| 1 | pH-dependent leaching behaviour and other performance properties of cement-treated mixed contaminated soil显示文摘Portland cement has been widely used for stabilisation/solidification(S/S) treatment of contaminated soils.However,there is a dearth of literature on pH-dependent leaching of contaminants from cement-treated soils.This study investigates the leachability of Cu,Pb,Ni,Zn and total petroleum hydrocarbons(TPH) from a mixed contaminated soil.A sandy soil was spiked with 3000 mg/kg each of Cd,Cu,Pb,Ni and Zn,and 10,000 mg/kg of diesel,and treated with ordinary Portland cement(CEM I).Four different binder dosages,5%,10%,15% and 20%(m/m) and different water contents ranging from 13%-19% dry weight were used in order to find a safe operating envelope for the treatment process.The pH-dependent leaching behaviour of the treated soil was monitored over an 84-day period using a 3-point acid neutralisation capacity(ANC) test.The monolithic leaching test was also conducted.Geotechnical properties such as unconfined compressive strength(UCS),hydraulic conductivity and porosity were assessed over time.The treated soils recorded lower leachate concentrations of Ni and Zn compared to the untreated soil at the same pH depending on binder dosage.The binder had problems with Pb stabilisation and TPH leachability was independent of pH and binder dosage.The hydraulic conductivity of the mixes was generally of the order,10-8 m/sec,while the porosity ranged from 26%-44%.The results of selected performance properties are compared with regulatory limits and the range of operating variables that lead to acceptable performance described. | Reginald B. | 2 | Cell signaling mechanisms and metabolic regulation of germination and dormancy in barley seeds显示文摘During germination of barley(Hordeum vulgare L.) seeds, important morphological and physiological changes take place, including development of organs and tissues and activation of metabolic pathways. Germination and dormancy of seeds are regulated by abscisic acid, gibberellins, reactive oxygen species(ROS), reactive nitrogen species(RNS)and several other factors. Activities of ascorbate-glutathione cycle enzymes, responsible for scavenging ROS, strongly increase. Catalase and superoxide dismutase activities, also scavenging ROS, decrease at the onset of seed germination and then increase. With the increase in aerobic metabolism after radicle protrusion, the activities of the fermentation enzymes lactate and alcohol dehydrogenase decline rapidly. The RNS-scavenging activity of S-nitrosoglutathione reductase decreases in the course of seed germination, in concert with elevation of nitric oxide production and protein nitrosylation. This activity supports the role of RNS in regulating seed germination. Transcription of various genes at different phases of seed germination exhibits phase-specific changes. During imbibition, genes involved in cell wall metabolism are highly expressed; in the middle phase of seed germination before radicle protrusion, genes involved in amino acid synthesis, protein synthesis, and transport and nucleic acid synthesis are upregulated significantly, and after radicle protrusion, genes involved in photosynthetic metabolism are induced. | 3 | Epalrestat improves motor symptoms by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation in the reserpine induced mouse model of Parkinson’s disease显示文摘Background:Parkinson's disease(PD)is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder affecting a large number of elderly people worldwide.The current therapies for PD are symptom-based;they do not provide a cure but improve the quality of life.Muscular dysfunction is the hallmark clinical feature of PD and oxidative stress and inflammation play a critical role in its pathogenesis.Epalrestat is used for the treatment of diabetic neuropathy and is known to improve antioxidative defense mechanisms in the CNS.Therefore,in this study,we investigated the role of Epalrestat in the reserpine induced mouse model of PD.Method:We used Swiss Albino mice for the PD model and tested for akinesia/bradykinesia,muscular rigidity,palpebral ptosis,and tremor,as well as conducting swim and open field tests.Brain samples were used to determine oxidative stress parameters and infiltration of immune cells.Results:Epalrestat treatment significantly improved akinesia and bradykinesia,muscular dysfunctions,tremor level,and gait functions compared to the reserpine group.It also improved the latency in the swim test.Eplarestat significantly reduced lipid peroxidation and NO concentration in different brain tissues and increased the activity of antioxidative enzymes,glutathione,catalase,and superoxide dismutase.Furthermore,Epalrestat reduced neuroinflammation by reducing the number of infiltrating immune cells.Conclusion:Eplarestat improves muscular dysfunction in PD by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation. | Md.Mahbubur Rahman Rupali Rani Chakraborti Md.Abdullah Potol Ariful Haque Abir Ozayra Sharmin Mahabub Alam Md.Fazlur Rahman Khan Rownock Afrin Humayra Jannat Rasiqh Wadud Zaki Farhad Habib | 2020 | Animal Models and Experimental Medicine2020,3,1: | 3 |
