1Total thyroidectomy is safer with identification of recurrent laryngeal nerve显示文摘Objective:To investigate the effect of recurrent laryngeal nerve(RLN)identification on the complications after total thyroidectomy and lobectomy.Methods:Total 134 consecutive patients undergoing total thyroidectomy or thyroid lobectomy from January 2003 to November 2004 were investigated retrospectively.Patients were divided into two groups:RLN identified (Group A)or not(Group B).The two groups were compared for RLN injury and hypocalcaemia.Results:The numbers of patients and nerves at risk were 71 and 129 in Group A,and 63 and 121 in Group B,respectively.RLN injury in Group A(0)was sig- nificantly lower than that in Group B(57.9%)patients,75.8%nerves)for the numbers of patients(P=0.016)and nerves at risk (P=0.006).Temporary hypocalcaemia was significantly higher in Group A than in Group B(1424.1%vs 610.3%,P=0.049). 2Biochar and its importance on nutrient dynamics in soil and plant显示文摘Biochar,an environmentally friendly soil conditioner,is produced using several thermochemical processes.It has unique characteristics like high surface area,porosity,and surface charges.This paper reviews the fertilizer value of biochar,and its effects on soil properties,and nutrient use efficiency of crops.Biochar serves as an important source of plant nutrients,especially nitrogen in biochar produced from manures and wastes at low temperature(≤400℃).The phosphorus,potassium,and other nutrient contents are higher in manure/waste biochars than those in crop residues and woody biochars.The nutrient contents and pH of biochar are positively correlated with pyrolysis temperature,except for nitrogen content.Biochar improves the nutrient retention capacity of soil,which depends on porosity and surface charge of biochar.Biochar increases nitrogen retention in soil by reducing leaching and gaseous loss,and also increases phosphorus availability by decreasing the leaching process in soil.However,for potassium and other nutrients,biochar shows inconsistent(positive and negative)impacts on soil.After addition of biochar,porosity,aggregate stability,and amount of water held in soil increase and bulk density decreases.Mostly,biochar increases soil pH and,thus,influences nutrient availability for plants.Biochar also alters soil biological properties by increasing microbial populations,enzyme activity,soil respiration,and microbial biomass.Finally,nutrient use efficiency and nutrient uptake improve with the application of biochar to soil.Thus,biochar can be a potential nutrient reservoir for plants and a good amendment to improve soil properties.Md Zahangir Hossain Md Mezbaul Bahar Binoy Sarkar Scott Wilfred Donne Young Sik Ok Kumuduni Niroshika Palansooriya Mary Beth Kirkham Saikat Chowdhury Nanthi Bolan 2020Biochar2020,2,4:15
3Long-term vision-threatening complications of phakic intraocular lens implantation for high myopia显示文摘AIM:To report the long-term vision-threatening complications in patients who underwent phakic intraocular lens(pIOLs)implantation for high myopia.METHODS:Thisstudywasdesignedfromaconsecutive series of phakic intraocular lens complication and corrective surgeries.Sixteen eyes of 13 patients had implantation of phakic intraocular lens for correction high myopia and developed serious complications have been included in this study.The mean age of patients was 38.6±6.35y(range 32-50y)and the mean time of history of pIOL implantation for high myopia was 6±2y(range 2-10y).Before corrective surgery,best spectaclecorrective visual acuity(BSCVA)ranged from perception to 20/200 in the eyes in which severe complications occurred.RESULTS:Corneal decompensation occurred in 12eyes of 9 high myopic patients after anterior chamber pIOL implantation.Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment(RRD)occurred in 4 eyes of 4 high myopic patients following anterior chamber and posterior chamber pIOL implantation.Patients with corneal decompensation,had combined procedures consisting of pIOL removal and penetrating keratoplasty(PKP).Removals of pIOL,phacoemulsification and pars plana vitrectomy(PPV)with silicone oil tamponade were performed in patients with RRD.After corrective surgeries,all patients but one(P+,patient 2,right eye)achieved moderate BSCVA ranged from 20/200 to 20/50 at the last visit.CONCLUSION:Phakic IOLs may be effective for thecorrection of high myopia.Although these IOLs may have severe complications and it affects safety and efficacy of this surgery.As seen here,corneal decompensation and rhegmatogenous retinal detachment are possible postoperative vision-threatening complications of phakic IOLs.Patients must be carefully examined before and after surgery for possible endothelial cell loss and vitreoretinal problems.Isil Bahar Sayman Muslubas Baran Kandemir Ayse Yesim Aydin Oral Suleyman Kugu Metin Dastan 2014International Journal of Ophthalmology(English edition)2014,7,2:14

5Solid amine sorbents for CO_(2) capture by chemical adsorption: A review显示文摘Amines are well-known for their reversible reactions with CO_(2),which make them ideal for CO_(2) capture from several gas streams,including flue gas.In this respect,selective CO_(2) absorption by aqueous alkanolamines is the most mature technology but the process is energy intensive and has also corrosion problems.Both disadvantages can be diminished to a certain extent by chemical adsorption of CO_(2) selectively.The most important element of the chemical adsorption of CO_(2) involves the design and development of a suitable adsorbent which consist of a porous support onto which an amine is attached or immobilized.Such an adsorbent is often called as solid amine sorbent.This review covers solid amine-based studies which are developed and published in recent years.First,the review examines several different types of porous support materials,namely,three mesoporous silica(MCM-41,SBA-15 and KIT-6)and two polymeric supports(PMMA and PS)for CO_(2) adsorption.Emphasis is given to the synthesis,modifications and characterizations-such as BET and PXRD data-of them.Amination of these supports to obtain a solid amine sorbent through impregnation or grafting is reviewed comparatively.Focus is given to the adsorption mechanisms,material characteristics,and synthesis methods which are discussed in detail.Significant amount of original data are also presented which makes this review unique.Finally,relevant CO_(2) adsorption(or equilibrium)capacity data,and cyclic adsorption/desorption performance and stability of important classes of solid amine sorbents are critically reviewed.These include severa PEI or TEPA impregnated adsorbents and APTES-grafted systems.Elif ErdalÜnveren Bahar Ozmen Monkul S¸erife Sarıoglan Nesrin Karademir Erdogan Alper 2017Petroleum2017,3,1:8
6Fetal programming of polycystic ovary syndrome显示文摘Polycystic ovary syndrome(PCOS) is a common endocrine disorder that affects up to 6.8% of reproductive age women.Experimental research and clinical observations suggest that PCOS may originate in the very early stages of development,possibly even during intrauterine life.This suggests that PCOS is either genetically-transmittedor is due to epigenetic alterations that develop in the intrauterine microenvironment.Although familial cases support the role of genetic factors,no specific genetic pattern has been defined in PCOS.Several candidate genes have been implicated in its pathogenesis,but none can specifically be implicated in PCOS development.Hypotheses based on the impact of the intrauterine environment on PCOS development can be grouped into two categories.The first is the 'thrifty' phenotype hypothesis,which states that intrauterine nutritional restriction in fetuses causes decreased insulin secretion and,as a compensatory mechanism,insulin resistance.Additionally,an impaired nutritional environment can affect the methylation of some specific genes,which can also trigger PCOS.The second hypothesis postulates that fetal exposure to excess androgen can induce changes in differentiating tissues,causing the PCOS phenotype to develop in adult life.This review aimed to examine the role of fetal programming in development of PCOS.Esra Bahar Gur Muammer Karadeniz Guluzar Arzu Turan 2015World Journal of Diabetes2015,6,7:4
7Comparison of contrast sensitivity and visual acuity between deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty and penetrating keratoplasty in patients with keratoconus显示文摘AIM: To evaluate postoperative visual acuity and contrast sensitivity results following deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK) and penetrating keratoplasty (PK) in patients with keratoconus (KC). METHODS: All the patients' records with KC who had PK or DALK surgery between May 2010 and May 2011 were retrospectively reviewed. Sixty patients who underwent successful corneal transplantation for KC: 30 eyes underwent DALK and 30 eyes underwent PK were included in this study. Preoperative and postoperative mean logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution (logMAR) uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), logMAR best spectacle-corrected visual acuity (BSCVA) and intraocular pressure (IOP) were evaluated. Contrast sensitivity tests (CS) were done preoperative and 2 months after all sutures had removed. All surgeries were performed under regional anesthesia (retrobulbar anesthesia) by 1 surgeon (B.K.) who was experienced in penetrating and lamellar keratoplasty techniques. RESULTS: The mean age of the DALK group was 29.67±4.95 (range 18-40) years and the PK group was 28.7±3.53 (range 18-39) years. Preoperatively there was no significant difference in the logMAR UCVA, logMAR BSCVA and IOP between the DALK (1.281±0.56; 0.97±0.85; 12.07±2.12mmHg) and PK (1.34±0.21; 0.98±0.21; 13±2.12mmHg) groups. One-year after surgery there was no significant difference in the mean logMAR UCVA and IOP between the DALK (0.46±0.37; 11.73±2.1mmHg) and PK (0.38±0.21; 12±2.12mmHg) groups. The mean contrast sensitivity was evaluated by CC-100 Topcon LCD at 1.5, 2.52, 4.23, 7.10 and 11.91 cycles per degree (cs/deg) spatial frequencies before and 2 months after the all sutures had removed. CONCLUSION: All patients with keratoconus in both DALK and PK groups performed good visual function postoperatively. The mean contrast sensitivity increased considerably at all spatial frequencies compared with preoperative levels in the DALK and PK groups. 8Differences in parents of pediatric liver transplantation and chronic liver disease patients显示文摘BACKGROUND With advancements in the treatment of chronic liver disease(CLD),including liver transplantation(LT),quality of life and satisfaction after LT have become an important issue for pediatric patients and their parents.More evidence-based information is needed to describe and assess the impact of pediatric CLD on parents and the satisfaction of parents with treatment to better understand their needs.AIM To assess the satisfaction of parents of pediatric LT patients and that of parents of pediatric CLD patients METHODS During this survey,data were collected from parents of pediatric patients who underwent LT between January 2010 and April 2017(LT group;n=91)and parents of pediatric patients with chronic liver disease(CLD group;n=94).Group comparisons were made based on the pediatric health-related quality of life(PedsQL)health care parent satisfaction scale,impact on family scale(IFS)and demographic characteristics.The PedsQL was administered to parents during a phone interview and the results were used to assess the health carerelated satisfaction of parents.The IFS was used to assess the impact of the child’s CLD status on the family.Demographic variables such as education level(elementary vs middle vs high vs university),monthly income(low vs middle vs high),and place of residence(village vs town vs city)were compared between CLD and LT parent groups.Finally,PedsQL and IFS results were also analyzed according to demographic variables.RESULTS A total of 185 parents aged 19 to 65 years were included.There were statistically significant differences between the LT and CLD groups in terms of career(P<0.001),monthly income(P=0.016),and education level(P=0.041).According to the PedsQL results,family inclusion,communication,technical skills,emotional needs,and overall satisfaction were significantly different between the groups;the LT group had consistently higher scores(P<0.001).Additionally,scores for the IFS parameters of financial impact,familial-social impact,personal strain,and total impact were consistently higher for the LT group(P<0.001).There were statistically significant relationships between education level,monthly income,and place of residence according to the IFS results but not the PedsQL results.There were inverse relationships between the difficulties that parents experience because of their child’s health and education levels,monthly income,and place of residence.However,no relationship was found between education level,monthly income,or place of residence and satisfaction with health care services provided in the hospital according to the PedsQL results.CONCLUSION Parents of children who underwent LT were very satisfied with the health care services provided to their children.However,they had more difficulties than parents of children with CLD.Sami Akbulut Gulsen Gunes Hasan Saritas Bahar Aslan Yunus Karipkiz Khaled Demyati Sukru Gungor Sezai Yilmaz 2020World Journal of Clinical Cases2020,8,11:3
9Storage in ice incorporated antimelanotic agent and its effects on melanosis and quality of giant red shrimp(Aristaeomorpha foliacea)显示文摘Since melanosis starts very quickly after catching in shrimps,it is immediately treated with an antimelanotic agent.Shrimps are transported to land with ice.In this study,it was aimed to combine these two applications and to produce antimelanotic added ice and to preserve the shrimps in this ice.In ice production,4-hexylresorcinol and sodium metabisulphite were used at ratios 0.0025%and 0.625%,respectively.Shrimp(Aristaeomorpha foliacea)dipped in 4-hexylresorcinol and sodium metabisulphite solutions at ratios 0.005%and 1.25%,respectively,and shrimp kept in normal ice were considered as controls.The melanosis scores of the shrimp stored in ice containing antimelanotics were found to be lower than those of the shrimp dipped into antimelanotics.This situation showed that storage in ice containing antimelanotic agent delayed the formation of melanosis in shrimps.The highest TVB-N and TMA-N values were determined in the control group that did not contain antimelanotic agents.Shrimp stored in ice containing 4-hexylresorcinol had lower TVB-N and TMA-N values compared to sulphide added ice.The highest pH values were determined in shrimps dipped in 4-hexylresorcinol solution and in the control group.The pH values of shrimps treated with 4-hexylresorcinol were higher than those of shrimps treated with sulphite.The incorporation of antimelanotics to ice prevented the softening of shrimps and preserved the texture.Sodium metabisulphite and 4-hexylresorcinol showed a microbial inhibition effect in shrimp,and this effect was more clearly observed by storage in ice containing antimelanotic agent.Nalan Gokoglu Bahar Gumus Afsin Ceylan Mehmet Gokoglu 2022Food Bioscience2022,46,2:3

11Isolation and diagnosis of Helicobacter pylori by a new method: Microcapillary culture显示文摘AIM:To investigate the performance of the microcapillary culture method(MCM) in Helicobacter pylori(H.pylori) isolation and diagnosis.METHODS:Microcapillary culture(MC),classical culture(CC),rapid urease(CLO) test,and histopathologic examination(HE) were performed with biopsy samples.Homogenized biopsy samples were loaded into capillary tubes and incubated for 48 h at 37 ℃ without providing a microaerophilic environment.Additionally,three or four loops of the homogenized sample were inoculated in a ready-to-use selective medium(Becton Dickinson,Helicobacter Agar,Modified) specific for the isolation of H.pylori and incubated at 37 ℃ in a microaerophilic atmosphere provided by Campy Gen(Becton Dickinson,Gas Pack).Bacteria reproducing in microcapillary tubes were evaluated in an inverted microscope and also were evaluated after performing a CC with the content.Results obtained by CC,CLO test,and HE were compared with those of MC.The diagnostic performances of the methods used in this study were evaluated for specificity,sensitivity,positive predictive value(PPV),negative predictive value(NPV),and CI.RESULTS:H.pylori was found positive by CLO test +HE and/or CC culture in 26 patient antrum and corpus biopsy samples.In 25(25/26) patient biopsy samples,H.pylori was isolated by MCM,whereas in only 14(14/26) patient biopsy samples,H.pylori was isolatedby CC.CLO test and HE were found positive in 17(17/26) patient biopsy samples.Comparing the results of the isolation of H.pylori by MCM,CC,CLO test,and HE,the sensitivity of the MCM was found as 96%,the specificity as 80%,the PPV as 83%,the NPV as 95%,and the 95%CI as 0.76(χ2 =31.51,P < 0.01) whereas the sensitivity of the CC was found as 54%(χ2 =19.15,P < 0.01),and the sensitivity of the CLO test and HE were found as 65%(χ2 =25.26,P < 0.01).CONCLUSION:This new microcapillary cultivation method for H.pylori has high diagnostic sensitivity compared with CC,HE,and CLO tests.Adil M Allahverdiyev Melahat Bagirova Reyhan Caliskan Hrisi Bahar Tokman Hayat Aliyeva Gokce Unal Olga Nehir Oztel Emrah Sefik Abamor Hilal Toptas Pelin Yuksel Fatma Kalayci Mustafa Aslan Yusuf Erzin Kadir Bal Bekir S Kocazeybek 2015World Journal of Gastroenterology2015,21,9:2

13Effect of purification,dehydration,and coagulation processes on the optical parameters of biological tissues显示文摘In this study,the effects of purification,dehydration,and coagulation processes on the absorption and reduced scattering coefficients of chicken liver tissues have been investigated by using a single integrating sphere system.The purification process performed on the tissue samples to remove blood residue has been found to cause a slight change in the optical parameters.Although the dehydration process brings about an increase in the absorption coefficient due to the water loss,no direct relationship has been observed between the reduced scattering coefficient and the dehydration level of the tissue.In addition,it has been observed that there was a relatively small increase in the absorption coefficient and a significant increase in the reduced scattering coefficient after the coagulation process.Therefore,it can be said that the optical penetration depth decreased significantly after dehydration and coagulation processes unlike blood purification.Moreover,fluence rate distributions inside the fresh,blood purified,dehydrated,and coagulated tissue models have been investigated by using the Monte Carlo modeling of photon transport in multilayered tissues simulation code.Halil Arslan Bahar Pehlivanoz 2021Chinese Optics Letters2021,19,1:2
14Prevalence of visual impairment and related factors in Nangarhar Province of Afghanistan:a cross sectional study显示文摘AIM: To determine the prevalence, main causes, and related factors of visual impairment(VI) among people aged 50 y and over in Jalalabad City and four surrounding districts of Nangarhar Province of Afghanistan. METHODS: The data for the population based crosssectional study was collected in 2015. The calculated sample size was 1353, allocated to urban-rural strata using probability proportion to size method. At the end of the study, 1281 people participated in to the study. VI was defined as presenting visual acuity(VA) of less than 6/18 and blindness as VA less than 3/60 in the better eye by using Snellen chart only. Data was analyzed using IBM SPSS 21.0 software.RESULTS: The prevalence of VI was 22.6%(95%CI, 20%-25%) of which 13.9%(95%CI, 12%-16%) was low vision and 8.7%(95%CI, 7%-10%) was blindness. The most common causes of the VI were cataract(52.8%), followed by uncorrected refractive error(URE)(26.9%) and glaucoma(8.6%). Number one cause of the low vision was URE(42%), followed by cataract, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration(AMD) and diabetic retinopathy(DR), while for blindness they are cataract(72%), other posterior segment disorders, glaucoma, URE and AMD. Illiteracy, bad economic status, hypertension and overweight were factors independently associated with both VI and low vision, whereas, age, illiteracy, bad economic status, hypertension and using of sunglasses were independently associated with blindness.CONCLUSION: Cataract, URE, glaucoma, AMD and DR are the leading causes of VI and blindness in the study area. They are mostly avoidable.
