Review of low timing jitter mode-locked fiber lasers and applications in dual-comb absolute distance measurement显示文摘Passively mode-locked fiber lasers emit femtosecond pulse trains with excellent short-term stability. The quantum-limited timing jitter of a free running femtosecond erbium-doped fiber laser working at room temperature is considerably below one femtosecond at high Fourier frequency. The ultrashort pulse train with ultralow timing jitter enables absolute time-of-flight measurements based on a dual-comb implementation, which is typically composed of a pair of optical frequency combs generated by femtosecond lasers. Dead-zone-free absolute distance measurement with sub-micrometer precision and kHz update rate has been routinely achieved with a dual-comb configuration, which is promising for a number of precision manufacturing applications, from large step-structure measurements prevalent in microelectronic profilometry to three coordinate measurements in large-scale aerospace manufacturing and shipbuilding. In this paper, we first review the sub-femtosecond precision timing jitter characterization methods and approaches for ultralow timing jitter mode-locked fiber laser design. Then, we provide an overview of the state-of-the-art dual-comb absolute ranging technology in terms of working principles, experimental implementations, and measurement precisions. Finally, we discuss the impact of quantum-limited timing jitter on the dual-comb ranging precision at a high update rate. The route to highprecision dual-comb range finder design based on ultralow jitter femtosecond fiber lasers is proposed.Haosen Shi Youjian Song Runmin Li Yuepeng Li Hui Cao Haochen Tian Bowen Liu Lu Chai Minglie Hu 2018Nanotechnology and Precision Engineering2018,1,4:9
Investigation on tool wear and tool life prediction in micro-milling of Ti-6Al-4V显示文摘Short tool life and rapid tool wear in micromachining of hard-to-machine materials remain a barrier to the process being economically viable. In this study, standard procedures and conditions set by the ISO for tool life testing in milling were used to analyze the wear of tungsten carbide micro-end-milling tools through slot milling conducted on titanium alloy Ti-6 Al-4 V. Tool wear was characterized by flank wear rate,cutting-edge radius change, and tool volumetric change. The effect of machining parameters, such as cutting speed and feedrate, on tool wear was investigated with reference to surface roughness and geometric accuracy of the finished workpiece. Experimental data indicate different modes of tool wear throughout machining, where nonuniform flank wear and abrasive wear are the dominant wear modes. High cutting speed and low feedrate can reduce the tool wear rate and improve the tool life during micromachining. However, the low feedrate enhances the plowing effect on the cutting zone, resulting in reduced surface quality and leading to burr formation and premature tool failure. This study concludes with a proposal of tool rejection criteria for micro-milling of Ti-6 Al-4 V.Amin Dadgari Dehong Huo David Swailes 2018Nanotechnology and Precision Engineering2018,1,4:5

Design of a hexagonal air-coupled capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducer for air parametric array显示文摘An air parametric array can generate a highly directional beam of audible sound in air, which has a wide range of applications in targeted audio delivery.Capacitive micromachined ultrasonic transducer(CMUTs)have great potential for air-coupled applications, mainly because of their low acoustic impedance. In this study,an air-coupled CMUT array is designed as an air parametric array.A hexagonal array is proposed to improve the directivity of the sound generated.A finite element model of the CMUT is established in COMSOL software to facilitate the choice of appropriate structural parameters of the CMUT cell. The CMUT array is then fabricated by a wafer bonding process with high consistency. The performances of the CMUT are tested to verify the accuracy of the finite element analysis.By optimizing the component parameters of the bias-T circuit used for driving the CMUT,DC and AC voltages can be effectively applied to the top and bottom electrodes of the CMUT to provide efficient ultrasound transmission. Finally, the prepared hexagonal array is successfully used to conduct preliminary experiments on its application as an air parametric array.Xiaoli Zhang Hui Zhang Dachao Li 2021Nanotechnology and Precision Engineering2021,4,1:4
Tribological Performance of Bioimplants: A Comprehensive Review显示文摘Total joint replacements(TJR) have been a huge success for orthopaedic surgery in the past century and are gaining increasing importance today due to the aging population. However, the short longevity of artificial joints is one of the major problems in bioimplant industry and needs to be rectified since an increasing number of young people, with more active lifestyles, must receive TJR. Wear mechanisms are discussed in this paper to describe the root causes of the failures and to give some general ideas to increase the lifespan of artificial joints. The suitable material combination is of great importance for the wear resistance of bioimplants, and bioceramics will exert a crucial effect in their future progress. Other materials, such as metal alloys and polymers, are also discussed in this paper. Surface finish is another factor affecting the tribological performance of bioimplants. In recent years, surface texture technology has fascinated many researchers, and a good design of texture pattern requires a comprehensive understanding of wear mechanisms, material properties, and dynamic fluid theory. This review also covers a summary of in vitro wear tests, including simulators, lubricant, and testing parameters.Gang Shen Fengzhou Fang Chengwei Kang 2018Nanotechnology and Precision Engineering2018,1,2:4
Theoretical fundamentals of short pulse laser–metal interaction: A review显示文摘Short and ultrashort pulse lasers offer excellent advantages in laser precision machining mainly because of their high pulse energy and low ablation threshold. The complex process of laser interaction with metals limits the indepth investigation into laser ablation. Numerical simulation is important in the study of fundamental mechanisms. This review explores the start-of-the-art methods for the theoretical simulation of the laser ablation of metals, including plasma formation and expansion. Laser-induced period surface structures are also studied.Xinxin Li Yingchun Guan 2020Nanotechnology and Precision Engineering2020,3,3:4
Anisotropic brittle-ductile transition of monocrystalline sapphire during orthogonal cutting and nanoindentation experiments显示文摘Single-crystal sapphire is utilized as a high-performance engineering material, especially in extreme and harsh environments. However, due to its extreme hardness and brittleness, the machinability of sapphire is still a challenge.By means of nanoindentation and plunge-cut experiments, the anisotropic brittle-ductile transition of the prismatic M-plane and rhombohedral R-plane is examined by analyzing crack morphologies and the critical depth-of-cut(CDC).The experimental results of the nanoindentation tests are correlated to the plunge-cut experiment. Both the prism plane and the rhombohedral crystal plane exhibit a two-fold symmetry of ductility with various crack patterns along the machined grooves. The direction-dependent plasticity of the hexagonal sapphire crystal is mainly connected to a twinning process accompanied by slip dislocation.Philipp Maas Yuta Mizumoto Yasuhiro Kakinuma Sangkee Min 2018Nanotechnology and Precision Engineering2018,1,3:3
Formation of subsurface cracks in silicon wafers by grinding显示文摘Single-crystal silicon is an important material in the semiconductor and optical industries. However, being hard and brittle,a silicon wafer is vulnerable to subsurface cracks(SSCs)during grinding, which is detrimental to the performance and lifetime of a wafer product. Therefore, studying the formation of SSCs is important for optimizing SSC-removal processes and thus improving surface integrity. In this study,a statistical method is used to study the formation of SSCs induced during grinding of silicon wafers. The statistical results show that grinding-induced SSCs are not stochastic but anisotropic in their distributions.Generally, when grinding with coarse abrasive grains,SSCs form along the cleavage planes, primarily the{111}planes.However,when grinding with finer abrasive grains,SSCs tend to form along planes with a fracture-surface energy higher than that of the cleavage planes. These findings provide a guidance for the accurate detection of SSCs in ground silicon wafers.Jingfei Yin Qian Bai Yinnan Li Bi Zhang 2018Nanotechnology and Precision Engineering2018,1,3:3

Cutting performance of micro-textured PCBN tool显示文摘To study the efect of micro-texture on the cutting performance of polyrystalline cubic boron nitide(PCBN)tools, five types of micro-textures(circular pits, eliptical grooves, transverse grooves, composite grooves, and wavy grooves)were applied to the rake surface of PCBN tools by an optical fber laser marking machine.Through a combination of three dimensional cutting simulations and experiments, the influences of micro-texture on chip-tool contact area, cutting force, chip morphology, shear angle, and surface roughness during the cuting process were analyzed. The results indicated that the chip--tool contact area and cutting force of both non-textured and micro textured tools increased with increasing cutting speed, while the shear angle decreased with increasing cutting speed. The chip-tool contact area and cutting force of the five types of micro-textured tools were smaller than those of the non textured tool The chip-tool contact area and cutting force obtained by the wavy-groove micro textured tool were the smallest. The chip radius produced by the five types of micro-textured tools was smaller than that produced by the non-textured tool, and the chip morphology was more stable. The transverse-groove micro-textured tool had a better chip breaking efect. The chip rnadius generated by the lliptical groove micro textured tool was 0.96 cm,while that generated by the wavy-groove tool varied from 0.55 cm to 1.26 cm.The presence of a micro-texture reduced the surface roughness of the workpiece by 11.73%-56.7%.Under the same cutting conditions, the five types of micro-textured tools gave a smaller chip--tool contact area, cutting force, chip radius, and surface roughness and a larger shear angle than the non-textured tool.In addition, the elliptical groove and wavy-groove micro-textured tools had better cuting performance.Lin Fan Zilong Deng Xingjun Gao Yan He 2021Nanotechnology and Precision Engineering2021,4,2:3

Smartphone-based cytometric biosensors for point-of-care cellular diagnostics显示文摘Analysis on a single-cell basis is both fundamental and meaningful in biomedical research and clinical practice.Flow cytometry is one of the most popular approaches in this field with broad applications in cell sorting, counting, and identification of rare cells. However, the complicated design and bulky size of conventional flow cytometry have restricted their applications mainly in centralized laboratories. With the recent development of smartphone devices,smartphone-based cytometry has been explored and tested for single-cell analysis.Compared with traditional cytometers,smartphone-based cytometric biosensors are more suitable for point-of-care(POC)uses,such as on-site disease diagnosis and personal health monitoring. In this review article, the history of traditional flowcytometry is introduced, and advances of smartphone-enabled cytometry are summarized in detail based on different working principles.Representative POC applications of smartphone cytometers are also discussed. The achievements demonstrated so far illustrate the potential of smartphone-based cytometric devices to transform single-cell measurement in general, with a significant impact in POC diagnostics, preventive medicine, and cell biology.Shengwei Zhang Zheng Li Qingshan Wei 2020Nanotechnology and Precision Engineering2020,3,1:2

Magnetorheological finishing of an irregular-shaped small-bore complex component using a small ball-end permanent-magnet polishing head显示文摘A novel magnetorheological finishing(MRF)process using a small ball-end permanent-magnet polishing head is proposed, and a four-axes linkage dedicated MRF machine tool is fabricated to achieve the nanofinishing of an irregularψ-shaped small-bore complex component with concave surfaces of a curvature radius less than3 mm.The processing method of the complex component is introduced.Magnetostatic simulation during the entire finishing path is carried out to analyze the material removal characteristics.A typicalψ-shaped small-bore complex component is polished on the developed device, and a fine surface quality is obtained with surface roughness Raof 0.0107μm and surface accuracy of the finished spherical surfaces of 0.3320μm(PV).These findings indicate that the proposed MRF process can perform the nanofinishing of a kind of small-bore complex component with small-curvature-radius concave surfaces.Henan Liu Jian Cheng Tingzhang Wang Mingjun Chen 2019Nanotechnology and Precision Engineering2019,2,3:2
Enhancement of surface wettability via micro-and nanostructures by single point diamond turning显示文摘Studies on surface wettability have received tremendous interest due to their potential applications in research and industrial processes. One of the strategies to tune surface wettability is modifying surface topography at micro-and nanoscales. In this research, periodic micro-and nanostructures were patterned on several polymer surfaces by ultra-precision single point diamond turning to investigate the relationships between surface topographies at the micro-and nanoscales and their surface wettability. This research revealed that single-point diamond turning could be used to enhance the wettability of a variety of polymers, including polyvinyl chloride(PVC), polyethylene 1000(PE1000), polypropylene copolymer(PP) and polytetrafluoroethylene(PFTE), which cannot be processed by conventional semiconductor-based manufacturing processes. Materials exhibiting common wettability properties(θ≈ 90°) changed to exhibit 'superhydrophobic' behavior(θ > 150°). Compared with the size of the structures, the aspect ratio of the void space between micro-and nanostructures has a strong impact on surface wettability.Nicolás Cabezudo Jining Sun Behnam Andi Fei Ding Ding Wang Wenlong Chang Xichun Luo Ben B.Xu 2019Nanotechnology and Precision Engineering2019,2,1:2
Theoretical and experimental characterizations of gigahertz acoustic streaming in microscale fluids显示文摘Even as gigahertz(GHz) acoustic streaming has developed into a multi-functional platform technology for biochemical applications, including ultrafast microfluidic mixing, microparticle operations, and cellar or vesicle surgery, its theoretical principles have yet to be established. This is because few studies have been conducted on the use of such high frequency acoustics in microscale fluids. Another difficulty is the lack of velocimetry methods for microscale and nanoscale fluidic streaming. In this work, we focus on the basic aspects of GHz acoustic streaming, including its micro-vortex generation principles, theoretical model, and experimental characterization technologies. We present details of a weak-coupled finite simulation that represents our current understanding of the GHz-acoustic-streaming phenomenon. Both our simulation and experimental results show that the GHzacoustic-induced interfacial body force plays a determinative role in vortex generation. We carefully studied changes in the formation of GHz acoustic streaming at different acoustic powers and flow rates. In particular,we developed a microfluidic-particle-image velocimetry method that enables the quantification of streaming at the microscale and even nanoscale. This work provides a full map of GHz acoustofluidics and highlights the way to further theoretical study of this topic.Weiwei Cui Wei Pang Yang Yang Tiechuan Li Xuexin Duan 2019Nanotechnology and Precision Engineering2019,2,1:2
