7When nets meet environmental DNA metabarcoding:integrative approach to unveil invertebrate community patterns of hypersaline lakes显示文摘Saline and hypersaline wetlands account for almost half of the volume of inland water globally.They provide pivotal habitat for a vast range of species,including crucial ecosystem services for humans such as carbon sink storage and extractive resource reservoirs.Despite their importance,effective ecological assessment is in its infancy compared to current conventional surveys carried out in freshwater ecosystems.The integration of environmental DNA(eDNA)analysis and traditional techniques has the potential to transform biomonitoring processes,particularly in remote and understudied saline environments.In this context,this preliminary study aims to explore the potential of eDNA coupled with conventional approaches by targeting five hypersaline lakes at Rottnest Island(Wadjemup)in Western Australia.We focused on the invertebrate community,a widely accepted key ecological indicator to assess the conservational status in rivers and lakes.The combination of metabarcoding with morphology-based taxonomic analysis described 16 taxa belonging to the orders Anostraca,Diptera,Isopoda,and Coleoptera.DNA-based diversity assessment revealed more taxa at higher taxonomic resolution than the morphology-based taxonomic analysis.However,certain taxa(i.e.,Ephydridae,Stratyiomidae,Ceratopogonidae)were only identified via net surveying.Overall,our results indicate that great potential resides in combining conventional net-based surveys with novel eDNA approaches in saline and hypersaline lakes.Indeed,urgent and effective conservational frameworks are required to contrast the enormous pressure that these ecosystems are increasingly facing.Further investigations at larger spatial temporal scales will allow consolidation of robust,reliable,and affordable biomonitoring frameworks in the underexplored world of saline wetlands.Matthew A.CAMPBELL Alex LAINI Nicole E.WHITE Morten E.ALLENTOFT Mattia SACCÒ 2023Journal of Oceanology and Limnology2023,41,4:0
8Modeling the influence of livestock grazing pressure on grassland bird distributions显示文摘Background:The influence of vegetative changes due to livestock grazing on grassland birds is well-recognized because these birds are heavily influenced by vegetative structure.Traditionally,species distribution models(SDMs)use direct variables,resources that the animal consumes or requires to persist in an area(e.g.,water)to define and project a species’niche and distribution.Indirect variables,which are features the animal does not consume or require for persistence but with which it may still interact,are often excluded.Our objective was to improve the traditional SDMs projecting the distribution of three summer resident South Texas grassland birds(Northern Bobwhite Colinus virginianus,Eastern Meadowlark Sturnella magna,and Cassin’s Sparrow Peucaea cassinii)by incorporating livestock grazing pressure,an indirect variable,into five SDM algorithms:BioClim,generalized linear model,MaxEnt,boosted regression tree,and random forest.We collected data from the Coloraditas Grazing Research and Demonstration Area(CGRDA),a 7684-ha area located on the San Antonio Viejo Ranch(SAV)in South Texas.We used several relevant environmental characteristics to build SDMs and compared model performance(AUC and TSS)with and without grazing pressure as an indirect variable.Results:Machine learning models(MaxEnt and random forest)had the highest predictive performance for all species,with random forest being the most consistent for each analysis.BioClim and generalized linear model remained constant or only marginally improved with the addition of the grazing pressure.Conclusions:Our findings suggest that model selection for SDM should include consideration of species prevalence,and machine-learning algorithms should be preferred when the target species is of low or unknown prevalence.Further,livestock grazing has measurable influence on grassland bird species’distributions and should be included in SDMs as an indirect variable in addition to associated vegetative changes.Rachel R.Fern Michael L.Morrison William E.Grant Hsiaohsuan Wang Tyler A.Campbell 2020Ecological Processes2020,9,1:0

10Light history modulates growth and photosynthetic responses of a diatom to ocean acidification and UV radiation显示文摘To examine the synergetic effects of ocean acidification(OA)and light intensity on the photosynthetic performance of marine diatoms,the marine centric diatom Thalassiosira weissflogii was cultured under ambient low CO_(2)(LC,390μatm)and elevated high CO_(2)(HC,1000μatm)levels under low-light(LL,60μmol m^(-2)s^(-1))or high-light(HL,220μmol m^(-2)s^(-1))conditions for over 20 generations.HL stimulated the growth rate by 128 and 99%but decreased cell size by 9 and 7%under LC and HC conditions,respectively.However,HC did not change the growth rate under LL but decreased it by 9%under HL.LL combined with HC decreased both maximum quantum yield(FV/FM)and effective quantum yield(ΦPSII),measured under either low or high actinic light.When exposed to UV radiation(UVR),LL-grown cells were more prone to UVA exposure,with higher UVA and UVR inducing inhibition ofΦPSII compared with HL-grown cells.Light use efficiency(α)and maximum relative electron transport rate(rETRmax)were inhibited more in the HC-grown cells when UVR(UVA and UVB)was present,particularly under LL.Our results indicate that the growth light history influences the cell growth and photosynthetic responses to OA and UVR.Wei Li Tifeng Wang Douglas A.Campbell Kunshan Gao 2023Marine Life Science & Technology2023,5,1:0
