| 1 | Unraveling a genetic roadmap for improved taste in the domesticated apple显示文摘Although taste is an important aspect of fruit quality, an understanding of its genetic control remains elusive in apple and other fruit crops. In this study, we conducted genomic sequence analysis of 497 Malus accessions and revealed erosion of genetic diversity caused by apple breeding and possible independent domestication events of dessert and cider apples. Signatures of selection for fruit acidity and size, but not for fruit sugar content, were detected during the processes of both domestication and improvement. Furthermore, we found that single mutations in major genes affecting fruit taste, including Ma1, MdTDT, and MdSOT2, dramatically decrease malate, citrate, and sorbitol accumulation, respectively, and correspond to important domestication events. Interestingly, Ma1 was identified to have pleiotropic effects on both organic acid content and sugar:acid ratio, suggesting that it plays a vital role in determining fruit taste. Fruit taste is unlikely to have been negatively affected by linkage drag associated with selection for larger fruit that resulted from the pyramiding of multiple genes with minor effects on fruit size. | 10 | MicroBTC:Efficient,Flexible and Fair Micropayment for Bitcoin Using Hash Chains显示文摘While Bitcoin gains increasing popularity in different payment scenarios,the transaction fees make it difficult to be applied to micropayment.Given the wide applicability of micropayment,it is crucial for all cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin to provide effective support therein.In light of this,a number of low-cost micropayment schemes for Bitcoin have been proposed recently to reduce micropayment costs.Existing schemes,however,suffer from drawbacks such as high computation cost,inflexible payment value,and possibly unfair exchanges.The paper proposes two new micropayment schemes,namely the basic MicroBTC and the advanced MicroBTC,for Bitcoin by integrating the hash chain technique into cryptocurrency transactions.The basic MicroBTC realizes micropayment by exposing hash pre-images on the hash chain one by one,and it can also make arbitrary micropayments by exposing multiple hash pre-images.We further design the advanced MicroBTC to achieve non-interactive refund and efficient hash chain verification.We analyze the complexity and security of the both MicroBTC schemes and implement them using the Bitcoin source code.Extensive experiments were conducted to validate their performance,and the result showed that a micropayment session can be processed within about 18 ms for the basic MicroBTC and 9 ms for the advanced MicroBTC on a laptop.Both schemes enjoy great efficiency in computation and flexibility in micropayments,and they also achieve fairness for both the payer and the payee. | Zhi-Guo Wan Robert H.Deng David Lee Ying Li | 2019 | Journal of Computer Science & Technology2019,34,2: | 0 |
| 11 | Making a good thing better:enhancing password/PIN-based user authentication with smartwatch显示文摘Wearing smartwatches becomes increasingly popular in people’s lives.This paper shows that a smartwatch can help its bearer authenticate to a login system effectively and securely even if the bearer’s password has already been revealed.This idea is motivated by our observation that a sensor-rich smartwatch is capable of tracking the wrist motions of its bearer typing a password or PIN,which can be used as an authentication factor.The major challenge in this research is that a sophisticated attacker may imitate a user’s typing behavior as shown in previous research on keystroke dynamics based user authentication.We address this challenge by applying a set of machine learning and deep learning classifiers on the user’s wrist motion data that are collected from a smartwatch worn by the user when inputting his/her password or PIN.Our solution is user-friendly since it does not require users to perform any additional actions when typing passwords or PINs other than wearing smartwatches.We conduct a user study involving 51 participants so as to evaluate the feasibility and performance of our solution.User study results show that the best classifier is the Bagged Decision Trees,which yields 4.58% FRR and 0.12% FAR on a QWERTY keyboard,and 6.13% FRR and 0.16% FAR on a numeric keypad. | Bing Chang Yingjiu Li Qiongxiao Wang Wen-Tao Zhu Robert H.Deng | 2018 | Cybersecurity2018,1,1: | 0 |
| 12 | Extreme-phenotype GWAS unravels a complex nexus between apple(Malus domestica)red-flesh colour and internal flesh browning显示文摘The genetic link between apple red flesh(RF)coloration and the internal flesh browning disorder(FBD)is a major challenge when breeding high fruit quality RF apple cultivars.A genome-wide association study(GWAS)was conducted in a population of about 900 red-leaved seedlings to identify genomic regions and putative candidate genes using whole genome sequencing of the pools of extreme phenotypes(XP)for the RF colour coverage(using the weighted cortex index(WCI))and FBD.This study identified novel genomic regions contributing to WCI and FBD variation in the red-leaved seedlings.The FBD-associated regions were enriched for genes regulating senescence,heat shock proteins,cytochrome P450,ascorbate metabolism and pectin methyl esterases.Although there were no significant regions in common for WCI and FBD,there were several genes(e.g.MYB85,MYB66,ethylene insensitive 3,DNAJ heat shock protein,WRKY7,and NAC42)enriched commonly between the genomic regions associated with these traits,potentially underpinning the genetic connection between WCI and FBD.Some of the differentially expressed genes between the R6:MdMYB10 and white-fleshed‘control’apples resided within the GWAS hotspot for WCI(e.g.chalcone synthase,UDP-Glycosyl transferase)and FBD(e.g.Rho GTPase activating protein,lipoxygenase 1,phytoene synthase)–validating the XP-GWAS findings.Paralogs of several genes resided in the trait-associated genomic regions,suggesting that whole genome duplication plays an important role in the regulation of these traits.Adverse genetic correlations between WCI and sensory traits were observed,and strategies to develop FBD-free high fruit quality RF cultivars are discussed. | Satish Kumar Cecilia H.Deng Claire Molloy Chris Kirk Blue Plunkett Kui Lin-Wang Andrew Allan Richard Espley | 2022 | Fruit Research2022,2,1: | 0 |
