1Eosinophilic gastroenteritis presenting as small bowel obstruction: A case report and review of the literature显示文摘Eosinophilic gastroenteritis is a rare disease of unknown etiology. It is characterized by eosinophilic infiltration of the bowel wall to a variable depth and symptoms associated with gastrointestinal tract. Recently, the authors experienced a case of eosinophilic gastroenteritis presenting as small bowel obstruction. A 51-year old woman was admitted to our hospital complaining of abdominal pain and vomiting. Physical examination revealed a distended abdomen with diffuse tenderness. Complete blood count showed mild leukocytosis without eosinophilia. Computed tomography confirmed a dilatation of the small intestine with ascites. An emergency laparotomy was performed for a diagnosis of peritonitis due to intestinal obstruction. Segmental resection of the ileum and end to end anastomosis were performed. Histologically, there was a dense infiltration of eosinophils throughout the entire thickness of ileal wall and eosinophilic enteritis was diagnosed. 2Human mesenchymal stem cells derived from umbilical cord and bone marrow exert immunomodulatory effects in different mechanisms显示文摘BACKGROUND Mesenchymal stem cells(MSCs)are an attractive tool to treat graft-versus-host disease because of their unique immunoregulatory properties.Although human bone marrow-derived MSCs(BM-MSCs)were the most widely used MSCs in cell therapy until recently,MSCs derived from human umbilical cords(UC-MSCs)have gained popularity as cell therapy material for their ethical and noninvasive collection.AIM To investigate the difference in mechanisms of the immunosuppressive effects of UC-MSCs and BM-MSCs.METHODS To analyze soluble factors expressed by MSCs,such as indolamine 2,3-dioxygenase,cyclooxygenase-2,prostaglandin E2 and interleukin(IL)-6,inflammatory environments in vitro were reconstituted with combinations of interferon-gamma(IFN-γ),tumor necrosis factor alpha and IL-1βor with IFN-γalone.Activated T cells were cocultured with MSCs treated with indomethacin and/or anti-IL-10.To assess the ability of MSCs to inhibit T helper 17 cells and induce regulatory T cells,induced T helper 17 cells were cocultured with MSCs treated with indomethacin or anti-IL-10.Xenogeneic graft-versus-host disease was induced in NOG mice(NOD/Shi-scid/IL-2Rγnull)and UC-MSCs or BM-MSCs were treated as cell therapies.RESULTS Our data demonstrated that BM-MSCs and UC-MSCs shared similar phenotypic characteristics and immunomodulation abilities.BM-MSCs expressed more indolamine 2,3-dioxygenase after cytokine stimulation with different combinations of IFN-γ,tumor necrosis factor alpha-αand IL-1βor IFN-γalone.UC-MSCs expressed more prostaglandin E2,IL-6,programmed death-ligand 1 and 2 in the in vitro inflammatory environment.Cyclooxygenase-2 and IL-10 were key factors in the immunomodulatory mechanisms of both MSCs.In addition,UC-MSCs inhibited more T helper 17 cells and induced more regulatory T cells than BM-MSCs.UC-MSCs and BM-MSCs exhibited similar effects on attenuating graft-versus-host disease.CONCLUSION UC-MSCs and BM-MSCs exert similar immunosuppressive effects with different mechanisms involved.These findings suggest that UC-MSCs have distinct immunoregulatory functions and may substitute BM-MBSCs in the field of cell therapy.Yunejin Song Jung-Yeon Lim Taekyu Lim Keon-Il Im Nayoun Kim Young-Sun Nam Young-Woo Jeon Jong Chul Shin Hyun Sun Ko In Yang Park Seok-Goo Cho 2020World Journal of Stem Cells2020,12,9:4

4Point-defect engineering of nanoporous CuBi_(2)O_(4) photocathode via rapid thermal processing for enhanced photoelectrochemical activity显示文摘Engineering point defects such as metal and oxygen vacancies play a crucial role in manipulating the electrical,optical,and catalytic properties of oxide semiconductors for solar water splitting.Herein,we synthesized nanoporous CuBi_(2)O_(4)(np-CBO)photocathodes and engineered their surface point defects via rapid thermal processing(RTP)in controlled atmospheres(O_(2),N_(2),and vacuum).We found that the O_(2)-RTP treatment of np-CBO increased the charge carrier density effectively without hampering the nanoporous morphology,which was attributed to the formation of copper vacancies(VCu).Further analyses revealed that the amounts of oxygen vacancies(Vo)and Cu^(1+)were reduced simultaneously,and the relative electrochemical active surface area increased after the O_(2)-RTP treatment.Notably,the point defects(VC_(u),Cu^(1+),and Vo)regulated np-CBO achieved a superb water-splitting photocurrent density of-1.81 m A cm^(-2) under simulated sunlight illumination,which is attributed to the enhanced charge transport and transfer properties resulting from the regulated surface point defects.Finally,the reversibility of the formation of the point defects was checked by sequential RTP treatments(O_(2)-N_(2)-O_(2)-N_(2)),demonstrating the strong dependence of photocurrent response on the RTP cycles.Conclusively,the surface point defect engineering via RTP treatment in a controlled atmosphere is a rapid and facile strategy to promote charge transport and transfer properties of photoelectrodes for efficient solar water-splitting.Li Qu Runfa Tan Arumugam Sivanantham Min Je Kang Yoo Jae Jeong Dong Hyun Seo Sungkyu Kim In Sun Cho 2022Journal of Energy Chemistry2022,31,8:1

11Hepatocellular carcinoma,decompensation,and mortality based on hepatitis C treatment:A prospective cohort study显示文摘BACKGROUND Prospective studies of the long-term outcomes of patients with hepatitis C virus(HCV)infection after treatment with interferon-based therapy(IBT)or directacting antivirals(DAA)are limited in many Asian countries.AIM To elucidate the incidences of hepatocellular carcinoma(HCC)and death/transplantation based on treatment with IBT or DAA,to compare the outcomes of the sustained virologic response(SVR)to IBT and DAA,and to investigate outcome-determining factors after SVR.METHODS This cohort included 2054 viremic patients(mean age,57 years;46.5%male;27.4%with cirrhosis)prospectively enrolled at seven hospitals between 2007 and 2019.They were classified as the untreated group(n=619),IBT group(n=578),and DAA group(n=857).Outcomes included the incidences of HCC and death/transplantation.The incidences of the outcomes for each group according to treatment were calculated using an exact method based on the Poisson distribution.A multivariate Cox regression analysis was performed to determine the factors associated with HCC or death/transplantation,followed by propensity score matching to confirm the results.RESULTS During a median of 4.1 years of follow-up,HCC and death/transplantation occurred in 113 and 206 patients,respectively,in the entire cohort.Compared with the untreated group,the incidences of HCC and death/transplantation were significantly lower in the IBT group[adjusted hazard ratio(aHR)0.47,95%CI:0.28-0.80 and aHR 0.28,95%CI:0.18-0.43,respectively]and the DAA group(aHR 0.58,95%CI:0.35-0.96,and aHR 0.19,95%CI:0.20-0.68,respectively).Among 1268 patients who attained SVR with IBT(n=451)or DAA(n=816),the multivariable-adjusted analysis showed no differences in the risks of HCC(HR 2.03;95%CI:0.76-5.43)and death/transplantation(HR 1.38;95%CI:0.55-3.49)between the two groups.This was confirmed by a propensity score-matching analysis.Independent factors for HCC after SVR were age,genotype 1,and the presence of cirrhosis.CONCLUSION Treatment and achieving SVR with either IBT or DAA significantly reduced the incidences of HCC and mortality in the Asian patients with HCV infection.The risks of HCC and mortality were not significantly different regardless of whether SVR was induced by IBT or DAA.Gwang Hyeon Choi Eun Sun Jang Young Seok Kim Youn Jae Lee In Hee Kim Sung Bum Cho Han Chu Lee Jeong Won Jang Moran Ki Hwa Young Choi Dahye Baik Sook-Hyang Jeong 2022World Journal of Gastroenterology2022,28,30:0
12Defect-rich spinel ferrites with improved charge collection properties for efficient solar water splitting显示文摘Spinel zinc ferrite(ZnFe_(2)O_(4),ZFO)is a potential photoanode material for photoelectrochemical(PEC)water splitting because of its ideal bandgap(1.9–2.1 eV)and superior chemical stability in aqueous solutions.However,the low charge collection efficiency significantly hinders the improvement in PEC activity.Herein,we report an ultrafast and effective flame activation route to enhance the charge collection properties of ZFO.First,high-temperature flame(>1300℃)facilitated surface and grain boundary diffusions,increasing the grain size and connectivity of the ZFO nanoparticles.Second,the reducing atmosphere of the flame enabled the formation of surface defects(oxygen vacancy and Fe^(2+)),thereby increasing the charge carrier density and surface adsorption sites.Significantly,these two factors promoted charge transport and transfer kinetics,resulting in a 10-fold increase in the photocurrent density over the unactivated ZFO.Furthermore,we deposited a thin Al_(2)O_(3)overlayer to passivate the ZFO surface and then the NiFeOx oxygen evolution catalyst(OEC)to expedite hole injection into the electrolyte.This surface passivation and OEC deposition led to a remarkable photocurrent density of~1 mA/cm^(2)at 1.23 V versus the reversible hydrogen electrode,which is the highest value among all reported ZFO photoanodes.Notably,the NiFeOx/Al_(2)O_(3)/F-ZFO photoanode achieved excellent photocurrent stability over 55 h(96%retention)and superior faradaic efficiency(FE>94%).Our flame activation method is also effective in improving the photocurrent densities of other spinel ferrites:CuFe_(2)O_(4)(93 times),MgFe_(2)O_(4)(16 times),and NiFe_(2)O_(4)(12 times).Runfa Tan Yoo Jae Jeong Qu Li Minje Kang In Sun Cho 2023Journal of Advanced Ceramics2023,12,3:0
