1Reactive oxygen species signaling and stomatal movement in plant responses to drought stress and pathogen attack显示文摘Stomata, the pores formed by a pair of guard cells, are the main gateways for water transpiration and photosynthetic CO_2 exchange, as well as pathogen invasion in land plants. Guard cell movement is regulated by a combination of environmental factors, including water status, light, CO_2 levels and pathogen attack, as well as endogenous signals, such as abscisic acid and apoplastic reactive oxygen species(ROS). Under abiotic and bioticstress conditions, extracellular ROS are mainly produced by plasma membrane-localized NADPH oxidases, whereas intracellular ROS are produced in multiple organelles. These ROS form a sophisticated cellular signaling network, with the accumulation of apoplastic ROS an early hallmark of stomatal movement. Here, we review recent progress in understanding the molecular mechanisms of the ROS signaling network,primarily during drought stress and pathogen attack. We summarize the roles of apoplastic ROS in regulating stomatal movement, ABA and CO_2 signaling, and immunity responses.Finally, we discuss ROS accumulation and communication between organelles and cells. 2Numerical and Experimental Modelling of Gas Flow and Heat Transfer in the Air Gap of an Electric Machine显示文摘This work deals with the cooling of high-speed electric machines, such as motors and generators, through an air gap. It consists of numerical and experimental modeling of gas flow and heat transfer in an annular channel. Velocity and temperature profiles are modeled in the air gap of a high-speed test machine. Friction and heat transfer coefficients are presented in a large velocity range. The goals are reached acceptably using numerical and experimental research. The velocity field by the numerical method does not match in every respect the estimated flow mode. 5Clinically relevant human temporal bone measurements using novel high-resolution cone-beam CT显示文摘Objective: To test the feasibility of measuring fine temporal bone structures using a newly established cone-beam computed tomography(CBCT)system.Materials and methods: Six formalin-fixed human cadaver temporal bones were imaged using a high-resolution CBCT system that has 900 frames and copper t aluminum filtration. Fine temporal bone structures, including those of the facial nerve canal and vestibular structures, were identified and measured.Results: The fine structures of the middle ear, including the tympanic membrane, tendon of the tensor tympani, cochleariform process of the semicanal of the tensor tympani, pyramidal eminence, footplate of the stapes, full path of the facial nerve within the temporal bone, supralabyrinthine space, semicircular canals, pathway of the subarcuate canal, and full path of the vestibular aqueduct, were clearly demonstrated. The vestibular aqueduct has a midpoint width of 0.4 ± 0.0 mm and opercular width of 0.5 ± 0.1 mm(mean ± SD). The length of the internal acoustic meatus was 10.6 ± 1.2 mm(mean ± SD), and the diameter of the internal acoustic meatus was 3.7 ± 0.3 mm(mean ± SD).Conclusion: This novel high-resolution CBCT system has potentially broad applications in the diagnosis of inner ear disease and in monitoring associated pathological changes, surgical planning, navigation for the ear surgery, and temporal bone training.Jing Zou Jaakko Laahelma Antti Arnisalo Ilmari Pyykko 2017Journal of Otology2017,12,1:10

9Numerical and Experimental Modelling of Gas Flow and Heat Transfer in the Air Gap of an Electric Machine. Part II: Grooved Surfaces显示文摘The study deals with the cooling of a high-speed electric machine through an air gap with numerical and experimental methods. The rotation speed of the test machine is between 5000-4000 r/rain and the machine is cooled by a forced gas flow through the air gap. In the previous part of the research the friction coefficient was measured for smooth and grooved stator cases with a smooth rotor. The heat transfer coefficient was recently calculated by a numerical method and measured for a smooth stator-rotor combination. In this report the cases with axial groove slots at the stator and/or rotor surfaces are studied. Numerical flow simulations and measurements have been done for the test machine dimensions at a large velocity range. At constant mass flow rate the heat transfer coefficients by the numerical method attain bigger values with groove slots on the stator or rotor surfaces. The results by the numerical method have been confirmed with measurements. 10Fluid dynamic modeling of a free piston engine with labyrinth seals显示文摘Preliminary design and simulation of a free piston engine suitable for small-scale energy production in distributed energy systems is presented in this paper.The properties,particularly the properties of gas seals of the engine are simulated using a simulation program developed for this case,and the results are utilized in preliminary main design parameter selection.The engine simulation program was developed by combining and modifying the source codes of the simulation and calculation programs obtained from Helsinki University of Technology,Tampere University of Technology,and Lappeenranta University of Technology.Because of the contact-free labyrinth seal used in the piston,the efficiency of the motor is lower than the efficiency of a conventional motor with oil lubricated piston rings.On the other hand,the lack of bearing losses,and the lack of losses associated with a crankshaft system and a gearbox,as well as the lack of lubrication oil expenses,compensates this effect.As a net result,this new motor would perform slightly better than the conventional one.Being completely oil-free,it is very environmentally friendly,and its exhaust gases are completely free of oil residuals which are causing problems in normal gas motors.Jaakko Larjola Juha Honkatukia Petri Sallinen Jari Backman 2010Journal of Thermal Science2010,19,2:4

13Feasibility of Pulse Combustion in Micro Gas Turbines显示文摘In gas turbines, a fast decrease of efficiency appears when the output decreases; the efficiency of a large gas turbine (20…30 MW) is in the order of 40 %, the efficiency of a 30 kW gas turbine with a recuperator is in the order of 25 %, but the efficiency of a very small gas turbine (2…6 kW) in the order of 4…6 % (or 8…12 % with an optimal recuperator). This is mainly a result of the efficiency decrease in kinetic compressors, due to the Reynolds number effect. Losses in decelerating flow in a flow passage are sensitive to the Reynolds number effects. In contrary to the compression, the efficiency of expansion in turbines is not so sensitive to the Reynolds number; very small turbines are made with rather good efficiency because the flow acceleration stabilizes the boundary layer. This study presents a system where the kinetic compressor of a gas turbine is replaced with a pulse combustor. The combustor is filled with a combustible gas mixture, ignited, and the generated high pressure gas is expanded in the turbine. The process is repeated frequently, thus producing a pulsating flow to the turbine; or almost a uniform flow, if several parallel combustors are used and triggered alternately in a proper way. Almost all the compression work is made by the temperature increase from the combustion. This gas turbine type is investigated theoretically and its combustor also experimentally with the conclusion that in a 2 kW power size, the pulse flow gas turbine is not as attractive as expected due to the big size and weight of parallel combustors and due to the efficiency being in the order of 8 % to 10 %. 15Unsteady Pressure Field in a Vaneless Diffuser of a Centrifugal Compressor: An Experimental and Computational Analysis显示文摘Unsteady static pressure was measured and time-accurate numerical simulations were conducted in order to analyze unsteady behaviour of the centrifugal compressor diffuser. The unsteady static pressure was measured at the diffuser inlet and outlet at three different circumferential positions. Operation points near the surge, the design operation point and operation point near the choke were used in measurements. The time-accurate simulations were conducted at the design operation point and operation point near the choke. The whole compressor was modelled and the low Reynolds number k-εturbulence model was utilized in numerical simulations.
