1Mediterranean Berries as Inhibitors of Lipid Oxidation in Porcine Burger Patties Subjected to Cooking and Chilled Storage显示文摘The efficiency of extracts from Arbutus unedo L.(AU),Crataegus monogyna L.(CM),Rosa canina L.(RC),and Rubus ulmifolius Schott.(RU)to inhibit lipid oxidation in raw,cooked and cooked and chilled(2°C/12 d)porcine burger patties,was investigated.The modification of the fatty acid profile during processing treatments(cooking and chilling),the quantitative measurements of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances(TBA-RS),and lipid-derived volatiles,were used as indicators of lipid oxidation.Polyunsaturated fatty acids(PUFA)gradually decreased during cooking and the subsequent storage of cooked burger patties with this decrease being significantly greater(P<0.05)in control patties than in those with added berry extracts.In accordance,the control patties showed significantly higher TBA-RS numbers and counts of lipid-derived volatiles in all treatments when compared to the berry-added counterparts(P<0.05).Results from the present work show,for the first time,that extracts from A.unedo,C.monogyna,R.canina,and R.ulmifolius are promising antioxidants which could enhance the nutritional,safety and sensory properties of porcine burger patties.Rui Ganho Mario Estévez Mónica Armenteros David Morcuende 2013Journal of Integrative Agriculture2013,12,11:16
2Diagnostic accuracy of endoscopic ultrasound in pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors: A systematic review and meta analysis显示文摘AIM: To detect pancreatic neuroendocrine tumors (PNETs) has been varied. This study is undertaken to evaluate the accuracy of endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) in detecting PNETs.METHODS: Only EUS studies confirmed by surgery or appropriate follow-up were selected. Articles were searched in Medline, Ovid journals, Medline nonindexed citations, and Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and Database of Systematic Reviews. Pooling was conducted by both fixed and random effects model). RESULTS: Initial search identified 2610 reference articles, of these 140 relevant articles were selected and reviewed. Data was extracted from 13 studies (n = 456) which met the inclusion criteria. Pooled sensitivity of EUS in detecting a PNETs was 87.2% (95%CI: 82.2-91.2). EUS had a pooled specificity of 98.0% (95%CI: 94.3-99.6). The positive likelihood ratio of EUS was 11.1 (95%CI: 5.34-22.8) and negative likelihood ratio was 0.17 (95%CI: 0.13-0.24). The diagnostic odds ratio, the odds of having anatomic PNETs in positive as compared to negative EUS studies was 94.7 (95%CI: 37.9-236.1). Begg-Mazumdar bias indicator for publication bias gave a Kendall's tau value of 0.31 (P = 0.16), indication no publication bias. The P for χ2 heterogeneity for all the pooled accuracy estimates was > 0.10. CONCLUSION: EUS has excellent sensitivity and specificity to detect PNETs. 3Application of Natural Antioxidants from Strawberry Tree(Arbutus unedo L.) and Dog Rose(Rosa canina L.) to Frankfurters Subjected to Refrigerated Storage显示文摘The effect of the addition of natural antioxidants from strawberry tree(Arbutus unedo L.;AU)and dog rose(Rosa canina L.;RC),in frankfurters elaborated with or without the addition of antioxidant additives(sodium ascorbate and nitrite)was studied.Six different types of experimental frankfurters were prepared depending on the addition of phenolic-rich extracts from RC and AU and the presence(P)or absence(C)of antioxidant additives.Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances(TBARS)-numbers significantly increased during chilled storage of C-frankfurters while additives and fruit phenolics inhibited lipid oxidation in P-frankfurters.The amount of protein carbonyls significantly increased in all treatments except in P-AU frankfurters.The discoloration process that occurred during the chilled storage was reduced by the addition of substances with proven antioxidant activity(P-frankfurters).Texture characteristics as hardness,springiness,cohesiveness and gumminess also suffered a significant deterioration in C-frankfurters.The use of phenolic fruit extracts in combination with traditional antioxidant additives is a successful strategy to enhance the oxidative stability of frankfurters without modifying their color and texture properties.Mónica Armenteros David Morcuende Sonia Ventanas Mario Estévez 2013Journal of Integrative Agriculture2013,12,11:4

15A culture model to analyze the acute biomaterial-dependent reaction of human primary neutrophils in vitro显示文摘Neutrophils play a pivotal role in orchestrating the immune system response to biomaterials,the onset and resolution of chronic inflammation,and macrophage polarization.However,the neutrophil response to biomaterials and the consequent impact on tissue engineering approaches is still scarcely understood.Here,we report an in vitro culture model that comprehensively describes the most important neutrophil functions in the light of tissue repair.We isolated human primary neutrophils from peripheral blood and exposed them to a panel of hard,soft,naturally-and synthetically-derived materials.The overall trend showed increased neutrophil survival on naturally derived constructs,together with higher oxidative burst,decreased myeloperoxidase and neutrophil elastase and decreased cytokine secretion compared to neutrophils on synthetic materials.The culture model is a step to better understand the immune modulation elicited by biomaterials.Further studies are needed to correlate the neutrophil response to tissue healing and to elucidate the mechanism triggering the cell response and their consequences in determining inflammation onset and resolution.Marinus A.Wesdorp Andrea Schwab Ezgi Irem Bektas Roberto Narcisi David Eglin Martin J.Stoddart Gerjo J.V.M.Van Osch Matteo D’Este 2023Bioactive Materials2023,,2:0
16Uncovering current pyroregions in Italy using wildfire metrics显示文摘Background:Pyrogeography is a major field of investigation in wildfire science because of its capacity to describe the spatial and temporal variations of fire disturbance.We propose a systematic pyrogeographic analytical approach to cluster regions on the basis of their pyrosimilarities.We employed the Affinity Propagation algorithm to cluster pyroregions using Italian landscape as a test bed and its current wildfire metrics in terms of density,seasonality and stand replacing fire ratio.A discussion follows on how pyrogeography varies according to differences in the human,biophysical,socioeconomic,and climatic spheres.Results:The algorithm identified seven different pyroregion clusters.Two main gradients were identified that partly explain the variability of wildfire metrics observed in the current pyroregions.First,a gradient characterized by increasing temperatures and exposure to droughts,which coincides with a decreasing latitude,and second,a human pressure gradient displaying increasing population density in areas at lower elevation.These drivers exerted a major influence on wildfire density,burnt area over available fuels and stand replacing,which were associated to warmdry climate and high human pressure.The study statistically highlighted the importance of a North–South gradient,which represents one of the most important drivers of wildfire regimes resulting from the variations in climatic conditions but showing collinearity with socioeconomic aspects as well.Conclusion:Our fully replicable analytical approach can be applied at multiple scales and used for the entire European continent to uncover new and larger pyroregions.This could create a basis for the European Commission to promote innovative and collaborative funding programs between regions that demonstrate pyrosimilarities.Mario Elia Vincenzo Giannico Davide Ascoli Juan Pablo Argañaraz Marina D’Este Giuseppina Spano Raffaele Lafortezza Giovanni Sanesi 2022Ecological Processes2022,11,1:0
17Short-term effects of obestatin on hexose uptake and triacylglycerol breakdown in human subcutaneous adipocytes显示文摘AIM To study complete dose-dependent effects of obestatin on lipolytic and glucose transport activities in human adipocyte preparations highly responsive to insulin.METHODS Adipocytes were prepared by liberase digestion from subcutaneous abdominal adipose tissue obtained from overweight subjects undergoing plastic surgery. The index of lipolytic activity was the glycerol released in the incubation medium, while glucose transport was assessed by [~3H]-2-deoxyglucose uptake assay.RESULTS When tested from 0.1 nmol/L to 1 μmol/L, obestatin did not stimulate glycerol release; it did not inhibit the lipolytic effect of isoprenaline and did not alter the insulin antilipolytic effect. Obestatin hardly activated glucose transport at 1 μmol/L only.
