1Alcoholic pancreatitis:New insights into the pathogenesisand treatment显示文摘Acute pancreatitis is a necro-inflammatory disease of the exocrine pancreas that is characterized by inappropriate activation of zymogens, infiltration of the pancreas by inflammatory cells, and destruction of the pancreatic exocrine cells. Acute pancreatitis can progress to a severe life-threatening disease. Currently there is no pharmacotherapy to prevent or treat acute pancreatitis. One of the more common factors associated with acute pancreatitis is alcohol abuse. Although commonly associated with pancreatitis alcohol alone is unable to cause pancreatitis. Instead, it appears that alcohol and its metabolic by-products predispose the pancreas to damage from agents that normally do not cause pancreatitis, or to more severe disease from agents that normally cause mild pancreatic damage. Over the last 10 to 20 years, a tremendous amount of work has defined a number of alcohol-mediated biochemical changes in pancreatic cells. Among these changes are: Sustained levels of intracellular calcium, activation of the mitochondrial permeability transition pore, endoplasmic reticulum stress, impairment in autophagy, alteration in the activity of transcriptional activators, and colocalization of lysosomal and pancreatic digestive enzymes. Elucidation of these changes has led to a deeper understanding of the mechanisms by which ethanol predisposes acinar cells to damage. This greater understanding has revealed a number of promising targets for therapeutic intervention. 4Retinal regeneration requires dynamic Notch signaling显示文摘Retinal damage in the adult zebrafish induces Müller glia reprogramming to produce neuronal progenitor cells that proliferate and differentiate into retinal neurons.Notch signaling,which is a fundamental mechanism known to drive cell-cell communication,is required to maintain Müller glia in a quiescent state in the undamaged retina,and repression of Notch signaling is necessary for Müller glia to reenter the cell cycle.The dynamic regulation of Notch signaling following retinal damage also directs proliferation and neurogenesis of the Müller glia-derived progenitor cells in a robust regeneration response.In contrast,mammalian Müller glia respond to retinal damage by entering a prolonged gliotic state that leads to additional neuronal death and permanent vision loss.Understanding the dynamic regulation of Notch signaling in the zebrafish retina may aid efforts to stimulate Müller glia reprogramming for regeneration of the diseased human retina.Recent findings identified DeltaB and Notch3 as the ligand-receptor pair that serves as the principal regulators of zebrafish Müller glia quiescence.In addition,multi-omics datasets and functional studies indicate that additional Notch receptors,ligands,and target genes regulate cell proliferation and neurogenesis during the regeneration time course.Still,our understanding of Notch signaling during retinal regeneration is limited.To fully appreciate the complex regulation of Notch signaling that is required for successful retinal regeneration,investigation of additional aspects of the pathway,such as post-translational modification of the receptors,ligand endocytosis,and interactions with other fundamental pathways is needed.Here we review various modes of Notch signaling regulation in the context of the vertebrate retina to put recent research in perspective and to identify open areas of inquiry.Leah J.Campbell Jaclyn L.Levendusky Shannon A.Steines David R.Hyde 2022Neural Regeneration Research2022,17,6:3
5用姿势控制能力不足确定脑震荡遗留的神经功能缺损(英文)显示文摘Concussion,or mild traumatic brain injury,incidence rates have reached epidemic levels and impaired postural control is a cardinal symptom.The purpose of this review is to provide an overview of the linear and non-linear assessments of post-concussion postural control.The current acute evaluation for concussion utilizes the subjective balance error scoring system(BESS) to assess postural control.While the sensitivity of the overall test battery is high,the sensitivity of the BESS is unacceptably low and,with repeat administration,is unable to accurately identify recovery.Sophisticated measures of postural control,utilizing traditional linear assessments,have identified impairments in postural control well beyond BESS recovery.Both assessments of quiet stance and gait have identified lingering impairments for at least 1 month post-concussion.Recently,the application of non-linear metrics to concussion recovery have begun to receive limited attention with the most commonly utilized metric being approximate entropy(Ap En).Ap En,most commonly in the medial-lateral plane,has successfully identified impaired postural control in the acute post-concussion timeframe even when linear assessments of instrumented measures are equivalent to healthy pre-injury values;unfortunately these studies have not gone beyond the acute phase of recovery.One study has identified lingering deficits in postural control,utilizing Shannon and Renyi entropy metrics,which persist at least through clinical recovery and return to participation.Finally,limited evidence from two studies suggest that individuals with a previous history of a single concussion,even months or years prior,may display altered Ap En metrics.Overall,non-linear metrics provide a fertile area for future study to further the understanding of postural control impairments acutely post-concussion and address the current challenge of sensitive identification of recovery.Thomas A.Buckley Jessie R.Oldham Jaclyn B.Caccese 2016Journal of Sport and Health Science2016,5,1:3
6Soil-Landscape Estimation and Evaluation Program(SLEEP)to predict spatial distribution of soil attributes for environmental modeling显示文摘The spatial distribution of surface and subsurface soil attributes is an important input to environmental modeling.Soil attributes represent an important input to the Soil and Water Assessment Tool(SWAT),which influence the accuracy of the modeling outputs.An ArcGIS-based tool was developed to predict soil attributes and provide inputs to SWAT.The essential inputs are digital elevation model and field observations.Legacy soil data/maps can be used to derive observations when recent field surveys are not available.Additional layers,such as satellite images and auxiliary data,improve the prediction accuracy.The model contains a series of steps(menus)to facilitate iterative analysis.The steps are summarized in deriving many terrain attributes to characterize each pixel based on local attributes as well as the characteristics of the contributing area.The model then subdivides the entire watershed into smaller facets(subdivisions of subwatersheds)and classifies these into groups.A linear regression model to predict soil attributes from terrain attributes and auxiliary data are established for each class and implemented to predict soil attributes for each pixel within the class and then merged for the entire watershed or study area.SLEEP(Soil-Landscape Estimation and Evaluation Program)utilizes Pedo-transfer functions to provide the spatial distribution of the necessary unmapped soil data needed for SWAT prediction.An application of the tool demonstrated acceptable accuracy and better spatial distribution of soil attributes compared with two spatial interpolation techniques.The analysis indicated low sensitivity of SWAT prediction to the number of field observations when SLEEP is used to provide the soil layer.This demonstrates the potential of SLEEP to support SWAT modeling where soil data is scarce.Feras M.Ziadat Yeganantham Dhanesh David Shoemate Raghavan Srinivasan Balaji Narasimhan Jaclyn Tech 2015International Journal of Agricultural and Biological Engineering2015,8,3:3

9Comparison of methods for determining orthotropic axes in 3D femur remodeling显示文摘The density distribution and internal structure of trabecular bone are modulated by local mechanical environment. In this study, an orthotropic adaptation algorithm was applied to the 3D femur model to simulate the variations of stiffness and orientation of trabecular bone under multi-loading conditions. This algorithm includes the determination of orthotropic axes and the stiffness modification of trabecular bone. Three methods were used to determine the orthotropic axes, i.e. the maximal cycle method, the stress maximum method, and the composite method. We found that the composite method was better than the other two. Firstly, the characteristics of density distribution obtained by using the composite method agreed better with those in real proximal femur. Secondly, the material orientation aligned with the known trabeculaer pattern. Finally, the ratios of the longitudinal modulus to the transverse modulus were also shown to be realistic in three local regions of the proximal femur.Lau Jaclyn 2007Progress in Natural Science:Materials International2007,17,12:2
