1A computer vision system for defect discrimination and grading in tomatoes using machine learning and image processing显示文摘With large-scale production and the need for high-quality tomatoes to meet consumer and market standards criteria,have led to the need for an inline,accurate,reliable grading system during the post-harvest process.This study introduced a tomato grading machine vision system based on RGB images.The proposed system performed calyx and stalk scar detection at an average accuracy of 0.9515 for both defected and healthy tomatoes by histogramthresholding based on themean g-r value of these regions of interest.Defected regionswere detected by an RBF-SVMclassifier using the LAB color-space pixel values.Themodel achieved an overall accuracy of 0.989 upon validation.Four grading categories recognitionmodelswere developed based on color and texture features.The RBF-SVMoutperformed all the explored modelswith the highest accuracy of 0.9709 for healthy and defected category.However,the grading accuracy decreased as the number of grading categories increased.A combination of color and texture features achieved the highest accuracy in all the grading categories in image features evaluation.This proposed system can be used as an inline tomato sorting tool to ensure that quality standards are adhered to and maintained.David Ireri Eisa Belal Cedric Okinda Nelson Makange Changying Ji 2019Artificial Intelligence in Agriculture2019,,2:10

9Amphibian richness along modified riparian areas of central Mexico:conservation priorities显示文摘Background:Land‑use change frequently affects faunistic populations and communities.To achieve successful conservation strategies,we need suitable information about species distribution and the causes of extinction risk.Many amphibian species depend on riparian vegetation to complete their life cycles.About 41%of amphibian species are globally threatened,and accurate estimations of population size,species richness and the identification of critical habitats are urgently needed worldwide.To evaluate the magnitude of changes in species richness and demography,estimations that include detection probability are necessary.In this study,we employed multi‑species occupancy models to estimate detection probability and the effect of land cover type(i.e.,cropland,artificial pasture,secondary and mature forest)in a 500‑m radius on the occupancy probability and richness of diurnal amphibians in 60 riparian zones in the state of Michoacán in central Mexico.Furthermore,we evaluated the potential of the endemic salamander Ambystoma ordinarium as a flagship species for the conservation of other native amphibian species.Results:We registered a total of 20 amphibian species in the diurnal assemblage,of which 10 species are considered at risk of extinction.We found that cropland was the most important land‑use type for explaining amphibian distribu‑tion in riparian zones,with negative effects on most amphibian species.We found no differences in species richness between zones with and without A.ordinarium.In riparian zones occupied by A.ordinarium,however,we found a higher number of species at risk of extinction.Conclusions:Our findings showed negative effects of croplands on the distribution of most amphibian species.The riparian zones are important for the maintenance of native diurnal amphibian communities and A.ordinarium can act as a flagship species for the conservation of threatened amphibian species.Marco Tulio Oropeza‑Sánchez Ireri Suazo‑Ortuño Julieta Benítez‑Malvido Erandi Monroy‑Hernández Roberto Munguía‑Steyer 2022Ecological Processes2022,11,1:0
10Evaluation of morbidity in Schistosoma mansoni-positive primary and secondary school children after four years of mass drug administration of praziquantel in western Kenya显示文摘Background:World Health Organization guidelines recommend preventive chemotherapy with praziquantel to control morbidity due to schistosomiasis.The primary aim of this cross-sectional study was to determine if 4 years of annual mass drug administration(MDA)in primary and secondary schools lowered potential markers of morbidity in infected children 1 year after the final MDA compared to infected children prior to initial MDA intervention.Methods:Between 2012 and 2016 all students in two primary and three secondary schools within three kilometers of Lake Victoria in western Kenya received annual mass praziquantel administration.To evaluate potential changes in morbidity we measured height,weight,mid-upper arm circumference,hemoglobin levels,abdominal ultrasound,and quality of life in children in these schools.This study compared two cross-sectional samples of Schistosoma mansoni egg-positive children:one at baseline and one at year five,1 year after the fourth annual MDA.Data were analyzed for all ages(6–18 years old)and stratified by primary(6–12 years old)and secondary(12–18 years old)school groups.Results:The prevalence of multiple potential morbidity markers did not differ significantly between the egg-positive participants at baseline and those at 5 years by Mann Whitney nonparametric analysis and Fisher’s exact test for continuous and categorical data,respectively.There was a small but significantly higher score in school-related quality of life assessment by year five compared to baseline by Mann Whitney analysis(P=0.048)in 13–18 year olds where malaria-negative.However,anemia was not positively impacted by four annual rounds of MDA,but registered a significant negative outcome.Conclusions:We did not detect differences in morbidity markers measured in a population of those infected or re-infected after multiple MDA.This could have been due to their relative insensitivity or a failure of MDA to prevent morbidity among those who remain infected.High malaria transmission in this area and/or a lack of suitable methods to measure the more subtle functional morbidities caused by schistosomiasis could be a factor.Further research is needed to identify and develop well-defined,easily quantifiable S.mansoni morbidity markers for this age group.Bernard O.Abudho Bernard Guyah Bartholomew N.Ondigo Eric M.Ndombi Edmund Ireri Jennifer M.Carter Diana K.Riner Nupur Kittur Diana M.S.Karanja Daniel G.Colley 2020Infectious Diseases of Poverty2020,9,3:0
11Prevalence of intestinal parasitic infections in certified food-handlers working in food establishments in the City of Nairobi,Kenya显示文摘Most intestinal parasites are cosmopolitan with the highest prevalence in the tropics and subtopics.Rural-to-urban migration rapidly increases the number of food eating places in towns and their environs.Some of these eating estabishments have poor sanitation and are overcrowded,facilitating disease transmission,especially through food-handling.Our investigations in Nairobi,therefore,were set to determine the presence of intestinal parasites in food-handlers with valid medical certificates.Direct and concentrated stool processing techniques were used.Chisquare test and ANOVA were used for data analysis.The parasites Ascaris lumbricoides,Entamoeba histolytica and Giardia lamblia were observed in certified food-handlers.Significant difference was found in parasite frequency by eating classes and gender (χ 2=9.49,P=0.73),(F=1.495,P=0.297),but not in parasite occurrence between age brackets (χ 2=6.99,P=0.039).The six-month medical certificate validity period may contribute significantly to the presence of intestinal parasites in certified food-handlers.Paul Kamau Penina Aloo Obudho Ephantus Kabiru Kepha Ombacho Bernard Langat Obadiah Mucheru Laban Ireri 2012The Journal of Biomedical Research2012,26,2:0
12Evaluation of the adjuvanticity of artemisinin with soluble Leishmania major antigens in BALB/c mice显示文摘Objective: To determine the adjuvant potential of artemisinin with a soluble leishmanial antigen in vaccinating BALB/c mice. Methods: Seventy two female BALB/c mice were randomly assigned into six groups. The mice were vaccinated with soluble Leishmania antigens (SLA) alone, artemisinin co-administered with SLA, SLA and Bacille Calmette Guérin (BCG) vaccine, and artemisinin and BCG alone. Unvaccinated mice formed the control group. The induction of cell-mediated immunity following vaccination was determined by measuring in vitro lymphocyte proliferation and the production of interleukin (IL)-4, IL-5 and gamma interferon (IFN-γ) determined by flow cytometry. Protection against L. major was determined by quantifying parasite burdens in L. major infected footpads using a limiting dilution assay and by measuring lesion sizes of the infected footpad compared to the contralateral uninfected footpad. Results: Mice receiving SLA plus artemisinin produced significantly high levels of IL-4 and IL-5 (P < 0.05) and low levels of IFN-γ, resulting in exacerbated disease. In addition, subcutaneous administration of SLA + artemisinin, artemisinin alone or SLA alone resulted in the development of large footpad swellings and high parasite loads that were comparable to those of the control unvaccinated mice (P > 0.05), resulting in exacerbated disease. Conclusion: These data suggest that artemisinin is not a suitable adjuvant for Leishmania vaccines. However, since artemisinin has been shown to be effective against Leishmania parasites in vitro and in vivo, further studies ought to be conducted to determine its immunochemotherapeutic potential when co-administered with Leishmania antigens.Albert Kimutai Willy K.
