| 1 | Scour countermeasures for cylindrical piers using riprap and combination of collar and riprap显示文摘Various methods are proposed to control scouring around bridge piers. In the present study application of riprap alone and combinations of riprap and collar were examined experimentally for scour control around cylindrical bridge piers. Tests were conducted with seven riprap sizes and with two different sizes of collars. Empirical equations were developed for stable riprap diameter for two cases of piers with and without collar protection. Extent of riprap layer is also presented for these two cases. The results showed that in the range of b/dR≤7.5 (where b is pier diameter and dR is riprap size) using a collar reduced the stable riprap size. It was also concluded that using collar reduced the riprap layer extension in front and sides of the pier. | Amir R. ZARRATI Mohammad R. | 3 | Lens thickness assessment : anterior segment optical coherence tomography versus A-scan ultrasonography显示文摘AIM: To assess lens thickness measurements with anterior segment-optical coherence tomography(AS-OCT)in comparison with A-scan ultrasonography(A-scan US).·METHODS: There were 218 adult subjects(218 eyes)aged 59.2 ±9.2y enrolled in this prospective cross-sectional study. Forty-three eyes had open angles and 175 eyes had narrow angles. Routine ophthalmic exam was performed and nuclear opacity was graded using the Lens Opacities Classification System Ⅲ(LOCS Ⅲ). Lens thickness was measured by AS-OCT(Visante OCT, Carl Zeiss Meditec, Dublin, CA, USA). The highest quality image was selected for each eye and lens thickness was calculated using Image J software. Lens thickness was also measured by A-scan US.·RESULTS: Interclass correlations showed a value of99.7% for intra-visit measurements and 95.3% for inter-visit measurements. The mean lens thickness measured by AS-OCT was not significantly different from that of A-scan US(4.861 ±0.404 vs 4.866 ±0.351 mm, P =0.74).Lens thickness values obtained from the two instruments were highly correlated overall(Pearson correlation coefficient =0.81,P <0.001), and in all LOCS Ⅲ specific subgroups except in grade 5 of nuclear opacity. Bland-Altman analysis revealed a 95% limit of agreement from-0.45 to 0.46 mm. Lens thickness difference between the two instruments became smaller as the lens thickness increased and AS-OCT yielded smaller values than A-scan US in thicker lens(β=-0.29, P <0.001)· CONCLUSION: AS-OCT-derived lens thickness measurement is valid and comparable to the results obtained by A-scan US. It can be used as a reliable noncontact method for measuring lens thickness in adults with or without significant cataract. | Nikoo Hamzeh Sasan Moghimi Golshan Latifi Massood Mohammadi Nassim Khatibi Shan C.Lin | 2015 | International Journal of Ophthalmology(English edition)2015,8,6: | 2 |

| 5 | Unconfined compressive strength prediction of soils stabilized using artificial neural networks and support vector machines显示文摘This study aims to improve the unconfined compressive strength of soils using additives as well as by predicting the strength behavior of stabilized soils using two artificial-intelligence-based models. The soils used in this study are stabilized using various combinations of cement, lime, and rice husk ash.To predict the results of unconfined compressive strength tests conducted on soils,a comprehensive laboratory dataset comprising 137 soil specimens treated with different combinations of cement, lime, and rice husk ash is used. Two artificial-intelligence-based models including artificial neural networks and support vector machines are used comparatively to predict the strength characteristics of soils treated with cement, lime, and rice husk ash under different conditions. The suggested models predicted the unconfined compressive strength of soils accurately and can be introduced as reliable predictive models in geotechnical engineering. This study demonstrates the better performance of support vector machines in predicting the strength of the investigated soils compared with artificial neural networks. The type of kernel function used in support vector machine models contributed positively to the performance of the proposed models. Moreover, based on sensitivity analysis results,it is discovered that cement and lime contents impose more prominent effects on the unconfined compressive strength values of the investigated soils compared with the other parameters. | Alireza TABARSA Nima LATIFI Abdolreza OSOULI Younes BAGHERI | 2021 | Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering2021,15,2: | 2 |
