| 5 | Polymethylmethacrylate bone cements and additives: A review of the literature显示文摘Polymethylmethacrylate(PMMA) bone cement technology has progressed from industrial Plexiglass administration in the 1950 s to the recent advent of nanoparticle additives. Additives have been trialed to address problems with modern bone cements such as the loosening of prosthesis, high post-operative infection rates, and inflammatory reduction in interface integrity. This review aims to assess current additives used in PMMA bone cements and offer an insight regarding future directions for this biomaterial. Low index(< 15%) vitamin E and low index(< 5 g) antibiotic impregnated additives significantly address infection and inflammatory problems, with only modest reductions in mechanical strength. Chitosan(15% w/w PMMA) and silver(1% w/w PMMA) nanoparticles have strong antibacterial activity with no significant reduction in mechanical strength. | 6 | A STUDY OF STRUCTURE AND PROPERTY CHANGES OF BIODEGRADABLE POLYGLYCOLIDE AND POLY(GLYCOLIDE-co-LACTIDE)FIBERS DURING PROCESSING AND IN VITRO DEGRADATION显示文摘Structure and properties of bioabsorbable polyglycolide (PGA) and poly(glycolide-co-lactide) (PGA-co-PLA)fibers were investigated during several industrial processing stages and in vitro degradation by means of wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA) and mechanical property tests. In the orientation stage, the PGA fibers were found to have higher degrees of crystallinity than corresponding PGA-co-PLA samples produced under similar conditions. In the hot-stretching and post-annealing stages, after fibers were braided, PGA samples were found to gain more crystallinity and higher Tg than PGA-co-PLA samples. The higher crystallinity in PGA fibers resulted in a slower rate of degradation. DMA results showed that a great deal of internal stress that was built during orientation and hot-stretching stages was released in the post-annealing stage for all PGA and PGA-co-PLA samples. During earlier stages ofin vitro degradation, both PGA and PGA-co-PLA samples exhibited the typical cleavage-induced crystallization mechanism. | 7 | Mechanosignaling activation of TGFβmaintains intervertebral disc homeostasis显示文摘Intervertebral disc(IVD) degeneration is the leading cause of disability with no disease-modifying treatment.IVD degeneration is associated with instable mechanical loading in the spine, but little is known about how mechanical stress regulates nucleus notochordal(NC) cells to maintain IVD homeostasis. Here we report that mechanical stress can result in excessive integrin α_vβ_6-mediated activation of transforming growth factor beta(TGFβ), decreased NC cell vacuoles, and increased matrix proteoglycan production, and results in degenerative disc disease(DDD). Knockout of TGFβ type II receptor(TβRII) or integrin α_v in the NC cells inhibited functional activity of postnatal NC cells and also resulted in DDD under mechanical loading.Administration of RGD peptide, TGFβ, and α_vβ_6-neutralizing antibodies attenuated IVD degeneration. Thus,integrin-mediated activation of TGFβ plays a critical role in mechanical signaling transduction to regulate IVD cell function and homeostasis. | 10 | Treatment of hypogonadotropic male hypogonadism: Case-based scenarios显示文摘The aim of this study is to review four case-based scenarios regarding the treatment of symptomatic hypogonadism in men. The article is designed as a review of published literature. We conducted a Pub Med literature search for the time period of 1989-2014, concentrating on 26 studies investigating the efficacy of various therapeutic options on semen analysis, pregnancy outcomes, time to recovery of spermatogenesis, as well as serum and intratesticular testosterone levels. Our results demonstrated that exogenous testosterone suppresses intratesticular testosterone production, which is an absolute prerequisite for normal spermatogenesis. Cessation of exogenous testosterone should be recommended for men desiring to maintain their fertility. Therapies that protect the testis involve human chorionic gonadotropin(h CG) therapy or selective estrogen receptor modulators(SERMs), but may also include low dose h CG with exogenous testosterone. Off-label use of SERMs, such as clomiphene citrate, are effective for maintaining testosterone production long-term and offer the convenience of representing a safe, oral therapy. At present, routine use of aromatase inhibitors is not recommended based on a lack of longterm data. We concluded that exogenous testosterone supplementation decreases sperm production. It was determined that clomiphene citrate is a safe and effective therapy for men who desire to maintain fertility. | 13 | Patterns of genomic and phenomic diversity in wine and table grapes显示文摘Grapes are one of the most economically and culturally important crops worldwide,and they have been bred for both winemaking and fresh consumption.Here we evaluate patterns of diversity across 33 phenotypes collected over a 17-year period from 580 table and wine grape accessions that belong to one of the world’s largest grape gene banks,the grape germplasm collection of the United States Department of Agriculture.We find that phenological events throughout the growing season are correlated,and quantify the marked difference in size between table and wine grapes.By pairing publicly available historical phenotype data with genome-wide polymorphism data,we identify large effect loci controlling traits that have been targeted during domestication and breeding,including hermaphroditism,lighter skin pigmentation and muscat aroma.Breeding for larger berries in table grapes was traditionally concentrated in geographic regions where Islam predominates and alcohol was prohibited,whereas wine grapes retained the ancestral smaller size that is more desirable for winemaking in predominantly Christian regions.We uncover a novel locus with a suggestive association with berry size that harbors a signature of positive selection for larger berries.Our results suggest that religious rules concerning alcohol consumption have had a marked impact on patterns of phenomic and genomic diversity in grapes. | ZoëMigicovsky Jason Sawler Kyle M Gardner Mallikarjuna K Aradhya Bernard H Prins Heidi R Schwaninger Carlos D Bustamante Edward S Buckler Gan-Yuan Zhong Patrick J Brown Sean Myles | 2017 | Horticulture Research2017，4，1： | 3 |
