1Efficiency of the motion amplification device with viscous dampers and its application in high-rise buildings显示文摘After nearly a decade of application and investigation,a motion amplifi cation device with viscous dampers for energy dissipation has been recognized as an effective solution to mitigate wind or seismic excitation,especially for stiff structural systems.As a result of compensation of amplifi ed motion,it has been proved that the effi ciency of viscous damper largely depends on the motion amplifi cation device confi guration,particularly for device stiffness.In this paper,a 'scissor-jack' type of motion amplification device,called a 'toggle brace damper' system,is studied.It is demonstrated that the effi ciency of such a device reflected by its amplifi cation factor is not merely a function of its geometric confi guration,but is highly dependent on the support elements' stiffness as well,similar to the mechanism of a leverage arm.Accordingly,a mathematical model in terms of complex modulus of the viscous damper with consideration of the support brace's stiffness is established.The results indicate that the effi ciency of the motion amplif ication device with viscous dampers signif icantly depends on the stiffness of the support elements.Other parameters,such as toggle brace confi guration and damping values of the viscous damper,are studied and compared.As an application example,numerical analyses are conducted to study the dynamic performance of a 39-story offi ce tower installed with toggle brace dampers constructed on soft soil in a reclaimed area,under a combined effect of the vortex shedding of an adjacent existing 52-story building and earthquakes.The results show that viscous dampers with a motion amplifi cation system using a properly designed toggle brace device proved to be an effective solution to alleviate the external excitations.Henry C.Huang 2009Earthquake Engineering and Engineering Vibration2009,8,4:28
2Using SPOT 5 fusion-ready imagery to detect Chinese tamarisk(saltcedar)with mathematical morphological method显示文摘Chinese tamarisk(saltcedar)is a deciduous shrub that occurs widely across the Yellow River Delta in China.The spatial structure of Chinese tamarisk is believed to have an influence on the landscape and habitats of rare birds.In this study,first,Chinese tamarisk is detected using Canny edge detector and mathematical morphological operators based on SPOT 5 fusion-ready imagery.Then the numbers,areas,locations,and patch spacing of Chinese tamarisk patches are calculated.The experiments show that the detection accuracy of Chinese tamarisk patches is about 93.4%after the disconnection of connected patches.The distribution orientation of about 70%of the patches is approximately south-north.About 91%of the minimum distances among the patches are between 12.5 and 57.5 m.The rose graph indicates that the main azimuth between patches is north--northwest,and the second is northeast and southeast.The present study indicates that the integrating Canny edge detector with the algorithms for extracting circular and elliptical objects based on mathematical morphology is simple and effective for detecting Chinese tamarisk patches and is easy to identify the spatial structure of Chinese tamarisk patches,which reduces the time and labor for the visual interpretation of Chinese tamarisk patches.Q.S.Liu G.H.Liu C.Huang C.J.Xie 2014International Journal of Digital Earth2014,7,3:3
3Impact of exergaming on young children's school day energy expenditure and moderate-to-vigorous physical activity levels显示文摘Background: Although emerging research is demonstrating the potential health impact of exergaming,investigations have primarily been conducted in laboratory settings among small samples with short-term interventions.Information on the effectiveness of exergaming in underserved children's objective physical activity(PA) in population-based settings is also scarce.Moreover,most empirical studies have only included 1 type of exergame in the intervention.Therefore,this study's purpose was to investigate the long-term impact of a multigame exergaming intervention among underserved children integrated within school curricula.Specifically,this study examined the effect of exergaming on children's accelerometer-determined sedentary behavior(SB),light PA,moderate-to-vigorous PA(MVPA),and energy expenditure(EE) over 2 years as compared with regular physical education(PE) classes.Methods: A total of 261 second-and third-grade children(134 girls,127 boys; mean age 8.27 years) were recruited from 2 Texas elementary schools.Children's pre-test 3-day SB,light PA,MVPA,and EE at school were assessed in the fall of 2012.Participants were assigned to 1 of 2groups:(1) exergaming/PE group(125 min weekly of exergaming-based PA program) and (2) comparison group(125 min weekly of PE).PA(SB,light PA,and MVPA) and EE outcome variables were assessed again in 2013(post-test) and 2014(follow-up).Results: Significant time effects were observed for SB(F(1,162)=25.0,p<0.01,η~2= 0.14),light PA(F(1,162)=9.6,p<0.01,η~2= 0.06),and MVPA(F(1,162)=6.2,p=0.01,η~2= 0.04) but not for EE(F(1,162)=0.63,p>0.05,η~2= 0.004).Subsequent pairwise comparisons revealed significant increases from pre-to post-test for light PA(p<0.01),MVPA(p<0.01),and EE(p=0.02) with no changes in SB(p>0.05).Conversely,significant decreases occurred in light PA(p<0.01) from post-test to follow-up with no differences seen in MVPA(p=0.08) and EE(p=0.06) over the same time period.A significant increase was seen,however,for SB from post-test to follow-up.Conclusion: Exergaming PE can have the same positive effect on children's light PA,MVPA,and EE as regular PE.More research is necessary to discern how to promote long-term PA participation after conclusion of the intervention.Zan Gao Zachary Pope Jung Eun Lee David Stodden Nida Roncesvalles Denis Pasco Charles C.Huang Du Feng 2017Journal of Sport and Health Science2017,6,1:3
4Making small molecules in plants:A chassis for synthetic biology-based production of plant natural products显示文摘Plant natural products have been extensively exploited in food,medicine,flavor,cosmetic,renewable fuel,and other industrial sectors.Synthetic biology has recently emerged as a promising means for the cost-effective and sustainable production of natural products.Compared with engineering microbes for the production of plant natural products,the potential of plants as chassis for producing these compounds is underestimated,largely due to challenges encountered in engineering plants.Knowledge in plant engineering is instrumental for enabling the effective and efficient production of valuable phytochemicals in plants,and also paves the way for a more sustainable future agriculture.In this manuscript,we briefly recap the biosynthesis of plant natural products,focusing primarily on industrially important terpenoids,alkaloids,and phenylpropanoids.We further summarize the plant hosts and strategies that have been used to engineer the production of natural products.The challenges and opportunities of using plant synthetic biology to achieve rapid and scalable production of high-value plant natural products are also discussed.Xinyu Liu Peijun Zhang Qiao Zhao Ancheng C.Huang 2023Journal of Integrative Plant Biology2023,65,2:2

7Application of grouped detrital zircon analyses to determine provenance and closely approximate true depositional age:Early Cretaceous McMurray-Clearwater succession,Canada显示文摘In the Lower CretaceousMcMurray-Clearwater succession of the intracontinental Alberta Foreland Basin,Canada,detrital zircon U-Pb geochronology samples(referred to herein as DZ samples)have been used to interpret the strata as representing a paleo-continental-scale drainage system.However,the majority of DZ samples are relatively small(n≈90–100),and syndepositional DZ(i.e.,crystallization age<5 Ma older than depositional age)are rare.This has forced a reliance on dinocysts with long stratigraphic ranges to chronostratigraphically subdivide the McMurray-Clearwater succession rather than employing maximum depositional ages(MDAs)derived from DZ samples.Herein,43 DZ samples(taken from20 subsurface cores)are assigned to 1 of 5 stratigraphic intervals,and in each stratigraphic interval all associated DZ samples are combined to produce a grouped DZ sample.Analysis and comparison of individual and grouped DZ samples are used to(1)assess variability in provenance through time and space,and(2)assess the accuracy of chronostratigraphically subdividing the succession using MDAs.Along the main paleo-drainage axis,a comparison of dissimilarity between DZ samples from the same stratigraphic interval,as well as between stratigraphic intervals,reveals increasing average dissimilarity between individual DZ samples and their respective grouped DZ samplewith increasing spatial separation of samples.These data indicate that in the McMurray Depocenter some sediment is sourced from local tributaries,leading to geographical provenance variability.CalculatedMDAs for all 43 DZ samples and groupedMDAs(gMDAs)for the 5 grouped DZ samples are compared to an ash-derived absolute age and existing biostratigraphy.In theMcMurray Formation,comparison of MDAs to gMDAs shows that in basins with rare syndepositional DZ,the gMDA method improved depositional age estimates by transforming low-confidence MDAs(e.g.,youngest single grains)into high-confidence(multi-grain)gMDAs.In the Clearwater Formationwhere syndepositional DZ are plentiful(i.e.,>5%of the total DZ population),calculating maximumlikelihood ages fromgrouped DZ samples avoids negatively biased(i.e.,too young)MDAs.We suggest grouped DZ samples and the gMDA method be used in systems with multiple DZ samples from a well-defined stratigraphic interval as a means of assessing variability in provenancewithin a depositional system and for improving estimates of depositional ages using DZ.L.Rinke-Hardekopf S.E.Dashtgard C.Huang H.D.Gibson 2021Geoscience Frontiers2021,12,2:1

15Loss of Mgat5a-mediated N-glycosylation stimulates regeneration in zebrafish显示文摘Background:We are using genetics to identify genes specifically involved in hearing regeneration.In a large-scale genetic screening,we identified mgat5a,a gene in the N-glycosylation biosynthesis pathway whose activity negatively impacts hair cell regeneration.Methods:We used a combination of mutant analysis in zebrafish and a hair cell regeneration assay to phenotype the loss of Mgat5a activity in zebrafish.We used pharmacological inhibition of N-glycosylation by swansonine.We also used over-expression analysis by mRNA injections to demonstrate how changes in N-glycosylation can alter cell signaling.Results:We found that mgat5a was expressed in multiple tissues during zebrafish embryo development,particularly enriched in neural tissues including the brain,retina,and lateral line neuromasts.An mgat5a insertional mutation and a CRISPR/Cas9-generated truncation mutation both caused an enhancement of hair cell regeneration which could be phenocopied by pharmacological inhibition with swansonine.In addition to hair cell regeneration,inhibition of the N-glycosylation pathway also enhanced the regeneration of lateral line axon and caudal fins.Further analysis showed that N-glycosylation altered the responsiveness of TGF-beta signaling.Conclusions:The findings from this study provide experimental evidence for the involvement of N-glycosylation in tissue regeneration and cell signaling.Wuhong Pei Sunny C.Huang Lisha Xu Kade Pettie María Laura Ceci Mario Sánchez Miguel L.Allende Shawn M.Burgess 2016Cell Regeneration2016,5,1:0
16The contemporary role of metastasectomy in the management of metastatic RCC显示文摘Metastasectomy was initially described in the 1970s as a therapeutic strategy for patients with metastatic renal cell carcinoma.Since that time,systemic therapy options have grown exponentially,most recently with the introduction of immunotherapy.We aimed to review the contemporary literature regarding the role of metastasectomy in the era of targeted therapy and immunotherapy.Historically,metastasectomy has benefited patients with small volume,single-organ metastases,with favorable outcomes amongst younger,healthier patients with metastases to specific sites.The interplay between the employment of metastasectomy and systemic therapy has been limited to small,retrospective series with significant patient selection bias.More recently,investigators have conducted randomized controlled trials exploring the use of targeted therapies in the adjuvant setting after metastasectomy.Initial randomized data suggested no benefit in using sorafenib in this setting,and a subsequent study demonstrated possible harm in using pazopanib after metastasectomy.However,the role of other novel systemic therapies,including immunotherapy,nor the timing of use,have been meaningfully explored.Metastasectomy appears to be a valuable therapeutic option in the properly selected patient,requiring a multi-disciplinary management strategy and,pending future trials,a multimodal treatment approach.Zachary Feuer Jacob I.Taylor William C.Huang 2021Journal of Cancer Metastasis and Treatment2021,7,1:0
17Materials-oriented integrated design and construction of structures in civil engineering—A review显示文摘Design is a goal-oriented planning activity for creating products,processes,and systems with desired functions through specifications.It is a decision-making exploration:the design outcome may vary greatly depending on the designer’s knowledge and philosophy.Integrated design is one type of design philosophy that takes an interdisciplinary and holistic approach.In civil engineering,structural design is such an activity for creating buildings and infrastructures.Recently,structural design in many countries has emphasized a performance-based philosophy that simultaneously considers a structure’s safety,durability,serviceability,and sustainability.Consequently,integrated design in civil engineering has become more popular,useful,and important.Material-oriented integrated design and construction of structures(MIDCS)combine materials engineering and structural engineering in the design stage:it fully utilizes the strengths of materials by selecting the most suitable structural forms and construction methodologies.This paper will explore real-world examples of MIDCS,including the realization of MIDCS in timber seismic-resistant structures,masonry arch structures,long-span steel bridges,prefabricated/on-site extruded light-weight steel structures,fiber-reinforced cementitious composites structures,and fiber-reinforced polymer bridge decks.Additionally,advanced material design methods such as bioinspired design and structure construction technology of additive manufacturing are briefly reviewed and discussed to demonstrate how MIDCS can combine materials and structures.A unified strengthdurability design theory is also introduced,which is a human-centric,interdisciplinary,and holistic approach to the description and development of any civil infrastructure and includes all processes directly involved in the life cycle of the infrastructure.Finally,this paper lays out future research directions for further development in the field.Xing MING John C.HUANG Zongjin LI 2022Frontiers of Structural and Civil Engineering2022,16,1:0
18THERMODYNAMIC PARAMETERS IN THE NUCLEATION OF LIQUID IRON显示文摘By using of electrolytic pure iron, the specimens containing different oxide content were made in a Mo wire furnace. The DTA method was employed to measure the undercooling of liquid iron during solidification. The relations between the cleanness of liquid iron and undercooling, thermodynamic driving force of nucleation, the nucleus forming energy, as well as the critical radius of nucleus have been investigated.
