7Factors associated with mortality in congenital malformations of the gastrointestinal tract in a tertiary center in Senegal显示文摘Objective Patients with congenital malformations(CMs)of the gastrointestinal tract(GIT)have a very high mortality. However, the literature on the factors associated with mortality in these patients is scarce in sub-Saharan Africa. The aim of this study is to identify independent risk factors for mortality in patients with CMs of the GIT at our pediatric surgical department. Methods We conducted a retrospective analysis of cases with CMs of the GIT managed at a tertiary center from 2018 to 2021.Patients were subdivided into two groups based on the outcomes, and variables with a significant difference were analyzed by logistic regression. Results Our review included 226 patients,63 of whom died(27.88%).Patient age ranged from 0 to 15 years.Taking into account statistical significance, mortality was more frequent in neonates than in older patients(57.30%vs 6.15%),in patients coming out of the Dakar area than in those from the Dakar area(43.75%vs 19.18%),in patients with abnormal prenatal ultrasound than in those with normal ultrasound(100%vs 26.67%),in premature children than in those born at term(78.57%vs 21.87%),in patients with an additional malformation than in those with an isolated malformation(69.23%vs 25.35%),and in those with intestinal, esophageal, duodenal and colonic atresia than in those with other diagnoses(100%,89%,56.25%and 50%,respectively).Referred patients died more than those who changed hospitals or came from home(55.29%vs 25%and 9.09%,respectively).On multivariable logistic regression, two independent factors of mortality were identified:presence of associated malformation[odds ratio(OR)=13.299;95%Confidence interval(CI)1.370 to 129.137]and diagnosis of esophageal atresia(OR=46.529;95%CI 5.828 to 371.425).Conclusion The presence of an associated malformation or diagnosis of esophageal atresia increases mortality in patients with CMs of the GIT in our environment.Tshibwid A Zeng Papa Alassane Mbaye Doudou Gueye Ndèye Fatou Seck Ibrahima Bocar Wellé Rosalie Niang Youssouph Diedhiou Mbaye Fall Ndèye Aby Ndoye Aloïse Sagna Oumar Ndour Gabriel Ngom 2023World Journal of Pediatric Surgery2023,6,1:0
8Knowledge,attitudes and practices concerning epilepsy among nurses and midwives working in primary health care settings in Ouagadougou of Burkina Faso显示文摘Background In developing countries, there is a lack of epilepsy knowledge among health workers. The objective of this study was to assess the knowledge, attitude and practice concerning epilepsy among nurses and midwives working in primary health care settings in Ouagadougou. Methods We carried out a cross-sectional study in the health districts of Ouagadougou from August 1st to September 15th,2017.All nurses and midwives working in three health districts were included in this study. Results A total of 213 participants with a mean age of 39.5 years were included in the survey;79.81%of them had a general certification in secondary education and 62%had a professional experience of more than 10 years.About 99%of the participants had not received training on epilepsy-related care during the last six months. In addition,74.5%of the participants had a good knowledge on epilepsy and 65%had a good practice toward epilepsy. The level of knowledge was associated with the workplace, years of training, and the professional experience. The level of knowledge about epilepsy was also associated with the level of education, while there was a significant link between professional status and nurses’level of practice in the management of seizures. Conclusions Efforts must be made to provide continuing education for nurses in order to improve their knowledge on epilepsy.Alfred Anselme Dabilgou Alassane Dravé Julie Marie Adeline Wendlamita Kyelem Fatimata Kinda Christian Napon Athanase Millogo Jean Kaboré 2023Acta Epileptologica2023,6,2:0
9Knowledge and attitudes of driver license applicants and instructors about driving of patients with epilepsy in Burkina Faso显示文摘Background:Epilepsy is the most common neurological disease in the world. The objective of the study was to determine the knowledge, attitude and practice of driver's license applicants and instructors in driving schools on epilepsy in Burkina Faso.Method:This cross-sectional study was carried out from January 7th to March 7th 2020 in 21 driving schools approved by the National Driver License Authority in the city of Ouagadougou.Fifteen driver applicants and one instructor were selected in each driving school, resulting in a total of 315 driver applicants and 21 instructors in the study. Results:The mean age of participants was 29.91±7.63 years. One of the driver applicants included in the study was once experienced a seizure attack. All respondents had heard of epilepsy. The main source of epilepsy information was from family(42.5%).Two hundred and twenty-six respondents(673%)had witnessed an epileptic seizure.A majority of participants(55.9%)believed that persons with epilepsy be not permitted to drive a motor vehicle.About 44.0% of participants thought that people with epilepsy should be permitted to drive under certain conditions. One hundred and four(30.9%)participants suggested that people with epilepsy be permitted to drive a light vehicle. One hundred and forty-one(42.0%)suggest to withdraw the driving license for lifetime if a driver had an epileptic seizure attack;while twenty-three(6.8%)participants recommended suspension of driver license for 12 months. Conclusion:Efforts should be made to improve awareness and education among license applicants and instructors on the driving by people with epilepsy.Dabilgou Alfred Anselme Drave Alassane Kyelem Julie Marie Adeline Eklou Lorrainda Emerance Napon Christian Millogo Athanase Karfo Kapouni Kabore Jean 2022Acta Epileptologica2022,5,1:0

11Concurrent PIEZO1 activation and ATP2B4 blockade effectively reduce the risk of cerebral malaria and inhibit in vitro Plasmodium falciparum multiplication in red blood cells显示文摘Malaria caused by the Plasmodium falciparum parasite is responsible for more than 240 million cases per year and killed 627,000 people in 2020,mostly African children. The malaria parasite is transmitted by mosquitos belonging to the genus Anopheles. After an asymptomatic liver stage, the parasite is released into the bloodstream to invade red blood cells(RBCs)and replicate asexually. This erythrocytic phase is associated with a variety of clinical manifestations, including mild and severe malaria.Cerebral malaria(CM)is one of the most severe forms, characterized by the sequestration of parasitized RBCs in the small capillaries of the brain and the local development of cytokine-mediated inflammation.Genetic variants in genes encoding proteins involved in red blood cell physiology are protective factors against severe malaria,as clearly demonstrated for the sickle cell variant of hemoglobin(HbS).Mathieu Adjemout Bruno Pouvelle Fatou Thiam Alassane Thiam Magali Torres Samia Nisar Babacar Mbengue Alioune Dieye Pascal Rihet Sandrine Marquet 2023Genes & Diseases2023,10,6:0
