1Understanding plant drought resistance in a Mediterranean coastal sand dune ecosystem:differences between native and exotic invasive species显示文摘Aims Mediterranean coastal dunes are habitats of great conservation interest,with a distinctive and rich flora.In the last century,Acacia spp.,native from Australia,have been introduced in Portugal,with the objective of stabilizing sand dunes,and since have become dominant in numerous sand dune habitats.This invasion process led to the reduction of native plant species richness,changed soil characteristics and modified habitat’s microclimatic char-acteristics.The aim of this research was to typify and compare,in Mediterranean sand dune ecosystems,the ecophysiological responses to drought of Helichrysum italicum and Corema album,two native species,and Acacia longifolia,an exotic invasive spe-cies.We addressed the following specific objectives:(i)to com-pare water relations and water use efficiencies,(ii)to evaluate water stress,(iii)to assess water use strategies and water sources used by plants and(iv)to evaluate the morphological adaptations at leaf and phyllode level.Methods In order to obtain an integrative view of ecophysiological patterns,water relations and performance measuring methods have been applied:predawn(ψPD)and midday(ψMD)water potential,chloro-phyll a fluorescence,oxygen isotopic composition of xylem,rain and groundwater(δ18O)and leaf carbon isotopic discrimination(Δ13C).The leaf characteristics of the three species,as well as the histochemistry of non-glandular trichome cell walls,were also studied to identify morpho-traits related to drought resistance.Important Findings The results support our initial hypothesis:although A.longifolia clearly possesses a degree of resistance to water stress,such ability is provided by a different water strategy,when compared to native species.Natives relied on morphological adaptations to restrict water loss,whereas the invasive species adjusted the water uptake as a way to balance their limited ability of restricting water loss.We corroborate that woody native species(i)have a conservative water-saving strategy and minor seasonal variations relative to invasive species,(ii)use enriched water sources during drought periods,indicating different water sources and root systems com-paring with invasive species and(iii)present drought leaf morpho-functional adaptations related with limiting water loss.Comparing the physiological performance of invasive and native species can offer causal explanations for the relative success of alien plant invasions on sand dunes ecosystems.Cristina Antunes Ana Júlia Pereira Patrícia Fernandes Margarida Ramos Lia Ascensão Otília Correia Cristina Máguas 2018Journal of Plant Ecology2018,11,1:4
2Clinical-pathological and molecular characterization of long-term survivors with advanced non-small cell lung cancer显示文摘Objective:Long-term survivors(LS)of non-small cell lung cancer(NSCLC)without driver alterations,displaying an overall survival(OS)of more than 3 years,comprise around 10%of cases in several series treated with chemotherapy.There are classical prognosis factors for these cases[stage,Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group(ECOG),etc.],but more data are required in the literature.In this multi-center study,we focused on LS of advanced NSCLC with OS above 36 months to perform a clinical-pathological and molecular characterization.Methods:In the first step,we conducted a clinical-pathological characterization of the patients.Afterwards,we carried out a genetic analysis by comparing LS to a sample of short-term survivors(SS)(with an OS less than 9 months).We initially used whole-genome RNA-seq to identify differentiating profiles of LS and SS,and later confirmed these with reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction(RT-PCR)for the rest of the samples.Results:A total of 94 patients were included,who were mainly men,former smokers,having adenocarcinoma(AC)-type NSCLC with an ECOG of 0-1.We obtained an initial differential transcriptome expression,displaying 5 over-and 33 under-expressed genes involved in different pathways:namely,the secretin receptor,surfactant protein,trefoil factor 1(T FF1),serpin,Ca-channels,and Tolllike receptor(TLRs)families.Finally,RT-PCR analysis of 40(20 LS/20 SS)samples confirmed that four genes(surfactant proteins and SFTP)were significantly down-regulated in SS compared to LS by using an analysis of covariance(ANCOVA)model:SFTPA1(P=0.023),SFTPA2(P=0.027),SFTPB{P=0.02),and SFT PC(P=0.047).Conclusions:We present a sequential genetic analysis of a sample of NSCLCLS with no driver alterations,obtaining a differential RNA-seq/RT-PCR profile showing an abnormal expression of SF genes.Juan Moreno-Rubio Santiago Ponce Rosa Alvarez Maria Eugenia Olmedo Sandra Falagan Xabier Mielgo Fatima Navarro Patricia Cruz Luis Cabezon-Gutierrez Carlos Aguado Gonzalo Colmenarejo Marta Munoz-Fernandez de Leglaria Ana Belen Enguita Maria Cebollero Amparo Benito Isabel Alemany Carolina del Castillo Ricardo Ramos Ana Ramirez de Molina Enrique Casado Maria Sereno 2020Cancer Biology & Medicine2020,17,2:4
3Comparative study of the efficacy and safety of bromfenac, nepafenac and diclofenac sodium for the prevention of cystoid macular edema after phacoemulsification显示文摘● AIM: To compare the efficacy, tolerability and safety of bromfenac 0.09%, nepafenac 0.1% or diclofenac 0.1% for the prophylaxis of the cystoid macular edema(CME) after phacoemulsification.● METHODS: Group sequential observational comparative study. After phacoemulsification, patients received two months for topical treatment of either diclofenac sodium, bromfenac or nepafenac. All patients received concomitant topical tobramycin 0.3% and topical prednisolone 1%. We measured CME using optical coherence tomography(OCT) central foveal thickness, macular thickness and total macular volume.● RESULTS: We enrolled 243 patients from January to June 2015, and 35% received diclofenac, 32.9% bromfenac and 32.1% nepafenac. When we compared pre-operative to three weeks to two months, bromfenac was more effective in reducing foveal volume(21.3 and 35.4 mm3, respectively), compared with the diclofenac(1.3 and 11.5 mm3, respectively), and the nepafenac group, became more edematous 6.4 and 5.3, respectively. Totally 133 patients completed the post-surgical satisfaction questionnaire.
