1Tooth loss patterns in older adults with special needs:a Minnesota cohort显示文摘This study was conducted to detail tooth loss patterns in older adults with special needs. A total of 491 elderly subjects with special needs were retrospectively selected and followed during 10/1999-12/2006. Medical, dental, cognitive, and functional assessments were abstracted from dental records and used to predict risk of tooth loss. Tooth loss events were recorded for subjects during follow-up. Chi-squared tests were used to study the association between tooth loss and the selected risk factors. Logistic, poisson, and negative binomial regressions were developed to study tooth loss patterns. Overall, 27% of the subjects lost at least one tooth during follow-up. Fourteen subjects had tooth loss events per 100 person-years. Tooth loss pattern did not differ significantly among different special-needs subgroups (i.e. community-dwelling vs. long-term care, physically disabled vs. functionally independent). Special-needs subjects with three or more active dental conditions at arrival had more than twice the risk of losing teeth than those without any existing conditions. After adjusting other factors, the number of carious teeth or retained roots at arrival was a significant predictor of tooth loss for older adults with special needs (P=0.001). These findings indicate that appropriately managing active caries and associated conditions is important to prevent tooth loss for older adults with special needs.Jennifer J.Clark 2011International Journal of Oral Science2011,3,1:3
2Binding pathway determines norepinephrine selectivity for the human β_(1)AR over β_(2)AR显示文摘Beta adrenergic receptors(βARs)mediate physiologic responses to the catecholamines epinephrine and norepinephrine released by the sympathetic nervous system. While the hormone epinephrine binds β_(1)AR and β_(2)AR with similar affinity, the smaller neurotransmitter norepinephrine is approximately tenfold selective for the β_(1)AR.To understand the structural basis for this physiologically important selectivity,we solved the crystal structures of the human β_(1)AR bound to an antagonist carazolol and different agonists including norepinephrine, epinephrine and BI-167107.Structural comparison revealed that the catecholamine-binding pockets are identical between β_(1)AR and β_(2)AR,but the extracellular vestibules have different shapes and electrostatic properties.Metadynamics simulations and mutagenesis studies revealed that these differences influence the path norepinephrine takes to the orthosteric pocket and contribute to the different association rates and thus different affinities.Xinyu Xu Jonas Kaindl Mary J.Clark Harald Hübner Kunio Hirata Roger K.Sunahara Peter Gmeiner Brian K.Kobilka Xiangyu Liu 2021Cell Research2021,31,5:2

6Investigation of serum calcium and vitamin D levels in superior semicircular canal dehiscence syndrome: A case control study显示文摘Objective: It remains unknown whether calcium metabolism has any effect on the clinical presentation of superior semicircular canal dehiscence(SSCD). Our aim was to analyse the adjusted calcium and vitamin D levels in SSCD patients compared to a control group. Methods: This was a prospective case-control study performed in a tertiary referral center, university teaching hospital in the UK. It included all new patients with SSCD seen in a dedicated skull base clinic over a 5-year period(2015-2019) compared to a gender and age matched control group. The main outcome of the study was adjusted calcium and Vitamin D levels between the two groups. Results: A total of 31 SSCD patients were recruited with a matched number of control patients. The mean Vitamin D level on the SSCD group was 44.8 nmoL/l(SD: 20.8) compared to 47.5 nmoL/l(SD: 27.4) on the control group(p = 0.702). Mean Adjusted calcium level was 2.34 mmoL/l(SD: 0.7) for SSCD compared to2.41 mmoL/l(SD: 0.11) for controls(p = 0.01), being within normal limits for both the SSCD and the control group. Conclusion: Our study did not identify a link between Vitamin D levels and presence of SSCD. Normal adjusted calcium values were found in both groups. Despite that a statistically significant lower calcium level was found in the SSCD group which could indicate that suboptimal levels of calcium may affect the micro-environment of the otic capsule at the SSC region.Theofano Tikka Mohd Afiq Mohd Slim Trung Ton Anna Sheldon Louise J.Clark Georgios Kontorinis 2023Journal of Otology2023,18,1:1

12Calculation and interpretation of classical turning surfaces in solids显示文摘Classical turning surfaces of Kohn–Sham potentials separate classically allowed regions(CARs)from classically forbidden regions(CFRs).They are useful for understanding many chemical properties of molecules but need not exist in solids, where the density never decays to zero.At equilibrium geometries,we find that CFRs are absent in perfect metals, rare in covalent semiconductors at equilibrium, but common in ionic and molecular crystals. In all materials,CFRs appear or grow as the internuclear distances are uniformly expanded. They can also appear at a monovacancy in a metal.Calculations with several approximate density functionals and codes confirm these behaviors.A classical picture of conduction suggests that CARs should be connected in metals, and disconnected in wide-gap insulators, and is confirmed in the limits of extreme compression and expansion.Surprisingly, many semiconductors have no CFR at equilibrium,a key finding for density functional construction.Nonetheless,a strong correlation with insulating behavior can still be inferred. Moreover, equilibrium bond lengths for all cases can be estimated from the bond type and the sum of the classical turning radii of the free atoms or ions.Aaron D.Kaplan Stewart J.Clark Kieron Burke John P.Perdew 2021npj Computational Materials2021,,1:0
13FAST discovery of an extremely radio-faint millisecond pulsar from the Fermi-LAT unassociated source 3FGL J0318.1+0252显示文摘High sensitivity radio searches of unassociated γ-ray sources have proven to be an effective way of finding new pulsars. Using the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope(FAST) during its commissioning phase, we have carried out a number of targeted deep searches of Fermi Large Area Telescope(LAT) γ-ray sources. On February 27, 2018 we discovered an isolated millisecond pulsar(MSP), PSR J0318+0253, coincident with the unassociated γ-ray source 3 FGL J0318.1+0252. PSR J0318+0253 has a spin period of 5.19 ms, a dispersion measure(DM) of 26 pc cm-3 corresponding to a DM distance of about 1.3 kpc, and a period-averaged flux density of(~11±2) μJy at L-band(1.05-1.45 GHz). Among all high energy MSPs, PSR J0318+0253 is the faintest ever detected in radio bands, by a factor of at least ~4 in terms of L-band fluxes. With the aid of the radio ephemeris, an analysis of 9.6 years of Fermi-LAT data revealed that PSR J0318+0253 also displays strong γ-ray pulsations. Follow-up observations carried out by both Arecibo and FAST suggest a likely spectral turn-over around 350 MHz. This is the first result from the collaboration between FAST and the Fermi-LAT teams as well as the first confirmed new MSP discovery by FAST, raising hopes for the detection of many more MSPs. Such discoveries will make a significant contribution to our understanding of the neutron star zoo while potentially contributing to the future detection of gravitational waves, via pulsar timing array(PTA) experiments.Pei Wang Di Li Colin J.Clark Pablo M.Saz Parkinson Xian Hou Weiwei Zhu Lei Qian Youling Yue Zhichen Pan Zhijie Liu Xuhong Yu Shanping You Xiaoyao Xie Qijun Zhi Hui Zhang Jumei Yao Jun Yan Chengmin Zhang Kwok Lung Fan Paul S.Ray Matthew Kerr David A.Smith Peter F.Michelson Elizabeth C.Ferrara David J.Thompson Zhiqiang Shen Na Wang FAST&Fermi-LAT Collaboration 2021Science China(Physics,Mechanics & Astronomy)2021,64,12:0
