| 1 | Current status and perspectives of immune-based therapiesfor hepatocellular carcinoma显示文摘Hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)is a frequent cancer with a high mortality.For early stage cancer there are potentially curative treatments including local ablation,resection and liver transplantation.However,for more advanced stage disease,there is no optimal treatment available.Even in the case of a'curative'treatment,recurrence or development of a new cancer in the precancerous liver is common.Thus,there is an urgent need for novel and effective(adjuvant)therapies to treat HCC and to prevent recurrence after local treatment in patients with HCC.The unique immune response in the liver favors tolerance,which remains a genuine challenge for conventional immunotherapy in patients with HCC.However,even in this'immunotolerant'organ,spontaneous immune responses against tumor antigens have been detected,although they are insufficient to achieve significant tumor death.Local ablation therapy leads to immunogenic tumor cell death by inducing the release of massive amounts of antigens,which enhances spontaneous immune response.New immune therapies such as dendritic cell vaccination and immune checkpoint inhibition are under investigation.Immunotherapy for cancer has made huge progress in the last few years and clinical trials examining the use of immunotherapy to treat hepatocellular carcinoma have shown some success.In this review,we discuss the current status of and offer some perspectives on immunotherapy for hepatocellular carcinoma,which could change disease progression in the near future. | Maridi Aerts DaphnéBenteyn Hans Van Vlierberghe Kris Thielemans Hendrik Reynaert | 2016 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2016,22,1: | 24 |
| 2 | Evaluation of the updated definition of early allograft dysfunction in donation after brain death and donation after cardiac death liver allografts显示文摘BACKGROUND:An updated definition of early allograft dysfunction(EAD) was recently validated in a multicenter study of 300 deceased donor liver transplant recipients.This analysis did not differentiate between donation after brain death(DBD) and donation after cardiac death(DCD) allograft recipients.METHODS:We reviewed our prospectively entered database for all DBD(n=377) and DCD(n=38) liver transplantations between January 1,2006 and October 30,2011.The incidence of EAD as well as its ability to predict graft failure and survival was compared between DBD and DCD groups.RESULTS:EAD was a valid predictor of both graft and patient survival at six months in DBD allograft recipients,but in DCD allograft recipients there was no significant difference in the rate of graft failure in those with EAD(11.5%) compared with those without EAD(16.7%)(P=0.664) or in the rate of death in recipients with EAD(3.8%) compared with those without EAD(8.3%)(P=0.565).The graft failure rate in the first 6 months in those with international normalized ratio ≥1.6 on day 7 who received a DCD allograft was 37.5% compared with 6.7% for those with international normalized ratio <1.6 on day 7(P=0.022).CONCLUSIONS:The recently validated definition of EAD is a valid predictor of patient and graft survival in recipients of DBD allografts.On initial assessment,it does not appear to be a useful predictor of patient and graft survival in recipients of DCD allografts,however a study with a larger sample size of DCD allografts is needed to confirm these findings.The high ALT/AST levels in most recipients of DCD livers as well as the predisposition to biliary complications and early cholestasis make these parameters as poor predictors of graft failure.An alternative definition of EAD that gives greater weight to the INR on day 7 may be more relevant in this population. | Kris P Croome William Wall Douglas Quan Sai Vangala Vivian McAlister Paul Marotta Roberto Hernandez-Alejandro | 2012 | Hepatobiliary & Pancreatic Diseases International2012,11,4: | 15 |

| 6 | Larval diet affects development and reproduction of East Asian strain of the fall armyworm,Spodoptera frugiperda显示文摘In December 11,2018,the fall armyworm(FAW),Spodoptera frugiperda invaded China and has since impacted local maize,sorghum and other crops.Here,we draw on laboratory experiments to show how different host crops(i.e.,maize,sorghum,wheat and rice)and artificial diet affect larval growth and adult reproduction of one local FAW strain.Larval diet affected development duration,pupation rate,survival and emergence rate of pupae,and S.frugiperda adult fecundity.FAW attained the slowest larval development(19.4 days)on sorghum and the fastest(14.1 days)on artificial diet,with larvae attaining 99.6%survival on the latter food item.On rice,FAW larvae attained survival rate of 0.4%and were unable to pupate successfully.Pupation rate and pupal survival varied substantially between artificial diet and live plantlets at different phenological stages.Pupal weight was the highest(0.26 g)on artificial diet and the lowest(0.14 g)on sorghum,while FAW females reached the highest fecundity(699.7 eggs/female)on 2-leaf stage maize.Egg hatching rate equaled 93.6%on 4-or 5-leaf stage maize and 36.6%on artificial diet.FAW intrinsic rate of natural increase and the finite rate of increase varied between larval diets,reflecting how young maize leaves are the most suitable diet.Our findings can help to refine laboratory rearing protocols,devise population forecasting models or guide the deployment of‘area-wide’integrated pest management(IPM)modules in FAW-invaded areas of China and other Asian countries. | HE Li-mei WANG Teng-li CHEN Yu-chao GE Shi-shuai Kris AGWYCKHUYS WU Kong-ming | 2021 | Journal of Integrative Agriculture2021,20,3: | 10 |

| 8 | Adult nutrition affects reproduction and flight performance of the invasive fall armyworm,Spodoptera frugiperda in China显示文摘Floral resources,such as carbohydrate-rich nectar or pollen,can bolster fitness and raise reproductive output of adult lepidopterans.Here,we used laboratory experiments to assess how those plant-derived foods impact adult fecundity,reproductive physiology and flight performance of an invasive strain of the fall armyworm,Spodoptera frugiperda(FAW;Lepidoptera:Noctuidae)in China.More specifically,supplementary feeding on bee pollen and honey enhanced FAW flight duration,testis size,ovarian development,longevity and adult fecundity.FAW adults attained the longest pre-oviposition(10.8 days)and oviposition period(6.8 days)and longevity(19.2 days)on 5%acacia honey.Upon access to 2.5%acacia honey and 2.5‰pine pollen,S.frugiperda attained the highest mating rate(79.7%),fecundity(644.9 eggs/female)and egg hatching rate(82.3%).Feeding on honey further delayed decay of male testes,while ovarian development was enhanced when female moths were allowed access to 2.5%honey and 2.5‰pine pollen.Upon feeding on 5%honey solution,S.frugiperda engaged in flight over the longest duration(9.5 h),distance(29.9 km)and speed(3.1 km h-1).Honey had a comparatively greater effect on the above parameters than pollen.Our findings help decipher FAW invasion patterns and population dynamics,facilitate the development of nutritional attractants,and contribute to integrated pest management of this newly-invasive pest in eastern Asia. | HE Li-mei JIANG Shan CHEN Yu-chao Kris AGWYCKHUYS GE Shi-shuai HE Wei GAO Xi-wu WU Kong-ming | 2021 | Journal of Integrative Agriculture2021,20,3: | 6 |
| 9 | Six-year outcomes in neovascular age-related macular degeneration with ranibizumab显示文摘● AIM: To evaluate the outcomes of ≥6y ranibizumab therapy in neovascular age-related macular degeneration(AMD).● METHODS: HELIX was a retrospective, observational effeciveness study using medical records of patients treated in three clinics in Belgium. Patients had neovascular AMD and were initially treated with intravitreal ranibizumab(0.5 mg) between November 1, 2007 and October 31, 2008, had ≥6y of data available, and were treated on an ongoing, as-needed basis. Outcomes included best-corrected visual acuity(BCVA) and central retinal thickness(CRT).● RESULTS: The sample consisted of 88 eyes from 69 patients. Mean age was 76.4±6.5y, most patients were female(62.3%). Most eyes(62.5%) were treatment-naive, 33 previously treated eyes had received predominantly other anti-vascular endothelial growth factor agents and verteporfin. Mean baseline BCVA was 57.4±12.7 ETDRS letters and CRT was 292±86 μm. On average, patients received 20.6±11.9 ranibizumab injections over the ≥6y. Intervals between injections were on average 12.7±16.1wk. Mean change in BCVA from baseline to last observation for the sample was less than one letter(-0.9±17.3 letters), with an average loss of-3.2±15.6 letters in previously treated eyes versus a gain of 0.6±18.4 letters in treatment-na?ve eyes. When considering a loss of <15 letters over 6y as stabilization of disease, 75.9% of all eyes showed a positive(improvement or stabilization) outcome. Mean change in CRT from baseline to last observation for the sample was-26.9±148.4 μm with the greatest reduction observed in treatment-naive eyes.● CONCLUSION: This retrospective study of 69 neovascular AMD patients treated for ≥6y with ranibizumab demonstrates long-term visual stabilization. | 11 | A comparison of survival and pathologic features of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis and hepatitis C virus patients with hepatocellular carcinoma显示文摘AIM:To compare the clinical outcome and pathologic features of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH) patients with hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC) and hepatitic C virus(HCV) patients with HCC(another group in which HCC is commonly seen) undergoing liver transplantation.METHODS:Patients transplanted for HCV and NASH at our institution from January 2000 to April 2011 were analyzed.All explanted liver histology and pre-transplant liver biopsies were examined by two specialist liver histopathologists.Patient demographics,disease free survival,explant liver characteristics and HCC features(tumour number,cumulative tumour size,vascular invasion and differentiation) were compared between HCV and NASH liver transplant recipients.RESULTS:A total of 102 patients with NASH and 283 patients with HCV were transplanted.The incidence of HCC in NASH transplant recipients was 16.7%(17/102).The incidence of HCC in HCV transplant recipients was 22.6%(64/283).Patients with NASH-HCC were statistically older than HCV-HCC patients(P < 0.001).A significantly higher proportion of HCV-HCC patients had vascular invasion(23.4% vs 6.4%,P = 0.002) and poorly differentiated HCC(4.7% vs 0%,P < 0.001) compared to the NASH-HCC group.A trend of poorer recurrence free survival at 5 years was seen in HCV-HCC patients compared to NASH-HCC who underwent a Liver transplantation(P = 0.11).CONCLUSION:Patients transplanted for NASH-HCC appear to have less aggressive tumour features compared to those with HCV-HCC,which likely in part accounts for their improved recurrence free survival. | Roberto Hernandez-Alejandro Kris P Croome Martin Drage Nathalie Sela Jeremy Parfitt Natasha Chandok Paul Marotta Cheryl Dale William Wall Douglas Quan | 2012 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2012,18,31: | 5 |

| 13 | Emergence,Mating and Oviposition Behavior of the Chinese Population in Pink Bollworm,Pectinophora gossypiella (Lepidoptera:Gelechiidae)显示文摘The pink bollworm, Pectinophora gossypiella (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) is one of the most serious lepidopteran pests of cotton in the world. This pest invaded China at the onset of the 20th century, possibly through repeated introductions from several different locations worldwide. In this paper, we describe different behavioral parameters of this Hubei P. gossypiella strain under laboratory and field conditions. Using an infra-red video recorder, we observed (nocturnal) emergence, flight and mating activities, and oviposition patterns. Moth emergence started from 13:00 and continued up till 23:00. Under laboratory and field conditions, 2-7-d-old moths initiated flight around sunset, peaked 50 min later and gradually declined until 04:00. Although mating started immediately after darkness (i.e., 20:00), mating behavior was most intense from 23:00 to 03:40. Oviposition also showed distinct time-related patterns, with approx. 70% eggs laid between 20:00 and 22:00. In the studies of the relationship between flight and oviposition, the duration of flight had an effect on oviposition. The 1-d-old moths flown for 6 and 12 h began oviposition earlier than the unflown ones, and the 6-h flight had no effect on the egg production. However, the longevity of the flown moths was shortened after flight. In addition, the peaks of oviposition for the flown moths were advanced 2-3 d. The age when the moths flied affected the oviposition of adult moths. The earlier the moths started to fly after emergence, the greater the fecundity they had. The average egg production of moths flown for 24 h was less than that of non-flown moths which were of the same age. Both flight and delay in mating could advance the oviposition peak. | 15 | Mitochondrial DNA from hepatocytes as a ligand for TLR9: Drivers of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis?显示文摘Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD) is the most common liver disease worldwide, affecting approximately one third of the Western world. It consists of a wide spectrum of liver disorders, ranging from fatty liver to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis(NASH), which consists of steatosis, ballooning injury and inflammation. Despite an alarming growth in the statistics surrounding NAFLD, there are as yet no effective therapies for its treatment. Innate immune signaling has been thought to play a significant role in initiating and augmenting hepatic inflammation, contributing to the transition from nonalcoholic fatty liver to NASH. An immune response is triggered by countless signals called damage-associated molecular patterns(DAMPs) elicited by lipid-laden and damaged hepatocytes, which are recognized by pattern recognition receptors(PRRs) on hepatic immune cells to initiate inflammatory signaling. In this editorial, in addition to summarizing innate immune signaling in NAFLD and discussing potential therapies that target innate immune pathways, we have described a recent study that demonstrated that mitochondrial DNA serves as a DAMP activating a hepatic PRR, TLR9, in mice and in the plasma of NASH patients. | 19 | Two-way predation between immature stages of the hoverfly Eupeodes corollae and the invasive fall armyworm(Spodoptera frugiperda J.E.Smith)显示文摘Since its 2018 invasion of eastern Asia,the fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda(Lepidoptera:Noctuidae)has become a key pest in local maize production.Though pesticides have been widely used to mitigate the initial S.frugiperda attack,biological control is receiving ample attention as a desirable,environmentally-sound alternative to chemical control.Hoverflies(Diptera:Syrphidae)are abundant natural enemies in Chinese maize fields and have been observed to consume S.frugiperda larvae.In this study,we use laboratory assays to study the two-way interaction between immature stages of S.frugiperda and the endemic syrphid Eupeodes corollae.To mimic natural conditions,assays were performed in the presence of fresh maize leaves.Those 2 nd or 3 rd instar larvae of E.corollae preyed on 1 st and 2 nd instar S.frugiperda larvae with a Holling type III response,consuming a respective theoretical maximum of 43.48 and 83.33 larvae over a 24-h period.Conversely,once S.frugiperda larvae reached 3 rd instar,they exhibited aggressive behavior and equally preyed on syrphid larvae with a Holling type III response.Those 5 th and 6 th instar larvae of S.frugiperda consumed a respective 16.39-19.23,6.02-19.61 and 6.76-8.26 of 1 st,2 nd and 3 rd instar E.corollae larvae per day.Though our results await field-level validation,S.frugiperda agonistic(i.e.,defensive)and consumptive behavior towards resident natural enemies such as E.corollae possibly degrades biotic resistance and raises its invasion potential.Our findings shine new light on the interaction between lepidopteran herbivores and their natural enemies,and can help advance the development of conservation biological control and other integrated pest management(IPM)strategies against S.frugiperda in China and abroad. | LI Hui JIANG Shan-shan ZHANG Hao-wen GENG Ting Kris AGWYCKHUYS WU Kong-ming | 2021 | Journal of Integrative Agriculture2021,20,3: | 3 |
