Influence of ellagic acid on prostate cancer cell proliferation:A caspase-dependent pathway显示文摘Objective:To evaluate the effect of allagic acid treatment on the cell viability of human prostate cancer cells. Methods:Ellagic acid(10-100 mol/L) treatment(48 h) of human prostate carcinoma PC3 cells was found to result in a dose-dependent inhibition of cell growth and apoptosis of PC3 cells as assessed by MTT assay, western blotting.flow cytometry and confocal microscopy. Results:We observed that ellagic acid treatment of PC3 cells resulted in a dose dependent inhibition of cell growth/cell viability. This ellagic acid caused cell growth inhibition was found to be accompanied by induction of apoptosis,as assessed by the cleavage of poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase(PARP) and morphological changes.Further, induction of apoptosis accompanied a decrease in the levels of antiapoptotic protein Bcl-2 and increase in proapoptotic protein Bax.thus shifting the Bax:Bcl-2 ratio in favor of apoptosis.Ellagic acid treatment of PC3 cells was also found to result in significant activation of caspases,as shown by the dose dependent decrease in the protein expression of procaspase-3,-6.-8 and -9.This ellagic acid-mediated induction of apoptosis was significantly(80%-90%) inhibited by the caspase inhibitor N-benzyloxycarbonyl-Val-Ala-Asp(OMe)-fluoromethylketone(Z-VAD-FMK).Thus these data suggested an essential role of caspases in ellagic acid-mediated apoptosis of PC3 cells. Conclusions:It is tempting to suggest that consumption of tropical pigmented fruits and vegetables could be an effective strategy to combat prostate cancer. | Arshi Malik Sarah Afaq Mohammad Shahid Kafil Akhtar Abdullah Assiri | 2011 | Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Medicine2011,4,7: | 18
Addition of simvastatin to carvedilol non responders: A new pharmacological therapy for treatment of portal hypertension显示文摘AIM To determine whether addition of simvastatin could be an important pharmacological rescue therapy for carvedilol non-responders. METHODS One hundred and two consecutive patients of cirrhosis of liver with significant portal hypertension were included. Hepatic venous pressure gradient(HVPG) was measured at the base line and after proper optimization of dose; chronic response was assessed at 3 mo. Carvedilol non-responders were given simvastatin 20 mg per day(increased to 40 mg per day at day 15). Carvedilol plus simvastatin was continued for 1 mo and hemodynamic response was again measured at 1 mo.RESULTS A total of 102 patients with mean age of 58.3 ± 6.6 years were included. Mean baseline HVPG was 16.75 ± 2.12 mmH g and after optimization of dose and reassessment of HVPG at 3 mo, mean reduction of HVPG from baseline was 5.5 ± 1.7 mm Hg and 2.8 ± 1.6 mm Hg among responders and non-responders respectively(P < 0.001). Addition of simvastatin to carvedilol non-responders resulted in significant response in 16 patients(42.1%) and thus overall response with carvedilol and carvedilol plus simvastatin was seen in 78 patients(80%). Two patients were removed in chronic protocol study with carvedilol and three patients were removed in carvedilol plus simvastatin study due to side effects.CONCLUSION Addition of simvastatin to carvedilol non-responders may prove to be an excellent rescue therapy in patients with portal hypertension. | Zeeshan Ahmad Wani Sonmoon Mohapatra Afaq Ahmad Khan Ashutosh Mohapatra Ghulam Nabi Yatoo | 2017 | World Journal of Hepatology2017,9,5: | 8
Antimicrobial activity of Cannabis sativa,Thuja orientalis and Psidium guajava leaf extracts against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus显示文摘Objective: This study examined the antimicrobial activity of Cannabis sativa, Thuja orientalis and Psidium guajava against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus(MRSA) and used a standardized purification protocol to determine the presence and abundance of bioactive compounds in the leaf extracts. Methods: In vitro antimicrobial activities of the ethanolic extracts of C. sativa, T. orientalis and P. guajava were tested against MRSA. The presence of bioactive molecules in these three leaves was evaluated using biochemical assays and high-performance thin-layer chromatography(HPTLC).Results: Resistance to methicillin, penicillin, oxacillin and cefoxitin was observed in each of the clinical and nonclinical MRSA isolates. However, they were still vulnerable to vancomycin. Used individually, the 50% extract of each plant leaf inhibited MRSA growth. A profound synergism was observed when C. sativa was used in combination with T. orientalis(1:1) and when P. guajava was used in combination with T. orientalis(1:1). This was shown by larger zones of inhibition. This synergism was probably due to the combined inhibitory effect of phenolics present in the leaf extracts(i.e., quercetin and gallic acid)and catechin, as detected by HPTLC.Conclusion: The leaf extracts of C. sativa, T. orientalis and P. guajava had potential for the control of both hospital-and community-acquired MRSA. Moreover, the inhibitory effect was enhanced when extracts were used in combination. | Shohini Chakraborty Nashra Afaq Neelam Singh Sukanta Majumdar | 2018 | Journal of Integrative Medicine2018,16,5: | 7
Performance evaluation of hybrid constructed wetlands for the treatment of municipal wastewater in developing countries显示文摘In developing countries, high cost of conventional wastewater treatment is a major hindrance in its application.Constructed wetlands(CWs)offer low-cost and effective solution to this issue. The current study aimed to evaluate an innovative maneuver of CWs i.e.hybrid flow constructed wetlands(HCWs)for municipal wastewater(MWW).The HCWs included two lab scale CWs;one horizontal and one vertical,in series.Local plant species were used.HCWs were operated in both, batch and continuous mode.Batch mode was used to(1)optimize detention time and(2)find pollutants removal efficiency.Continuous operation(at batch optimized retention time)was carried out for the evaluation of mass removal rate,r(g·m-2·d-1),volumetric rate constant,Kv(per day)and areal rate constant,Ka(m·d-1).Among two local plants tested,Pistia stratiotes gave better removal efficiency than Typha.Optimum detention time in HCWs was found to be 8 days(4+4 each). The optimum COD,BOD,TSS,TKN and P removal observed for Pistia stratiotes planted HCWs was 80%,84%,82%,71%and88%respectively.Effluent standards for COD,BOD and TSS were met at optimum conditions. The values of Kaand Kv demonstrated that more removal occurred in vertical flow as compared to horizontal flow CW. | Sajjad Haydar Mehwish Anis Misbah Afaq | 2020 | Chinese Journal of Chemical Engineering2020,28,6: | 4
Recent advances and emerging trends of rare-earth-ion doped spectral conversion nanomaterials in perovskite solar cells显示文摘Organic-inorganic lead halide based perovskite solar cells(PSCs)have attracted unprecedented research interest over last decade. The high performance, combined with merits of low fabrication costs and ease of synthesis make PSCs promising alternate to state of the art silicon(Si)based solar cells.Howeve r,some inherent shortcomings of PSCs are hindering their market dominance over conventional photovoltaic technologies such as transmission loss of sub-bandgap photons, poor stability and hysteresis effects.Recently, use of rare earth(RE)ions doped nanomaterials in PSCs,has been identified as an effective means to address the aforementioned issues by expanding the range of absorption spectra minimizing the non-absorption loss of solar photons, enhancing light scattering and improving operational stability. This article reviews the recent progress in doping rare-earth(RE)ions in the building blocks of PSCs such as semiconductor electrodes and photoactive perovskite layers, and its use as a separate spectral conversion layer in PSCs.The effect of size, shape, constitution and concentration of RE-nanoparticles on the overall performance and device stability will be analyzed in detail. Moreover,we provide an outlook on the opportunities this newly developed field offers and the critical challenges faced in rationally and effectively using RE-ion-doped nanomaterials in PSCs for better operational stability and enhanced performance. | Syed Afaq Ali Shah Muhammad Hassan Sayyad Jinghua Sun Zhongyi Guo | 2022 | Journal of Rare Earths2022,40,11: | 4

Transmit Power Optimization for Relay-Aided Multi-Carrier D2D Communication显示文摘In this paper,we consider the power optimization problem in Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing(OFDM)-based relay-enhanced device-to-device(D2D) communication. In a single cell transmission scenario, dualhop communication is assumed in which each D2D user re-uses the spectrum of just one Cellular User(CU).In this work,we formulate a joint optimization scheme under a Decode-and-Forward(DF) relaying protocol to maximize the sum throughput of D2D and cellular networks via power allocation over different sub-carriers.The problem is thus transformed into a standard convex optimization, subject to individual power constraints at different transmitting nodes. We exploit the duality theory to decompose the problem into several sub-problems and use Karush–Kuhn–Tucker(KKT) conditions to solve each sub-problem.We provide simulation results to validate the performance of our proposed scheme. | Muhammad Waqas Guftaar Ahmad Sardar Sidhu Tayyaba Jabeen Muhammad Afaq Ahmad Muhammad Awais Javed | 2018 | Tsinghua Science and Technology2018,23,1: | 2
