accelerated aging of the global population and the deterioration of the atmosphere pollution, we sought to clarify the potential mechanisms by which fine particulate matter(PM_(2.5)) can cause cognitive impairment and neurodegeneration through the alteration of mitochondrial structure and function. The results indicate that PM_(2.5) inhalation reduces ATP production by disrupting the aerobic tricarboxylic acid cycle and oxidative phosphorylation, thereby causing the hypophosphorylation of tau in the cortices of middle-aged mice. Furthermore, excessive reactive oxygen species generation was involved in the impairment. Interestingly, these alterations were partially reversed after exposure to PM_(2.5) ended. | 9 | Characterization of 500 Chinese patients with cervical esophageal cancer by clinicopathological and treatment outcomes显示文摘Objective: There are no comprehensive studies on survival outcomes and optimal treatment protocols for cervical esophageal cancer(CEC), due to its rare clinical prevalence. Our objective was to determine the relationship between pathological characteristics, treatment protocols, and survival outcomes in Chinese CEC patients.Methods: A total of 500 Chinese CEC patients were selected from our 500,000 esophageal and gastric cardia carcinoma database(1973–2018). There were two main groups: patients treated with surgery, and patients receiving non-surgical treatments(radiotherapy, radiochemotherapy, and chemotherapy). The Chi-square test and Kaplan–Meier method were used to compare the continuous variables and survival.Results: Among the 500 CEC patients, 278(55.6%) were male, and the median age was 60.9 ± 9.4 years. A total of 496 patients(99.2%) were diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma. In 171(34.2%) patients who received surgery, 22(12.9%) had undergone laryngectomy. In 322(64.4%) patients who received non-surgical treatments, 245(76.1%) received radiotherapy. Stratified survival analysis showed that only T stage was related with survival outcomes for CEC patients in the surgical group, and the outcomes between laryngectomy and non-laryngectomy patients were similar. It was noteworthy that the 5-year survival rate was similar in CEC patients among the different groups treated with surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or radiochemotherapy(P = 0.244). Conclusions: The CEC patients had similar survival outcomes after curative esophagectomy and radiotherapy, including those with or without total laryngectomy.
