Update on hepatitis B and C virus diagnosis显示文摘Viral hepatitis B and C virus(HBV and HCV) are responsible for the most of chronic liver disease worldwide and are transmitted by parenteral route, sexual and vertical transmission. One important measure to reduce the burden of these infections is the diagnosis of acute and chronic cases of HBV and HCV. In order to provide an effective diagnosis and monitoring of antiviral treatment, it is important to choose sensitive, rapid, inexpensive, and robust analytical methods. Primary diagnosis of HBV and HCV infection is made by using serological tests for detecting antigens and antibodies against these viruses. In order to confirm primary diagnosis, to quantify viral load, to determine genotypes and resistance mutants for antiviral treatment, qualitative and quantitative molecular tests are used. In this manuscript, we review the current serological and molecular methods for the diagnosis of hepatitis B and C. | Livia Melo Villar Helena Medina Cruz Jakeline Ribeiro Barbosa Cristianne Sousa Bezerra Moyra Machado Portilho Letícia de Paula Scalioni | 2015 | World Journal of Virology2015,4,4: | 9
Slope Processes, Mass Movement and Soil Erosion: A Review显示文摘Soil erosion and land degradation are global problems and pose major issues in many countries. Both soil erosion and mass movement are two forms of land degradation and humans play important roles in these geomorphological processes. This paper reviews slope processes associated with mass movement and soil erosion and contributory factors, including physical and human agents.Acting together, these cause diverse geomorphological features.Slope processes are illustrated by reference to case studies from Brazil and UK.The causes and impacts of erosion are discussed, along with appropriate remedial bioengineering methods and the potential of the measures to prevent these types of environmental degradation.Although there are several agents of erosion, water is the most important one.Cultivation can promote soil erosion, due to ploughing and harvesting, which moves soil down slopes.Soil erosion and mass movement data would inform the viability of soil conservation practices.Integrated management of drainage basins offers a promising way forward for effective soil conservation and soil remedial bioengineering in Brazil and UK. | Antonio Jos Teixeira GUERRA Michael Augustine FULLEN Maria do Carmo Oliveira JORGE Joss Fernando Rodrigues BEZERRA Mohamed S. | 3 | Automatic Detection of COVID-19 Infection Using Chest X-Ray Images Through Transfer Learning显示文摘The new coronavirus(COVID-19),declared by the World Health Organization as a pandemic, has infected more than 1 million people and killed more than 50 thousand. An infection caused by COVID-19 can develop into pneumonia, which can be detected by a chest X-ray exam and should be treated appropriately. In this work,we propose an automatic detection method for COVID-19 infection based on chest X-ray images. The datasets constructed for this study are composed of194 X-ray images of patients diagnosed with coronavirus and 194 X-ray images of healthy patients.Since few images of patients with COVID-19 are publicly available,we apply the concept of transfer learning for this task.We use different architectures of convolutional neural networks(CNNs)trained on Image Net,and adapt them to behave as feature extractors for the X-ray images. Then, the CNNs are combined with consolidated machine learning methods, such as k-Nearest Neighbor,Bayes,Random Forest, multilayer perceptron(MLP),and support vector machine(SVM).The results show that, for one of the datasets, the extractor-classifier pair with the best performance is the Mobile Net architecture with the SVM classifier using a linear kernel, which achieves an accuracy and an F1-score of 98.5%.For the other dataset, the best pair is Dense Net201 with MLP,achieving an accuracy and an F1-score of 95.6%.Thus,the proposed approach demonstrates efficiency in detecting COVID-19 in X-ray images. | Elene Firmeza Ohata Gabriel Maia Bezerra João Victor Souza das Chagas Aloísio Vieira Lira Neto Adriano Bessa Albuquerque Victor Hugo Cde Albuquerque Pedro Pedrosa Rebouças Filho | 2021 | IEEE/CAA Journal of Automatica Sinica2021,8,1: | 3
Mangiferin,a natural xanthone, accelerates gastrointestinal transit in mice involving cholinergic mechanism显示文摘AIM:To investigate the effects of mangiferin on gastrointestinal transit(GIT) in normal and constipated mice, together with the possible mechanism.METHODS:Intragastrically-administered charcoal mealwas used to measure GIT in overnight starved Swiss mice.In the first experiments,mangiferin(3 mg/kg,10 mg/kg,30 mg/kg,and 100 mg/kg,po) or tegaserod(1 mg/kg,ip) were administered 30 min before the charcoal meal to study their effects on normal transit. In the second series,mangiferin(30 mg/kg) was tested on delayed GIT induced by several different pharmacological agonists(morphine, clonidine, capsaicin) or antagonists(ondansetron, verapamil, and atropine) whereas in the third series,mangiferin(30 mg/kg,100 mg/kg and 300 mg/kg) or tegaserod(1 mg/kg) were tested on 6 h fecal pellets outputted by freely fed mice. The ratio of wet to dry weight was calculated and used as a marker of fecal water content.RESULTS:Mangiferin administered orally significantly(P < 0.05) accelerated GIT at 30 mg/kg and 100 mg/kg(89% and 93%,respectively),similarly to 5-hydroxytryptamine4(5-HT4) agonist tegaserod(81%) when compared to vehicle-treated control(63%).Co-administered mangiferin(30 mg/kg) totally reversed the inhibitory effect of opioid agonist morphine,5-HT3-receptor antagonist ondansetron and transient receptor potential vanilloid-1 receptor agonist capsaicin on GIT,but only to a partial extent with the GIT-delay induced by 2-adrenoceptor agonist clonidine, and calcium antagonist verapamil.However,co-administered atropine completely blocked the stimulant effect of mangiferin on GIT,suggesting the involvement of muscarinic acetylcholine receptor activation.Although mangiferin significantly enhanced the 6 h fecal output at higher doses(245.5 ± 10.43 mg vs 161.9 ± 10.82 mg and 227.1 ± 20.11 mg vs 161.9 ± 10.82 mg of vehicle-treated control,at 30 and 100 mg/kg,P < 0.05,respectively),the effect of tegaserod was more potent(297.4 ± 7.42 mg vs 161.9 ± 10.82 mg of vehicle-treated control,P < 0.05).Unlike tegaserod, which showed an enhanced water content in fecal pellets(59.20% ± 1.09% vs 51.44% ± 1.19% of control,P < 0.05),mangiferin evidenced no such effect,indi-cating that it has only a motor and not a secretomotor effect.CONCLUSION:Our data indicate the prokinetic action of mangiferin. It can stimulate the normal GIT and also overcome the drug-induced transit delay, via a cholinergic physiological mechanism. | Talita Cavalcante Morais Synara Cavalcante Lopes Karine Maria Martins Bezerra Carvalho Bruno Rodrigues Arruda Francisco Thiago Correia de Souza Maria Teresa Salles Trevisan Vietla Satyanarayana Rao Flávia Almeida Santos | 2012 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2012,18,25: | 3
Antifungal activity and antidiarrheal activity via antimotility mechanisms of (-)-fenchone in experimental models显示文摘BACKGROUND(-)-Fenchone is a bicyclic monoterpene present in essential oils of plant species, such as Foeniculum vulgare and Peumus boldus, used to treatment of gastrointestinal diseases.Pharmacological studies report its anti-inflammatory,antioxidant,and antinociceptive activity.AIM To investigate antidiarrheal activity related to gastrointestinal motility, intestinal secretion and antimicrobial activity.METHODS A castor oil-induced diarrhea model was used to evaluate antidiarrheal activity.Intestinal transit and gastric emptying protocols were used to assess a possible antimotility effect.Muscarinic receptors, presynaptic α2-adrenergic and tissue adrenergic receptors,KATP channels, nitric oxide were investigated to uncover antimotility mechanisms of action and castor oil-induced enteropooling to elucidate antisecretory mechanisms. The antimicrobial activity was evaluated in the minimum inhibitory concentration model, the fractional inhibitory concentration index using the(-)-fenchone association method with standard antifungal agents.RESULTS(-)-Fenchone(75,150 and 300 mg/kg)showed antidiarrheal activity, with a significant decrease in the evacuation index. This activity is possibly related to a percentage of reduced intestinal transit(75,150 and 300 mg/kg).The antimotility effect of(-)-fenchone decreased in the presence of pilocarpine,yohimbine,propranolol,L-NG-nitroarginine methyl ester or glibenclamide. In the enteropooling model,no reduction in intestinal fluid weight was observed.(-)-Fenchone did not show antibacterial activity;on the other hand, inhibits the growth of strains of fungi with a minimum fungicide concentration of 32μg/mL.However,when it was associated with amphotericin B,no synergism was observed.CONCLUSION The antidiarrheal effect of(-)-fenchone in this study involves antimotility effect and not involve antisecretory mechanisms.(-)-Fenchone presents antifungal activity;however,it did not show antibacterial activity. | Michelle Liz de Souza Pessoa Leiliane Macena Oliveira Silva Maria Elaine Cristina Araruna Catarina Alves de Lima Serafim Edvaldo Balbino Alves Junior Alessa Oliveira Silva Matheus Marley Bezerra Pessoa Hermes Diniz Neto Edeltrudes de Oliveira Lima Leonia Maria Batista | 2020 | World Journal of Gastroenterology2020,26,43: | 2
Interleukin-6-174G/C polymorphism is associated with a decreased risk of type 2 diabetes in patients with chronic hepatitis C virus显示文摘BACKGROUND Chronic hepatitis C(CHC)is associated with type 2 diabetes mellitus.Although the pathogenesis remains to be elucidated,a growing evidence has suggested a role of pro-inflammatory immune response.Increased serum concentrations of Interleukin 6(IL-6)have been associated with insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes mellitus as well as advanced forms of liver disease in chronic hepatitis C infection.AIM To investigate the frequency of IL-6-174G/C(rs1800795)single nucleotide polymorphism(SNP)in CHC patients and in healthy subjects of the same ethnicity.Associations between type 2 diabetes mellitus(dependent variable)and demographic, clinical, nutritional, virological and,IL-6 genotyping data were also investigated in CHC patients.METHODS Two hundred and forty-five patients with CHC and 179 healthy control subjects(blood donors)were prospectively included.Type 2 diabetes mellitus was diagnosed according to the criteria of the American Diabetes Association.Clinical, biochemical, histological and radiological methods were used for the diagnosis of the liver disease.IL-6 polymorphism was evaluated by Taqman SNP genotyping assay. The data were analysed by logistic regression models.RESULTS Type 2 diabetes mellitus, blood hypertension and liver cirrhosis were observed in 20.8%(51/245),40.0%(98/245)and 38.4%(94/245)of the patients, respectively. The frequency of the studied IL-6 SNP did not differ between the CHC patients and controls(P=0.81)and all alleles were in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium(P=0.38).In the multivariate analysis, type 2 diabetes mellitus was inversely associated with GC and CC genotypes of IL-6-174(OR=0.42;95%CI=0.22-0.78;P=0.006)and positively associated with blood hypertension(OR=5.56;95%CI=2.79-11.09;P<0.001).CONCLUSION This study was the first to show that GC and CC genotypes of IL-6-174 SNP are associated with a decreased risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus in patients chronically infected with hepatitis C virus. The identification of potential inflammatory mediators involved in the crosstalk between hepatitis C virus and the axis pancreas-liver remains important issues that deserve further investigations. | Cliviany Borges da Silva Diego Alves Vieira Luisa Freitas de Melo Anna Luiza Soares Chagas Adriana Dias Gomes César Lúcio Lopes de Faria Jr Rosangela Teixeira Dulciene Maria de Magalh?es Queiroz Gifone Aguiar Rocha Maria Marta Sarquis Soares Juliana Maria Trindade Bezerra Luciana Diniz Silva | 2020 | World Journal of Hepatology2020,12,4: | 2
