| 2 | Association of comorbidities with increasing severity of peripheral neuropathy in diabetes mellitus显示文摘AIM: To analyze a large population of patients with diabetes and peripheral neuropathy(PN) to determine other meaningful comorbid etiologies for PN.METHODS: Peripheral Neuropathy is a common complication of type 1 and 2 diabetes mellitus;however,other potential causes for PN may be co-existing in patients with diabetes.A prospective cohort study was performed to assess patients with diabetes and PN.We compared patients having PN due solely to diabetes with patients possessing co-existing comorbidities,performing clinical(Toronto Clinical Scoring System and the Utah Early Neuropathy Scale),laboratory and electrophysiological assessments in all patients.RESULTS: Patients with either type 1 or 2 diabetes mellitus and co-existing comorbidities did not have more severe clinical or electrophysiological PN phenotypes overall.However,in patients with type 1 diabetes,presence of a lipid disorder was associated with greater PN severity.In type 2 diabetes patients,both a lipid disorder and cobalamin deficiency were associated with greater PN severity.There was no additive effect upon PN severity with presence of three or more comorbid etiologies.CONCLUSION: The presence of specific,and not general,comorbidities in patients with type 1 or 2 diabetes corresponds with greater PN severity. | Shafna Sachedina Cory Toth | 2013 | World Journal of Diabetes2013,4,4: | 7 |
| 3 | Physical activity after total knee arthroplasty: A critical review显示文摘Total knee arthroplasty(TKA) is the most commonly performed elective surgery in the United States. TKA typically improves functional performance and reduces pain associated with knee osteoarthritis. Little is known about the influence of TKA on overall physical activity levels. Physical activity, defined as 'any bodily movement produced by skeletal muscles that results in energy expenditure', confers many health benefits but typically decreases with endstage osteoarthritis. The purpose of this review is to describe the potential benefits(metabolic, functional, and orthopedic) of physical activity to patients undergoing TKA, present results from recent studies aimed to determine the effect of TKA on physical activity, and discuss potential sources of variability and conflicting results for physical activity outcomes. Several studies utilizing self-reported outcomes indicate that patients perceive themselves to be more physically active after TKA than they were before surgery. Accelerometry-based outcomes indicate that physical activity for patients after TKA remains at or below pre-surgical levels. Several different factors likely contributed to these variable results, including the use of different instruments, duration of follow-up, and characteristics of the subjects studied. Comparison to norms, however, suggests that daily physical activity for patients following TKA may fall short of healthy agematched controls. | 6 | Genome and metabolic engineering in non-conventional yeasts:Current advances and applications显示文摘Microbial production of chemicals and proteins from biomass-derived andwaste sugar streams is a rapidly growing area of research and development.While the model yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae is an excellent host for the conversion of glucose to ethanol,production of other chemicals from alternative substrates often requires extensive strain engineering.To avoid complex and intensive engineering of S.cerevisiae,other yeasts are often selected as hosts for bioprocessing based on their natural capacity to produce a desired product:for example,the efficient production and secretion of proteins,lipids,and primary metabolites that have value as commodity chemicals.Even when using yeasts with beneficial native phenotypes,metabolic engineering to increase yield,titer,and production rate is essential.The non-conventional yeasts Kluyveromyces lactis,K.marxianus,Scheffersomyces stipitis,Yarrowia lipolytica,Hansenula polymorpha and Pichia pastoris have been developed as eukaryotic hosts because of their desirable phenotypes,including thermotolerance,assimilation of diverse carbon sources,and high protein secretion.However,advanced metabolic engineering in these yeasts has been limited.This review outlines the challenges of using non-conventional yeasts for strain and pathway engineering,and discusses the developed solutions to these problems and the resulting applications in industrial biotechnology. | Ann-Kathrin Lobs Cory Schwartz Ian Wheeldon | 2017 | Synthetic and Systems Biotechnology2017,2,3: | 3 |
| 7 | Dietary zinc and metallothionein on small intestinal disaccharidases activity in mice显示文摘AIM: To examine the effect of increasing dietary zinc (Zn) intake and the lack of metallothionein (MT) expression on activity of small intestinal disaccharidases. METHODS: MT-Ⅰ and Ⅱ knockout (MT-/-) and wild-type (MT+/+) female mice at 3.5 wk of age were randomly fed with a diet containing 2 (2 Zn), 15 (15 Zn) or 50 (50 Zn) mg Zn/kg (n = 8/group/genotype) for 5 wk. Small intestinal segments (duodenum, jejunum and ileum) were collected and either fixed in 10% formalin for histological analysis or snap frozen in liquid nitrogen for sucrase, lactase and maltase activity analyses.RESULTS: Plasma Zn was significantly (P < 0.05) lower (33%) in MT-/- compared with MT+/+ mice fed the 2 Zn diet. Villus height and crypt depth were increased by approximately 15% in MT+/+ mice compared with MT-/- mice. Duodenal disaccharidase activities were significantly higher in MT+/+ compared with MT-/- mice particularly in those fed the 2 Zn diet. For the 50 Zn diet, jejunal sucrase and lactase activities were significantly higher in MT-/- (13 313 ± 2314; 4107 ± 364 μmol glucose/well/min/g tissue, respectively) compared with MT+/+ mice (7054 ± 608; 1818 ± 174). Similarly, ileal lactase activities were higher in MT-/- (1480 ± 192) compared with MT+/+ (629 ± 353) mice particularly those fed the 2 Zn diet. CONCLUSION: Increasing dietary Zn has little effect on disaccharidases activity in MT wild-type mice. | 15 | Esophageal lichen planus:A case report and review of the literature显示文摘Esophageal involvement by lichen planus(ELP),previously thought to be quite rare,is a disease much more common in women and frequently the initial manifestation of mucocutaneous lichen planus(LP).Considering that the symptoms of ELP do not present in a predictable manner,ELP is perhaps more under-recognized than rare.To date,four cases of squamous cell carcinoma in association with ELP have been reported,suggesting that timely and accurate diagnosis of ELP is of importance for appropriate follow-up.In this case report,a 69-year-old female presented with dysphagia and odynophagia.She reported a history of oral LP but had no active oral or skin lesions.Endoscopic examination revealed severe strictures and web-like areas in the esophagus.Histologic examination demonstratedextensive denudation of the squamous epithelium,scattered intraepithelial lymphocytes,rare eosinophils and dyskeratotic cells.Direct immunofluorescence showed rare cytoid bodies and was used to exclude other primary immunobullous disorders.By using clinical,endoscopic,and histologic data,a broad list of differential diagnoses can be narrowed,and the accurate diagnosis of ELP can be made,which is essential for proper treatment and subsequent follow-up. | Jennifer A Nielsen Robert M Law Keith H Fiman Cory A Roberts | 2013 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2013,19,14: | 1 |
